The so-called hotshots were remembered as a rambunctious but respectful bunch: pranksters, sometimes, but dedicated and energetic professionals.

Their boss, Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo, grew apprehensive Sunday as another official told him Prescott’s elite Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew had dug in to escape the wind-driven Yarnell Hill wildfire.

“All he said was, ‘We might have bad news. The entire hotshot crew deployed their shelters,’ ” Fraijo recalled Monday.

The worst was soon confirmed: All but one member of the 20-man crew died after being overrun by the fire, which destroyed 200 buildings in the small town of Yarnell and exceeded 8,000 acres by Monday.

The tragedy reverberated through Prescott and beyond, as portraits of the lost Prescott crew took shape and the town took its first steps toward mourning the dead.

About half a dozen people gathered on the steps of the county courthouse in downtown Prescott on Monday afternoon to pray for the fallen firefighters, for those left injured and homeless by the blaze and for those still fighting the conflagration.

They also prayed for rain.

“What we’d love to see for our firefighters and the town of Yarnell is more rain and lots of it — and preferably less wind,” said the Rev. Scott Mitchell of The Church Next Door. As the people bowed their heads and consulted their Bibles, fire trucks sped by, “Flagstaff Hot Shots” emblazoned on several vehicles.

“That’s the road to Yarnell,” said the Rev. Dave Barreras, 46, leader of the Yavapai Territorial Gospel Rescue Mission.

But Prescott had no more firefighters to send. Its only wildland team was gone.

The hotshot crew victims were all men, most in their 20s.

“It’s a younger man’s game. These people keep themselves in exceptional condition,” said Fraijo, who added, “I never heard them complain…. They always showed a great deal of respect. They always seemed to be playing pranks on each other, and a few on me.”

The deceased were Andrew Ashcraft, 29; Robert Caldwell, 23; Travis Carder, 31; Dustin Deford, 24; Christopher MacKenzie, 30; Eric Marsh, 43; Grant McKee, 21; Sean Misner, 26; Scott Norris, 28; Wade Parker, 22; John Percin, 24; Anthony Rose, 23; Jesse Steed, 36; Joe Thurston, 32; Travis Turbyfill, 27; William Warneke, 25; Clayton Whitted, 28; Kevin Woyjeck, 21; and Garret Zuppiger, 27.

At least three hailed from Southern California: Woyjeck from Seal Beach and Warneke and MacKenzie from Hemet.

The identity of the crew member who survived has not been released.

“He’s well; he had been assigned to do a function and he wasn’t with them when they had deployed to shelter,” Fraijo said. “He feels terribly, and we all feel terribly, and we have very few words that express that sort of sorry. When you take a person in your arms and hug ’em, you know, you don’t have to say too much.”

Dennis Godfrey, a spokesman with the federal Bureau of Land Management, said officials had expected that 400 firefighters would be on duty Monday, but only 280 were on the lines by afternoon.

Godfrey said officials were hoping for more but didn’t know when, or whether, they would arrive. “There are fires elsewhere,” Godfrey said. “We only have so many resources to deal with.”

Thunderheads built over Prescott on Monday, delivering thunder, lightning and heavy rain by midday. But by 3:30 p.m., none of the rain had hit the fire area.

The blaze was sparked by a lightning strike Friday, officials said.

In a sprawling gymnasium on a college campus in Prescott, cots were set up and meals were being served for those who fled the raging wildfire. Between 40 and 50 people had registered at the facility, organized by the Red Cross, and more were expected by nightfall, said Michele Maki of the Red Cross.

Shelters had also been organized in Wickenburg and Kingman.

“It’s been a very busy day for the Red Cross,” Maki said. The shelters are meant to serve not only as a place to eat or rest, she said, but also as a place to seek emotional and spiritual help from counselors and chaplains.

“For these people, it’s very personal,” Maki said.

Kathy Bryan of Williamson Valley said the members of the fire crew who perished helped save her home from the Doce blaze after it flared up June 18 in the Granite Mountain Wilderness, northwest of Prescott. That’s roughly 20 miles north of the Yarnell Hill fire.

“These hotshots were on our properties, saving them … saving my house,” Bryan said. “It’s heartbreaking.”

Bryan and her dogs fled her home before the blaze approached. Soon Bryan’s cousin called, letting her know that the wife of one of the hotshots fighting the blaze had offered Bryan a place to stay. That woman is now a widow, Bryan said.

Now Bryan believes it’s her turn to help. “I need to find out what she needs,” Bryan said she told her cousin. “What can I do for her?”

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, U.S. Army Sgt. T.J. Ashcraft said one of the dead firefighters was his younger brother Andrew, who was a good man and a good father to his four children.

“We always kind of pushed each other in good ways,” said Ashcraft, 32. “He went the firefighter route and I went the military route.”

Another dead firefighter, Anthony Rose, was expecting his first child with his fiancee, according to family friend Phyllis Barney of Glendale, Ariz.

Barney’s family met Rose in the small Arizona town of Crown King, southeast of Prescott, when Rose moved there at age 16. In Crown King, Rose earned his GED online and went to work for the local fire department.

“Just getting notifications that an entire crew is killed … is a little difficult to handle when they’re your own and whatnot,” Barney said. “But when you’ve got one that really was kind of your own … it’s even tougher.”

The firefighters’ bodies were taken to the Maricopa County medical examiner’s office in Phoenix on Monday, and it was not clear when they would be returned to Prescott. Officials were still deciding when to hold a formal memorial service.

Some of the cirumstances of the crew’s plight came into slightly sharper focus Monday, although officials cautioned that it could be a couple of days before more preliminary information was available while investigators picked through the disaster area.

Before the flames overtook the firefighters, a thunderstorm cell had moved into their location west of state Highway 89 between Yarnell and Peeples Valley, fire officials said.

The storm created strong and erratic winds in an area described as extremely rocky, with rough terrain and deep canyons. The gusts pushed the flames toward the hotshots, who were trying to create a firebreak in hopes of stopping the flames’ advance, said Wade Ward, a spokesman for the Prescott Fire Department.

As the winds shifted and fire approached, the men were probably trying to get to safety — usually a clearing, Ward said.

“It had to be a perfect storm” for them to have deployed their fire shelters — a last-ditch effort made in desperate situations, he said. Officials lost contact with the crew about 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Obviously wherever they deployed their shelters, they were too close to heavy fuels, so they got overrun,” said Art Morrison, a fire spokesman with the Arizona State Forestry Division.

Ward knew the men, calling them “brothers.” He described the elite team  as “very cautious” and “very conservative.”

Wade Parker, 22, of Chino Valley, about 30 miles north of Prescott, was another of the victims.

Parker’s 14-year-old cousin, Hailey McMains, viewed him as a big brother. “After church, we would find a place to sit and talk about life,” Hailey said. Wade would ask her: “’Anything we need to pray for, Hailey?’ If I was having a bad week, we’d pray about that.”

Hailey said Wade and his high school sweetheart planned to marry in October. They had been together six years, she said.

She was at the home of an aunt and uncle Sunday evening when she heard on the news that some firefighters had died. “I asked my aunt, ‘Is Wade OK?’” Hailey said.

Her aunt put her fingers to her lips and said: “Sssssshhhhhhh,” pointing to one of Wade’s young nephews.

“A little while later, as I was leaving, she whispered, ‘Wade didn’t make it, Hailey,’ ” the girl recalled. “I cried all night long.”

Police have released surveillance video from an Oklahoma Walmart of a man who allegedly took a 2-year-old girl from a mother’s shopping cart and held a knife to the child’s throat.

Surveillance cameras at the Midwest City, Okla., Walmart were rolling June 17 when police shot and killed the suspect, Sammie Wallace, in the head at point-blank range and safely returned the toddler to her mother.

In the dramatic video, Wallace, 37, takes the toddler hostage while her mother, Alicia Keating, had her back to the shopping cart. Keating began to scream and pleaded with the suspect to return her daughter.

Keating’s older daughter was also present as the incident unfolded in front of panicked shoppers.

Law enforcement quickly moved in and evacuated the store. Police began more than 30 minutes of negotiations with Wallace and, at one point, even offered him a chair.

“He had a weapon in his hand. A knife-type weapon holding up against the child, threatening the child’s life,” Midwest City Assistant Police Chief Sid Porter said.

Police say Wallace was uncooperative and the situation quickly deteriorated, with the suspect making odd demands. The tipping point came when Wallace started an ominous 60-second countdown with the knife still close to the toddler’s neck.

“When a subject starts telling you that in 60 seconds he’s going to kill a hostage, that’s going to move you right up to the point that you will shoot him and that’s what occurred in this case,” ABC News consultant and former FBI agent Brad Garrett said.

With the situation growing intense, an officer distracted Wallace as Capt. David Huff moved in and fired a single deadly shot at his head.

“Obviously, our goal was to talk him down to get him to release the child,” Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t successful but we were successful in saving this child and the fact is that Capt. Huff’s actions were extremely heroic and he waited till the very last moment.”

The toddler was uninjured in the incident and returned to her mother, who was waiting for her at the front of the store.

Twenty young, bold, beautiful, eloquent and purpose-driven Ghanaian ladies have been selected as finalists for this year’s Miss Ghana pageant.

All twenty, made it to the finals after going through a successful makeover and photo shoot session held in Accra last weekend.

The session, wholly managed by the FC Skin and Beauty Klinik and Professional Photographer Steven Adusei, saw the ladies uniquely transformed, making the decision a tough one for the team of judges, which included Exclusive Events Ghana CEO Inna Maryam Patty, and Shika Obeng, a director at FC.

Thirty contestants, who had qualified out of a pool that auditioned during the 3-day national auditions in Accra, took part in the day’s makeover and photo shoot session, held at the Krokrobite Beach facility in the Greater Accra Region.

The number was later whittled down to twenty, who have thus qualified as finalists of the 2013 edition.

Hillary is just a laid back, Midwestern girl who loves southern food and isn’t afraid of getting muddy and having a good time! Though growing up with two boys has made her somewhat of a tomboy, she still loves getting her nails done and spending the day at the mall with her girls. In the summer you can find her at Busch Stadium cheering on the Cardinals with an ice cold Bud Light in her hand; she’s proud to be from St. Louis!

Miss Gateway Krysten Moore and Miss Tri-County Nicole Washington are both competing in the Miss New Jersey pageant. They also happen to be best friends.

“I talk to her every day,” Moore said.

The two contestants met at a pageant in 2010 when Moore asked Washington’s opinion on an outfit. The friendship, they said, was almost instant.

Both women said the bonds they have formed help debunk the stereotype that pageant contestants are busy backstabbing and sabotaging each other.

Instead, Washington likens the experience to joining a family.

“That’s one of the best parts, because Miss New Jersey is so small we’re like a sisterhood. We’re really in each other’s corners,” she said.

Moore, 23, a native of Mahwah, recently graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a degree in electrical engineering. She plans to start a job with Raytheon come July.

