If free agent center Dwight Howard ultimately decides to sign with the Houston Rockets, he may not be the only big-name free agent heading that way.

According to two people with knowledge of the situation, the Rockets’ Monday meeting with free agent forward Josh Smith in Los Angeles included a discussion about a possible partnership with him and his childhood friend from Atlanta in Howard.

Smith has long been known to be on the Rockets’ radar, but he is not viewed solely as a backup plan to Howard should he decide to sign elsewhere and the possibility remains of another superteam being created with Howard and Smith joining franchise centerpiece James Harden. The people spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the talks.

There would be serious hurdles to this sort of deal, but the Rockets may be able to get it done if they could convince Smith’s former team, the Atlanta Hawks, to take part in a sign-and-trade that would clear the necessary salary cap space to sign both players.

To that end, a CBSSports.com report on Sunday indicated that the Rockets have been discussing possible trades involving center Omer Asik and point guard Jeremy Lin with other teams. Both players are scheduled to earn $8.3 million in each of the next two seasons, meaning they could possibly be moved as a way to free up the funds to bring Howard and Smith together.

Howard completed his free agency meetings on Tuesday by meeting with the Los Angeles Lakers. He met with the Rockets first on Sunday night, followed by Golden State and Atlanta on Monday and the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday before the Lakers. Smith is also being targeted by the Detroit Pistons and is believed to have at least five suitors.

Today, she performs at various senior homes in her community and teaches piano lessons to blind children. Additionally, Jacqueline is a trained dancer. She is versed in ballet, tap and modern jazz. She also enjoys playing golf in her spare time.

Jacqueline would like to pursue a career in medicine and commit herself to providing health care to her community members. She was accepted into one of the University of New Mexico’s highly competitive medical programs and plans to attend school there in the fall.

Ben Hogan used a 1-iron for a historic shot that helped him win the 1950 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club. Under far different circumstances, PGA Tour rookie Shawn Stefani had a memorable moment with his 4-iron Sunday.

It had not been a weekend to celebrate for Stefani. He shot an 85 (+15) on Saturday. But he lifted his arms in the air and jumped for joy Sunday after making a hole in one on the tough par-3 17th.

When he teed up at the 229-yard 17th in the final round, the 31-year-old from Houston was 20 over par. But he said he’d still enjoyed playing before the big crowds this week.

“It was kind of funny. I got up on the tee after 16 and walked to the tee, and I usually don’t look at crowds,” he said. “I’m not paying attention to it. But I kind of looked up there to see just how many people were in the stands. And the stands were full.”

His tee shot took a helpful bounce off the rough on a slope to the left of the green. Then the ball rolled the width of the undulating green and curved right into the cup.

Stefani’s caddie, Chris Callas, jumped up and down, too.

“I wasn’t really thinking about doing anything spectacular. It just happened,” Stefani said. “But to do that on that hole in this tournament is something that I’ll never forget as long as live. And we’ll have to wait and see what happens on (ESPN) SportsCenter(Sunday night).”

The 6-2, 205-pounder celebrated like a linebacker who’d just made a big sack.

“I can’t remember anything on the tee. It happened. I jumped up and down, slapped some hands, and I really don’t know what happened after that,” he said.

Stefani’s best finish this year has been a seventh place at the Tampa Bay Championship. Tough he bogeyed his last hole Sunday, Stefani still shot a one under 69 for the round. He finished the tournament 19 over par.

Stefani’s best finishes this year have been a tie for seventh at the Tampa Bay Championship in March and tie for seventh this month at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

His hole-in-one was the first during an Open at Merion, which has hosted five of them and the 43rd in U.S. Open history. The previous one was last year by John Peterson on the 199-yard 13th hole at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

A Valhalla, N.Y., man pleaded not guilty Tuesday even as police remained busy removing thousands of pounds of professional-grade fireworks from his basement.

Public Safety Commissioner George Longworth, whose Westchester County department carried out the operation with federal agents, called this one of the largest seizures of illegal fireworks in the county. The discovery prompted the evacuation of several neighboring homes.

Stephen Surace, 53, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment, felonies, and unlawfully dealing in fireworks, a misdemeanor.

He was taken into custody late Monday after an undercover county officer purchased $1,000 worthof fireworks. Authorities then searched his home and found that the 1,500-square-foot basement was stacked floor to ceiling with several hundred boxes of fireworks, many the same kind used in commercial displays such as the Macy’s Fourth of July celebration in Manhattan, county police said.

“Based on the volume of material and the potential explosive hazard, the decision was made to move immediately to arrest Mr. Surace and secure the home,” Longworth said.

Four truckloads of fireworks, weighing about 3 tons, were removed by a Westchester County police hazardous devices unit and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

“If that amount was ever detonated by accident, it would definitely have destroyed that house and probably houses surrounding it,” ATF spokesman Charles Mulham said after surveying the basement.

Federal agents and county police spent several hours removing fireworks from the 4,500-square-foot home. The boxes included basketball-sized mortars that are more like explosives than fireworks, police said.

“It’s the equivalent of having a big bomb in the basement of your house,” county police spokesman Kieran O’Leary said.

Some of the boxes were labeled “fiery cocktail,” “diamond rattler” and “assorted cakes.” Others said “Made in China.”

Surace is believed to have purchased the fireworks in Pennsylvania, though Mulham of the ATF said “our investigation into the origin and source of these professional-grade fireworks is just beginning.”

Neighbors gathered to watch the police activity and news crews. Gail Morrow, a longtime neighbor, said that for years Surace would put on fireworks displays in his yard on July 4 and other holidays.

“We used to sit in our kitchen and look out and see these beautiful fireworks,” Morrow said. “It’s going to be the end of the show, I guess.”

An 11-foot-long mako shark, weighing in at 1,323.5 pounds, is no tall tale. The shark, caught off the southern California coast, was reeled in by Jason Johnston of Mesquite, Texas, and its size might be a world record.

The angler made the giant catch—using chopped fish as bait—while on a charter fishing trip off Huntington Beach, Calif., on Monday. It didn’t come easy, reports CBS Los Angeles.

“He took out a quarter-mile of line … and five times he came out of the water over 20 feet,” Johnston told the station. “It was amazing.”

He added, “It’s unreal. This thing is definitely a killing machine. Any wrong step, I could have gone out of the boat and down to the bottom of the ocean.”

Johnston had plans to go out again Tuesday with the same charter boat to try his luck a second time.

According to the local CBS station, the shark’s measurements have not been officially confirmed as a world record. But the ginormous shark, which will be donated to research, has already provided Johnston with the story of a lifetime.

Ask anyone who’s lost a large amount of weight what jumpstarted their journey to better health, and they’ll probably tell you about their “light bulb moment,” the instant that they decided they’d had enough and were willing to do whatever it took to change. For LA-based musician and clothing designer Papa Joe Aviance, that moment arrived in 2009 when his first house music release, “Last Night a DJ Saved my Life,” hit #6 on the Billboard Magazine Dance Charts. When he saw the music video for the song—which at that time was playing on MTV and VH1—he couldn’t get over how large he’d become. “I was 450 pounds—I was two cheeseburgers away from diabetes or high cholesterol,” recalls Aviance. “I had been big for pretty much all of my life, and I was sick of hating myself. It was now or never.”

To start, he trashed nearly all the contents of his kitchen. “I cleared everything out of my fridge that was going to get in the way of me losing weight—cookies, candy, sodas,” he says. “I was only going to drink water or unsweetened iced tea, and no more fast food. At that point, I’d  been drinking a two-liter bottle of Mountain Dew every day, and if I went through any local drive-thru, they knew my name—that’s how often I used to eat that stuff.”

But he had a roadblock to contend with—at the time, he was broke. Aviance, who was then pursuing music and clothing design on the side, had recently been laid off work. “I was unemployed and couldn’t afford a gym membership or fancy diets,” says Aviance. “I realized that walking was the easiest exercise I could do and it cost nothing. So I grabbed my dance music and tennis shoes, and started walking.” (Walk off the weight with these 14 walking workouts to burn fat and boost energy!)

