North Korea’s state-run news media announced on Wednesday that its young leader Kim Jong-un had married, and identified his wife as Ri Sol-ju.

A woman seen with Kim Jong-Un at recent events in Pyongyang was identified as his wife, Ri Sol-ju.

The North’s Central TV showed Mr. Kim visiting an amusement park in the capital, Pyongyang, with a young stylish woman, and identified her as “Comrade Ri Sol-ju, wife of Marshal Kim Jong-un,” South Korean officials said. A North Korean state-run radio station also identified the woman as Mr. Kim’s wife.

In recent weeks, North Korean media has shown the same woman accompanying Mr. Kim to several state functions, triggering speculation over who she was. The couple attended a July 6 concert that featured Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters. They later visited a kindergarten together.

The North Korean television report did not say when the couple was married.

Mr. Kim, still believed to be in his late 20s, took over top leadership in North Korea after his father, Kim Jong-il, died in December.

He has recently begun projecting himself as a young leader self-confident enough to attempt a different ruling style from that of his dour and reclusive father. North Korean television showed Mr. Kim raising a thumb at a girl group singing the theme song of the iconic American movie “Rocky” during the same concert that featured Mickey Mouse.

By showing up with his wife in public, Mr. Kim distinguished himself from his father. During Kim Jong-il’s rule, most ordinary North Koreans had never seen their first lady on television. Defectors from the North said that most North Koreans did not know who their first lady was when Mr. Kim was in power.

In the past decade, the bubblegum pop and kitsch dance routines of South Korea’s K-pop bands have taken the charts by storm in Asia and Latin America. But north across the Korean border, broadcasters are promoting a track less likely to become an international success: a new signature song for youthful leader Kim Jong-un.

The anthem, titled Onwards Toward the Final Victory, is part of a propaganda drive to build up the image of the “great successor”. Radio and television are airing it several times a day and the score has been printed in the official newspaper Rodong Sinmun.

“The song hardens the will of the Korean army and people to devote their all to the prosperity of the country with high national pride,” said the state run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

Unlike the songs associated with his father and grandfather, it does not specifically mention Kim. It takes its title from the closing words of his address marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of his grandfather, the country’s founder, Kim II-sung.

“It’s like remixing his speech. It’s not really a paean to him,” said John Delury, an expert on North Korea at Yonsei University in Seoul.

Hong Kwang Sun, vice-minister of culture, told KCNA: “The song is just a powerful trumpet call of the revolution encouraging the army and people in the drive to build a thriving nation as well as a stirring drumbeat of victory.”

Professor Keith Howard of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies said music, song and dance performances were important at events such as the mass games and this spring’s celebrations of Kim II-sung’s centenary. The spectacles are so important that tap-dancing shoes have been among the clandestine cargos intercepted en route to North Korea. UN sanctions ban the export of luxury goods to the state.

Howard noted that songs have become directly linked to ideological developments in recent years. “If a newsreader tells you something five or six times you get bored. If you like the song you don’t get quite so bored,” he said.

The tune previously associated with Kim Jong-un, Footsteps, did not include a specific reference either, but was issued while his father was alive and before he had a formal position.

“It’s a bit odd [not to mention him] now that he’s leader … Some people are beginning to suggest we are seeing a situation where the father and son are being more or less deified and the grandson is just the current leader,” Howard said.

Delury added: “There’s still, definitely, a massive campaign to pump up his image and credentials … [Omitting his name] is probably related to the fact that he’s so young they have to phase in the larger-than-life elements of his public persona.”

He was intrigued that the song referred to the North as a “country” – rather than the more commonly used “great power”.

KCNA claimed in 2009 that Song of General Kim II-sung and No Motherland Without You, Kim Jong-il’s signature tune, were being beamed through space following the North’s satellite launch. Other countries said the device had never made it into orbit.

Graphic: The world's most dangerous border

November 29, 2010 2:39 a.m. EST

Joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States continued in the Yellow Sea on Monday as tensions with nearby North Korea continue to brew.

On Monday, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak said South Korea will “firmly” respond to future provocations from North Korea and declared that his nation “cannot remain patient” in the face of continued hostility from Pyongyang.

“Fellow citizens, at this point, actions are more important than words,” Lee said in a televised address. “Please have trust in the government and the military and support us.”

The divided peninsula — tense at the best of times — has been near the boiling point since Tuesday, when four people died in a North Korean artillery barrage that targeted the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong.

Lee called that attack an “inhuman crime” that followed decades of previous attacks from North Korea, including the sinking of the South Korean warship Cheonan in March.

North Korea has consistently denied responsibility for the sinking of the Cheonan, which killed 46 South Korean sailors.