While she was at school, Washington went to visit, and at other times the pair would routinely text or call throughout the day.

Washington, a graduate of Seton Hall, recalled that when she met Moore she had competed in the pageant once before and had gained some confidence along the way.

“This girl, Krysten, asks me what looks better, and we’ve been close ever since,” she said.

The pair even helped with each other’s talent portion of the competition for this year’s pageant, where the finals will be Saturday night at the Music Pier.

Moore picked Washington’s music for her dance number, “Show Me How You Burlesque,” while Washington and her Aunt Sherri Ryan, director of the Miss Middlesex County pageant, helped choreograph Moore’s tap-dance routine.

“She said, ‘I’m helping you,’ and I was perfectly fine with that,” Moore said of the help Ryan offered.

Ryan and Washington would send Moore, who was still in Massachusetts, video clips of the dance number and Moore would record herself doing the step and then send clips back via iPhone.

Washington knows Moore’s routine so well that she could fill in for her on stage, Moore joked.

And Washington has already decided Moore will be her maid of honor and godmother to her first child when that day comes.

“She’s going to be the godmother to my second child,” Moore added. “My sister gets the first.”

The two take their pageant work seriously, but both know only one of the 23 contestants can win and that shapes their view about the outcome.

“We’re going to the do the best we can. But if we don’t win, what are we going to walk away with?” Washington asked. “Our friendship.”

Fed up: Steph Strayer was so annoyed at the man's boasts that she put his picture online

12:30 EST             8 June 2013

A husband allegedly bragging about cheating on his wife has been publicly shamed on Facebook, after a train passenger overheard his conversation.

The picture of the man, who had been traveling on a train from Philadelphia with friends, has since been shared more than 183,000 times since a Pennsylvania mother posted in on Wednesday.

‘If this is your husband, I have endured a 2 hour train ride from Philadelphia listening to this loser and his friends brag about their multiple affairs and how their wives are too stupid to catch on. Oh please repost…’ Steph Strayer wrote on Wednesday.

Bragger: This picture of a man on a Philadelphia train boasting of affairs was posted on Facebook Bragger: This picture of a man on a Philadelphia train boasting of affairs was posted on Facebook

While it is not known if the husband has been identified, the post has opened up the debate about whether it is right to publicly shame a stranger on social media.

Anna North writes on Salon: ‘It’s now possible to use social media to enforce behavior in public and semi-public spaces in a way it never was before.”‘

She adds that while the post attracted a lot of attention, it is important for people to remember that the man may not be married or be having an affair.

He could easily have just been showing off to his friends.

Earlier this year, a web company fired one of its employees after she took to Twitter to complain about the sexist comments being made by two men sitting near her at a conference.

Not only did Adria Richards lose her job, she was also the subject of a vicious online bullying campaign.

In a statement, her company SendGrid Inc, said that although it supports the need to report inoffensive behavior, publicly shaming the offenders ‘was not the appropriate way to handle the situation’.

According to The Washington Post, a San Jose Mercury News columnist argued: ‘The chain of events illustrates the worst features of the Internet —- the instant rush to judgment, the ugly personal attacks, the urge to punish a perceived wrongdoer.’

Blog sites however, such as Subwaycouture.com provide an outlet to commuters fed up with the inconsiderate actions of fellow passengers.

From sloppy eaters and drunks, to shoppers who feel their bags are more deserving of a seat than another person, the site has become a popular place to shame bad behavior.

It remains to be seen however, if the passenger sharing Ms Strayer’s train carriage will have to face any consequences from his boasts.

PHOTO: Tina Kronkvist, 21, top right, a student at Santa Monica College, ices her knee she injured running from shots fired by a gunman June 7, 2013 in Santa Monica, Calif.

June 7, 2013

Four people were killed in a bullet-riddled rampage across Santa Monica, Calif., that apparently ended with the suspected shooter also dead amid gunfire on a college campus, police said.

The suspect died after a shootout at Santa Monica College, police said, but authorities were investigating approximately nine crime scenes across the city believed tied to the spree. Five to seven of those crime scenes apparently involved gunshots fired, Santa Monica Police Sgt. Richard Lewis told reporters late Friday.

In addition to the dead, at least five people were injured, police said. They included one critically injured person whose life was in jeopardy, a person hospitalized in serious but stable condition and three people sent to hospitals with less serious injuries, Lewis said.

Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks initially said “as many as six” victims, plus the suspected gunman, had been killed in the rampage. But police later lowered the death toll to four dead, plus the suspect. Lewis suggested the initial overcount may have been caused by overlapping witness reports of the same fatalities.

Lewis said the motive for the shootings remained under investigation, but police expected to be able to have more details on the suspect and the circumstances of the crime at a news conference planned for Saturday.

“We don’t know what sparked this incident, if it happened 10 minutes before, if it was spur of the moment, if it was planned out. We don’t know that,” Lewis told reporters late Friday.

Authorities first responded to a report of shots fired at 11:52 a.m. PT and found a house on fire. The found two dead bodies inside, fire officials said.

“While conducting a primary search, we found multiple victims,” Santa Monica Fire Chief Scott Ferguson said, according to ABC News Radio. “It was clear that they were fatalities and, as such, in order to preserve the crime scene, our firefighters mitigated the fire and backed out in order to preserve evidence.”

Police later said the suspect may have had a relationship to the two people found dead in the burning house, but would not specify what the relationship was.

At the same time as the house fire, authorities received reports of a carjacking and multiple shootings now believed related, according to police.

When officials encountered a suspect, he took off towards Santa Monica College.

“There was an exchange of gunfire at that time and the suspect attempted to evade the officer by running off to the college campus,” Seabrooks said.

The suspect made his way towards a library, where he shot at least one woman and then went inside, pursued by law enforcement, police said.

“He continued to shoot at them,” Seabrooks said. “The officers came in and directly engaged the suspect, and he was shot and killed on the scene.”

In 911 calls, the shooter was described as armed with several weapons and possibly a long gun or shotgun.

Seabrooks said the suspect used an AR-15 assault rifle, though Lewis later qualified the description.

“It’s an assault-type rifle,” he said. “I don’t want to go as far as to say it’s an AR-15, but that is the style of rifle it is.”

Elsewhere on the campus, a person of interest was taken into custody, then released when his claim not to be involved checked out, Lewis said.

“He is not a suspect in this case,” Lewis said. “At this time, we believe it is a single gunman and that part of it has been resolved.”

Two female victims were hospitalized at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center — one in critical condition in an intensive care unit and one in fair condition, the hospital said in a news release this evening.

Another victim brought to the hospital died after suffering primarily abdominal injuries, said Dr. Marshall Morgan, UCLA Medical Center’s chief of emergency medicine.

Three other women with relatively minor injuries were treated and released at UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, the hospital said.

The college campus went on lockdown following the shootings as police attempted to secure the scene — which Lewis said police accomplished when they determined the only suspect in the shootings was dead.

“The school is not on lockdown,” he said late Friday. “It is closed, obviously, because there are numerous crime scenes along the campus. The city of Santa Monica is very safe.”

Santa Monica College student Sam Luster was preparing for a presentation in the school’s library when he heard gunfire.

“We didn’t know what was happening until all the students at the entrance of the library started running down towards the bottom of the library,” Luster told ABC News Los Angeles station KABC.

Luster took cover under a desk before moving towards an exit. He said he heard multiple gunshots near the exit.

A SILKY terrier who remained by the side of his dead master in the WA bush for almost five weeks has been found alive and is being cared for by his owner’s friends.

In the ultimate act of loyalty, the dog, called Mitzi, was found alive next to the body of a man police believe is missing Bridgetown bushwalker Wayne Cornelius Coughlan.

Mr Coughlan, 64, was reported missing on May 4 after a friend visited his home and could not find him.

One of his dogs, a Jack Russell named Chester, was found on Peninsular Road, Bridgetown, five days later.

Police said a pig hunter discovered Mr Coughlan’s body last night about 6km north of where he was last seen.

Mitzi has been reunited with Chester and is being cared for by friends.

“All of the circumstances indicate the deceased is the missing man from Bridgetown – Wayne Coughlan, however formal identification will need to be completed – most likely by DNA analysis which may take a number of weeks,” spokeswoman Susan Usher said.

“The body was located approximately 6km north of where Mr Coughlan was last seen.  Mitzi is being cared for by friends and has been reunited with (the Jack Russell) Chester.”

A pig hunter discovered a man’s body on a bush track late yesterday.

Police don’t believe foul play was involved in the man’s death.

A French left-wing activist has died after an attack blamed on skinheads in central Paris.

Clement Meric, an 18-year-old student, was with friends when he was “hit extremely violently” by several men during a fight, officials say.

Several people with links to the far-right have been arrested, according to French media.

French President Francois Hollande said he condemned Wednesday night’s attack “in the strongest terms”.

Mr Meric – a student at Sciences Po, a leading undergraduate school in Paris – was in a busy shopping district near St Lazare train station when three men described as skinheads and a woman confronted his group.

He was struck by a knuckle-duster and his head hit the ground as he fell, police say.

The teenager was placed on life support but was declared brain dead and died on Thursday.

Left-wing parties have called for a demonstration in Paris later on Thursday.

They have blamed the attack on a fringe far-right group, the Revolutionary Nationalist Youths. However it denied any involvement.

The main far-right party, the National Front, described the incident as “appalling”.

Correspondents say it has re-ignited a public debate over the role of small right-wing groups in recent violent protests against gay marriage in France.

A friend of Mr Meric’s, Claire Cosquer, told reporters that his death was murder and had happened in the context of “a very worrying rise of radical far-right movements”.

?Dead ringer? must be my dad
June 06, 2013              10:41AM

HE’S a ‘dead ringer’ which makes Erica Freeman sure that this man is her biological dad.

But all she knows about David McLeod is gleaned from a 1969 newspaper clipping.

“I look exactly like him. We have the same hair and features. You’ve just got to see the picture and you’ll know. It’s just so bloody obvious,” she said.

“I’m 6ft tall, long and thin, just like David. I’ve got the same body, hair and everything.”

Ms Freeman, who was born in Tasmania in May 1969, was adopted at birth.

She met her biological mother when she was 20, after her adoptive parents died, but they no longer speak.

It is believed Mr McLeod, who lived in North Hobart in 1968, met Ms Freeman’s mother through friends.

“It is my understanding that he doesn’t even know I exist. I think (my birth mother) spent a couple of nights with him but just never had the courage to tell him she was pregnant,” she said.

“He left town. Then she saw the article so she cut it out and saved it and gave it to me when I met her.”

The article clipping, from the now defunct The Australasian Post, shows Mr McLeod working as a shop assistant in a trendy Melbourne clothes store called The Gasworks.

The image shows Mr McLeod working at the Lonsdale St boutique with its owner, fashion designer Peter Morton, and then 17-year-old model Bev Stillman.

That’s all the 44-year-old has of her biological dad, who she is desperate to find.