At first, his walks were short—to the end of his block and back to grab the daily Billboard. “The first time around the block—I couldn’t even do it, it was just mounds of sweat,” he says. But he kept at it. One trip around the block became two, and soon he was walking a few miles every day.

Only $50 Per Week for Food

While he was determined to eat better, Aviance had to find a way to do it on a shoestring budget. “A friend told me I should check out the 99-Cent Store. Since I couldn’t afford Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s, I decided to see what they had.” Aviance was pleasantly surprised to find that the 99-Cent Store in his neighborhood had plenty of healthy foods to choose from. “Oatmeal, raisins, nuts, bananas, apples, oranges, bell peppers, spinach, salad dressing, tuna fish, eggs… I was shocked. I was blown away,” recalls Aviance. “It was a huge savings. I literally spent no more than $50 a week on food.” (Feeding a family? You can still do it on the (healthy) cheap—here are 20 ways to feed your family for $100 a week.)

Within three to four weeks, Aviance started to see changes. “And within 3 months, I was like ‘Hey, this is working!” he laughs. “I started to take all of my clothes to a seamstress so she could take everything in. I was still too broke to go out and buy new clothes, but I didn’t care. I was on a mission.”

Aviance’s morning walks become so regular, that people in his neighborhood started to take notice. “Since I walk every morning, people have started giving me high fives. I felt like a mini rock star in my community. I’ve even had people stop me and tell them I motivated and inspired them to start walking.”

Low-Cost Healthy Meals

Papa Joe was able to prepare a variety of healthy meals using ingredients he purchased at the 99-Cent Store. Here are a several examples of what he ate on his diet.

Breakfasts
1.  3 egg omelette with spinach, green pepper, tomatoes, and 2 slices of wheat toast
2.  Cottage cheese with fresh fruit (oranges, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, or apples)

Snacks (1 or 2 items)
1. Trail Mix
2. Peanut Butter and Jelly on Whole Wheat
3. Raisins
4. Snack Size Peanut M&M’s (For cheat day only) – Keeping it real!

Lunches
1.  Yogurt with fresh fruit (Cantaloupe, Mango, Banana, or Honeydew)
2.  Salad with tuna or salmon and balsamic dressing

Dinners
1.  Chicken Pot Pie with a side of potatoes, squash, or mixed vegetables (broccoli, string beans, cauliflower, carrots)
2.  Quiche (eggs, spinach, mixed vegetables) with beans and rice

Health Risks Disappeared

Within 18 months, Aviance lost 250 pounds, and a visit to his doctor confirmed that he was no longer at risk for diabetes, elevated cholesterol, or high blood pressure. “I’ve always been a very happy guy who would kid around with anyone, but when I was heavy, I felt like I had to be that way because I thought people were judging me based on my size. But now it’s a happiness that is really shining from the inside out.” To speed along his transformation, he started to incorporate breaks for pushups and other strength moves during his walks. “I do pushups right in the street—the city is my gym,” he says. Today, Aviance is a health and wellness expert touring the country to inspire obese children and adults to start moving. “I want people to be as happy as I am, and part of that is being healthy. The sidewalk is my treadmill. Every morning I walk right outside my door and go. They can do it, too.”

Most hardworking teenagers play sports and complete their homework after school. Justin Beckerman, 18, does all that and builds machines. His latest creation? A fully-submersible, one-man submarine he made with $2,000 worth of materials from the hardware store.

“I actually had a lot of experience building other submarines, [but] I wanted to challenge myself,” said Justin, a life-long inventor from Mendham, N.J.

His goal was to make a sub that could “actually be used by other people and not just me,” he said.

In April, Justin unveiled the “Nautilus,” a 12-foot submarine he says can descend to depths of 30 feet. He’s still working out the kinks but we can attest that his sub works. In the video above, which we shot last Friday at Lake Hopatcong, N.J., Justin dove 10 feet in the “Nautilus” and explored the lake’s murky waters for 10 minutes.

“Successful test!” he exclaimed, after resurfacing, to his father, Ken Beckerman, and younger brother, Russell, 16, both of whom were monitoring from their dock. Nearby were Justin’s mother, Jess, his youngest brother, Cole, 12, and his cousin, Victoria Fuerst, 16.

None were surprised to see him driving a submarine he had made himself.

“A person who is not his brother must think it’s crazy,” Cole, said as his older brother was submerged. “Well, I’m used to it because ever since I was really young he [has been] making things.”

Justin’s first submarine was a small, remote-controlled prototype he operated from dry land. His next goal, accomplished last year, was to make a sub that could actually dive. But that version, essentially corrugated plastic boxes duct-taped together, wasn’t quite ready for the Navy.

“I ended up building one that could go 2 feet and that worked,” he explained, but the seal broke and the vessel flooded. Undeterred, he continued on his path to complete, in his words, “a full-scale, practical submarine.”

It wasn’t until January of this year that Justin drafted the plans that would culminate in the “Nautilus.” The submarine consists of four main parts: a section of drain pipe for the body, a small motor at its stern, two ballast tanks on either side that allow it to dive and surface, and a life support raft that pumps air in and out of the vessel’s Plexiglas cockpit via two hoses.

The “Nautilus” also sports a PA system that allows Justin to communicate to his parents, who said they supervise every excursion from their dock. Together they devised a rescue plan in case of emergency. So far there haven’t been any close calls.

“Justin has always been safe. He’s proved to us that he can handle it,” said Jess, Justin’s mother. “Even his grandfather, who is a bright engineer, would question Justin and then, after awhile, he said, ‘I can’t question Justin anymore.’“

“And that was when [Justin] was 8!” his father added.

Since unveiling the “Nautilus,” Justin has received a steady onslaught of interview requests from media organizations all over the world. A television documentary about him and his other inventions is in the works, said his father. But Justin is thinking about college, not fame.

“I really want to make a difference in the future through engineering and innovating,” Justin wrote in an email when asked what he wants to accomplish next. “I think that I want to go to a great engineering school where I can roll up my sleeves and take what I have learned to the next level.”

Even as fast-food chains tout their healthy offerings, they’re also coming up with fatty new treats to keep customers interested. Case in point: Dunkin’ Donuts is adding a doughnut breakfast sandwich to its national menu this week.

The sandwich, which comes with fried eggs and bacon between a split glazed doughnut, will become a part of the permanent menu starting June 7, which the chain claims is “National Donut Day.” Dunkin’ Donuts had tested the sandwich in select stores in eastern Massachusetts in April, creating considerable buzz online.

Notably, Dunkin’ Donuts says the “Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich” clocks in at 360 calories, which is less than the 390 calories for the turkey sausage sandwich it recently introduced for people looking to eat better.

Dunkin’ Donuts, based in Canton, Mass., is a unit of Dunkin’ Brands Group Inc., which also owns Baskin-Robbins.

The latest concoction may seem to conflict with the push by companies to court customers with better-for-you offerings. For example, options like egg whites and whole grain bread have become common as fast-food chains scramble to attract people in their 20s and 30s, who they say want fresher, wholesome food.

That desire to give menus a healthier glow isn’t just lip service. Earlier this year, a report by the Hudson Institute found that lower-calorie options were a key indicator of growth at restaurant chains between 2006 and 2011.

The chains that expanded such options saw customer traffic rise by 11 percent, while those that didn’t saw traffic fall by 15 percent, according to the public policy research group.

But at the same time, companies know that indulgent new creations can generate excitement and a big sales spike. For example, Taco Bell says its Doritos Locos Tacos were its most successful item ever, helping lift sales at established restaurants by 8 percent last year.

Stan Frankenthaler, executive chef and vice president of product innovation at Dunkin’ Donuts, said the chain’s recent offerings of a breakfast sandwich with turkey sausage and the new doughnut sandwich are in line with its goal of offering as much variety as possible.

