The next stop on David Beckham’s glamorous and jet-setting soccer career seems like a logical one: Paris.

On Thursday, hours after his private plane landed in the French capital, Beckham announced at a news conference that he would join Paris St.-Germain for the rest of the Ligue 1 season. He said he would donate his salary for the five-month deal to a local children’s charity.

For Paris St.-Germain, a club whose ambitions have swelled over the past year under the control of a new Qatari ownership group, the signing represents a major public relations coup, if not an actual boost for the team on the field.

Beckham, 37, one of the world’s most famous athletes, an Englishman who became a household name for his devastating right foot but also because of his good looks, was chased by several teams around the world. After finishing a six-year commitment with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer in December — he won back-to-back league titles in the last two seasons — he reportedly heard offers from at least one club on every continent where professional soccer is played.

“It’s an exciting city — it always has been, and it always will be,” Beckham said of Paris. “But now there’s a club that’s going to have a lot of success over the next 10, 15, 20 years.”

Wielding loads of fresh cash, Paris St.-Germain has added star players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva and Lucas Moura, as well as the respected coach Carlo Ancelotti. Ligue 1 has long been seen as a second-tier competition in Europe, but the club has looked determined to change that image on its own.

Beckham played down his arrival, saying he did not expect to be thrust into a featured role. But Paris St. Germain seemed happy to play him up, decorating the home page of its Web site with a black-and-white photograph of Beckham in a tie and jacket along with a headline proclaiming, “Beckham in Paris.”

Beckham, a former captain of England’s national team, has already played for some of the world’s biggest clubs. After rising through the youth system of Manchester United, where he won six league titles, he made a career stop with Real Madrid, where he won one league championship. His stay in Los Angeles included two winter loans to the Italian club A.C. Milan.

Fabien Barthez, a former goalkeeper for France’s national team who played with Beckham at Manchester United, said the move was good for French soccer.

“It shakes things up,” he told France Info radio. “It’s true that there are some who will always talk,” he went on, referring to criticisms that Beckham represents little more than a grab for publicity. “But we know that music.”

Barthez added, “You mustn’t forget what the guy has lived, and all the experience, all this lived experience that he can bring to the young players and the team.”

Even as Beckham’s athleticism has deteriorated, he has remained a global star. Wherever he and his family have lived, the attention of soccer fans, journalists and paparazzi has followed. This time, Beckham’s wife, the pop singer turned fashion designer Victoria Beckham, and three sons will remain in London, where the children attend school.

Beckham’s stay in Paris, meanwhile, will require some refresher language courses.

“I haven’t spoken French for quite a few years, since I was in school,” said Beckham, sending cameras clicking as he flashed his signature smile. “So, yeah, that’s quite a few years. I’m definitely going to have to brush up on it.”

But one reporter practically begged Beckham to say a sentence, or even just a word, in French.

After a pause, Beckham said, “Bon jour.”

pregnant wife on Facebook.

Beneath the shot – in which the singer-turned-designer appeared to be
sunbathing – he wrote: “Took this pic of Victoria while she wasn’t looking. She looks amazing,
so close now to the baby being born!”

On Saturday, the former England footballer met the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their
visit
to California.

But he was without his 37-year-old wife on the eve of their daughter’s

Buying flights to South Africa, finding a hotel and picking up match tickets represents a considerable investment in both time and money, so fans at Green Point Stadium were understandably frustrated by the woeful display England put on against Algeria last night. While most chose to convey their disappointment via the medium of the “boo“, one supporter took things a little further. Shortly after the game, reports on BBC Radio 5 Live suggested an angry fan had breached security and made his way to the England dressing room, and said reports have been confirmed by the press this morning. From The Telegraph:

The supporter managed to get past security at the Green Point stadium in Cape Town following England’s lacklustre goalless draw against Algeria in order to berate the players.

It is understood he gained access to the team dressing room after the players had left the pitch.

