Nicki Minaj wearing the stud trend

Dec 20 2011         4:10 PM EST

At the beginning of December, Nicki Minaj teased her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, with the zany track “Roman in Moscow.” And early Tuesday morning (December 20), her latest single “Stupid H–” hit the Internet, showcasing her unrestrained, oddball flows and hinting that Minaj might be performing at the 2012 Super Bowl.

The Young Money rapper spits one particular line that teases she may take the stage at halftime: “Put ya cape on, you a super h–/ 2012, I’m at the Super Bowl.” There has been speculation that Nicki and M.I.A. may perform with Madonna at Super Bowl XLVI, since both rappers are featured on her upcoming album.

Super Bowl news aside, Nicki’s second single of the month taps into her multiple personalities and employs her off-the-wall flow. She spits verses in different pitches, slowing down and speeding up her bars and stretching out some syllables like she did on the remix of Big Sean’s single “Dance (A$$).”

The track ends with the declaration “I am the Female Weezy,” and after one listen, it’s easy to understand why. The Young Money rapper handles the song’s chorus herself, repeating the title of the track in her quirky voice. For her final verse, she spits a few lines directed at an unnamed enemy (speculation has already pointed to rival Lil’ Kim) who she says should have befriended her instead.

Nicki’s sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, is scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day 2012.

Nicki Minaj

Behind the Beats: StreetRunner and Sarom

Roman is back, and on her new track, Nicki Minaj‘s alter ego gets into all types of musical mischief. “Roman in Moscow” starts with a maniacal build of piano strikes into a full-on frenzy of thudding drums, spacey synths and crashing symbols.

It’s a track befitting the fictional Roman Zolanski, who was once exiled into boarding school, but has since escaped. Credit veteran beatmakers StreetRunner andSarom for crafting the first peek at the Best New Artist Grammy nominee’s upcomingPink Friday: Roman Reloadedalbum.

It took a couple of tries, but after about eight different versions of track, the production duo, who exist in a larger crew of boards-men called the Network, finally came up with something that perfectly suited Nicki’s mood.

“Once we heard from Nicki’s camp that they were really interested in the track, we had to go back in on it and tailor make it a little more for her,” said StreetRunner, who was nominated for a Grammy this week for his work on Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV. “It took a good eight tries to get it into pocket, but once we got it, we knew it.”

The duo submitted the first version of the beat to Team Minaj in October, and by their estimation, it took about a month for them to tweak the instrumental and for Nicki to record her verses. The song was mixed earlier this week and released Friday (December 2) on iTunes.

Surprisingly, however, StreetRunner and Sarom didn’t hear the final track until Friday’s release. “Keeping music under wraps right now is very important if you want to avoid it getting leaked,” said Street, who saw a number of tracks he thought he had placed on Weezy’s Tha Carter IIIillegally released online, then ultimately left on the cutting-room floor.

Sarom also lost records that could’ve potentially made Wayne’s 2008 gem, but for him, “Roman in Moscow” was well worth the wait. “Of course she’s gonna go in on every single track, but she just came off on some other sh– today,” he told Mixtape Daily. “I can’t even believe it.”

The song definitely isn’t a pop affair. Nicki as Roman leaves behind her cutesy “Super Bass” persona in exchange for something more sinister. She starts off her first verse, “I’m big Willie, no bike gear/ I told you bitches last year, I’m a rap bitch nightmare/ That’s why I call you Buzz Lightyear/ ‘Cause by the time you start buzzin’ bitch, you gonna have white hair.”

By the end of her two-verse lyrical triad, Nicki goes on a humorous rant. “Yeah ain’t no motherf—in’ prayers bitch, ain’t no motherf—in’ hook, ain’t no motherf—in’ third motherf—in’ verse,” her potty mouth spews. “Roman’s back, bitch/ I f—ed up your life last year this time, remember that?”

Street, who started his career as a DJ, said, “That intro to the first few lines that she says, it’s a shut-the-game-down record. Any DJ who’s on radio and just wants to drop bombs, that intro is gonna happen, bomb.”

5 Things to Know About Rapper Nicki Minaj

Monday August 30, 2010 09:30 AM EDT

With Lil Wayne behind bars, someone’s got to keep his Young Money record label relevant. Wayne’s artist, Nicki Minaj, is doing just that.

On the mainstream scene for less than a year, Minaj has already won two BET Awards (for best female hip-hop artist and best new artist) and landed a No. 1 single with “Your Love” on the Billboard rap charts.

But the firecracker, 25, who spent the majority of her upbringing in Queens, N.Y., has a lot more to her than wild hair, a racy wardrobe and a foul mouth. Here are five things to know about Lil Wayne’s protégé, Nicki Minaj.

1. She had a rough upbringing
Her lyrics may be silly and carefree, but growing up was anything but lighthearted for Minaj. “[My dad] drank a lot and did drugs, and would get violent when he did,” she told Details in May. “He set fire to the house, [and] was attempting to kill my mother. She got out before it burned all the way down. I’ve always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind…I thought, ‘If I’m successful, I can change her life.’ “

2. She has a thing for Charlize Theron
When asked about her celebrity crush, Minaj told PEOPLE it would have to be the Monster star. “She’s a bad bitch,” Minaj said about the A-lister, whom she hopes to meet someday. “I think she’s really, really perky.”

3. Lil Kim is not her biggest fan
Girl rappers of a feather don’t necessarily flock together, as in the case of Minaj and Lil’ Kim, who took jabs at Minaj during concerts, saying she’s copying her style and needs “to pay homage” and show some respect. Fellow Young Money artist Drake stood up for his label-mate, saying the comments bothered him and he took them personally. “You don’t have to do that. You don’t have to get onstage and tell people to pay homage,” he said.

4. She loves interacting with fans via Twitter
Boasting a following of more than a million people on the social networking site (A higher number than active Tweeters Spencer Pratt, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba and Cory Monteith), @NickiMinaj is known to chat up her fans and fan groups. “It says a lot that someone took the time to dedicate a page to me,” Minaj told Details about her Twitter fans. “And it’s useful. Anything I do, they post a link to it right away. I don’t need to Google myself.”

5. She Was a fan of The Hills
When a Minaj follower on Twitter asked the rapper if she watches the now-defunct MTV hit series, she responded, “Yes! I was SO mad wen (sic) Justin Bobby cut his hair!” No one was more shocked about Minaj’s taste in TV than the show’s former star Kristin Cavallari. “I was really surprised at first that she even knew who we were,” Cavallari tells PEOPLE. “But I think it’s awesome because I am a big fan of hers as well.”