Already, he noted that people can customize sandwiches in multiple ways, such as requesting that it be made with a certain type of bagel.

When asked whether a customer will also be able to order a sandwich on any type of doughnut, such as a chocolate cake doughnut, Frankenthaler said, “I’m sure the store will do that for you.”

Almost two decades ago, a doctor named Surendra S. Shastri was put in charge of preventative oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India. One of his biggest jobs: to figure out how to cut the toll from cervical cancer, which kills 200,000 women a year in the developing world but is rare in developed countries.

In the United States, that death toll is just 4,000, the result of the most successful story of early detection preventing cancer death. Unlike most other cancers, cervical cancer starts as a pre-cancerous lesion that accumulates mutations. The Pap smear, a technique invented in the 1920s by George Papanicolau, a Greek pathologist at Cornell University, involves a doctor taking cells from the lining of the cervix and sending them to a lab to be analyzed under a microscope. Annual pap smears mean most cases of cervical cancer that would happen in the U.S. are caught before they become deadly tumors. In India, which has the world’s worst cervical cancer burden, the introduction of annual Pap smears for all women seems impossible.

“We don’t have the kind of laboratories or the kind of trained manpower for having pap smear pap smear has suceeded in the countries where it has because of good quality control and frequency of screening,” Shastri says. He needed something far cheaper. The idea that he and others hit upon was to steal a step from from the procedure that follows a suspicious Pap smear. Doctors pour acetic acid – basically a sterile vinegar solution – onto the cervix and look at it under a magnifier. Cancer and precancer cells have less of the gooey cytoplasm than healthy cervix, and the acetic acid makes them actually turn white after just a minute. The normal cells remain a healthy pink.

Shastri skipped the magnifier and the doctor, and decided to train the same health care workers who give immunizations and other basic preventative measures to apply an acetic acid solution in the field. In 1998, he obtained funding from the National Cancer Institute, one of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, to conduct a fifteen-year clinical trial comparing using the vinegar screen once every two years to not screening in 150,000 women. The results are being presented today here at the annual meeting of the American Society for Clinical Oncology. The vinegar test reduced the rate of cervical cancer death from 16.2 women per 100,000 to 11.1 women per 100,000, a 31% reduction.

“It’s amazing,” says Carol Aghajanian, chief of gynecologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. “Thousands of lives could be saved by this inexpensive technique.”

Shastri and his co-authors estimate that in India alone, the introduction of acetic acid screening could prevent 22,000 cervical cancer deaths annually. If it could be instituted across the developing world, that would save 73,000 lives.

Based on those results, the national government in India and the state government of Maharashtra, the state of which Mumbai is the capital, are instituting screening programs for all women. But translating this procedure from Tata Memorial Hospital ot the rest of India or from India to the rest of the world does pose challenges.

Ted Trimble, the Director of the Center for Global Health at the NCI, notes that the health care workers did more than just use tests. They made innovative use of new technology – using digital cameras to record exams so they could be reviewed later and geomapping of the slums of Mumbai so women could be found – and of super-organized records. More than that, he says, the workers did a great job of making sure women who were screened as potentially having cancer did get to Tata Memorial for their exams. Will other hospitals in other countries be as diligent outside of a controlled clinical trial? It’s impossible to know.

Still, this is a striking example of how a low-tech, low-cost intervention can sometimes take the place of a more high-tech innovation. In 2009, Shastri co-authored a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine showing that a single round of acetic acid screening was about the same as a single pap smear for detecting cervical cancer, but neither were as good as a newer invention, which tests for the viral DNA of the strains of the human papilloma virus that are the main cause of cervical cancer.

But the viral DNA test is expensive. Even in the U.S., it is so costly that it has not replaced Pap smears. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has partnered with Qiagen, the Dutch diagnostics company, to create a cheaper version that might be useful in the developing world. Irma Alfaro-Beitz, a senior director of global health at Qiagen, says that Qiagen worries about introducing the test in countries that lack the equipment and processes to perform it or the ability to make sure women are helped once cervical cancer is found. “It is very important that when we introduce a test into a country that country is ready for the test,” she says.

The Gates Foundation still says that the new test should cost about $5, and that it has received regulatory approval from the European Union and been granted marketing authorization in many emerging markets, including India. But approval from the World Health Organization is still pending, and that will be necessary to allow agencies of the United Nations to procure the test.

Shastri says that even if the test becomes available, he is likely to use it only as a second step after the acetic acid screen. The current cost of screening one woman is about 30 Indian rupees, about half a U.S. dollar. Even if the cost of HPV viral testing can drop to $2, it will still best be used to make sure that cancer is detected in women whose cervixes show white areas after being exposed to acetic acid.

Other methods are also being used to help to reduce the number of cervical cancer deaths, too. Last month, Merck and GlaxoSmithKline dropped the prices of the two vaccines against HPV, Gardasil and Cervarix, to $4.50 and $4.60 per dose for use in the developing world. That’s less than one-twentieth the price in the developed world.

There is also some good news on the treatment front: researchers at the ASCO meeting announced that Roche’s Avastin can extend the life of an average woman with late-stage cervical cancer by four months to 17 months. It is not yet clear what can be done to get Avastin, which costs tens of thousands per year, available to rural women in the developing world.

“Arvind, since you are the only speller left in this round, if you spell this next word correctly you will be the 2013 Scripps Spelling Bee Champion,” head judge Mary Brooks says from the judges table.

Tracing letters on his hand with his finger, Arvind confidently looks up and spells a word meaning a small mass of leavened dough: “k-n-a-i-d-e-l.”

German words have lead Arvind, 13, of Bayside Hills, N.Y., to his spelling-bee demise for the last two years when he placed third at the bee.

“Arvind, you are the champion,” Brooks announced as confetti shot up over his head covering the stage.

This will be the first time since 2008 that a boy has won the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

“The words were extremely hard,” Arvind says. “The German curse has turned into a German blessing.”

It was a stressful three days of computerized spelling and vocabulary quizzes and round after round of spelling on stage. It didn’t make it any easier that ESPN was broadcasting.

Jumpy spellers have to pause for commercial breaks, ignore giant cameras in their faces and listen as anchors made jokes about struggling through the addition of vocabulary quizzes to this year’s bee.

All of the pomp and circumstance did little to calm the nerves of the remaining spellers. The group of “spellebrities,” as they’ve been dubbed by spelling bee staff, started with 281 contenders Tuesday morning. By Thursday’s semifinals, 42 of them remained.

At 8 p.m. Thursday night, in front of their families, friends and the world, 11 finalists took the stage. Arvind walked away the winner. He takes with him a shiny, engraved trophy and the title of “champion.” He also receives $30,000 cash, a $2,500 U.S. savings bond from Merriam-Webster and $2,000 worth of reference works from Encyclopedia Britannica.

The bee, while often intense, isn’t all serious: ESPN taped fake AT&T commercials with the spellers and also did short video bits on some of them. Spellers share a bit about their lives and what is interesting about themselves, aside from being a world-ranked speller.

The champion isn’t allowed to return to spell at the bee. But Arvind already knows how he will fill his time. “I will spend the entire day studying physics,” he says, drawing a laugh from the crowd. “I am retiring on a good note.”

As for the rest of the spellers? Back to studying in hopes of making it to next year’s bee.

Clarence Burke Jr., the lead singer of the Five Stairsteps, a sibling R&B group once regarded as “the first family of soul” for a string of hits that included “O-o-h Child,” died Sunday, a day after he turned 64.

Burke died in Marietta, Ga., where he made his home, said his manager, Joe Marno. The cause was not released.

Formed in 1965 in Chicago, the group originally consisted of four young brothers and a sister who played their own instruments as well as sang. They owed their collective name to their mother, who observed they looked like stair steps when they stood by one another in order of age.

