A California man who was unconscious as he plummeted to earth in a terrifying skydiving accident can finally see the crash landing he miraculously survived on footage captured by a GoPro video camera.

After two years of training at the Skydive Monterey Bay School and 29 successful jumps, Gerardo Flores was long beyond any fear at jumping out of a plane.

Then, only seconds into his 30th freefall, he felt a jerk as his chute unexpectedly opened at 13,000 feet.

Surprise: Without warning, Flores’ chute suddenly opens at 13,000 feet

‘It just exploded,’ he said. ‘It just it yanked me to the side. Something went wrong.

‘One hundred things go through your mind. You are never suppose to open above 6,000 feet.’

In the footage, Flores begins talking to the camera, saying he can see the drop zone thousands of feet below and deciding whether to cut his chute loose and rely on the backup.

‘I said wait a minute,’ he said. If I pull right now, what if the reserve doesn’t open?’

All can remember now is looking down on the drop zone before he passed out.

He fell to earth 20 minutes later, still unconscious, miraculously crashing in the drop zone.

Without warning: Suddenly, Flores’ shoot opens at 13,000 feet, jerking him forward

Shaken: Both Flores and his camera are rattled as the winds pull the parachute along

Teachers from the school rushed to his side and called 911.

He was later airlifted the a hospital.

He was unconscious for two weeks, having suffered only broken ribs and a lacerated tongue.

‘The FAA said you are the luckiest man I ever met,’ he said.

An FAA report found a ‘critical’ velcro closing flap on Flores’ equipment was ‘completely worn.’ Suspension lines were broken and the rigging had knots in it. The inspectors noted, ‘these lines should have been replaced prior top allowing this parachute to be placed in service.’

When Flores watched the footage of himself falling, he was overcome with emotion.

Moment of truth: Flores begins speaking to camera, debating whether he should cut his chute loose and rely on the backup

Faulty: An FAA report would later reveal the parachute to have numerous issues, included knotted rigging, broken suspension lines, and a worn ‘critical’ velcro closing flap

Gone: Still thousands of feet from the drop zone, Flores begins to lose consciousness

‘Oh my god, I can hear myself choking,’ he told CBS SF Bay Area. ‘I could have died that day!’

Skydive Monterey Bay declined an interview request but told sent a statement to reporters saying that Flores’ gear was ‘in proper working order’ and that ‘improper use by the jumper’ was the cause of the accident.

Another industry expert found cause for concern after reading the FAA report.

‘My real problem was him wearing a video camera,’ Dr. Craig Stapleton said. ‘It can be a distraction. The United States Parachuting Association recommends at least 100 jumps for a video camera.’

Stapleton has more than 8,000 jumps to his name as a member of the U.S. parachuting team.

‘It is a dangerous sport,’ he said. ‘You’re jumping out of an aircraft in flight. That is part of the thrill that lures people to the sport.’

Stapleton added that statistically 99.99 per cent of the time you will survive a jump.

Miracle: Amazingly, Flores manages to land in the drop zone even as he remains passed out
parachute
Still rolling: Even with Flores passed out, the camera begins recording instructors and paramedics crowding around his body
parachute
Rescue: Paramedics begin readying the unconscious Flores to be airlifted to the hospital

However he also believed the worn-out gear recorded in the FAA report was cause for alarm.

‘it covers that area where the deployment system is situated, so it makes it easier for things to run into that pin, to knock that pin that keeps the container closed,’ he said.

As there is little regulation over parachuting the person responsible for checking the gear, an FAA certified rigger, can also be an employee of the company.

Overcome: Watching the footage, Flores becomes emotional as he can hear himself choking off camera
parachute
Denial: The Skydive Monterey Bay school has blamed any problems on Flores, who they claim didn’t manage the equipment properly and was distracted by a video camera

‘Essentially unless they bring a rigger to the drop zone and pull every rig off the shelf, there isn’t any way to inspect them,’ Stapleton said.

Flores at least is done with the school.

‘I put my trust and life on the line trusting the school,’ he said. ‘Now that I know that schools can actually do this, never again.’
