After seeing a photograph of his ex-wife the Frasier star stormed out of the CNN building leaving host Piers Morgan shocked, and more importantly without a guest to interview for his show.

Piers told fans about Kelsey’s runner tweeting: ‘Kelsey Grammer was supposed to be on my show now but ran out of the building. Strange.’

‘Kelsey saw a photo of his ex wife Camille in the open to our show and legged it. Extraordinary. Never had this happen before.’

Piers said that he and the 57-year-old Boss star had already chatted and all seemed well.’

Despite his apparent reticence, Kelsey has previously been only too happy to discuss his ex wife, who stars in the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

He has taken swipes at the 44-year-old in interviews, revealing that they hadn’t had sex for ‘ a decade’ before their split.

Kelsey is now married to 29-year-old Katye Walsh, who is the mother of his newborn daughter Faith.

The three-time divorced Frasier star never signed a prenuptial agreement with his ex-wife of 13 years, and she stands to make a fortune – $30 million – in the yet to be agreed settlement.

Johnny Football just got himself a way cooler nickname: Johnny Heisman.

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, taking college football’s top individual prize Saturday night after a record-breaking debut.Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o finished second, and Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein was a distant third in the voting. In a Heisman race with two nontraditional candidates, Manziel broke through the class barrier and kept Te’o from becoming the first purely defensive player to win the award.

Manziel drew 474 first-place votes and 2,029 points from the panel of media members and former winners.

“I have been dreaming about this since I was a kid, running around the backyard pretending I was Doug Flutie, throwing Hail Marys to my dad,” he said after hugging his parents and kid sister.

Manziel seemed incredibly calm after his name was announced, hardly resembling the guy who dashes around the football field on Saturday. He simply bowed his head, and later gave the trophy a quick kiss.

“I wish my whole team could be up here with me,” he said with a wide smile.

Te’o had 321 first-place votes and 1,706 points and Klein received 60 firsts and 894 points.

Just a few days after turning 20, Manziel proved times have truly changed in college football, and that experience can be really overrated.

For years, seniors dominated the award named after John Heisman, the pioneering Georgia Tech coach from the early 1900s. In the 1980s, juniors started becoming common winners. Tim Tebow became the first sophomore to win it in 2007, and two more won it in the next two seasons.

Adrian Peterson had come closest as a freshman, finishing second to USC quarterback Matt Leinart in 2004. But it took 78 years for a newbie to take home the big bronze statue. Johnny Football really can do it all.

Peterson was a true freshman for Oklahoma. As a redshirt freshman, Manziel attended school and practiced with the team last year, but did not play in any games.

He’s the second player from Texas A&M to win the Heisman, joining John David Crow from 1957, and did so without the slightest hint of preseason hype. Manziel didn’t even win the starting job until two weeks before the season.

Who needs hype when you can fill up a highlight reel the way Manziel can?

With daring runs and elusive improvisation, Manziel broke 2010 Heisman winner Cam Netwon’s Southeastern Conference record with 4,600 total yards, led the Aggies to a 10-2 record in their first season in the SEC and orchestrated an upset at then-No. 1 Alabama in November that stamped him as a contender for the trophy.

He has thrown for 3,419 yards and 24 touchdowns and run for 1,181 yards and 19 more scores to become the first freshman, first SEC player and fifth player overall to throw for 3,000 yards and run for 1,000 in a season.

Manziel has one more game this season, when the No. 10 Aggies play Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 4.

Australian Jeff Sheppeard, a New South Wales policeman whose hobby is fishing from an ocean kayak and producing online video, has caught huge black marlin and lots of sharks, but the one sea creature he’s especially wary of is the cuttlefish.

“I’ve caught heaps of sharks from my kayak, but to be honest I’m more scared of putting my fingers in the wrong place around a cuttlefish than getting bit by a shark,” Sheppeard of Kayak Game Fishing told GrindTV Outdoor in an email. “I had a bad experience once while snorkeling and got bitten through a leather glove by a cuttlefish.”