The eldest brother, Clarence, also played guitar, wrote many of the group’s songs, served as a producer and choreographed their dance routines. He penned their first single, the ballad “You Waited Too Long” that rose to No. 6 on Billboard’s R&B charts in 1966 — when he was not quite 17.

Among the group’s other hits were “World of Fantasy,” “Don’t Change Your Love,” “From Us to You” and their biggest, “O-o-h Child,” released in 1970.

It was “a pop-soul classic that rivaled the hits of another sibling gang, the Jackson 5,” according to Rolling Stone magazine, which placed the song at No. 402 on its list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.

The magazine also credits the Five Stairsteps with helping to inspire the formation of the Jackson 5, another group that came out of the Midwest and later assumed the mantle of “first family of soul.”

An inspirational song of comfort and hope, “O-o-h Child,” written by producer-songwriter Stan Vincent, was the group’s only top 10 pop hit.

Born May 25, 1949, in Chicago, Burke was the son of Clarence Burke Sr., a police detective who played backup bass for the Five Stairsteps, and his wife, Betty.

When the group won a local talent contest, their career began to take off.

Looking back on the Stairsteps’ success, Burke said in a 2009 interview: “You couldn’t plan this, we certainly didn’t …. We just liked to sing together as a family and build that harmony.”

Rounding out the original lineup were brothers James, Dennis and Kenneth, and their sister, Alohe. They often toured with another group from Chicago, the Impressions.

In the late 1960s, their 5-year-old brother joined them onstage so they renamed themselves the Five Stairsteps and Cubie in his honor. But when he left after two years, they reverted to their original name. They later dropped the “Five” altogether.

After the group disbanded in the late 1970s, the brothers reformed as the Invisible Man’s Band, whose dance single “All Night Thing” reached No. 9 on Billboard’s R&B charts in 1980.

Within a few years the band broke up, and Burke continued to perform and record as a solo artist.

Besides his parents, Burke is survived by his wife, Crystal; his five children; his five bandmate siblings; two other brothers, Leonard and Martin; and grandchildren.

The Mikan drill is a classic basketball practice taught to players at an early age. Shoot a layup with a right hand on the right side, grab the ball as it drops through the net, move to the left side and shoot a left-handed layup. Back and forth, over and over.

Then do the drill, named after Hall of Fame big man George Mikan, with reverse layups.

And if you want to look at a major reason for Miami forward Chris “Birdman” Andersen’s success during the playoffs, look no further than the most basic of drills.

“I do it until my shoulders burn,” Andersen said. “(Former Denver Nuggets assistant) Adrian Dantley had me doing that a lot when I was with Denver. It really panned out and really helped me out around the basket and made me more efficient.”

Efficiency is one thing. What Andersen has done in the playoff is off the efficiency scale. Andersen has made 35-for-41 shots (85.4%) in the playoffs and is shooting 100% from the field (13-for-13) against the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals.

He is 32-for-35 inside the restricted area in the postseason and hasn’t missed a shot since Game 5 of the conference semifinals against the Chicago Bulls, a streak of 16 baskets. Every shot he has made against the Indiana Pacers has been at the rim.

And Andersen’s Birdman-esque explanation for his stellar shooting: “If you can’t make a shot a foot away from the basket, I shouldn’t be playing this sport. … I just work on it. I can’t explain it. It’s an easy shot. I throw it up and it goes in,” he said.

With the colorful tattoos and sculpted mohawk, “Birdman” is a wild juxtaposition of a modern look and an old-school game and just the right bench player for Miami. The Heat don’t call plays for Andersen. He is the beneficiary of passes from LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and others, as well as his hustle.

“I just do what I do,” Andersen said. “I don’t really think about how many shots I made in a row or how good I am. I just continue to do what I do, and that’s come off the bench and bring defense and bring energy and run the floor and get to my spots. If LeBron calls me up, I’ll come up. If not, I’ll stay in the Bird box.”

In Miami’s 114-96 Game 3 victory, Andersen had nine points and nine rebounds, and in Miami’s 103-102 Game 1 overtime victory, he had 16 points on 7-for-7 shooting — a Heat franchise playoff record for most makes without a miss.

“He’s big-time for our team,” James said. “His athleticism. His motor. He comes out and he gives it all. No matter if it’s eight minutes or 38 minutes, he gives it his all.”

The Heat signed Andersen to consecutive 10-day contracts in late January and locked him in for the rest of the season on Feb. 8. Since Andersen joined the team, the Heat are 49-6.

It’s difficult find a player who has made a bigger impact as an in-season free agent signing than Andersen. New York Knicks forward Kenyon Martin was OK this season, and big man P.J. Brown gave the Boston Celtics solid minutes in the 2008 playoffs.

“We didn’t know how he would fit with our team,” Wade said. “We knew he was going to bring some energy. We knew he was going to bring his effort every night, but we didn’t know how he was going to fit. He came right in and he fit in with this team like he’s been here the whole time, the whole three years. So he’s been big for our success.”

The Nuggets used the amnesty provision on Andersen last season so they could avoid the luxury tax, and the Heat waited for potential off-court issues to resolve before bringing him in.

What was Andersen doing while waiting for a team to call? “I kept in the gym and watched my weight,” he said.

And?

“For the most part, I was hunting hogs and living that country-boy life,” he said.

Spoelstra said he has been enamored with Andersen’s game for a decade and pressed Heat President Pat Riley at various times to acquire him.

“We brought him in 10 years ago, pre-tattoo,” Spoelstra said. “Rarely do we let a player like that leave our gym as a non-drafted free agent. We did and watched him develop and from afar, we were fans. Tried to get him two, three years and weren’t able to, so when the opportunity came available, it was really no-brainer.”

It has been a compelling and remarkable journey for Andersen, who played at Blinn College in Texas, the same school NFL quarterback Cam Newton played at for one season.

Andersen bounced around minor pro leagues in China and the USA before the Nuggets signed him 2001. In 2006, the NBA suspended Andersen, then with New Orleans Hornets, for violating the drug policy. He was re-instated in 2008, re-joined New Orleans and eventually signed with Denver again.

“It is incredible,” Andersen said. “And at the same time, I’m just trying to stay in the moment, keep my focus on what I need to do and what I need to improve on.”

A pilot who has completed the world’s shortest scheduled flight more than 12,000 times is to take to the skies over Orkney for the last time.

Stuart Linklater, 59, will retire after making his final trip on the route between Westray and Papa Westray.

It takes just two minutes – including taxiing – to complete the 1.7 mile flight, which is about the same length as the runway at Edinburgh Airport.

Mr Linklater, a pilot with Loganair, has spent 24 years in the job.

During his time on the inter-isle routes – which also includes flights to Stronsay, Sanday, North Ronaldsay and Eday – the Orkney-based pilot has chalked up more than 1.3 million miles in the single-manned, eight-seater Britten-Norman Islander aircraft used on the service.

Mr Linklater, who will continue working part-time for Loganair operating aircraft out of Glasgow, said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time on the Orkney inter-isle service and have worked with and carried so many interesting people over the 24 years I’ve spent piloting the Islander.

“There’s nothing quite like the experience of taking the Islander up and I will look back fondly on my years spent flying between the islands over the years.

“Flying the Islander in some of the most challenging weather conditions in Scotland means I’ve had my fair share of turbulence over the years, but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

“Although I have other interests I’ll still continue flying, albeit on a part-time basis, on the Glasgow services to Barra, Tiree and Campbeltown.”

Mr Linklater joined Loganair after gaining his private pilot licence in 1982 and his commercial pilot’s licence in 1988, and has worked with the airline for 25 years, 16 of them as part of the company’s then air ambulance service contract.

He has flown enough miles to circumnavigate the globe 50 times.

‘Ambulance missions’

Loganair said he can also lay claim to the record for the number of times he has flown the world’s shortest scheduled flight and holds the record for the time taken to travel between the two islands – 53 seconds.