“He’s the one on the left holding the necklaces. I know nothing else at all,” she said.

“He was around 21 at the time. That’s all I have.

“I have a birth certificate but my birth mother had put ‘father unknown’ on it.”

Mr McLeod, whose middle name is unknown, would now be in his 60s.

Ms Freeman, who lives in Fremantle with her two sons, has been unsuccessfully searching for him for years.

“I made my first big attempt when I was pregnant with my first child in 1997,” she said.

“If I find him and he rejects me it will be disappointing, naturally, but I have nothing to lose.

“I just feel that he never had a chance. Not only does he have a daughter he doesn’t know about but he has two grandkids. I could have brothers or sisters but I don’t know.”

Keith Schafferius, a private investigator of 45 years, has been trying to help Ms Freeman track down her dad.

“There are about 87 people of that name in Australia. I’ve phoned some and written to every one of them,” he said.

“There’s a chance I’ve touched base with him and he has chosen not to call back but he wouldn’t have known what it was about.

“I’m not charging Erica anything anymore because really I don’t do this for the money. I just want to see her find him so her boys can get to know their grandfather.”

The publication ban in a case of alleged assisted suicide in Hinton has now been lifted.

The body of 79-year-old Shirley Vann was found inside a car with American plates that was parked outside the Hinton Healthcare Centre on May 10.

Although Vann’s body had no obvious injuries and the autopsy results are not yet complete, the Crown has reported there is some indication she may have been poisoned by carbon monoxide.

Hinton RCMP charged Vann’s daughter, 53-year-old Linda McNall with assisting in her mother’s suicide — an offence that carries a maximum 14 year jail sentence.

At that time charges were laid, a justice of the peace agreed to a temporary publication ban on the names of the alleged victim and the accused, which was lifted on Wednesday.

McNall remains in police custody. She made her first appearance in court on Wednesday via video, but did not speak.

McNall’s lawyer told the court the defendant may have a mental disorder which would mean she cannot be found criminally responsible. She has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment.

While details are still forthcoming, CBC reporter Janice Johnston has learned that McNall and her mother had been living in an apartment in Sierra Vista, Arizona prior to the incident in Hinton — but left town abruptly without paying rent.

They then traveled to Alberta where sources say they spent at least some time living in a tent north of Hinton.

Dr. Henry Morgentaler, seen in here in July 2008, has died at the age of 90.

May 29, 2013             3:59 PM ET

It will come as no surprise to anyone who has followed Canada’s long and bitterly divisive abortion debate that Dr. Henry Morgentaler’s death has produced the same kind of polarized reaction as did his decades fronting the effort to give Canadian women the right to legally end their pregnancies.

To his supporters, he was nothing less than a hero. “Canadian women owe Dr. Morgentaler a tremendous debt of gratitude for standing up for their lives and health at great personal sacrifice and risk,” said Vicki Saporta, president of the National Abortion Federation.

“He survived numerous threats on his life, a clinic bombing and aggressive protests. Yet, he was not deterred,” she said.

Judy Rebick, a former head of the National Action Committee on the Status of Women, worked with Morgentaler in the 1980s on the effort to legalize abortion.

“I think every women in the country has lost a major ally,” she told CBC News. “He changed all of our lives by standing up against the abortion laws and eventually winning in the Supreme Court.”

‘Historic’ struggle

Carolyn Egan, who also worked alongside Morgentaler in the 1980s and was a co-founder of the Ontario Coalition of Abortion Clinics, said his legacy won’t soon be forgotten. “The struggle that he was engaged in between a doctor, the women’s movement, you might say, and the Canadian government, was really historic,” she told CBC News.

But to his opponents, Morgentaler was little more than a murderer who deserved no accolades. And because he was for many years the only abortion doctor who dared to be so publicly defiant about exactly what he was doing, he quickly became the red-hot focus of their anger.

Today, anti-abortion activists pledged to keep up their fight to end abortion in Canada. “This is the end of an era and we hope that our country can now turn a necessary corner and find the courage to restore protection to all human beings, born and pre-born,” said Mary Ellen Douglas, national organizer of Campaign Life Coalition.

“As we wish for both ally and adversary, may God have mercy on [Morgentaler’s] soul.”

Campaign Life Coalition’s national president, Jim Hughes, said he had been praying for Morgentaler daily for more than 20 years. “With that said, Morgentaler has been a highly divisive figure, training abortionists in his methods of killing, doing unbelievable damage to the future of this country and as a result, millions of Canadians have been aborted,” he said.

An anti-abortion group called Students For Life tweeted: “It’s strange to see so many “RIP #Morgentaler” tweets. The man’s life work had nothing to do with peace.”

It wasn’t just opponents who speculated that Morgentaler’s death might lead to a renewed abortion debate. Some supporters voiced the same sentiment.

“Our hope is that he will be memorialized respectfully and that even people who disagree with his beliefs or who disagree with women’s access to abortion will still recognize the work that he did and the sacrifices he made in his own life,” said Julie Lalonde, a board member with the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada.

Efforts to reopen debate

Status of Women Minister Rona Ambrose was caught off-guard by the news of Morgentaler’s death, which broke while she was delivering a speech.

“I wasn’t aware of that but obviously he was a big figure in Canadian history and made a huge impact on the nation,” she said.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper declined to comment on Morgentaler’s death.

In some political circles, the abortion debate never really went away, even though Canada’s highest court handed down its historic ruling that decriminalized abortion way back in 1988.

Some backbench Conservative MPs are currently trying to reopen the abortion debate but are facing significant opposition from Harper, who has told his caucus that he doesn’t want to reopen the issue as long as he’s prime minister.

“I hope he made things right with his maker and, personally I disagreed with what he stood for … regarding the issue of abortion,” said Conservative MP Mark Warawa, one of the backbenchers who have been trying to reopen the debate.

“I don’t think anything is going to change immediately in Canada,” Warawa added. “The government and all the parties have indicated that they do not want to reopen the debate on abortion.”

A pair of New Democrat MPs made reference to that backbench effort today, saying “we must remain vigilant against repeated attempts to roll back this right.”

“Twenty-five years ago, the Supreme Court ruled in his favour, declaring the old abortion law unconstitutional,” said NDP status of women critic Niki Ashton and NDP justice critic Françoise Boivin in a joint statement.

“Unfortunately, even today, access to abortion remains unequal.”

Liberal MP Bob Rae tweeted: “Henry Morgentaler was a remarkable man — courageous, single-minded, and determined to ensure a woman’s right to choose without shame or fear.”

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne said Morgentaler’s contributions were felt far beyond Ontario. “Our country has lost a man of great courage, conviction and personal bravery,” she said in a statement.

“Due in large part to his efforts and advocacy, women in Ontario and across Canada have the right to control their reproductive choices.”

POLICE officers trained for Alpine conditions are being flown into rugged areas of Kosciuszko National Park as a search continues for a missing Canadian man.

Prabhdeep Srawn set out for a bushwalk from Charlotte Pass village on May 13 and hasn’t been heard from since.

The 25-year-old’s rental car was found the same day, abandoned at Charlotte Pass ski village, on the slopes of Mount Kosciuszko.

The search for Mr Srawn resumed on Monday, involving federal, Victorian and NSW police along with officers from the National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS), State Emergency Services and the NSW Ambulance Service.

Officers from the federal, NSW and Victorian police forces, trained for Alpine conditions, were being flown into the more isolated and rugged areas of the park, police said in a statement on Monday.

Mr Srawn is described as being of Indian appearance with a tanned complexion, medium build and short dark hair, last seen wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and possibly a red and black “Frogg Toggs” ski jacket.

Ricky Naputi lived less than half a mile from a gorgeous tropical beach on the island of Guam, but he didn’t see the beautiful coastline for many years.

Naputi, who died Nov. 10, 2012, at the age of 39, weighed 900 pounds at his peak, and the massive weight made it difficult for him to go to the beach — or anywhere — because island transportation cannot support his weight.

“The last time I got out and enjoyed myself must have been years,” Naputi said on“900 Pound Man: The Race Against Time,” a documentary airing May 22 on TLC. “I miss feeling the sun on my face. Miss showering, feeling the water run down my body.”

Things got so bad for him that he was forced to attempt to lose enough weight so that he could fly safely to the U.S. mainland for potentially life-saving surgery.

Naputi was not alone in his struggle. While he spent his days in bed, his wife of 10 years, Cheryl, took care of his every need, including shopping, cooking and giving him sponge baths. She even helped him go to the toilet.

“It’s like taking care of an overgrown baby,” she said on the special.

Naputi was already morbidly obese when he met his wife, but he managed to charm her over the phone so much that she wanted to meet him in the flesh.

“When I went to Ricky’s apartment, he only cracked [the door] open an inch or so,” she said.

She pushed the door open and they were together until his death.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of the story incorrectly implied Naputi was still living. He died Nov. 10, 2012. This version has been changed to refer to him in the past tense.

abc jake davidson upton prom proposal jt 130523 wblog Teens Prom Plea to Kate Upton Lands Him Top Model Date

A Los Angeles teenager who was turned down by one of the world’s hottest models after his YouTube “prom-posal” went viral, has managed to land a first-class backup date when the model that  Sports Illustrated named Rookie of the Year agreed to attend his prom with him.

Jake Davidson’s March 16 video in which he asks white-hot model Kate Upton to attend his prom with him, reached more than 2.5 million viewers.  In the clip, Davidson  is seen lounging on a reclining patio chair, lathering up before a shave, practicing  pushups and shampooing in the shower.

“You’re on the cover of Sports Illustrated. I read Sports Illustrated. …  Kate, great moments are born from great opportunity. And that’s what you have here today. A chance to make a nice guy’s senior year the best ever.”

The high school senior’s plea, showing  no small amount of chutzpah when he coyly asked   if he could call Upton Katie, made it to the 20-year-old  cover model, who  soon tweeted back to Davidson.

“You can call me Katie if you want! How could I turn down that video!  I’ll check my schedule (wink),” she wrote.

Alas, when Upton finally did check her schedule, the “maybe” turned into a definitive “no.” The news even made it into a segment on “Inside Edition.”

Although Davidson didn’t get his dream date, his  prom night won’t be a total loss. He’ll be bringing Danish model Nina Agdal — the  Rookie of the Year  from this year’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

“Inside Edition” went dress shopping with the beauty, who even has her own sexy Carl’s Junior ad, just like Upton.

Tonight Davidson and his date will be turning heads — which is certainly much better than going stag.

A house in a Lincolnshire village has been raided by Met police officers investigating yesterday’s alleged terror attack in Woolwich.

Officers swooped on the detached house as the name of one of the suspects was revealed on internet forums and Twitter as Michael Adebolajo.

He has been identified as the alleged killer seen ranting on video shortly after the murder of the soldier in Woolwich.

It is understood the men, who are being treated in separate hospitals while under arrest, are most likely to be British citizens of Nigerian descent who have converted to a radical form of Islam.