He wasn’t laughing then, but his latest encounter with a cuttlefish a couple miles off Gerrigong proved quite hilarious. He was attacked again, but not with its beak.

Cuttlefish are part of the squid family and can squirt ink, as well as buckets of water, as you can see from the video. At least Sheppeard, who released the cuttlefish, took it well.

“It was funny,” he wrote. “The top half of me got soaked.”

It was definitely better than getting bitten, though.

A convicted killer and former Black Liberation Army member who fled to Cuba became the first woman to be put on the FBI’s most wanted terrorists list on Thursday, and the reward for her capture was doubled to $2 million.

Joanne Chesimard, 65, still lives in Cuba following her escape from a New Jersey prison in 1979, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation said on the 40th anniversary of the crime.

While there is no new threat from Chesimard, she is considered a “domestic terrorist,” the agency said.

“While living openly and freely in Cuba she continues to maintain and promote her terrorist ideology,” said Aaron Ford, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Newark, New Jersey, field office, at a news conference.

Chesimard, now known as Assata Shakur, was convicted in 1977 of the murder of Trooper Werner Foerster on May 2, 1973.

“Today, on the anniversary of Trooper Werner Foerster’s death, we want the public to know that we will not rest until this fugitive is brought to justice,” Ford said.

Asked if the case was part of any larger discussions with the Cuban government, Ford said he could not comment on behalf of the U.S. government regarding policy.

He noted that anyone with information leading to her capture would be eligible for the reward, “whether they are in the United States or abroad.”

Foerster and another trooper stopped Chesimard and two others on the New Jersey Turnpike for a motor vehicle violation, and a gunfight broke out, authorities said.

Foerster, along with a passenger in the car with Chesimard, were killed in the gun battle. Foerster had a 3-year-old son, authorities said.

Chesimard and Clark Squire, the driver of the car, were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Chesimard had left the Black Panther Party by then and became a member of the Black Liberation Army.

During her trial and imprisonment, Chesimard, who was represented by the late civil rights attorney William Kunstler, became a cause among the left, some of whom argued she was a victim of racism and mistreatment.

Attorney Ron Kuby, who worked with Kunstler starting in the 1980s and interviewed her in Cuba in 1987, disputed the FBI’s notion that she poses a threat to the United States.

He said he did not think she had gotten a fair trial and that the U.S. government had been locked in an ongoing battle with black revolutionary movements in the 1970’s.

“Let’s not overstate the contours of this,” Kuby told Reuters. “Assata Shakur was the embodiment of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army at a time when there was a low intensity war between black radicals and the U.S.”

She escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Clinton, New Jersey with the help of three visitors who were members of radical groups and were carrying hidden weapons, authorities said.

She surfaced in Cuba in 1984, they said.

The reward for her capture was being doubled with the goal of having her returned to the United States to serve out her sentence, said New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa.

This additional reward money will be funded by the state’s criminal forfeiture funds, he said.

Rhodes is a solid 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, and he brings a reputation for press coverage from the ACC. Presumably, his size will be important if and when he is matched up on the likes of Calvin Johnson, Brandon Marshall, Jordy Nelson and others, and at least one of them has already noticed and noted his arrival.

Dallas Thomas is a very versatile offensive lineman that was a three year starter at Tennessee.

During Thomas’ freshmen season he played sparingly on special teams, but started every game at left tackle during his sophomore season.

Thomas continued starting at left tackle during his junior season and performed extremely well. One notable performance came against South Carolina when he held Melvin Ingram and Jadeveon Clowney to just two tackles, no tackles for loss and no sacks.

Before Thomas’ senior season the Louisiana native was moved to guard in order to make room for Antonio “Tiny” Richardson at left tackle. Last season the Volunteers had one of the best offensive lines in the country and Thomas was named a second team All-SEC player, as well as a third team All-American.