The pilot, who will turn 60 on Monday, became a grandfather for the first time in December.

His final day of flights will include trips from Kirkwall to Papa Westray and North Ronaldsay. He will also pilot a service from Kirkwall to Westray, then Papa Westray, before returning to Kirkwall.

Loganair president Scott Grier said: “Those of us based at Loganair’s headquarters in Glasgow always had peace of mind knowing that Stuart Linklater was very much in control of the specialist flying operations in Orkney, whether North Isles scheduled services, or the many years of ambulance missions.”

Councillor Steven Heddle, convener of Orkney Islands Council, said: “It’s the end of an era for the North Isles with Stuart’s retirement.

“He has served them fantastically well on countless regular flights, and on ambulance flights in the past, and his skill and relaxed approach always made travelling on the Islanders very enjoyable on all the times I have flown on them.”

Not since June 12, 2004, when Ray Sanchez did it for the then-Tampa Bay Devil Rays, had a player ended a Major League game with a walk-off inside-the-park home run. That is until Angel Pagan delivered the goods Saturday in the San Francisco Giants’ 6-5 win against the Colorado Rockies in 10 innings.

There really are no words, except to say that it’s every bit as thrilling as you would expect a walk-off inside-the-park homer to be.

AN Indian woman who lost her leg after she was thrown from a moving train two years ago has become the first female amputee to climb Everest, expedition organisers say.

Arunima Sinha, 26, from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, reached the peak on Tuesday morning after a slow climb from Everest Base Camp.

“She left high camp at 6pm on Monday evening and arrived at the summit at 10.55am (1510 AEST) on Tuesday,” Ang Tshering Sherpa, founder of Asian Trekking, the company that organised the expedition, told AFP on Wednesday.

Sinha’s guides were concerned about her slow pace until the team reached an 8750-metre junction that climbers pass through on their way to the top of the mountain, Ang Tshering said.

“But once she got to that point, she gained energy and confidence and started moving really quickly,” Ang Tshering said.

Two years ago, the former national-level volleyball player was shoved from a moving train by thieves when she reportedly attempted to fight them off as they tried to stealing her purse.

A passing train crushed her left leg, forcing doctors to amputate below the knee to save her life.

“At that time everyone was worried for me. I then realised I had to do something in my life so that people stop looking at me with pity,” Sinha told Indian TV before leaving for the climb.

The Tata Steel Adventure Foundation, which sponsored Sinha’s climb, contacted Ang Tshering’s Asian Trekking company in 2012 about providing training and guiding for the expedition.

“We knew her story, we knew she recovered well from the amputation because she’s a very active athlete,” Ang Tshering said, adding that the company trained her on Nepal’s Island Peak during the 2012 spring climbing season.

Tom Whittaker, a British mountaineer, became the first person with a disability to summit the peak in 1998 after a car crash almost two decades earlier had forced him to have his foot amputated.

Passion for geography runs deep in Sathwik Karnik’s family.

When he was about 6, his mother began challenging Sathwik and his older brother, Karthik, to her own version of hide-and-seek — using an atlas. The boys would comb through the book, trying to be the first to find a city or landmark.

The games paid off when Karthik, now 15, made the finals of the National Geographic Bee in 2011 and 2012. But it was 12-year-old Sathwik, of Plainville, Mass., who finished the job, calmly answering questions about obscure island chains, bodies of water, global trade and culture to win the 25th annual geography bee Wednesday.

The clinching question? “Because Earth bulges at the equator, the point that is farthest from Earth’s center is the summit of a peak in Ecuador. Name this peak.” Sathwik nailed it: Chimborazo.

Runner-up Conrad Oberhaus, 13, of Lincolnshire, Ill., knew the answer as well, but Sathwik got all five questions right in their one-on-one duel. Earlier, Conrad couldn’t name Baotou as the largest city in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, which is home to one of the world’s largest deposits of rare-earth elements. While Conrad didn’t stumble again, Sathwik never relinquished the lead.

Sathwik and his brother said the victory was a team effort.

“It feels like I just finished something that he wanted to finish, so I sort of in a way completed his unfinished business,” said Sathwik, who stands 4-foot-11 and has the fuzzy outline of a mustache on his upper lip.

Said Karthik: “I’m kind of elated now. What we started so many years ago has finally paid off.”

Sathwik might have made it to the finals earlier if not for Karthik, who beat him twice in the Massachusetts state bee. But the younger brother triumphed at their school bee three years ago when he was in fourth grade and Karthik was in sixth, a moment Karthik described as “kind of a down point in my geography career.”

Is Sathwik smarter?

“In some ways he is, in some ways he isn’t,” Karthik said. “The questions this year that they asked were of his liking, and that’s the chief reason why he won.”

The boys’ mother, Rathma, and her husband, Vishwanath, who both work in the software industry, emigrated from near Mangalore, India, in 2002. Indian-American children have dominated both the National Geographic Bee and the Scripps National Spelling Bee in recent years. Vishwanath said the trend can be attributed to coming from a country of 1.2 billion people.

“That brought us the competitive spirit,” he said. “If we don’t work hard and put forth our best effort, we can’t succeed in this world.”

Ten participants made the finals, culled from a field of 54 state-level winners in Monday’s preliminary round. Sathwik led throughout the final round and was the last contestant to get a question wrong.

Participants earned between 1 and 5 points for each correct answer, with the harder questions worth more points, and the competitors with the lowest scores were eliminated at various points in the competition.

Sathwik won a $25,000 scholarship, a trip to the Galapagos Islands and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. The finals will be televised Thursday night on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD.

Sathwik, an aspiring doctor who also plays chess competitively, said he was nervous at first because he had never been on television before, but he became more comfortable as he rattled off a string of correct answers.

Anthony Weiner, having forgiven himself for the sex-texting scandal that forced him out of Congress, now asks New York City voters to do the same. He has entered the mayor’s race, via an online video posted late last night – an odd time to kick off a campaign, but at least too late for the tabloids to blanket the newsstands this morning with page-one penis jokes.

The video was posted without notice or comment. A reporter at The New York Observer, Jill Colvin, spotted it after midnight, tweeted it, and after some confusion (the campaign’s new Web page was up, then down, then up again), the next leg of the campaign for the Democratic nomination was on. A wide-open race is now even more so — City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has been the front-runner, but Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former Comptroller Bill Thompson have made significant gains in fund-raising and endorsements. Comptroller John Liu; a former City Councilman, Sal Albanese; and a Staten Island pastor, Erick Salgado, are also running. (There are Republicans, too: Joe Lhota, George McDonald and John Catsimatidis.)

“Look, I made some big mistakes, and I know I let a lot of people down,” Mr. Weiner says near the end of his video, before shifting back to why that shouldn’t matter now. (Quick recap: he sent photos of his crotch to strangers — at least six women, but how many women, how many photos and for how long, we don’t really know. When one photo accidentally went out to all of Mr. Weiner’s Twitter followers, he lied about how it happened, eventually came clean, and then resigned.)

The half-life of disgrace seems to be getting shorter. For Mr. Weiner it has been two years, almost to the day, since he quit. For Vito Lopez, who was just forced out of the New York State Assembly for serially groping young women, the period of shamed self-restraint might be, oh, two minutes. (He is threatening to run for City Council.) By comparison, Mark Sanford showed remarkable patience and restraint — he took roughly four years to go from disgraced governor of South Carolina to the United States representative for a deep-red district in that state.

Mr. Weiner has more than $5 million to spend and was last seen at 15 percent in the polls, behind Ms. Quinn but ahead of everybody else. How much of that is from notoriety and how much is sincere interest among voters who want him back on the public payroll? No one knows.

Some voters may be interested in Mr. Weiner’s journey of self-redemption and reinvention, but judging from the video and his recent actions building up to his return, we seem to be in for more of the same. He has dusted off a set of proposals for fixing the city, for saving the middle class, adding affordable housing and jobs, helping small businesses. He stresses his outer-borough roots, though he lives in Manhattan now. He has been working as a consultant and bragging to The Times about how easily he makes money. The new Anthony Weiner looks a lot like the old: full of bluster, full of ideas, full of himself.