However, they are not thought to have links to terror groups based in Nigeria, such as the jihadist militant organisation Boko Haram.

Police were today seen outside a £365,000 detached house in a Lincolnshire village where they raided a home where Adebolajo is listed as having lived in the past.

There was no answer at the address believed to be that of Adebolajo’s father, named by neighbours as Anthony Adebolajo.

Mr Adebolajo, 56, is believed to be a trained nurse now working in a managerial capacity within the NHS.

The modern property was being monitored by two police patrol cars stationed outside.

Later in the morning, plain clothes officers, thought to be from the Metropolitan Police, arrived at the modern estate and the house and driveway was  sealed off with police tape. An officer at the scene described the property as a ‘crime scene’.

Mr Adebolajo bought the property in 2002. At one time a woman who wore a burka was thought to live with him.

They believed he had up to four grown up children, although few if any are thought to have stayed at the house for any period of time.

Michael Adebolajo was listed as being a resident there in 2004, shortly after the family moved in.

One nearby resident said: ‘I know his family have ties to London, but whoever is at this house is very secretive.

‘The curtains are always drawn at the front and the back, I’ve never seen anybody in the garden, either.’

Neighbours said the house has been home to the same family for about a decade and the blinds at the house were today closed.

A spokesman said: ‘Lincolnshire Police can confirm that the Metropolitan Police executed a search warrant under PACE at an address in Lincolnshire.

‘This is in connection with the ongoing investigation into the murder of a man in Woolwich. The Metropolitan Police are not prepared to discuss the matter further at this stage.’

A man who claims to know Abedolajo from their time at Mulgrave Primary School today described him as ‘a nice man with impeccable character’.

Anjem Choudary, who led Islamist group Al Muhajiroun – the banned forerunner to Islam4UK wher Adebolajo ofen appeared with other radical protesters – said he recognised him from TV footage at the scene.

Choudary said: ‘I went to the same primary school as him in Woolwich, Mulgrave, and grew up in the same area and he came to the local mosque – it was a peaceful community with lots of Muslim people from Somalia and Pakistan. I didn’t know him that well so I can’t say where his family was from.

’He converted around 2003 to Islam, before I met him and I knew him as his convert name ‘Mujaheed’ when he used to attend our demonstrations and lectures. I last saw him in 2011, he was a very nice man with impeccable character and nothing unusual about him.

He added: ‘What he did was unusual and it’s not the kind of view that I propagate and I do not condone the use of violence, but those views are out there. Some members of the Muslim community struggle to express themselves and he is making his voice heard in blood.’

Choudary suggested that it was possible the attack was motivated by British government foreign policy in the Muslim world, and that this may not have been an isolated incident.

He said: ‘We are a very politicised community. Some people are angered by draconian measures such as ‘stop and search’ and restrictions on free speech.

‘There is a chance of more lone wolf attacks happening again due to these draconian measures.

‘If you want to condemn anyone it’s the British government, this is one death but if you add up the number of people killed and tortured by the British government it is in the millions.’

This morning a group of military wives – some pushing prams, laid flowers at the main gates of the barracks to pay their respects to the dead soldier.

One of the women, in her 20s, who did not want to be named, said: ‘We are a group of military wives.

‘We live just outside the base. We are all just very numb at the moment – shaken up and very shocked. It could have been any one of our husbands.

‘He was a young guy who cared very much about his job, like they all do. I think he was in training. The atmopshere is very quiet. No one really wants to talk. No one knows what to say.

‘We are very sad and feeling quite raw at the moment. A lot of our husbands left the country this morning to go to Kenya. I don’t believe he was due to leave.

‘He was an attachment to our batallion I think. He was in training to start off his life as a soldier. It could have been any person on the street but for it to be someone serving, we all feel targeted. It’s not nice.’

After the killing, the man believed to be Adebolajo is alleged to have declared: ‘you and your kids will be next’.

In a chilling rant captured on camera, the knife-wielding man declared: ‘The only reason we have killed this man today is because Muslims are dying daily by British soldiers.

‘AN EYE FOR AN EYE’: FULL RANT OF MAN WITH BLOOD ON HIS HANDS

The man with blood on his hands said ‘you people will never be safe’ as he launched an incredible rant.

In the video footage, obtained by ITV News, he said: ‘We swear by the almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you until you leave us alone.

‘We must fight them as they fight us. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

‘I apologise that women have had to witness this today, but in our land our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don’t care about you.’

‘Do you think David Cameron is going to get caught in the street when we start bussin’ our guns? You think politicians are going to die?

‘No it’s going to be the average guy, like you, and your children.

‘So get rid of them. Tell them to bring our troops back so you can all live in peace.’

The who launched the terrifying diatribe in Woolwich, south-east London, believed to be Adebolajo, who has been identified on Twitter and web forums as one of the arrested men.

He added, in the video obtained by ITV News: ‘Remove your governments – they don’t care about you. You think David Cameron is going to get caught in the street when we start bursting our guns? You think politicians are going to die?

‘No, it’s going to be the average guy, like you, and your children. So get rid of them – tell them to bring our troops back so we can … so you can all live in peace.’

The serviceman was murdered yards from the barracks in Woolwich, south-east London, yesterday.

In broad daylight, an attacker and an accomplice repeatedly stabbed and tried to behead the young serviceman in front of dozens of passers-by.

The attacker, speaking in a clear south London accent, declared in the rant: ‘You people will never be safe. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.’

Throughout the frenzied attack the two killers shouted ‘Allah Akbar’ – Arabic for ‘God is great’ – then demanded horrified witnesses film them as they ranted over the  crumpled body.

How the horror unfolded in Woolwich

The two attackers in their 20s, waited calmly for armed police to arrive before charging at officers brandishing a rusty revolver, knives and meat cleavers.

When the old pistol was shot towards police it backfired and blew the thumb off one of the men.

Moments later they were cut down in a hail of bullets believed to be fired by a woman marksman. Last night both men were being treated in hospital for their wounds.

Before police arrived the man identified as Adebolajo, said: ‘We swear by Almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you. The only reasons we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day.

Yesterday’s slaughter took place 200 yards from The Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich and close to a primary school at 2.20pm.

Witnesses told how the men drove a dark blue Vauxhall Tigra on to the pavement and knocked down the soldier.

Last night the crime scene remained swarming with police and forensic teams who illuminated the road with spotlights as they examined evidence under large tents.

As they worked, more than 100 members of far-right group the English Defence League gathered around the scene, with many draped in St George’s flags and wearing black balaclavas.

Riot police holding shields formed a cordon around the area as the EDL members waved flags and chanted ‘no surrender to the Muslim scum’, ‘Rule Britannia’ and ‘England’.

Leader Tommy Robinson addressed the crowd, saying: ‘We have got weak leadership. They have allowed this to happen. People are scared to say the word Muslim. They are scared to offend them.

‘You know what? We are offended. People in this country are angry. They have had enough.’

They marched threw bottles at police before being dispersed by officers by 11pm.

A number of EDL supporters then headed to the local Queen’s Arms pub where they sang nationalistic songs.

Onlookers said a brick was thrown through a mosque window during the march.

A man, who gave his name only as Abdul, said: ‘I’m not happy about it. It’s a place of worship – a place of God. They have got Islam all wrong. The people who did this are nothing to do with the real Islam.’

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said he was not aware of any arrests at the protest.

Elsewhere, two men were arrested in separate alleged ‘revenge attacks’ on mosques following yesterday’s killing.

A 43-year-old man who reportedly walked into a mosque in Braintree, Essex, with a knife and an ‘incendiary device’ was arrested at 7.15pm on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and attempted arson.

The secretary of the mosque in Braintree, Sikander Saleemy, told Channel 4 News: ‘The police said it’s too early to try and link it to what happened in Woolwich, but those of us who were here feel that it was some sort of revenge attack. It was clear from the man’s behaviour. We absolutely condemn what happened in Woolwich, but it had nothing to do with us.

‘It was an appalling act of terror – but it wasn’t “Islamic” in any way. I wish it wasn’t described like that, because sadly people will now start to blame Muslims.’

And police in Kent arrested a man on suspicion of racially-aggravated criminal damage at a mosque in Gillingham at 8.40pm.

Security chiefs and politicians met this morning to discuss their response to the attack.

Arriving for a meeting of the Government’s Cobra crisis committee, mayor of London Boris Johnson said it was wrong to link the murder with British foreign policy or the actions of Britain’s armed forces overseas.

Mr Johnson said: ‘The fault lies wholly and exclusively in the warped and deluded mindset of the people who did it.’

The mayor also urged Londoners to ‘go about their lives in the normal way’.

Others attending the meeting included Sir John Sawers, head of security service MI6. Security was tight this morning at the army barracks near the scene of yesterday’s killing.

Troops in London were advised in the immediate aftermath of the attack not to wear their uniforms outside their bases.

But at the Cobra meeting this morning it was agreed that issuing orders against wearing military uniforms in public would not be the right response to the outrage.

A No 10 source said last night’s advice was an ‘understandable reaction’ while the circumstances of the attack were still unclear, but Mr Cameron and others at the meeting agreed that ‘the best way to defeat terrorists was to continue with normal life’.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: ‘In light of yesterday’s events and the emerging situation, the military chain of command introduced a package of immediate reactive security measures on a precautionary basis.

‘Following a review of the situation this morning, a decision has been taken to relax some of these temporary measures imposed yesterday, including advice to members of the armed forces in London not to wear uniform outside of defence establishments.

‘The best way we can defeat terrorism is to carry on as normal, and that includes our personnel wearing their uniform.’

Prime Minister David Cameron was briefed by Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe on the murder investigation before chairing the meeting of Cobra at 10 Downing Street.

In a message on Twitter, Mr Cameron described the killing as ‘sickening’.

Meanwhile, a woman who risked her life to confront one of the killers who murdered the soldier in front of horrified passers by described how she tried to calm him moments after the attack.

Ingrid Loyau-Kennett, 48, was on a bus heading through Woolwich when she spotted the stricken soldier lying bloodied in the road.

Her bravery – and that of others who tried to reason with the killers – has been praised, particularly in the wake of amateur footage from the scene, which shows one of the killers making political statements about the slaughter while still brandishing weapons.

Cub leader Ms Loyau-Kennett, of Helston in Cornwall, told ITV Daybreak she initially thought the victim had been injured in a car crash.

She said: ‘I went to the guy and when I approached the body there was a lady cradling him. And then (one of the killers), the most excited one of the two, said ‘Don’t go too close to the body’.

‘I thought, OK. And because I was down I could see a butcher’s knife and an axe – that’s what he had – and blood. I thought, what the heck? I thought obviously he was a bit excited and the thing was just to talk to him.’

Ms Loyau-Kennett said she tried to reason with the killer to focus his attention away from other potential victims, as large crowds began to gather at the scene.

She said: ‘I know it’s big today but for me it was just a regular guy, just a bit upset. He was not on drugs, he was not drunk.

