Missing: Albert and Rita Chretien, who went missing in a remote forest in Elko County, Nevada, in late March. Rita has now miraculously been found

11:15 AM on 9th May 2011

Questions are growing over the fate of a man who disappeared into the Nevada
wilderness seven weeks ago after his wife was found alive.

Rita Chretien, 56, managed to cling to life through treacherous conditions by
eating snow and small amounts of trail mix.

She lost up to 30lbs through the 49-day ordeal but astonishingly is said to
be healthy and recovering well in hospital.

Mrs Chretien became stranded in the Nevada forest with her husband, Albert,
59, on their way to Las Vegas from their home in British Columbia, Canada, when
their van got stuck in mud.

After three days, on March 22, he went to go get help, she told police. She
never saw him again.

Today rescue teams have resumed searching for him, scouring canyons and
mountainsides – but his disappearance has left them baffled.

Mrs Chretien said her husband was walking to State Highway 225 in an attempt
to find help. He had a GPS unit with him.

That highway is more than 10 miles away from the area where hunters found the
van on Friday.

The news has forced search crews to consider the possibility that Mr Chretien
was confused and did not walk in the right direction.

‘I’m trying to figure out how the van ended up where it did,’  said Tom
Montoya, U.S. Forest Service district ranger for the area. ‘It doesn’t make
sense.’

‘That area is pretty remote,’ he said, describing it as ‘miles from anything.
It’s kind of canyon lands, a lot of gorges out there’, making it easy to get
lost.

The van was found along the border of the national forest and Bureau of Land
Management land about five miles south of the state line, where Idaho’s high
desert meets Nevada’s snow-capped Independence Mountains.

Rivers and streams with headwaters mostly in the wilderness area drain off
10,000-foot peaks to the north on their way to the Snake River.

Detective James Carpenter said: ‘I don’t know how much snow is up there, but
it’s really wet and heavy.’

Because of the snow and mud, the only way currently to gain access to the
site is from Idaho, he said.

But he added that crews weren’t ready to turn the rescue mission into a
recovery operation.

‘I want to wait to see what they come up with,’ Mr Carpenter said. ‘It’s
pretty nasty up there, and there’s no communication.’

Deputies from Nevada and Idaho’s Owyhee County searched the rugged terrain
along the north border of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, about 15 miles
north-east of the Jarbidge Wilderness Area.

Bad weather prevented them from using aircraft over the weekend.

Mrs Chretien’s son, Raymond, said of his mother’s rescue: ‘We’re stunned. We
haven’t fully digested it. This is a miracle.’

Mrs Chretien wrote a journal to keep her sane during her weeks alone in the
forest but told her son that she doubted she would stay alive past Mothers’ Day,
which was celebrated in the U.S. yesterday.

Once rescued she immediately apologised for the anguish she had caused her
family.

‘She felt extremely bad for us all,’ Raymond told the Portland Oregonian.

Mrs Chretien left the home she shares with her husband in Penticton, British
Columbia, on March 19, and reached Baker City in eastern Oregon that afternoon,
where they were last seen on a store’s surveillance camera.

She told her son that they had gone sightseeing on back roads when their van
got stuck in mud.

‘They got turned around off the main road that they should have been on,’ Dan
Moskaluk, spokesman for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in British Columbia,
said.

He said Mrs Chretien had lost between 20 and 30 lbs from her time in the
forest. She had survived severe weather conditions, which included snow, rain
and sub-zero temperatures.

‘Her family said she lived off water and small amounts of trail mix,’ he
said.

Raymond Chretien said: ‘I don’t believe they were prepared for winter
weather. They don’t go camping.’

The Chretiens, who run a commercial excavation business in Penticton and were
going to Las Vegas for a trade show, were reported missing when they didn’t
return home on March 30.

Elko County sheriff’s detective Sergeant Kevin McKinney said that Mrs
Chretien was found on Friday when hunters spotted the van in a ravine near the
Humboldt National Forest,

‘She sounds like she’s coherent and she’s very hungry,’ Mr McKinney
added.

After news broke of her survival, friends and family rushed to social
networking sites to describe their relief that she had been found alive.

On Facebook, Little John wrote: ‘I hope to hear the news soon that your
husband has been found safe. I’m just blown away by your strength.’

Diane Imfeld added: ‘What great news! I pray that she will be soon reunited
with her beloved husband. Best wishes to the family. I am thrilled for all of
you. God Bless!’

Another delighted friend, Heather Olson-Anderson, wrote: ‘What amazing news!
Happy Mothers’ Day, friends. We hold your dad close in our hearts
too.’
