A pit bull attacked and killed his pregnant owner in a Pacifica, Calif., home.

Darla Napora, 32, was attacked by her unneutered, 2-year-old male pit bull Thursday. Her husband, Greg Napora, found her bloody body in the couple’s living room with the pit bull, named Gunner, hovering over her.

“When we arrived, what we found was the victim lying in her front room. She was non-responsive, not breathing and suffering major trauma to her upper body,” said Pacifica Police Capt. David Bertini.

Greg Napora told police that he had corralled the dog in a back room. The back room led into the backyard and the brindled pit bull managed to escape into the backyard.

The dog began to approach the police and first responders.

Pit Bull That Killed Pregnant Mom Shot By Cops

“He was just covered in blood,” Bertini said. “There were also bystanders in the area. We were going to take no chances with that dog.”

Police shot and killed the dog.

An autopsy is underway to determine how exactly Darla Napora died.

“We can’t say whether she bled to death or she may have had a heart attack, we don’t know,” said Bertini.

A necropsy is being performed on the dog to determine if there’s anything physically or medically wrong with the animal that would have caused the attack.

Another pit bull was present at the couple’s home. Police said it didn’t appear that the younger female pitbull was involved in the attack.

As a precaution, animal control took the dog. It’s unclear at this time if that pitbull will be returned to the Napora family.

When reached by phone, Darla Napora’s family was too overcome by grief to speak.

Police would not comment on how far along Darla Napora was in her pregnancy. The Oakland Tribune reported that she was nearly six months along.

Neighbors told ABC News affiliate KGO that the dogs appeared normal. The Napora’s had a “Beware of the Dog” sign on their home.

Police said that they had received no complaints about the dogs in the past.

A family photo shows Emako Mendoza, 75, who was mauled at her Paradise Hills home by her neighbor's two pit bulls, authorities said.

June 19, 2011 at 10:19 p.m.

A 75-year-old woman who had to have her left leg amputated after being mauled by her neighbor’s two pit bulls remained hospitalized Sunday in critical condition and could possibly lose her other leg and an arm, her husband said.

Emako Mendoza was attacked around 6:30 a.m. Saturday inside the fenced backyard of her house on Alleghany Street near Potomac Street in San Diego’s Paradise Hills neighborhood. Her husband, James Mendoza, said his wife is covered in bite wounds on her arms, back, buttocks and right leg.

Her left leg from her knee down was amputated Saturday at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest. She may still lose her left arm, which is badly mangled, Mendoza said.

“She’s in a terrible amount of pain. She’s so fragile to begin with. She just can’t handle this pain,” he said of his wife of 53 years. Over the past 10 years, she has had three surgeries, he said.

She was attacked while retrieving the newspaper from the driveway and walking it around to the back of the house to put it on the kitchen table for her husband — a ritual she did every morning at the home where the family has lived for 42 years.

Neighbor Alba Cornelio’s two pit bulls were euthanized Saturday after the attack, a county animal control official said. Somehow the dogs had gotten into the Mendoza family’s gated backyard.

A 12-year-old girl who answered the door at Cornelio’s house said authorities also confiscated 11 pit bull puppies born to one of the dogs that was put down. Four small dogs are still at the home, she said.

James Mendoza, 78, said he learned about Saturday’s dog attack when he was awakened by two teenage neighbors ringing the door bell. He ran down stairs to find his wife outside and covered in “blood and wounds after (the dogs) chewed her up,” he said.

She was under heavy sedation Sunday, but her husband, son and two of her four grandsons visited her at the hospital.

Mendoza said he met his wife in Japan when he was in the Navy. Through tears, he recalled Sunday that they went dancing on their first date in 1954.

“She just used to love to go dancing,” Mendoza said.

It was a hobby Emako Mendoza continued until a few years ago, dancing with a VFW group of Japanese friends in National City, her husband said.
