Pepper Spray suspect California Wal Mart

November 26, 2011       10:35 am

A woman who says she doused other deal-hunting shoppers with pepper spray at a Porter Ranch Wal-Mart turned herself in to police Friday night and was later released.

About 20 people suffered minor injuries after a woman fired pepper spray into a crowd Thursday night before leaving the store with her purchase of an Xbox game console, authorities said. The injured, including children, complained of minor skin and eye irritation and sore throats.

Police said Friday that they planned to examine surveillance video from the store and check receipts of Xbox purchases made around the time of the incident. The suspect was described as a Latina in her 30s, about 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 140 pounds. She was wearing black pants and a black sweater at the time of the assault.

A woman who fit the description turned herself in to Los Angeles police around 8:30 p.m. Friday. She was released while police continue investigating the incident.

The Frank Haith hiring has always lingered somewhere between questionable and interesting. The former Miami head coach took over for Mike Anderson to lead the Mizzou Tigers basketball program with questionable results from his former institution, and the hiring seemed like a step down from where Missouri has been positioned over the last several years under Anderson. Yet now that the frenzy has stepped up at Miami over the multiple allegations against the university, there’s no doubting the mainstream public opinion of Haith’s hiring.

Not that Haith has been proved guilty, but it’s hard in the court of public opinion to be considered free of wrongdoing when the allegations run so deep as what’s been reported in the initial Yahoo! Sports story. Both the Miami basketball and football programs have been called into question. As the report details, “Shapiro said he violated NCAA rules with the knowledge or direct participation of at least six coaches – Clint Hurtt, Jeff Stoutland and Aubrey Hill on the football staff, and Frank Haith, Jake Morton and Jorge Fernandez on the basketball staff.”

Later on, Haith had to release a statement of denial through Missouri based on one specific allegation that he was directly involved with. “The booster said his role went one step farther with the basketball  program, when he paid $10,000 to help secure the commitment of recruit DeQuan Jones.  Shapiro said the transaction was set up by assistant coach Jake Morton  in 2007 who acted as the conduit for the funds, and was later  acknowledged by head coach Frank Haith in a one-on-one conversation.”

ESPN’s Andy Katz agrees that Haith needs to be vindicated soon if he’s going to survive the entire affair, since colleges don’t want this sort of thing lingering in the air over their team. This is a frustrating development since Haith has a strong core group of players for next season. Yet Katz’s statement rings true when he writes:

“If it’s proven that Haith knew about the payment, then he’s done at  Missouri. It’s simply not survivable — and it wasn’t exactly a popular  hire among Tiger faithful anyway. And depending on what (if anything)  the NCAA finds, Haith could also get a stronger show-cause penalty to go  along with unemployment”

If Haith can prove that he wasn’t involved or complicit in the scandal, here’s hoping he finds proof and comes out with it soon. Otherwise, Missouri is going to find itself caught up in the tsunami that starts in South Florida.

The University of Miami says it is cooperating with an investigation into claims by an imprisoned former booster that he spent millions on gifts, entertainment and travel for Hurricanes athletes.

“We will vigorously pursue the truth, wherever that path may lead, and I have insisted upon complete, honest, and transparent cooperation with the NCAA from our staff and students,” the school’s president, Donna Shalala wrote in an open letter Wednesday.

Shalala said she was “upset, disheartened and saddened” by the allegations leveled by Nevin Shapiro, a onetime Miami businessman now serving a 20-year federal prison term for fraud. Shapiro told Yahoo! Sports that he showered dozens of Miami players with cash and jewelry, paid restaurant and nightclub tabs and supplied prostitutes over an 8-year period — and that several coaches were aware of the activity.

Shapiro was arrested in 2010 on charges of overseeing a Ponzi scheme that prosecutors eventually determined had totaled $930 million. He pleaded guilty to securities fraud and money laundering that September and told Yahoo! that his accusations against Miami were part of his agreement to cooperate with prosecutors.

The NCAA, which regulates college sports, said it has been investigating Shapiro’s claims for five months. NCAA President Mark Emmert said in a written statement that if true, the allegations show the need for “serious and fundamental change” in college sports, especially regarding the conduct of boosters and agents.

The Hurricanes open their football season September 5 against Maryland. Head Coach Al Golden, who was picked to lead the team in December, told reporters before practice Wednesday that he wanted to clear up the matter “as quickly as we can.”

“This is a very complicated issue obviously, because of the source and because of the allegations,” Golden said. “But again, I’m here to get to the bottom of it.”

“It’s really important to understand that we have a lot of guys in that locker room that do things the right way, that come from great families and have made good decisions,” he added.

August 13, 2011    7:00 a.m.

After a tweet by the rapper The Game prompted hundreds of calls to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on Friday night, authorities said the unexpected deluge delayed their ability to respond to numerous emergency calls, including robberies and a missing person.

The tweet to the rapper’s 580,000 followers said that if they wanted an internship with him, they should call a phone number, which turned out to be the number for the sheriff’s Compton station.

Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Parker said the calls lasted for hours and that as soon as sheriff’s deputies and dispatchers hung up, the phones immediately began ringing again. Although they received many hang-ups, several other people inquired about a music internship.

Several legitimate emergency calls were also received during that time, but deputies were delayed responding to calls about a missing person, a spousal abuse incident, two robberies and a stolen vehicle, Parker said.

“We don’t know how many people needed help but couldn’t get through the overwhelmed phone lines,” Parker said.

Authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the matter, which could include charges such as obstructing officers, making harassing phone calls and knowingly and maliciously disrupting communication over a public safety radio frequency.

The Game sent a tweet to The Times saying: “it wasn’t me (shaggy voice).” He suggested that his Twitter account had been hacked by someone else. In another tweet, he said it was an accident: “Yall can track a tweet down but cant solve murders ! Dat was an accident but maybe now yall can actually do yall job !!!! #iSpeak4ThePeople”

Parker asked The Game via Twitter to delete the phone number, but said he did not hear back. The rapper did not respond to requests for comment.

Alex Rodriguez is the subject of a Major League Baseball investigation for his alleged participation in high-stakes underground poker games, the league said Wednesday.

The New York Yankees third baseman is said to have played at least twice — including in one game that involved several high-profile actors, cocaine and hundreds of thousands of dollars at the Beverly Hills mansion of a record executive — according to reports published by multiple sources.

A story published on RadarOnline.com said that Rodriguez “tried to distance himself from the game” when a fight almost broke out.

“We’re talking to people involved in the investigation and we’re taking this very seriously,” an MLB executive told ESPN New York. “Because he had been warned about this before, I would say a possible suspension would be very much in play.”

In 2005 the Yankees and Commissioner Bud Selig warned Rodriguez about gambling in underground poker clubs, saying dealings with people who might also bet on baseball games could result in a lifetime ban from baseball.“We take this very seriously and have been investigating this matter since the initial allegation,” the league said in a statement. “As part of the investigation, the Commissioner’s Office will interview Mr. Rodriguez.”Rodriguez is currently recovering from knee surgery last month and had been expected to be able to rejoin the team in a couple of weeks.from:  http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2011/08/alex-rodriguez-being-investigated-by-mlb-for-high-stakes-gambling.html
