Kathryn Liknes, from left, Nathan O'Brien and Alvin Liknes

July 06, 2014             12:22 PM MT

The man police have called a ‘person of interest’ in connection with the disappearance of a missing Calgary family faces a new charge this weekend related to a decades-old case of identity theft and also has a link to the Liknes family.

Douglas Garland, who was taken in for questioning from a rural Airdrie property on Friday, has a criminal history, including drug trafficking and possession of stolen property after he was caught making amphetamines on his parents’ Airdrie acreage in 1992.

Police took Garland into custody for questioning related to the search for five-year-old Nathan O’Brien and his grandparents, Kathy and Alvin Liknes, and CBC News has learned police have charged him with stealing the identity of Matthew Kemper Hartley — a 14-year-old Alberta boy killed in a car crash in 1980.

After failing to appear at court in 1992 for drug charges, the then 33-year-old Garland disappeared.

A document from the Federal Court of Appeal indicates Garland was later discovered living under Hartley’s stolen identity in Vancouver.

The same document says Garland suffers from attention deficit disorder and had attended medical school in Alberta for one year before suffering a mental breakdown.

Garland told the court at the time he had been traumatized after causing what he described as a horrific accident after falling asleep behind the wheel.

Garland returned to Calgary after being discovered living in Vancouver and pleaded guilty to several of the charges in connection to the drug bust and stolen identity, while the others were dropped.

While Garland had already confessed to stealing Matthew Hartley’s identity in the 1990s when he was hiding out in Vancouver, the new charge laid this weekend relates to the recent use of that same identity and allows police to keep him remanded in custody until at least tomorrow.

CBC News learned Garland was released from questioning specifically in regards to the Nathan O’Brien disappearance, but remained in police custody in relation to the new charge of identity theft laid against him this weekend.

On Monday, Garland will make a court appearance related to his new charge of identity theft.

Garland has not been named as a suspect in the disappearances.

CBC News has also learned that Garland has a connection to the Liknes family through his sister.

His sister lists Nathan O’Brien’s parents, Rod and Jennifer, as well as Kathy Liknes as ‘friends’ on Facebook.

She also lists one member of the Liknes family as a niece.

New search area blocked off

Earlier Sunday, police blocked off a new search area at a rural property northeast of Calgary and brought in the canine unit to help with the investigation into the disappearances of three Calgary family members.

Around 2:45 p.m. MT, investigators blocked off a new site north of the rural Airdrie property where they have been searching for clues since Friday night. The field has a large body of water and a police helicopter has been seen hovering over the water over the course of the afternoon.

Several officers and a dog are currently in the field.

Investigators say the size of the property makes it likely their search may not wrap up until sometime Monday.

They seized a vehicle from the property that they say is similar in description to the one captured on CCTV images released Friday but can’t confirm whether the vehicle is the same one in the photo or whether it is even linked to the case at all.

Police say they are still trying to determine whether Garland, the property, or the vehicle they seized at the property on Saturday, are linked to their investigation.

Neighbours tie ribbons of hope to homes

O’Brien and his grandparents were reported missing on Monday morning after Nathan’s mother arrived to pick up her son from a sleepover at the Liknes’s Parkhill house. The family had been over throughout the weekend helping out with an estate sale the Liknes’s were holding ahead of a planned move to Edmonton.

Parkhill residents are now tying ribbons to their homes in a symbol of hope and support for the missing family members.

The Parkhill Stanley Park Community Association says the ribbons are meant to increase awareness and express hope for the safe return of Nathan and the Likneses.

Over the past two days, volunteers have been distributing green ribbons to people in the area to tie to the front of their homes.

At a news conference Saturday evening, Duty Insp. Joel Matthews with the Calgary Police Service said investigators had not found Nathan or his grandparents during the search, which is why the Amber Alert issued almost a week ago remains in effect.

During a shoulder-to-shoulder search in a field at the property, Matthews says a white flag was put in place at a site in the field but he could not comment on what that means.

Matthews said they received a tip Friday night that led them to investigate the property but he couldn’t say what gave the tip weight.

“We want to make sure we cover off every avenue,” he said.

Police still seek anyone at estate sale

Police are still looking to speak with anyone who attended the Liknes’s estate sale on June 27, 28 and 29.