Thomas has great strength but will probably be a guard at the next level because he does lack the quickness that you’d expect in an NFL caliber left tackle. Given that Thomas has two years of SEC experience playing at left tackle it does make him a slightly more attractive option in the draft, since he has the versatility to play at tackle in a pinch.

One thing that will affect Thomas’ draft stock is that he tore his labrum at the senior bowl in Mobile, AL. It usually takes 4-5 months to recover from that injury, which could likely cause Thomas to miss a significant part of training camp.

Although Thomas was invited to the NFL combine, he was unable to participate due to the injury. He also missed Tennessee’s pro day in March.

Before the injury several draft analysts projected Thomas to be drafted in the second round, some even thought he could possibly go late in the first round. He’s now projected to fall to at least the third round.

Where do we projected Dallas Thomas to be drafted? 

We project that Dallas Thomas will be drafted in the third round, with the 66th overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jaguars are a bit of a wildcard as to what positions they’ll be targeting in the draft. The team has several holes on offense and defense, including major question marks at quarterback and defensive end.

Most likely Jacksonville will address their needs at quarterback and defensive end in the first or second round. The Jaguars have a lot of needs on the offensive line as well and Dallas Thomas would go a long way towards filling those needs.

If Thomas fully recovers from his labrum injury then he will be a fantastic value in the third round, but that’s a big “IF”.

Hard rock legend Ozzy Osbourne took to this Facebook page on Monday to deny one major rumor and confirm another one.

“For the last year and a half I have been drinking and taking drugs,” wrote Osbourne, who has struggled with substance abuse for much of his career before a recent stretch of sobriety. “I was in a very dark place and was an a–hole to the people I love most, my family. However, I am happy to say that I am now 44 days sober.”

He also spoke up to deny swirling rumors that he and longtime wife Sharon Osbourne were on the verge of divorce after 30 years of marriage. “Just to set the record straight, Sharon and I are not divorcing. I’m just trying to be a better person,” wrote Ozzy after media reports had Sharon moving out of the couple’s home and allegedly starting divorce proceedings.

“I would like to apologize to Sharon, my family, my friends and my band mates for my insane behavior during this period,” he said. “And my fans.”

Six years have passed since we have seen Ruthie Camden, the adorable, curly-haired daughter on The WB’s “7th Heaven.” Now, actress Mackenzie Rosman is 23 years old and will reportedly make an appearance in the pages of Maxim.

Rosman recently stripped down to some lacy pink lingerie and posed for photographer Carlos Nunez for an upcoming issue of the men’s magazine, according to OMG! Yahoo! A photo reportedly taken while in a Los Angeles studio on March 28 was later posted to Instagram by Nunez.

Although the photographer eventually removed the photo of Rosman, the actress confirmed the shoot on Twitter.

A rep for Maxim tells The Huffington Post that though the photos have not yet been officially released, the feature is scheduled to appear in the magazine in the next few months.

News of Rosman’s alleged upcoming Maxim spread was quickly shared online Wednesday, but this isn’t the first time the former starlet’s photos have caused a stir.

Back in 2008 some scandalous shots of a more grown up Ruthie Camden surfaced online. The controversy came just years after her “7th Heaven” co-star, Jessica Biel, posed topless in Gear magazine. Biel reportedly did the raunchy shoot to break free of the Christian-themed series, People magazine notes.

Rosman has done little since her days on The WB. She appeared in four episodes of “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” as well as the Edgar Allan Poe fantasy flick “Fading of the Cries.” She has some TV movies in the works for 2013, according to her IMDb profile.

Her editorial will follow a steamy Maxim spread featuring former “Boy Meets World” star Danielle Fishel, who is set to star in the Disney Channel’s spinoff, “Girl Meets World.”

Search teams and scores of volunteers will be combing through a vast southern California canyon in a race against time to find two teens who have been missing since the weekend.

