A MOB of men have launched a terrifying attack on a young woman outside a bar in India leaving her traumatised and covered in cigarette burns.
During the horrific ordeal, which reportedly lasted for 30 minutes, the woman was grabbed by the hair, pushed to the ground, beaten and stripped.
Footage of the shocking attack which happened last Monday was filmed by an off-duty journalist in city of Guwahati, northern India. It has caused outrage, with people furious at the slow police response.
Despite the police station being less than 2km away, officers took 45 minutes to respond.
“There are signs of cigarette burns all over her body, besides marks of severe injury … animal like treatment was meted out to the hapless girl,” Alka Lamba from the National Commission for Women (NWC) said.
The NWC sent a three-person team to Guwahati to investigate the incident.
“The need of the hour is to provide her good counselling so that she can resume her normal life,” Ms Lamba told the Times of India.
Dispur Police Station told The Times they received four phone calls during the attack but the officer who took the calls did not respond due to the absence of a woman constable.
“Then someone from a nearby hotel called Bhangagarh Police and cops from that PS (police station) reached the spot immediately and rescued the girl,” a police spokesperson said.
“Besides molesting her, she said few men tried to take her with them forcibly,” a Bhangagarh police spokesperson said.
Police believe there were at least 14 men involved in the attack. Four have been arrested. They are Dhanraj Basfor, a cleaner at Gauhati Medical College Hospital, Bulbul Das, a trader, Bikash Tiwari, a minor, and Mohammad Hafisuddin, a mason.
The 10 other suspects are believed to have fled to neighbouring Meghalaya.