Investigators estimate between 200 and 300 people went through the home over the course of the weekend but they are trying to get an idea of what was purchased and what remains in the home.

They say there was no sign of forced entry into the home but that blood found inside confirms that a violent incident did take place there.

Police could not say who the blood belonged to, only that whoever it was from would have been “in medical distress.”

The forensics unit also examined “marks” along the outside of the house but police could not confirm whether those marks are blood.

Police say they have a number of theories so far as to what took place but they aren’t making those public.

Anyone with information about the case can call the Calgary Police Service at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

PHOTO: Roy Cockrum, 58, of Knoxville receives his $259.8 million Powerball prize from Tennessee Lottery CEO Rebecca Hargrove, July 3, 2014, in Nashville, Tenn.

A Knoxville, Tennessee, man has claimed the $259.9 million Powerball jackpot and plans to donate most of the money to support the performing arts.

Roy Cockrum, 58, became America’s newest millionaire Thursday as he accepted the mega check at Tennessee Lottery headquarters in Nashville. Lottery officials say it’s the largest prize ever won in Tennessee Lottery history.

Cockrum, who will accept a lump sum payment of $115 million, said he plans to use most of the money to start a foundation that will support performing arts organizations around the country. Cockrum said his years of living with a vow of poverty has prepared him well for donating the money.

“It’s going to be my job to work very hard to make sure that every single penny of this prize is a blessing to whoever it touches,” Cockrum said in his brief remarks during a Thursday news conference.

Cocrum worked for 20 years as an actor and stage manager for theater and TV productions.

He later became known as Brother Roy, as he followed a call to religious service with The Society of Saint John the Evangelist, an Episcopal religious community in Cambridge, Massachusetts. According to the society’s “Rule of Life,” members of the monastic order take “lifelong vows of poverty, celibacy and obedience in an enduring fellowship.”

Steven Robles, 40, was bitten by a seven-foot great white shark around 9.30 a.m. Saturday morning at Manhattan Beach after the beast escaped from a fisherman

A man was mauled by a great white shark this weekend at a popular southern California beach.

Steven Robles, 40, was bitten by a seven-foot great white shark around 9.30 a.m. Saturday morning at Manhattan Beach after the beast escaped from a fisherman.

CBS Los Angeles reports Robles is in stable condition at the UCLA Harbor Medical Center.

He was reportedly with a group of 15 frequent swimmers who dive into the water every Saturday in popular spots from Hermosa to Manhattan Beach Pier, and who were training for an International Swim Meet.

Robles told reporters he punched the shark in the nose, which is a frequently recommended strategy when faced with an attack.

Robles credits the quick thinking, along with God’s intervention, for his survival.

A religious man, he recently swam to raise money for his Hermosa Beach church.

The shark had reportedly been hooked by a fisherman, panicked and bit Robles in the ribs, back and right arm, causing multiple puncture wounds, police told Redondo Patch.

Witnesses told the Los Angeles Times the shark had been on the fishing line for nearly an hour and panicked, leading to the attack.

He was in the water while part of a group training, the site said, and was still conscious when loaded into the ambulance.

More than half an hour prior to the attack, a fisherman hooked the beast, but set it loose when it attacked Robles, witnesses told Patch.

He was taken ashore by surfers while lifeguards urged people to get to the shore and helicopters soon began hovering over the beach.

A surfer in the water near the victim told the New York Daily News of the terrifying attack.

‘There was blood everywhere and I realized that something had gotten him,’ said Casey Fenwick. ‘He was screaming the whole time and I understand why.

‘I was just worried about getting this guy in and on the board so somebody could help.’

Video from the scene shows the bedlam that ensued as he was pulled to safety.

An incredulous North Carolina mother was banned from Facebook for 24-hours after the social media giant labeled a picture she uploaded of her two-year-old daughter, ‘pornographic’.

Photographer, Jill White said that she fell foul of Facebook’s notoriously strict guidelines on posting nude children after they received a complaint about her innocent recreation of the famous ‘Copperton girl’ pose from the 1950s ad campaign.

White’s profile was suspended from the site for a day after she ignored a request to remove an unedited version of the photo that shows daughter Willa’s bathing suit being pulled down on July 3.