We’ll soon see how he conducts his campaign, outside of the controlled confines of a Web video. He was invited to a Democratic candidate’s forum this morning sponsored by Crain’s New York Business, but didn’t show. As of this writing, he had not sent any tweets.

VETERAN sports presenter Sandy Roberts has sparked outrage on Twitter for an Indian impression during Channel 7’s news broadcast.

The newsreader put on an Indian accent and made a joke about eating curry following coverage of the Indian Premier League.

The sledge caused an instant backlash against the newsreader as people flocked to Twitter to label Roberts’ joke as a ”disgrace”.

Timothy tweeted: ”Ahhh no Sandy Roberts that was racist. @y7news”.

Big Rich said: ”Oh Sandy Roberts, you finished tonight’s sports segment with a shocker”.

Others were shocked Roberts’ slur came only moments after a report that sledged Collingwood’s Harry O’Brien for an alleged homophobic slur during an on-ground verbal stoush with Geelong’s Tom Hawkins.

Sally Mackinnon tweeted: ”Disgrace @ArnoldJMothman: @7NewsMelbourne you speculate about Harry O’Brians sledge, but Sandy Roberts then mocks the Indian accent/Culture”.

A Channel Seven spokeswoman declined to comment on the incident.

Federal investigators secretly seized two months of phone records for reporters and editors of The Associated Press in what the news organization said Monday was a “serious interference with A.P.’s constitutional rights to gather and report the news.”

The A.P. said that the Justice Department informed it on Friday that law enforcement officials had obtained the records for more than 20 telephone lines of its offices and journalists, including their home phones and cellphones. It said the records were seized without notice sometime this year.

The organization was not told the reason for the seizure. But the timing and the specific journalistic targets strongly suggested they are related to a continuing government investigation into the leaking of information a year ago about the Central Intelligence Agency’s disruption of a Yemen-based terrorist plot to bomb an airliner.

The disclosures began with an Associated Press article on May 7, 2012, breaking the news of the foiled plot; the organization had held off publishing it for several days at the White House’s request because the intelligence operations were still unfolding.

In an angry letter to Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. on Monday, Gary Pruitt, the president and chief executive of The A.P., called the seizure, a “massive and unprecedented intrusion” into its news gathering activities.

“There can be no possible justification for such an overbroad collection of the telephone communications of The Associated Press and its reporters,” he wrote. “These records potentially reveal communications with confidential sources across all of the news gathering activities undertaken by The A.P. during a two-month period, provide a road map to A.P.’s news gathering operations, and disclose information about A.P.’s activities and operations that the government has no conceivable right to know.”

The development represents the latest collision of news organizations and federal investigators over government efforts to prevent the disclosure of national security information, and it comes against a backdrop of an aggressive policy by the Obama administration to rein in leaks. Under President Obama, six current and former government officials have been indicted in leak-related cases so far, twice the number brought under all previous administrations combined.

Justice Department regulations call for subpoenas for journalists’ phone records to be undertaken as a last resort and narrowly focused, subject to the attorney general’s personal signoff. Under normal circumstances, the regulations call for notice and negotiations, giving the news organization a chance to challenge the subpoena in court.

The Justice Department referred questions about the subpoena to a spokesman for Ronald C. Machen Jr., the United States attorney for the District of Columbia, who was assigned by Mr. Holder last June to lead one of two major leak investigations. Those inquiries came amid a Congressional uproar over several disclosures of national security information in the media.

“We must notify the media organization in advance unless doing so would pose a substantial threat to the integrity of the investigation,” Mr. Machen’s spokesman, William Miller, said.

“Because we value the freedom of the press,” Mr. Miller added, “we are always careful and deliberative in seeking to strike the right balance between the public interest in the free flow of information and the public interest in the fair and effective administration of our criminal laws.”

But First Amendment experts and free press advocates portrayed the move as shocking in its breadth.

The Newspaper Association of America issued a statement saying: “Today we learned of the Justice Department’s  unprecedented wholesale seizure of confidential telephone records from the Associated Press. These actions shock the American conscience and violate the critical freedom of the press protected by the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.”

A spokeswoman for Dow Jones, which owns The Wall Street Journal, said the company was concerned about the “broader implications” of the action.

Jay Carney, a White House spokesman, said the White House was not involved in the subpoena. “Other than press reports, we have no knowledge of any attempt by the Justice Department to seek phone records of the A.P.,” he said, adding “we are not involved in decisions made in connection with criminal investigations.”

The Justice Department did not respond to a question about whether a similar step was taken in the other major government leak investigation Mr. Holder announced last June. It is believed to be focused on a New York Times reporter, David E. Sanger, and his disclosures in articles and in a book about a joint American-Israeli effort to sabotage Iranian nuclear centrifuges with the so-called Stuxnet virus.

David McCraw, a lawyer for The New York Times, said, “We’ve had no contact from the government of any sort.”

Mr. Holder announced the two special leak investigations in June amid calls in Congress for a crackdown on leaks after a spate of disclosures about the bomb plot, cyberwarfare against Iran, Mr. Obama’s procedures for putting terrorism suspects on a “kill list,” and the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. The revelations had been published by The New York Times, The A.P. and in several books.

Republicans accused the administration of deliberately leaking classified information, jeopardizing national security in an effort to make Mr. Obama look tough in an election year — a charge the White House rejected. But some Democrats, too, said the leaking of sensitive information had gotten out of control.

Mr. Holder’s move at the time was sharply criticized by Republicans as not going far enough. They wanted him to appoint an outside special counsel, and a Senate resolution calling for a special counsel was co-sponsored by 29 Republican senators.

On Monday, however, after The A.P. disclosed the seizure of the records, some Republican leaders criticized the administration as going too far. Michael Steel, a spokesman for House Speaker John A. Boehner, said: “The First Amendment is first for a reason. If the Obama Administration is going after reporters’ phone records, they better have a damned good explanation.”And Doug Heye, a spokesman for Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, the majority leader, linked the revelation to a brewing controversy over the targeting of Tea Party groups for greater scrutiny by the Internal Revenue Service, saying “these new revelations suggest a pattern of intimidation by the Obama administration.”

The A.P. said Monday that it first learned of the seizure of the records last Friday afternoon when its general counsel, Laura Malone, received a letter from Mr. Machen, the United States attorney. The letter to Mr. Holder said the seizure included “all such records for, among other phone lines, an A.P. general phone number in New York City as well as A.P. bureaus in New York City, Washington, D.C., Hartford, Connecticut, and at the House of Representatives.”

Residents of a private New York City housing development are annoyed that bikini-wearing sunbathers have taken over a play area reserved for kids.

Last weekend, security guards kicked sun-loving college students out of Playground 10 in Peter Cooper Village-Stuyvesant Town after a kids’ soccer league complained. One New York University student in a leopard-print string bikini watched as guards told people to sit up and stop sunbathing.

“This is so ridiculous,” Melissa DeBlasio, 21, told the New York Post. “The sun’s out. It’s summer. People are going to be tanning.”

“There’s just a lot of rules here, and they enforce them randomly,” Marymount Manhattan College student Kaya Gieniusz, 21, agreed. “We pay outrageous money to live here. Let us sunbathe for a few hours.”

The housing complex is made up of 91 buildings on 80 acres on the East side of Manhattan, where one-bedroom units rent for up to $3,555. It has recently started courting college-age tenants, a move that has irked many longtime residents.

“When is a playground not a playground? When it’s being used by our college/university student population for sunbathing,” resident and blogger “Stuy Town Reporter” wrote on May 4. “Playground 10 was almost half taken yesterday with sunbathers, effectively pushing out the kids who wanted access to that playground.”