‘He said ‘Don’t touch, I killed him’. I said ‘Why?’ He said ‘He’s a British soldier. He killed people. He killed Muslim people in Muslim countries’.

‘And I said, OK. So what would you like? I tried to make him talk about how he felt. He said all the bombs dropping and blindly killing women, children…

‘More and more people were starting to come. There were so many people around. I just looked around and I found it so daunting.’

Ms Loyau-Kennett said her thoughts were to ‘just carry on’ talking to the man, while several women arriving at the scene tried to shield the victim.

She said: ‘I wanted him to concentrate on me and make sure he doesn’t have a funny idea.

‘He (the killer) told me he was a British soldier – he didn’t look like a British soldier to me, he wasn’t in uniform. But I thought if another one passes by, or is in the area…’

Woolwich and Greenwich MP Nick Raynsford praised the ‘extraordinary’ bravery of members of the public who approached the killers.

The men are in separate London hospitals being treated for injuries after they were shot by police at the scene.

Infatuation: Pastor Jerry Sousley of the Camdenton Bible Baptist Church in Missouri first alerted police to Rector, but for stalking and threatening him

13:16 EST        13 May 2013

A woman brought in for questioning for sexually stalking and propositioning her preacher suddenly, without prompting, admitted to a ruthless 2004 murder.

Clara Rector is now charged in the killing of Tommy Hope of Camdenton, Missouri.

Police were first called about Rector last month when Jerry Sousley alerted them that his parishioner had been sending hem messages ‘regarding inappropriate matters of a sexual nature.’

Basically, the pastor at Camdenton Bible Baptist Church said Rector, 36, was stalking him, reports the Kansas City Star.

Sousley said he found a notebook in which Rector had documented her fantasies with imaginary depictions of their shared sexual activities.

Sousley, who is married, says Rector also made advances, but when he turned her down she only came on stronger. He even says he began finding the notes on his car windshield.

In court documents, Sousley alleges Rector, who is also married, turned on him when he wouldn’t have sex and that she threatened to ‘destroy’ him.

Fearing for his safety and that of his family, Sousley turned to police and Rector was arrested.

But while questioning her in the matter, Rector shocked cops by admitting to the murder of  Tommy Hope.

Hope was found dead in his home in April 2004. Rector was questioned in the case but neither she nor anyone else was ever charged and the file had become a cold case.

Rector told police she’d had an affair with Hope and that she’d gone to his house that day to buy drugs.

When he told her he didn’t have any, she said she freaked out and with a butcher knife in hand ‘jumped on his back and cut his throat.’

‘I was high,’ she told them, ‘and not thinking.’

Before her spontaneous admission, Rector documented her previous highs and lows on a blog called PrayReadLive.

Identifying herself as ‘CJ,’ Rector describes her sad and drug addled past.

However, she writes, ‘NOTHING, was able to fill the God-shaped hole in my heart.’

Despite her professed salvation, Rector is now charged with first degree murder, armed criminal action, and aggravated stalking.

She is joined by husband Jason Rector, who police say aided his wife by disposing of her sexual fantasy notebook at the Hillbilly Fairgrounds in Laurie, Missouri.

Mrs. Spector was denied a bond request. She is expected back in court May 28.

A Florida man allegedly felt the bite of the law when he ran from cops.

Deputies pulled over Bryan Zuniga, 20, from Pinella Park, Fla., for failing to maintain a single lane early Thursday morning, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Zuniga brought the vehicle to a stop and jumped out of the passenger side door, according to the sheriff’s office. He then broke a vinyl fence by kicking a hole into the fence line for him to escape and was able to flee from deputies, the sheriff’s office said.

That afternoon, Pinellas County deputies were notified by the St. Petersburg Police Department of a man at a hospital who had been attacked by an alligator in their jurisdiction, Cristen Rensel, Pinella County Sheriff’s Office public information officer, told ABCNews.com.

When deputies from Pinellas County arrived at the hospital to investigate, Rensel said,  ”We identified him as the one we were looking for.”

Zuniga, 20, was being treated at the hospital for multiple puncture wounds to his face, arm and armpit area, according to the sheriff’s office.  He was able to elude police by hiding near a water treatment plant in unincorporated St. Petersburg when he was attacked by an alligator, he allegedly told deputies.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission opened an investigation into the incident.

“It certainly bit him,” Gary Morse spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission told ABCNews.com. “It could have been defensive bites.  Alligators don’t normally attack people.”

As of now, Morse said the investigation has been closed and the alligator won’t be trapped. “We don’t know what the circumstances were,” Morse said. Investigators were unable to find the alligator, and the owner of the land has not requested its removal.

Zuniga is charged with breaking or injuring fences, fleeing and eluding a police officer, driving with a suspended/revoked and resisting an officer without violence.

He is currently being held at Pinellas County Jail.

Sydney Taylor recently graduated from Acadia University in Wolfville, N.S.

May 8, 2013             11:50 AM AT

A 21-year-old graduate from Nova Scotia’s Acadia University fell from a third-storey balcony and died of a traumatic head injury while vacationing with friends in Cancun earlier this week, police in Mexico say.

They say alcohol was a factor in the death of Sydney Taylor.

Acadia Student Union president Matthew Rios said Taylor was a political science student.

She was among a group of more than 120 students from the university staying at the Hotel Gran Caribe Royal.

The group left May 1. Acadia University said the tour was organized by an independent group.

Rios said some students witnessed the accident and the school is offering them support.

Scott Roberts, a spokesman for the school, said the university was informed Tuesday morning.

Roberts said Taylor was from Nova Scotia but wouldn’t provide any more details about her death.

Graduation ceremonies are Sunday and Monday. The school said there will likely be a tribute to Taylor.

Each letter of the first name rules 9 years of life.  Ages 0 to 27 are ruled by the sum of the first three letters of the name.

Sydney Taylor

19 (S is the 19th letter of the alphabet) + 25 (y is the 25th letter of the alphabet) + 4 (d is the 4th letter of the alphabet) = 48

So the number 48 ruled her first twenty-seven years of life.

48 = Remembrance.

A year after Amanda Berry disappeared in Cleveland, her mother appeared on “The Montel Williams Show” to speak to a psychic about what happened to her daughter.

Psychic Sylvia Browne, who has made a career of televised psychic readings, told Louwanna Miller on a 2004 episode of the show that her daughter was dead, causing Miller to break down in tears on the show’s set.

“She’s not alive, honey,” Browne told Miller on the show, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper. “Your daughter’s not the kind who wouldn’t call.”

Miller told the newspaper that she believed “98 percent” in what Browne told her. Miller died a year later from heart failure.

On Monday, Berry was found alive after she broke free from a home in Cleveland where she says she has been kept for the past decade.

Browne did not return phone calls seeking comment today by ABC News. The Montel Williams show, through syndicator CBS, also did not return calls for comment. The show no longer airs new episodes.

It’s not the first time that Browne, and other psychics, have come under fire for their involvement in law enforcement cases.

In 2003, Browne incorrectly told the parents of missing teen Shawn Hornbeck that their son was dead, and his body could be found somewhere near “two jagged boulders,” according to her premonition.

Nearly four years later, Hornbeck was found alive, and Browne was widely criticized in the media for causing the Hornbecks additional grief.

A website called “Stop Sylvia Browne,” dedicated to cataloguing Browne’s purported failures at prediction, sprang up in 2006.

Last year, Dwayne Baker told ABC News that after his son went missing in 2007, he was flooded with calls from psychics offering potential leads into the whereabouts of Travis Baker.

“It’s very hard,’ Dwayne Baker said. “I went through everything. My son was missing for two years, two months and 12 days. “Psychics called me. I even received a DVD in the mail that a guy claimed he could talk to the dead and this was Travis’ voice, with no return address. I don’t understand why people would want to do that.”

“The psychics…” said Baker, 45, before pausing to let out a long sigh. “I hate to say how many of those called me and said they knew where Travis was. My mother and wife went to one and paid them $100.”

Travis Baker’s remains were located in 2009.

Brad Garret, a former special agent with the FBI and ABC News consultant said that alleged tips from psychics rarely help solve a case.

“As far as finding a victim, finding remains, finding evidence or in any way helping to solve the case, it’s never been my experience,” he said. “So, it’s really a disservice to victims.”

“We’ve never had a psychic lead that turns out to be correct,” said Lt. Dave Parker, of the Anchorage, Alaska, police department, after 18-year-old Samantha Koenig went missing in February, 2012.

Today, Brown faced backlash on social media for her incorrect prediction about Amanda Berry. It is unclear whether she has helped to solve a crime with her psychic predictions.

“Psychics make me sick. Here’s an example: Sylvia Browne told Amanda Berry’s Mum (now dead) her daughter was dead,” wrote Twitter user Chris McBriarty.

“WELL, I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man’s arms. Dead giveaway. Dead giveaway. Deeeaaad giveaway.”

With that incredibly politically incorrect statement, America’s newest hero announced himself to the world.

With his wild hair and twanging drawl, Charles Ramsey is like a character from a gritty American TV show like The Wire. But today, he is being hailed as the saviour who helped bust three women out of a gruesome captivity after they had been missing for a decade, presumed dead.

Little is known about Charles Ramsey, except that he is the neighbour of the man who allegedly kept the women inside his house in the Cleveland.

But his interview with a local local TV station is powerful, raw and not even faintly politically correct.

In the interview, Mr Ramsey says he ate ribs and listened to salsa music with the girls’ captor, unaware he was anything but a regular guy who played with his dogs and worked on his cars and motorcycles in his spare time.
Mr Ramsey’s account of the moment Berry saw fresh air and begged him to call 911, captured in an interview with a local news station, is incredibly compelling and is rapidly going viral.

The interview unfolded amid a large crowd outside the house. Here’s how it panned out.

Reporter: “Walk me through again what happened this afternoon. You heard screaming…”
Ramsey: “I heard screamin. I’m eatin my McDonald’s, I come outside, I see this girl goin’ nuts tryin’ to get out of her house. So I go on the porch, I go on the porch and she says ‘help me get out, I been in here a long time’. So you know, I figured this is a domestic violence dispute, so I opened the door, but we can’t get in that way because how the door is, it’s so much that a body can’t fit through, only your hand. So we kicked the bottom and she comes out with a little girl, and she says ‘call 911. My name is Amanda Berry’.”

Reporter: “And did you know who that was when she said that?”
Ramsey: “When she told me it didn’t register until I got the call to 911. And then, I’m calling to 911 for Amanda Berry? I thought this girl was dead, you know what I mean? And she got on the phone and she said ‘yeah, this is me’ and the detective Cook, Gregory Cook says ‘Charles, you know who you rescued?’ ”

Reporter: “And when did you see Gina?”
Ramsey: “About five minutes after the police got here. See, that girl Amanda told the police ‘I ain’t just the only one, it’s some more girls up in that house. So they goin’ up there, you know, 30 or 40 deep, and when they came out it was just astonishing, cos I thought they would come up with nothing. I figured, I mean, whoever she was, like I say, my neighbour, you got some big testicles to pull this off dude, cos we see this guy every day I mean EVERY DAY.”

