Ryan Mania wrote his name into the Aintree hall of fame by winning the Grand National on Auroras Encore, then revealed he almost quit two years ago.

The 23-year-old from Borders town Galashiels, who came through on the 66-1 outsider in his first attempt at the sport’s toughest race, seemed to have hit rock bottom in 2011 when his rides dried up.

Mania had been touted as one of jump racing’s rising stars as a teenager, but when his employer Howard Johnson was banned from racing for horse welfare breaches and handed in his racing permit, Mania was ready to turn his back on the sport he loved.

He said last night: ‘I didn’t know what I was going to do. The rides dried up and I got disillusioned.

‘So I took six months off and worked for a hunt in the north of Scotland. It was going to be a year but then I thought, “What am I doing?”

‘I enjoyed my time with the hunt but then I missed racing. Sue and Harvey Smith took me back and it’s been great going since then.’

His decision to come back produced a result beyond his wildest dreams yesterday at Aintree.

Mania explained: ‘Coming to the second last I thought, “This is great I’m going to be placed”, then I couldn’t believe my luck because the front two [Teaforthree and Oscar Time] stopped in front of me at the last and I said to myself, “This isn’t happening”.

‘So I got down and gave him a shove and he quickened on past them. It’s unbelievable – the whole thing’s mad.’

Harvey Smith, trainer Sue’s husband, said: ‘We saw today what Ryan can do. He’s a good rider. He said to me, “I’ve got a plan”. I said, “Well, go out and execute it!” It was his first National but he’s a horseman. There are jockeys but he’s a horseman, and there aren’t many horsemen left.’

Despite his biggest ever payday and carving his name into the history books as one of the youngest winners of the world’s most famous steeplechase, celebrations were not on the agenda: ‘I’m going to bed early as I’m riding at Hexham tomorrow.

‘Everyone else will turn up with sore heads but I’ll be OK. It’s my job and I’ve got to stay professional.’