“This playground should not be used for sunbathing. And neither should the fountain area,” the blogger continues. “We’ve heard that complaints were made, and now it’s time for management to make sure Playground 10 is for playing, not for sunbathing.”

Playground 10 isn’t quite as kid-friendly as the name implies: The artificial-turf covered area in the middle of the apartment complex has no actual playground equipment.

Calls to Stuyvesant Town management were not returned by press time, but the head of the tenants association, Susan Steinberg, told the New York Post that she thinks all two-piece bathing suits should be banned.

“This used to be a very strait-laced community,” she said. “The sunbathing is tasteless, it’s not very classy, and it doesn’t belong in a mixed residential development.”

It’s completely legal for women to walk around topless in New York State — a point proven by Moira Johnson, who strolled around lower Manhattan for weeks last summer wearing an a-line skirt, “Jackie O” sunglasses, a pair of sandals, and nothing else. So, while some residents have called the scantily clad sunbathers “tacky,” “horrible,” and complained about being able to see too much, others point out that the teeny bikinis aren’t really the problem. “I just wish they would move them elsewhere so older children can have a place to play baseball/football/soccer, which is the purpose this playground has historically served,” commented Brooke McAnaney on the housing development’s Facebook page.

“Bikinis, two piece bathing suits, any type of bathing suits, have NOTHING to do with the main issue here, kids see these and more at any beach,” added Edmund John Dunn. “The real issue is adults lying around in a playground that’s designed for kids in active sports.”

Though The Stuyvesant Town Report urged sunbathers to “think of the children!” some moms are just glad that the weather is finally nice enough for kids to play outside again.

“I’m OK with it,” one mom named Joanne told WCBS when asked about the sunbathers in bikinis. “Of all the things that go on in the city, that’s the least of my concerns.”

At 9 a.m. last Friday the writer Franz Lidz drove to the Los Angeles home of Jason Collins with a completed draft of a story on which the two had collaborated two days earlier. When he arrived, Lidz was introduced to Collins’ mother and father; his twin brother, Jarron; and a high school classmate. They, along with Jason, would have final approval. As the group gathered around the kitchen table, Lidz’s daughter Daisy offered a suggestion: Why not have Jason read the story aloud? And so he began:

I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay. …

Shortly after 8 on Easter morning, Lidz, a senior writer at Sports Illustrated from 1988 to 2007, phoned me at my home. Representatives of an active NBA player, whom they did not identify, had told Lidz that their client was considering sharing, publicly, that he was gay. While no male athlete in the U.S. playing a professional team sport had ever come out, this was not entirely surprising news. The previous week CBSSports.com had reported that efforts were afoot to pave the path for closeted NFL players to go public. Former Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo gave further voice to that possibility during the first week of April, when he said that as many as four players were in discussions about coming out as a group. On April 6, Lidz called again. The player had agreed to speak to SI on Wednesday, April 24, in Los Angeles, a week after the end of the NBA regular season.

The player’s identity remained unknown to Lidz until the agreed-upon date. He, and we, knew there was a very real, understandable possibility that the player could change his mind. Lidz and SI executive editor Jon Wertheim arrived in L.A. on the night of April 23. At noon the next day, they were directed to meet with Collins at his home. For four hours Collins shared his story with remarkable clarity, directness, emotion and humor (keyword: Shaq). There was a deeply moving note of graciousness too. To the pioneers before him, such as the tennis champion Martina Navratilova and the retired NBA journeyman John Amaechi, and to such straight advocates of gay rights as Ayanbadejo and Vikings punter Chris Kluwe, he told Lidz, “The words thank you aren’t enough.”

There will be dialogue, plenty of it, in the coming days and weeks and months, about Collins’ story as a watershed moment. And it is. At 69, tennis great Billie Jean King says, “This has been one of my prayers.” There are many others who have and will have something to add — Collins’ speed-dial friends Bill Clinton and Condoleezza Rice, to name two. None will speak more powerfully, not this week, at least, than Jason Collins. His message, though, is not that of the bearer of a battle flag. It is far simpler. His words on the cover say it all.

“… PRO BASKETBALL is a family. And pretty much every family I know has a brother, sister or cousin who’s gay. In the brotherhood of the NBA, I just happen to be the one who’s out.”

After Collins, having choked up a half-dozen times, read those last words of his story, the kitchen was quiet for a beat. His mother broke the silence. “One thing I disagree with,” she said. “Your aunt Teri is a superior court judge in San Francisco.” There was laughter at the nitpick, then the happy silence of the very proud.

With news that Russell Westbrook will undergo knee surgery after tearing the meniscus in his right knee, Patrick Beverley has given his thoughts on the play that led to the injury. Beverley said his steal attempt was a play that “a lot of people do” and that he “just tried to make a play on the ball,” reports Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle.

Beverley has averaged 13.5 points, eight rebounds, and five assists through two games in the series. Beverley went on to say it was an “unfortunate situation” that Westbrook was injured on the play and called Westbrook a top-3 point guard, Feigen reports.

The Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder play Game 3 on Saturday, but the Thunder will be without Westbrook for an undetermined amount of time.

Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti wouldn’t speculate on a timetable for Westbrook, while teammate Kevin Durant said he doesn’t believe Westbrook should rush back from the injury to make sure he can return healthy.

Beverley’s decision to attempt a steal on an unsuspecting Westbrook may have just been a player trying to make a routine play on the ball, but the outcome could have severe consequences for Oklahoma City.

The Bulls and Nets staged an exhausting game Saturday. And that was just for the United Center fans who witnessed this instant classic.

In the end, the Bulls gutted it out in triple overtime. They emerged with a 142-134 comeback victory to earn a 3-1 edge in the best-of-seven series.

Game 5 will be at 6 p.m. Monday in Brooklyn.

“Huge win; huge win,” Joakim Noah said.

With players fouling out left and right in the third overtime, the Bulls got a key bucket from Nazr Mohammed. He connected in the lane after taking a feed from Kirk Hinrich with 32.6 seconds to play.

Mohammed came up huge again with 19 seconds to play, putting back a Carlos Boozer missed free throw for a 140-134 lead.

Mohammed was in for Noah, who fouled out after playing 39 minutes. Nate Robinson and Taj Gibson also fouled out for the Bulls.

The Bulls stormed back from a 109-95 deficit with 3:45 to play in regulation. It was all thanks to Robinson, who scored 12 consecutive points with an array of jumpers, free throws and an acrobatic layup.

Then Robinson (34 points) hit an unfathomable running bank shot with 2.1 seconds to play just in front of the 3-point line in overtime. But the Nets’ Joe Johnson sent it to double overtime with a floater just before the buzzer.

Brook Lopez rejected Noah near the rim to send it to triple OT – just the seventh such game (three overtimes or more) in NBA playoff history. The Bulls have now been involved in three, including 1993 vs. Phoenix and 2009 vs. Boston.

The Nets led 109-95 after a Gerald Wallace slam, and C.J. Watson could have made it a 16-point game. But the former Bulls guard got greedy, missing a wide-open, two-handed dunk.

Appropriate for Day 3 of the NFL draft, the game featured some big hits. Wallace went down hard on a Noah screen, and then Wallace exacted revenge – at the same spot on the court – with a pick on Robinson, who hit the deck.

In the second quarter, Robinson and Watson got technicals after getting tangled up at the scorer’s table. Robinson, who has not been shy about his dislike for Watson, drove him into the padded area after fouling him.

To put Aaron Rodgers‘ pay day in perspective, the Green Bay Packers quarterback will make an epic $40 million this season. That’s more than the entire payroll of the Houston Astros. The Green Bay Packers quarterback is flush with cash, but he hasn’t forgotten his humble origins.

When Rodgers spoke with NFL Network shortly after signing his five-year, $110 million extension on Friday, Rich Eisen asked the star passer to reflect on his harrowing draft-day stay in the green room eight years ago.