Reporter: “How long have you lived here?”
Ramsey: “I been here a year. You see where I’m coming from? I eat barbecue with this dude. We eat ribs and whatnot, and listen to salsa music, you see where I’m coming from?”

Reporter: “And you had no indication that there was anything…”
Ramsey: “Bro, not a clue that that girl was in that house, or anybody was in there against their will, because how he is, is he just comes out to his backyard, he plays with the dogs, tinkers with his cars and motorcycles, goes back in the house. So he’s somebody that you look and you look away because he’s not doin’ nothin’ but the average stuff, you see what I’m saying? Ain’t nothin’ exciting about him. Well, until today. Ha ha ha.”

Reporter: “What was the reaction on the girls’ faces? I can’t imagine, to see the sunlight, to be…”
Ramsey: “Well, I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man’s arms. Something is wroooong here. Dead giveaway. Dead giveaway. Deeeaaad giveaway. Either she homeless, or she got problems, that’s the only why she’s runnin’ to a black man.”

Reporter: “Charles Ramsey, thank you for being there, man. Charles Ramsey, neighbour, heard the screaming, took action, went and did what he needed to do. The rest is unfolding before us here…”

The woman who died in the Toronto marathon has been identified as Emma van Nostrand, 18, of Coxheath, a small community just outside of Sydney, N.S.

May 6, 2013                8:49 AM AT

Grief counsellors were expected to be on hand this morning at a Cape Breton high school after an 18-year-old woman from a small community on the island died while running Sunday’s marathon in Toronto.

Police said the Nova Scotia woman collapsed just a few kilometres from the finish line.

‘It wasn’t like she was alone when she went out there.’—Andrew McKay, race spectator who called 911

Emergency medical personnel told CBC they responded to a call at about 11:08 a.m. near Lakeshore Boulevard and Dowling Avenue, where they found an 18-year-old woman without any vital signs.

Andrew McKay, a spectator, saw the girl collapse just three kilometres from the finish line and tried to help her.

“I was the first one there with a phone, so I called 911 and told them where we were and to get emergency help over here,” he said.

“Whoever was around her stopped when she went down, and stopped to help her out. At first, there were two people trying to find a pulse. So, one was trying on the neck, one was trying on I think it was the left wrist from the way she was laying. And they both couldn’t find anything, and that’s when he said, ‘OK, I’m going to start CPR.'”

Police in Toronto would only say the girl died from a medical condition and that she wasn’t from Ontario.

The Cape Breton Post newspaper in Sydney identified the woman as Emma van Nostrand, 18, of Coxheath, a small community just outside of Sydney. She was a Grade 12 student at Riverview Rural High School in Coxheath.

She was scheduled to graduate from high school next month.

Family of runners

Dr. Chris Millburn, president of the Cape Breton Roadrunners club, knew van Nostrand and her family.

He confirmed that this was her first attempt at running a full marathon.

“It’s absolutely tragic,” he said. “I’ve been an emergency room doctor for 14, 15 years, and I see tragedy as part of my job all the time. This ranks among the worst few things I’ve ever had to see or deal with.

“She’s incredibly nice, humble, [a] successful young lady. She was great in school, she was good at her sports — I know she played soccer and she ran — and she was focused and good at whatever she took on. She’s a real loss for Cape Breton. She was a young person who was definitely going places.”

Millburn stressed that sudden deaths such as these are unusual.

“These type of events are incredibly, incredibly rare,” he said. “What people have to remember is that it’s not particularly to do with the marathon, it’s not that she picked something that was unreasonable, or that this wouldn’t have happened to her otherwise. It’s just a very idiosyncratic, rare thing.

“Some people are born with certain types of electrical abnormalities in their heart which are basically impossible to find, they don’t have any symptoms, and sometimes the first appearance of them is when they suddenly collapse. And unfortunately, a lot of people don’t get a second chance with it.”

It is believed that both her parents, identified by the Cape Breton Post as Steven and Katherine van Nostrand, were at the race. A Katherine van Nostrand from Sydney was registered and completed the full marathon with a time of 4 hours, 14 minutes, 26.5 seconds, according to the race-timing company sportstats.ca.

Emma van Nostrand ran last year’s Scotiabank Blue Nose half marathon in 1 hour, 55 minutes, 40.1 seconds, according to sportstats.ca.

Steven van Nostrand had recently returned from the Boston Marathon, where he had completed the race for the seventh time in a row.

McKay said he wants parents and friends to know that she wasn’t alone when she collapsed.

“She may have gone away for the weekend to go run in a race and didn’t come back,” he said. “But it wasn’t like she was alone when she was out there. She had people with her the whole way, and people who really cared about her who had never met her until she needed them the most.”

Man’s heart stops

A 27-year-old man who is a police officer also collapsed during the race but was saved by a colleague.

Several rushed to the man’s side when his heart stopped, just a half a kilometre from the finish line.

Toronto police Const. Laurie McCann and two others are being credited with saving the 54 Division officer’s life.

“And it wasn’t typical, like somebody has fallen and hurt their knee, you could tell by [the] scream that it was serious,” said McCann.

“So I went running over there and within seconds of me getting there, that doctor showed up. I don’t know where he came from because I was down on the ground with [the man who collapsed]. You know, I’ve been on the job 15 years, he wasn’t breathing, and he didn’t have a pulse.”

The 27-year-old officer was identified only as Andrew.

Following the quick action from McCann and two others, dozens of people took to Twitter calling her a hero.

“I don’t think I’m a hero, not at all, no, because it’s not just me, right? There’s two other people in this scenario and I think I saved a life, I did a good thing, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. But hero? No, that’s kind of hard to digest,” she said.

McCann said she wants to meet the officer she saved and is hoping he’s up for a visit today.

DeSilva

12:33 EST            5 May 2013

The family of a woman who died just days after undergoing a ‘mummy makeover’  have demanded an investigation into her death.

Adriana DeSilva slipped into a coma and died two days after she had a tummy tuck, liposuction and breast augmentation at a cosmetic surgery center.

The mother of two traveled to a Florida clinic with 39 year old Brazilian born DeSilva telling friends the surgery was a joint birthday and mother’s day present to herself.

Adriana DeSilva died just two days after undergoing a tummy tuck, liposuction and breast augmentation

DeSilva’s family have demanded an investigation into her death

Lawyers for the family are considering filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the Boca Raton based clinic and surgeon Dr Daniel M. Zeichner.

‘Florida has become sort of the wild, wild west of cosmetic procedures and if we don’t do something about it, more people are going to continue to lose their lives,’ said Daniel Harwin, the family attorney.

The De Silva family from Harrison,Westchester, New York, have said her death is “suspicious”.

Lawyers are waiting for the autopsy results before filing a lawsuit.

DeSilva, who was training to be a nurse, underwent the multiple procedures at the Boca Raton Surgery Center on April 5th.

Dr Zeicher carried out a tummy tuck, breast augmentation and lipsosuction on her neck.

She was discharged from the clinic with a clean bill of health and checked out by Dr Ziechner.

DeSilva’s family are also considering a wrongful death lawsuit against Dr. Daniel M. Zeichner, the surgeon who operated on her

The following day DeSilva complained of feeling ill and suffered a stroke. She lapsed into a coma and later died.

Her daughter Kerolayne Stuwer said she and her brother are distraught.

‘It’s been hard,’ Stuwer said, fighting back tears.

She said she was devastated that her mother died “when I wasn’t there to hold her hand for the last few seconds.”

Stuwer and her brother were planning to return to Brazil to live with a grandmother.

At the time of the surgery, DeSilva was caring for an elderly Alzheimer’s patient while taking night classes to become a registered nurse, he said.

Family attorney Daniel Harwin Florida has become ‘the wild, wild west of cosmetic procedures’

D Ziechner said he feels horrible for the family, but said in a statement that nothing unusual happened during the procedures.

‘I did not have a problem during surgery,’ Ziechner said.

‘And she was discharged according to the guidelines the center follows, under rules administered by the State of Florida.’

He added that there are problems with cosmetic surgery.

‘She had an unfortunate incident, it can happen. It can happen for anyone,’ said Zeichner.

DeSilva’s death is still being investigated by the Miami medical examiner’s office.

Attorney Andrew Kessler who is also retained by DeSilva’s family as co-counsel, said he has ‘great concerns about the fact that Adriana DeSilva underwent so many procedures at once, and did so at an outpatient surgery center.’

DeSilva had been caring for an elderly Alzheimer’s patient while taking night classes to become a registered nurse

Dr Zeichner is a board certified plastic surgeon and works at the Strax Rejuventation clinic in Boca Raton.

It boasts of being the largest plastic surgery center in the US with 16 surgeons operating on patients.

The clinic says: ‘All procedures are performed by Board Certified Surgeons with impeccable credentials and years of experience. Each surgeon’s credentials are proudly displayed and each patient has the right to consult with several surgeons. Professionalism and patient satisfaction are the hallmark of Strax’s success. The Strax Difference: 16 surgeons allow Strax to match the surgeon with the particular desires of each patient. Often times, a patient having multiple procedures may in face have more than one surgeon performing a different procedure.’

A 5-year-old boy who was playing with a .22-caliber rifle accidentally shot and killed his 2-year-old sister in Cumberland County on Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release from the state police.

The shooting happened just after 1 p.m. at a home on Lawson’s Bottom Road.

The 2-year-old was taken to Cumberland County Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.

Cumberland County Coroner Gary White identified the girl as Caroline Starks.

He said the children’s mother was at home when the shooting occurred, and the gun was a gift the boy received last year.

“It’s a Crickett,” he said. “It’s a little rifle for a kid. …The little boy’s used to shooting the little gun.”

White said the gun was kept in a corner, and the family did not realize a shell had been left in it.

He said the shooting will be ruled accidental.

“Just one of those crazy accidents,” White said.

Investigators in white hazmat suits are searching a landfill for a laptop tied to the accused Boston Marathon bombers, a potential lead that emerged as a result of interviews with two men from Kazakhstan who knew the terror suspects, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Immigration officers arrested the two men, Dias Kadyrbayev, 19, and Azamat Tazhayakov, 20, on Saturday on suspicion that they had violated the terms of their student visas because they were no longer attending classes. They are being detained on the administrative charges at the Suffolk County (Mass.) House of Corrections.

The men lived in an apartment near the campus of University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where accused bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, had been enrolled as a student. Both Tsarnaev brothers were believed to have visited the New Bedford apartment of Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov after the bombing, according to three law enforcement sources, who spoke on the condition they not be named because they were discussing an ongoing investigation. The police sources told ABC News they traced calls and Russian language text messages from one of the bombing suspect’s cell phone to the Kazakhstani men.