The disgruntled fan is understood to have confronted former England captain David Beckham over the team’s poor performance.

The man, who was dressed in an England shirt, was able to breach several levels of security in order to reach the team.

Of all the people that angry fan could have confronted, he went for Beckham. The guy whose sole purpose at this tournament is to stand on the touchline and look fabulously handsome in the official England suit. He could have shouted at Fabio Capello for the rigid and inflexible tactics that resulted in Wayne Rooney playing on the left of midfield, or captain Steven Gerrard, whose lack of ideas after the game almost matched his lack of ideas during it. But no, he went for the guy with the least culpability in the room.

After exposing a worrying hole in stadium security, Reuters this morning say that the fan is still at large, as the England security forces who ejected him allowed him to “slip away into the crowd” like a villain in 24, rather than handing him over to the police.

Global football icon David Beckham has delivered the 1,752-page bid book which he hopes will persuade Fifa to award England the 2018 World Cup.

The hosts for 2018 and 2022 will be announced on 2 December, with Russia and Australia also among the bidders.

“We have a lot of passion; football is something which runs through our veins,” said Beckham, who gave the book to Fifa chief Sepp Blatter in Zurich.

Blatter revealed he had received a call from new Prime Minister David Cameron.

Nine candidates, including a joint Dutch-Belgian team, are handing over their bids to Blatter on Friday.

The English delegation were introduced by Blatter as representing “the motherland of football”.

Beckham was joined on stage by Fifa vice-president Geoff Thompson, England 2018 chief executive Andy Anson and Football Association chairman Lord Triesman, who confirmed to Blatter that England would also like to be considered for the 2022 event.

In a short speech, Beckham sought to convey the place of football at the heart of English culture.

“As you will see by our bid book we have a lot of passion for the game and bringing the biggest sporting event in the world to our country,” said Beckham.

“As a player you always dream of playing in the World Cup in your own country so you will see the emotion this will bring to us and our fans.

“This is something that runs through our country and through our veins.”

Blatter thanked the team for their “passion and support for football” which was “well-known around the world”, before referring to his phone call from Cameron on Thursday.

“Not only did he express his determination to be behind this bid, but also his determination to be behind the World Cup 2010 in South Africa,” said Blatter.

“I am very happy this delegation is bidding for 2018. It is really open.”

A Downing Street spokesman said Cameron contacted Blatter to stress the new coalition government’s support for the bid.

“He reminded Mr Blatter that football was the national sport and people in England were extremely passionate about football,” the spokesman said.

“He said that this country has great infrastructure and facilities and has a history of delivering great major sporting events like Euro 96; he said people in England were fully behind the bid.”

England bid organisers believe that one of their trump cards is the ability to drive up the commercial revenues of the event.

Fifa is expected to net £2.1bn in TV and sponsorship from the 2010 World Cup, and England estimates it can increase that income by a third, taking it near the £3bn mark.

In 2005 Beckham played a part in helping London win the right to stage the 2012 Olympics and the FA is hoping he can have a similarly galvanising effect in persuading Fifa to allow England to stage the World Cup for the first time since 1966.

And the former England captain has published a two-page letter outlining the strengths of the 2018 bid.

The book covers details of the bid such as stadiums, transport, security, marketing and football and social development.

Secretary of State for Culture, the Olympics, Media and Sport Jeremy Hunt said: “We would put on a fantastic football festival and fans from around the world would be welcomed with open arms.

“We have the stadiums and infrastructure in place, the atmosphere would be electric and the tournament’s legacy would benefit the lives of people all over the world.”

A European bid is tipped to get the 2018 tournament with England up against Russia and joint bids from Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands.

The other bidders, although they are mainly focused on the 2022 tournament, are Australia, the United States, Japan, Qatar and South Korea.

Blatter had already spoken in glowing terms of England’s bid which includes 12 towns and cities from Sunderland to Plymouth, calling it “the easiest bid in the world” – but also described the plans put forward by Russia as “remarkable.”