“If you had gone up to that young man, in that green room — you — in 2005, and told him, ‘Don’t worry, you’re going to have the most lucrative contract extension in the history of the National Football League. Keep your head up.’ What would you have said to that person?”

“‘Yeah, right,'” Rodgers joked. “It’s funny to me to look back, eight years ago, I was in that green room, wondering if there was a team that wanted to take a chance on me. Green Bay did, I got to sit behind a legend for three years and learn the game. Then I got an opportunity, and seven games into my first year as a starter I was given a contract extension by the Packers, and feel like we’ve accomplished some great things in the last five years.”

Rodgers went out of his way Thursday night to lift up West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, who endured a long wait of his own before the New York Jets came calling. “Hang in there Geno,” Rodgers tweeted, before citing former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue’s words to Rodgers back in 2005: “Good things come to those who wait.”

For Rodgers, at least, those words were prophetic.

The most recent incarnation of the “Scary Movie” franchise offers Tisdale a chance for fans to see her differently than she appeared in the “High School Musical” series of Disney Channel films, playing Sharpay Evans, popular teen drama queen.

For “SMV,” Tisdale, 27, found herself around the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen. (She’s “great,” by the way, and he’s “super cool and very professional” — and didn’t try to hit on her, in case you wondered.)

“There were so many cameos, and that’s what I love about these movies. They’d write a scene, then look for cameos, and they’d just pop in and do it. It was, like, Whoa, Mike Tyson‘s here, and that wasn’t even planned!”

Not that she’s traded away her old “HSM” fans completely. How could she, really, given how eager some of them are?

“Once I Instagrammed a picture of me waking up,” she told the mag, “and the next day this older gentleman came to my parents’ house saying he wasn’t going to leave till he saw me. I was like, maybe I shouldn’t have taken a picture of me in bed?”

However, if you are the kind of guy she’s interested in — maybe a surfer blond frat boy, maybe a dark mysterious fellow with an edge — she might make the first move. Just don’t expect her to do all the dirty work.

“I’m definitely old-school when it comes to dating. I’m not into the ‘game’ so much. If I like you, I’ll confront you and be open about it.

“Then I expect you to come after me.”

With pictures like the ones in Maxim, who could resist?

The issue with Tisdale on the cover is on stands now. “Scary Movie V” opens in theaters Friday.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored one goal and set up the other as he inspired Paris St-Germain against former club Barcelona in a thrilling Champions League quarter-final first leg match.

The Swede stabbed home from an apparently offside position to cancel out Lionel Messi’s well-made opener.

Xavi’s 89th-minute penalty after Salvatore Sirigu fouled Alexis Sanchez seemed to have secured Barca’s win.

But Ibrahimovic’s 94th-minute knock-down was swept home by Blaise Matuidi.

It was a disappointing end for Barcelona, who had lost Messi to a hamstring strain at half-time and Javier Mascherano to another injury in the second half.

Those injuries combined with Ibrahimovic’s performance against a team where he had an unhappy 2009-10 season may have dominated the post-match discussion, but it was the inclusion of 37-year-old David Beckham in PSG’s starting line-up that caught the eye before kick-off.

The selection of the former England captain, ahead of the 20-year-old Marco Verratti, looked questionable as Barcelona monopolised possession in an ominous opening, but Beckham went on to have a solid 70 minutes in a deep-lying midfield role.

Despite their early dominance, Barca looked vulnerable at the back and almost conceded from PSG’s first attack as a flustered Sergio Busquets poked the ball against the frame of his own goal.

The home side’s game plan initially confounded Barca with Beckham and the industrious Matuidi sitting deep and launching swift counter-attacks towards a dangerous front quartet of Ibrahimovic, the impressive Lucas Moura, and Argentine pair Ezequiel Lavezzi and Javier Pastore.

Barcelona were limited to wayward long-range efforts from Andres Iniesta and Alexis Sanchez, before a moment of brilliance converted their time on the ball to a score on the board.

Despite Messi’s neat finish for his 57th goal of the season, Dani Alves’s delicious pass, off the outside of his right foot, to slice open the defence stole the show.

Messi escaped the attentions of the excellent Thiago Silva once more to curl narrowly over but it was to be his final contribution as he hobbled out of the action with a right hamstring strain that will be assessed over the next 24 hours.

Former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas came on in place of Messi, but without the Argentine’s attacking menace on the pitch Matuidi was able to push forward.

Ibrahimovic almost scooped the ball cleverly into the path of the PSG midfielder, who will miss the return leg after picking up a booking, but Gerard Pique was quick enough to make up the ground.

Sanchez had wasted two openings for Barca before Ibrahimovic, coming from an offside position, poked in after Thiago Silva’s header hit the post.

With a minute of normal time left, Xavi coolly converted from 12 yards after Sanchez had been felled by Sirigu’s needless charge from goal.

But Ibrahimovic, whose flick-on had almost played in Kevin Gamiero minutes before, had the final word as he nodded the ball into the path of Matuidi whose shot squirmed past Victor Valdes after going through the legs of Barca substitute Marc Bartra.

Coaches constantly talk about how players are willing to do whatever is asked of them.

Seeing how eager his star player was to meet any standard, Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin made an almost impossible request to Wayne Blackshear.

“I bet you can’t score 50 points in a game,” he said.

After nonchalantly scoring 56 against Chicago Ellison, Blackshear just said, “I told you I could do it.”

“He was like, ‘What else do you want me to do?'” Irvin recalled.

The 6-foot-5 wingman has learned at Louisville that the demands are not headline-worthy but much more challenging. While his scoring numbers are not what many had predicted, he has grown as a defensive player and is on a mission to help the Cardinals to a second consecutive Final Four.

Top-seeded Louisville faces No. 12 seed Oregon in the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16 on Friday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Basketball came relatively easy for the sophomore from Chicago’s West Side in high school.

Not only did he score 56 points in that game, he added 21 rebounds, nine blocked shots and seven steals.

He averaged 32.6 points, 14.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 3.7 steals as a senior to lead Morgan Park to the 3A sectional finals in 2011. Scout.com ranked him No. 16 nationally and third among shooting guards.

“He’s a guy, whatever the coach wants you do, he’ll do,” Irvin said.

Blackshear basically was seeing his dreams come true when he signed to play for Louisville after considering Illinois, Texas and Kentucky.

But he dislocated his left shoulder in a collision at a practice for the McDonald’s All-America game and needed surgery that sidelined him for much of his freshman year. That prompted internal questions about whether he again would dictate games so freely. He also sat out a game this season with a right shoulder sprain.

“It set me back a little last year and a little at the beginning of this year,” Blackshear said. “I’m over it. It’s in the past now. It was a difficult time and it was a big event but everything works out for the best.”

The injury was more grueling and draining than some realize.

“Fans and (media) alike, don’t understand what double shoulder surgery is all about,” coach Rick Pitino said before the Big East tournament. “It just takes time and patience. Even close friends and family members of his didn’t understand it, but they do now. You have to do it the right way or a person will lose his confidence.”

Blackshear averages eight points and 3.3 rebounds per game. But a scoring dip is expected in the transition from high school to college, especially on a team with ballhandlers and shooters like Peyton Siva and Russ Smith.

He has made strides in defense, he said, and he’s content with his development.

“I feel like I’ve improved over the season,” Blackshear said. “I feel comfortable playing a lot more defense and traps in our zone. Everyone is waiting for (me to score more), but it’s not about one person scoring. It’s about surviving and advancing to the next round right now.”

Martin Brodeur scored his third career goal and made 17 saves in his first game in a month, leading the Devils to a 4-1 victory over the host Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. Brodeur had been out since Feb. 21 with a pinched nerve in his upper back and neck. The Devils went 3-8-2 in his absence.

Brodeur got credit for the game’s first goal when Carolina’s Jordan Staal passed the puck to the point from behind the net after a delayed penalty call against the Devils’ Marek Zidlicky. The puck missed the intended target, bounced off the boards near center ice and slid into the net.