It was through the Kazakhstani men that investigators learned of the possible whereabouts of Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s laptop and authorities have been searching the New Bedford landfill for the past three days, the police sources told ABC News. And, the sources said, agents found a cell phone believed to belong to Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s in the New Bedford apartment.

One of the New Bedford men drove a BMW with a vanity plate that read “TERRORISTA #1” on the front, which his father told reporters was an unfortunate joke gift from some friends in Spain.

Azamat’s father, Murat Kadyrbayev told reporters that the two young Kazakhs are simply in Tsarnaev’s social circle, according to a report in the New Bedford-area newspaper South Coast Today. “They knew Tsarnaev and hang around together sometimes,” he said, maintaining they “were questioned only as witnesses.”

Tsarnaev and the two Kazakhstani men posed in a photograph together while on a trip to New York’s Times Square, a photo that has attracted attention since Thursday, when New York officials said they learned that Times Square was allegedly the Tsarnaev’s next target.

New York police say Times Square narrowly missed being attacked by the accused Boston bombers, with the surviving suspect allegedly telling interrogators that he and his brother made a spontaneous decision to continue trying to maim and kill Americans.

“He told the FBI apparently that he and his brother had planned to drive to New York and detonate additional explosives in Times Square,” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at an afternoon City Hall press conference.

But New York was spared, officials say, at the moment the two accused bombers realized the Mercedes they carjacked in Cambridge needed gas.

“The driver used the opportunity to escape and call the police that led to the shootout in Watertown,” said New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Darlington County sheriff’s deputies arrested Hope Hawkins of Hartsville, S.C., on Thursday, a day after her children ages 10 months to 4 years old were found dead from smoke inhalation in a closet in a bedroom after her kitchen caught fire.

She did not arrive at home until firefighters arrived at the scene and put out the fire, investigators said. It took firefighters less than 10 minutes to put out the fire.

Hawkins was first charged with one count of unlawful neglect of a child Thursday. Hours later, Sheriff Wayne Byrd added three more counts of that charge. On Friday, Hawkins was charged with four counts of homicide by child abuse.

Sisters Myasia and Kynasia Hawkins, 10 months; and their brothers, Camaron Mason, 2, and Delonta Dixon, 4, died Wednesday.

042513 mobile home fire

The fire broke out on a street lined with mobile homes near Hartsville, a city of 8,000 people about 60 miles east of the state capital of Columbia.

The fire appears to be accidental, Byrd said. But Hawkins has given conflicting stories on where she was when the fire started.

Dallas Thomas – OL – 6’5″/306

Dallas Thomas is a very versatile offensive lineman that was a three year starter at Tennessee.

During Thomas’ freshmen season he played sparingly on special teams, but started every game at left tackle during his sophomore season.

Thomas continued starting at left tackle during his junior season and performed extremely well. One notable performance came against South Carolina when he held Melvin Ingram and Jadeveon Clowney to just two tackles, no tackles for loss and no sacks.

Before Thomas’ senior season the Louisiana native was moved to guard in order to make room for Antonio “Tiny” Richardson at left tackle. Last season the Volunteers had one of the best offensive lines in the country and Thomas was named a second team All-SEC player, as well as a third team All-American.

Thomas has great strength but will probably be a guard at the next level because he does lack the quickness that you’d expect in an NFL caliber left tackle. Given that Thomas has two years of SEC experience playing at left tackle it does make him a slightly more attractive option in the draft, since he has the versatility to play at tackle in a pinch.

One thing that will affect Thomas’ draft stock is that he tore his labrum at the senior bowl in Mobile, AL. It usually takes 4-5 months to recover from that injury, which could likely cause Thomas to miss a significant part of training camp.

Although Thomas was invited to the NFL combine, he was unable to participate due to the injury. He also missed Tennessee’s pro day in March.

Before the injury several draft analysts projected Thomas to be drafted in the second round, some even thought he could possibly go late in the first round. He’s now projected to fall to at least the third round.

Where do we projected Dallas Thomas to be drafted?

We project that Dallas Thomas will be drafted in the third round, with the 66th overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jaguars are a bit of a wildcard as to what positions they’ll be targeting in the draft. The team has several holes on offense and defense, including major question marks at quarterback and defensive end.

Most likely Jacksonville will address their needs at quarterback and defensive end in the first or second round. The Jaguars have a lot of needs on the offensive line as well and Dallas Thomas would go a long way towards filling those needs.

If Thomas fully recovers from his labrum injury then he will be a fantastic value in the third round, but that’s a big “IF”.

The father of the two Boston bombing suspects says he will travel from Russia to the United States this week to seek “justice and the truth.”

Anzor Tsarnaev told The Associated Press that he has “lots of questions for the police” and he wants “to clear up many things.”

In the interview on Sunday he said only that he planned to go in several days, but the suspects’ mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, told journalists on Monday that the father plans to fly to the U.S. on Wednesday.

She said the family would try to bring the body of their elder son back to Russia.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a gun battle with police. His 19-year-old brother Dzhokhar was later captured alive but badly wounded.

Krystle Campbell is the second identified victim of Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing.

TUESDAY APRIL 16, 2013            2:04 PM

A heartbroken dad whose daughter was killed in the Boston Marathon bombings had to endure a second shockwave of terror: doctors initially confused his daughter’s identity with a friend who survived.

“We had the doctors come out and tell us everything they did (on the survivor) — and it wasn’t our daughter,” said William Campbell Jr. 56.

The tragic turn of events began Monday when Krystle Campbell, 29, of Medford, Mass. was watching the marathon with the friend, Karen Rand, to cheer on Rand’s boyfriend.

The pair were caught in the first blast at 2:20 p.m., and for hours, William Campbell and his wife believed doctors were operating on their daughter’s leg at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Frantic tweets indicate that for hours after the blasts people believed it was Karen who was missing. The Campbells, however, believed their daughter was alive.

So when nurses let the Campbells into an intensive care room at around 2 a.m. to visit their “daughter,” the family was stunned to see the recuperating patient was, in fact, Karen.

“I said, ‘That’s not my daughter, that’s Karen! Where’s my daughter?’ The doctors were as shocked as we were,” Campbell said.

Within an hour a Boston detective arrived and showed them a photo of their daughter — one of three killed in the terror attack.

“I almost passed out on the floor, Campbell recalled Tuesday, moments before leaving for a viewing of his daughter’s body.

The devastated dad said Krystle, a manager at Jimmy’s Steer House, was “a dream.”

“She was the best person you’d ever meet. She helped everybody,” Campbell said. “I don’t who care you were, she was always there.”

His grief mixed with rage.

“I’m very angry. I hope they catch the bastard and fry him,” Campbell said.

“I can’t understand it — someone doing that. People are out there enjoying a beautiful day and then to have this happen.”

“And then the little boy that passed,” he added, alluding to 8-year-old Martin Richard. “It’s totally tragic.”

A teen hit by a softball died this week at a California high school during gym class after he was struck in the chest, reported UPI News this Thursday, April 11, 2013. Taylor Dorman was in the middle of playing a softball game, “Over the Line,” this Wednesday when a softball hit him very hard in the chest.

Under the headline, “Teen hit by softball dies in California”, the source noted that for the 16-year-old boy, this was the case of a tragic accident.

“After being hit Taylor complained of his chest hurting then he collapsed,” said the principal of Ramona High School.

Some of Taylor’s peers said that their friend had continued playing the game for almost 20 minutes, though he did keep saying his chest hurt. Then he suddenly collapsed.

The teen hit by softball dies headline began to trend after Taylor Dorman was immediately taken to a local medical center for treatment. However, he passed away several hours later.

The exact cause of death — including whether or how being hit by the softball contributed to the death — has not been reported yet.

Taylor Dorman’s father, however, was known to have died of a heart attack at a young age. Students and teachers met this Wednesday morning to celebrate his memory, as this Wednesday would have been Taylor’s birthday.

Louisville players including Cortnee Walton (13) celebrate after a national semifinal against California at the Women’s Final Four of the NCAA college basketball tournament, Sunday, April 7, 2013, in New Orleans. Louisville won 64-57.

12:20 A.M.           APRIL 8, 2013

Louisville’s basketball teams have been pulling for each other during both NCAA tournaments, sweating through the nail biters, cheering the wins.

There hasn’t been a loss yet. It sure is a joyous time to be a Cardinal.

The women got a pep talk from men’s coach Rick Pitino after they lost to Notre Dame in the Big East tournament – and they haven’t lost since, beating Cal 64-57 on Sunday night to advance to the school’s second NCAA championship game.

The women’s players gathered at a New Orleans restaurant to watch the men beat Wichita State on Saturday and will be watching again Monday night when the men play Michigan for the title.

“The way I look at it, I think the men are trying to feed off of our success,” women’s coach Jeff Walz said with a smirk before adding on a serious note that he’d received word from Atlanta that the Louisville men “were in the hotel lobby, jumping up and down and cheering for us.”

Pitino texted Walz after their victory “congratulating us and telling me to tell the players what an unbelievable job they did.”

And so they have.

Connecticut women’s coach Geno Auriemma is well aware of what Louisville is going through right now.

Back in 2004, the men’s and women’s teams at UConn were playing for the national title and both came away victorious, the only time one school won both titles in the same season.

Now Louisville can do it again.

“If it were easy, it would have been done a lot of times, but the fact it’s only been done once shows you how difficult it is to do,” said Auriemma after his team routed Notre Dame 83-65 to reach the final. “At the same time, this has been a magical year for Louisville. … It’s just amazing what they’ve been able to do, so I think we’re playing against Louisville and we’re playing against a certain karma, maybe.”

Auriemma’s Huskies were finally able to shake off the Fighting Irish, thanks to an incredible effort by star freshman Breanna Stewart. She scored a career-high 29 points to go with four blocks and was seemingly everywhere.

“Given the stage, and what was at stake, I don’t know that I’ve seen any bigger performance,” said Auriemma. “I know there’s been NCAA tournament games that we’ve had certain individuals play great, but I don’t remember a player having a better game in this environment.”

UConn will be going for its eighth championship Tuesday night, which would match Tennessee for the most in the women’s college game.

April 7, 2013

In the end, it seemed less a victory than an exorcism.

A startling dominance that Notre Dame held over Connecticut crumbled Sunday night. Not even Tennessee at the height of its power could defeat the Huskies with such assured regularity.

After losing to the Fighting Irish in the past two national semifinal rounds,UConn prevailed on Sunday, 83-65, advancing to the N.C.A.A. title game against Louisville on Tuesday. The Huskies defeated the Cardinals, 72-58 during Big East conference play this season.

Notre Dame (35-2) had defeated UConn (34-4) in seven of their last eight meetings, including three times this year. But the Huskies are a more assured team now. Their freshmen, forwards Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck and guard Moriah Jefferson, have relaxed and matured, no longer seeming to be burdened by expectation.