“It is difficult at this point to expect North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons or military adventurism,” Lee said. “We are now clearly aware that we cannot stay patient and be generous. That will only give rise to bigger provocations.”

Lee’s address came a day after South Korean and U.S. forces started joint military exercises Sunday, prompting a furious response from North Korea.

The aircraft carrier USS George Washington joined South Korea’s forces near the coasts of China and North Korea for the four-day drill, which the North called “no more than an attempt to find a pretext for aggression and ignite a war at any cost,” according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

China, North Korea’s closest ally, called Sunday for an emergency meeting of the six major powers involved in talks about the Korean peninsula.

Top diplomats from the six nations — which also include Japan, the United States and Russia — need to meet soon to “maintain peace and stability on the peninsula and ease the tension” in the region, Beijing’s special representative for the region, Wu Dawei, said Sunday.

A top Chinese envoy met with Lee on Sunday, and a high-ranking North Korean official will visit Beijing on Tuesday, China’s Xinhua news agency said.

South Korea said Sunday it did not think the time was right for a resumption of the six-party talks, but said it would “bear in mind” the Chinese proposal.

In Washington, meanwhile, a State Department official told CNN that the United States is consulting with its allies, but resumed six-party talks “cannot substitute for action by North Korea to comply with its obligations.”

“Clear steps by North Korea are needed to demonstrate a change of behavior,” said the official, who was not authorized to speak for attribution.

And U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, said on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday that the flare-up exposed the failure of “continued appeasement” of North Korea by Republican and Democratic administrations.

He said the United States has given North Korea more than $1 billion in aid over the past 15 years with the goal of getting them to the negotiating table.

“It seems the purpose of everything is to get the North Koreans to the table,” said McCain, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee. “The North Koreans’ only claim to their position on the world stage is their nuclear capability. And they have a terrible, most repressive, oppressive regime in the world. They have hundreds of thousands of people in slave labor camps. And all of that seems to be sacrificed in the altar of, quote, ‘negotiations.'”

Meanwhile, the Washington-based ANSWER Coalition called for “an end to the U.S.-South Korean provocations” and announced rallies in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, California, on Monday.

“The United States and South Korean governments have been pursuing a policy of deliberate provocation over the past several months,” targeting North Korea and China, ANSWER’s website states.

“While hypocritically calling for ‘calm’ in words, Washington is escalating the crisis by its actions,” it said, referring to the U.S.-South Korea military exercises and the USS George Washington.

In his Monday speech, South Korea’s Lee said efforts to resolve the international standoff through negotiations and humanitarian assistance to the North were met with “nuclear development and the sinking of the Cheonan.”

He said the attack on Yeonpyeong Island would have been unlawful even in wartime, adding, “I cannot but be angered at their cruelty.”

North Korea said the South provoked the attack because shells from a South Korean millitary drill landed in the North’s waters.

The North called reports of civilian casualties part of South Korea’s “propaganda campaign” and accused the “enemy” of creating “a human shield by deploying civilians around artillery positions and inside military facilities before the launch of the provocation.”

The violence has sparked anger and political turmoil in South Korea.

The country’s defense minister, Kim Tae-young, resigned after the exchange of fire.

Veterans of the South Korean military protested over the weekend on the streets of Seoul, stating they were angry that their country’s government had not done enough to respond to the North’s shelling.

The tense maritime border between the two Koreas has become the major military flashpoint on the Korean peninsula in recent years.

The Yeonpyeong attack was the first direct artillery assault on South Korea since 1953, when an armistice ended fighting. North and South Korea are still technically at war.

North Korea said Saturday it will elect new party leaders at a rare meeting in September in what analysts say could be a move to strengthen a campaign to hand over power from supreme leader Kim Jong Il to his youngest son.

Kim, who suffered an apparent stroke in 2008, is believed to be grooming his youngest son, Kim Jong Un, to succeed him as leader of the nuclear-armed communist nation of 24 million. His health has raised regional concerns about instability and a possible power struggle if he were to die without naming a successor.

North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party will convene its conference in early September to elect “its highest leading body,” the country’s official Korean Central News Agency reported. The report did not elaborate.

The planned conference – first since 1966 – sparked speculation that the North could publicly announce Kim Jong Un as his father’s successor by giving him senior party jobs.

The conference “should be seen as a stage to publicize Kim Jong Un as a successor,” Cheong said, noting he could be elected to the party’s key positions, including a secretary of the party’s central committee.

Little is known about Kim Jong Un, including his exact age, though he is believed to be in his mid-20s. Kim Jong Il’s former sushi chef says in a 2003 memoir that the son looks and acts just like his father and is the leader’s favorite.

South Korea’s spy chief Won Sei-hoon said Thursday that North Korea has launched a propaganda campaign aimed at making its people adore the junior Kim.