She replaced that picture with a version that has a smiley face ’emoji’ over her backside instead, but that too was reported, but Facebook has said that this picture meets their terms and conditions.

The original Coppertone advertisement showed a little girl’s swimming costume being pulled down by a small dog, to expose her backside and White said she was at the beach recently near her Hickory home when she decided to recreate it.

‘I posted the photo on Coppertone’s Facebook,’ White told WBTV. ‘We thought it would be cute because of the old Coppertone ad and her tan line looked like that.’

However, someone reported the picture to Facebook because they found the image of the little girl’s bare backside offensive.

Responding, Facebook sent her a notice asking her to either delete the picture, change her privacy settings so that the picture was not public or to ignore.

‘Well I ignored it,’ White said. ‘No way did I think it would fit the criteria of nudity or pornography and if you read the terms of use in settings no where does it state that this would be considered either.’

Facebook disagreed with this and banned White from the site for 24 hours.

This is because according to their terms and conditions which all members sign up to, the social media giant can ‘remove content that violates our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.

‘If we determine you’ve posted something that violates our terms, you may receive a warning or become disabled, depending on how severe the violation is.’

White told WBTV that she could not post the picture to her personal profile nor the fan page she had created for her photography firm.

‘It is hard. With over 1 billion people using Facebook we have to put in place a set of universal guidelines that respect the views of a wide range of people. These policies are designed to ensure Facebook remains a  safe, secure and trusted environment for everyone on Facebook,’ said a Facebook spokesperson to MailOnline.

Indeed, when her ban was lifted she altered the picture slightly to reflect sensitivities and reposted this new image.

‘I got back on with another photo, this time a big Emoji face on the area of the butt crack,’ she said.

‘Now it is being reviewed again for nudity and pornography.’

Facebook have said that they have examined this photograph and find it meets their terms and conditions.

‘Facebook has a strict policy against the sharing of pornographic content and any explicitly sexual content where a minor is involved,’ the Terms of Service state.

‘We also impose limitations on the display of nudity. We aspire to respect people’s right to share content of personal importance.’

White says neither of the photos she posted should be considered pornographic.

‘I despise pornography and anything to do with it,” she said. “I would never ever post a pornographic photo. I am anti-porn.’

White also told WBTV that the mother of the other little girl agreed for her to post the photo.

‘Actually, she is the one that insisted,’ White said. ‘I am outraged about this.

Although last year saw the return of groups like Neutral Milk Hotel, The Pixies and My Bloody Valentine with new music, it still comes as a surprise that Pink Floyd will have a new album out in October. This year is the 20th anniversary of their last album, 1994′s Division Bell.

David Gilmour’s wife, Polly Samson, shared information about the new music via a Tweet last night, adding that it will be based on 1994 sessions with the late Richard Wright and that it’s his “swansong and very beautiful.”

The record will be called The Endless River, and Samson’s announcement sparked another, from singer Durga McBroom-Hudson, who toured with the band during the eighties and nineties. In a Facebook post, Durga confirmed her involvement with the project and shared a picture from the recording sessions.

“The recording did start during The Division Bell sessions (and yes, it was the side project originally titled The Big Spliff that [Pink Floyd’s drummer] Nick Mason spoke about), which is why there are Richard Wright tracks on it.” she wrote in a further Facebook comment on the photo.

“But David and Nick have gone in and done a lot more since then. It was originally to be a completely instrumental recording, but I came in last December and sang on a few tracks. David then expanded on my backing vocals and has done a lead on at least one of them. That’s the song you see being worked on in the photo.”

She commented further that all the songs are unreleased—so they’re all brand new to our ears. Although Durga confirms that there are unreleased Richard Wright songs on the record, there’s no word on whether or not the other founding member of Pink Floyd, Roger Waters will be involved. He left Pink Floyd in 1983 to focus on his solo career. David Gilmour also announced a solo album last fall, but he hasn’t commented on how the new Pink Floyd record will affect that, if it all.

Some sites were reporting that Pink Floyd’s recording engineer Andy Jackson confirmed his work on the album to the fan news site the Floydian Slip, but that post has now been removed.

An official announcement will probably come this week.