The 6-foot-4 Stewart delivered a career-high 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting against Notre Dame, along with five rebounds and four blocked shots, hitting 3-pointers and runners and critical free throws. Tuck grabbed seven rebounds, and Jefferson did her part with Kelly Faris defensively to keep Skylar Diggins without a field goal in the first half and shooting a frigid 3 for 15 on the night.

After arriving at UConn as the national high school player of the year, Stewart had a brilliant opening to her college career, but then her confidence ebbed. She said she began thinking too much instead of playing freely, failing to score against Baylor, the defending national champion and shooting 1 for 7 in a defeat against Notre Dame.

But Stewart re-emerged in the N.C.A.A. tournament, and was named the most outstanding player in the Bridgeport Regional. Sunday, she played best game of her young career in the most important game of her career.

“She’s gotten stronger mentally, she’s gotten stronger emotionally,” Coach Geno Auriemma said of Stewart. “Stewie really takes things to heart and puts a lot of pressure on herself. When she wasn’t playing well, she wasn’t strong enough mentally and emotionally to put it aside.”

As the regular season ended, though, Stewart seemed to become liberated.

“There was a renewed, almost like, ‘I’m not going to settle for this anymore; I’m not going to allow myself to feel like this anymore,’ ” Auriemma said.

There have been many UConn players who have delivered big performances during the N.C.A.A. tournament, Auriemma noted, but added: “I don’t remember a player having a better game in this environment. Certainly, I’ve never had a freshman have a game like this in this environment.”

While Stewart and UConn advance to the championship game, Diggins will have the bittersweet commemoration of being an all-American, but one who did not win a national title despite three appearances in the Final Four.

Notre Dame shot only 22 for 74 over all on Sunday as if familiarity, nerves and the importance of the moment left the Irish unsettled. Guard Kayla McBride, who scored more than 20 points each of the three previous games this season against UConn, missed 15 of her 20 attempts Sunday. The Irish clanged 22 of their first 25 shots and never seemed comfortable.

“I thought we looked nervous coming out,” Notre Dame Coach Muffet McGraw said. “I don’t know why. We’ve been here before.”

Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, UConn’s leading scorer on the season, who can curiously disappear for long stretches, imposed herself early and late on Sunday to finish with 16 points. UConn finally kept its poise against the Irish and successfully closed out a game after leading in the second half of all seven defeats to the Irish, dating to the 2011 national semifinals.

UConn also received some redemptive guard play from the junior Bria Hartley, who scored a career-high 29 points against Notre Dame as a freshman, but has been erratic and self-doubting much of this season. Sunday, Hartley began the game on the bench and committed six turnovers, but she also provided 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and blistering speed in transition.

On Tuesday, Auriemma will seek his eighth national title, attempting to match the number won by Tennessee’s pioneering former coach Pat Summitt, whose career was cut short after last season by early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Despite its poor shooting Sunday, Notre Dame led by 26-25 late in the first half. But UConn made a 14-3 run to lead, 39-29, at intermission. Hartley hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to start the run, and Stewart contributed a 3-pointer. The Huskies took a lead they would not surrender.

In the second half, Stewart injured her right shoulder while running through a screen, and Notre Dame drew to within 61-55. But Faris grabbed two offensive rebounds and a missed free throw on the same possession, and Stewart returned to the game. Her swooping runner pulled UConn ahead by 64-55. A pair of free throws by Stewart ended the suspense at 68-55 with 4 minutes 8 seconds left.

“We just played so poorly,” McGraw said. “I thought Breanna Stewart was fantastic, unbelievable. It is real impressive to have a freshman have that type of game, to be the best player on the floor for Connecticut. You don’t expect a freshman to rise to the occasion like that. I thought it was a phenomenal performance.”

He only hoped, Auriemma said, that Stewart could summon one more performance at that level in the title game on Tuesday.

Val Crosby has been unable to kiss her husband for a year. A degenerative disease has rotted her teeth down to the gums, and they cannot afford dental care in their isolated pocket of Tennessee.

The 43-year-old holds down two part-time jobs, as a chamber maid at a seasonal bed and breakfast and as a waitress, and her husband, Jonathan, is a self-employed carpenter. Neither has health insurance.

“For the last couple of years, business has been hard, very hard,” Crosby, who lives in Butler, told ABCNews.com.

But last year, she finally reached out for help from Remote Area Medical, or RAM, a pop-up medical clinic that offers free dental, medical and eye exams to those who don’t have available health care.

Now, her story is told in a new documentary that has its world premiere this weekend as an official selection at the 2013 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham, N.C. It will also screen at the International Film Festival Boston and the Nashville Film Festival in April.

In April 2012, directors Jeff Reichert and Farihah Zaman filmed RAM’s operation at the massive NASCAR speedway in Bristol, Tenn., the heart of Appalachia and the birthplace of country music, where medical volunteers served 2,000 Americans in three days.

“People consider themselves lucky to live in this place,” said Reichert. “But one of the other issues underlying their medical problems is not just that they are poor and uninsured, but they are 200 miles from the nearest doctor.”

Rhonda Begley, a lifelong smoker who had never seen a doctor, had a chest X-ray that revealed a suspicious spot on her lung. Glenn Epps is legally blind and hoped to find new technologies to help him regain the eyesight he lost while in an overoxygenated incubator as an infant. Doctors couldn’t help him, but he walked away with a new set of dentures.

Johnny Peters has had all his top teeth removed, but because RAM could not offer prescriptions for painkillers, he had to resort to street drugs to ease his discomfort.

Crosby had no nerves in her teeth, and they shattered easily, a condition she inherited from her mother. She had hoped to have all her teeth pulled and receive dentures. But because of the demand for care that day, she could have only the five teeth with festering abscesses removed.

But Crosby said it was “very, very hard” asking for charity. “Pride is a thing that comes into it,” she said. “We don’t ask people for help. I grew up on a dairy farm, and that’s how we were raised.”

Remote Area Medical was founded by cowboy and pilot Stan Brock — a onetime star of television’s “Wild Kingdom” — who spent 15 years helping indigenous peoples in the Amazon rain forest, but soon discovered there were just as many people in need in the United States.

Today it offers 246 pop-up medical clinics for the nation’s 50 million uninsured.

This is only the second film for Reichert, 34, whose first, “Gerrymandering,” premiered at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival; it was the first for Zaman, 29.

A freelance journalist, Zaman previously worked as acquisitions manager at the independent film distribution company Magnolia Pictures and is in production on a new documentary to be released in 2014.

In 2011, the directors joined Reichert’s aunt, a retired nurse, and volunteered at a RAM clinic in Pikesville, Ky., sitting at the registration table. The numbers were “staggering,” and the “kindness” of volunteers brought them to tears.

With her bright red hair and tattoos, Alexys Becerra admits she has an alternative look.

But the musician believes her goth appearance led to her being attacked outside an east London pub by six girls.

In December, the 38-year-old had been working as a karaoke host on the Isle of Dogs when she stepped outside to take a phone call.

“One of the girls in the pub took offence to me leaving and followed me outside,” she said.

“I was still on the phone and she pointed in my face and said ‘who do you think you are?’ and then she punched me in the face.

‘Stamped on me’

“She knocked me back, grabbed my hair and pulled my face back. Then five more girls came out and they were taking it in turns to punch me like a tag-team.

“I tried to break away and run down the street to escape, but they tackled me to the ground and stamped on me.

Ms Becerra said the attack lasted about 20 minutes and then she called 999.

Alexys Becerra's facial injuriesMs Becerra was punched repeatedly in the face

“There were spectators but not a single person helped me,” she said.

“The police came and took a statement but never called me back to make a report.

“The girls had ripped out my hair from the roots and left me with cracks in my skull.

“I have torn ligaments in my knee and sprains that have yet to heal.

“I believe the attack was all due to my alternative appearance, but this is how I’ve looked since I was 13.

“I don’t know how to be anyone else.”

‘A risk you take’

Still recovering physically and mentally from the attack, Alexys said the Sophie Lancaster Foundation – an anti-hate crime charity set up after the murder of 20-year-old goth Sophie Lancaster in 2007 – had been a huge support.

Greater Manchester Police has now become the first force in the country to record attacks on subcultures such as goths as hate crimes.

“After the attack, I set up a Facebook page asking for witnesses to get in touch,” Ms Becarra said.

“One of the first messages I got was from the foundation. They’ve helped me get help and support for what happened to me, saying ‘we see too many hallmarks of what happened to Sophie’.

“They’ve been so encouraging.”

As a thank you for their help, Alexys and her band Inertia are releasing a single and a music video to raise funds for the foundation.

“It tells the story of what happened to me using the actual CCTV footage from the pub in hope of jogging people’s memories and trying to find justice in all of this and to further bring awareness of these types of hate crimes.

“Sophie cannot have died in vain and authorities around the country should know her, this case and everything she stands for.

“It’s a risk you take, looking like this, but to me it feels good and it feels right.

“Why should I change?”

A former state trooper killed his estranged wife with a shotgun inside a central Pennsylvania supermarket Thursday and then killed himself, days after she filed for divorce and two months after he was accused of beating her, police said.

Mark A. Miscavish, who retired from the state police in 2011 after 15 years, killed Traci Miscavish at around 10 a.m. at the County Market in Philipsburg where she worked, authorities said. Police also spelled her first name Tracie.

He was arrested Jan. 23 after Traci Miscavish, who had recently left him, returned to the home to retrieve some belongings, Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller said.

Traci Miscavish believed her husband had been abusing prescription drugs and when she went to take them away, he wrestled her to the ground, pinned her arms behind her and attempted to bind her with duct tape, said Parks Miller, whose office was prosecuting him.

He pulled out a gun — a police affidavit said he did not point it at her — and threatened to kill her, but a passer-by saw him trying to drag her back into the home and stopped to help, Parks Miller said. He was charged with simple assault, terroristic threats and harassment and spent a week in jail before being bailed out.

Parks Miller said Traci Miscavish lived in fear of her 51-year-old estranged husband and told prosecutors she believed he would harm her further.

“She said, ‘The next time I see him is going to be at the end of a gun,'” Parks Miller told The Associated Press. “We were very concerned when he got out and we’re just devastated now.”

Mark Miscavish’s defense attorney, David Charles Mason, was not available for comment, his office said.

Traci Miscavish filed for divorce within the past week.

Her sister Gina March, speaking to reporters outside the supermarket after the shooting, said the system had failed both her sister and her brother-in-law.

“He wasn’t in his right mind,” March said. “I don’t believe he’s at fault, I believe he needed help. … And nobody was there to help him, not the judge, not the cops, not our system.”

State police planned an afternoon news conference to discuss the case.

Christina Price, who said she works at a liquor store in the same strip mall as the supermarket, told the Centre Daily Times that Traci Miscavish was a cheerful woman and so friendly and happy that “you couldn’t imagine there was stuff going on at home.”

Price told the newspaper she had no idea the woman had a protection order against her husband.

“Would it have stopped this?” she asked. “It’s like, how do you get out alive? When you’ve got kids and grandkids and friends and family, how do you split it and get away?”