Kyndall Jack, 18, and Nicholas Cendoya, 19, both of Costa Mesa, Calif., called authorities Sunday night and told police they were lost and had run out of water while hiking in Trabuco Canyon. The pair said they thought they were only about a mile from their car before their cellphone apparently died. Police were not able to pinpoint their exact location.

“We’re looking for footprints. We have articles of clothing from each of the subjects,” Orange County Sheriff’s Department Reserve Lt. Chuck Williams said Tuesday.

Bloodhounds picked up Jack and Cendoya’s scent Monday in two locations but police fear that they may be injured.

“If these two were ambulatory, I believe they should have walked out or yelled for help,” Orange County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Erin Giudice said Tuesday.

Authorities say they’re focusing on a 2 mile arc in the Cleveland National Forest, starting from where the teen’s car was found.

“I just hope she is found. She’s not a very experienced hiker,” Kendall Jack’s mother, Dawn, said.

Jack’s father, Russ, is growing more concerned by the minute and feels his daughter is running out of time.

“They don’t have any water to drink. I’m sure they don’t have heavy jackets or anything,” he said.

Search teams and volunteers have fanned out across the area by foot, air and on horseback.

A Facebook page called “Costa Mesa Search Party” has been created to help in the search efforts with people posting coordinates of where they searched for the two teens. Others on the page are offering food and water to those involved in the search.

“I want my daughter found. I want Nick to be found as well,” said Russ Jack. “We’re not going to give up.”

Authorities believe that the favorable weather conditions and age of the teens are working in their favor.

“I’m still very hopeful. They are still young kids. They are very healthy. We will find them,” Giudice said.

Perhaps it was poetic justice that Monique Reid made two free throws to beat seemingly unbeatable Baylor.

The University of Louisville senior is the last remaining key member of the 2009 Final Four team. She has battled through knee injuries that caused her to miss all of last year and eight games this season. U of L coach Jeff Walz said she’s only 50 percent now and played only 13 minutes off the bench Sunday night.

But she played the most important final seconds of the game. Reid drove and drew a foul on Baylor star Brittney Griner with 2.6 seconds left. She made free throws to give the Cardinals an 82-81 victory. When the game was over, Reid had a flashback.

“It took me back to the 2009 team,” the Fern Creek High graduate said. “I felt like I was going to the Final Four. It’s an amazing feeling and it’s great that I could hit those clutch free throws. I just wanted to get on top of the building and scream.”

The 6-foot-1 Reid was fearless in attacking the 6-foot-8 Griner. All game long the Cardinals had been using the 3-point shot (16 of 25), but this time Reid went right into the paint. Right against the NCAA’s all-time leader in blocked shots.

“The play was just push the ball,” Reid said. “I saw Griner coming at me. I tried to make the layup and she took my head off. There was no doubt I was going to take the layup. I would have been surprised if they didn’t call the foul. She fouled me really, really hard.”

Reid, the team’s best post scorer (9.7 ppg), was limited to just eight games last year before getting a medical redshirt due to her troublesome knee.

Nobody was happier to see Reid come through than Walz.

“That was exciting for me,” the coach said. “She’s been through a lot with her injuries. She continued to fight. I felt good when she got fouled. I knew she could step up and make both.”

That put the cap on an unbelievable night for U of L and Reid.

“This is definitely at the top,” she said. “It’s amazing being a senior and being able to do what I did. We played amazing and we went through a lot of adversity during the game. It’s a great feeling.”

Brazil’s richest citizen, Jorge Paulo Lemann, may not be a household name–yet. But the brands he controls are already quite familiar to consumers around the world. With his partners, Lemann runs the makers of Budweiser beer, the Whopper and soon even Heinz ketchup.

Lemann made international headlines when he partnered with Warren Buffet in the largest deal in the food industry’s history, the $23 billion acquisition of Heinz.  Buffet is excited to partner with Lemann, “this is my kind of deal and my kind of partner… I want to learn more about Brazil and Jorge [Paulo Lemann] is a great professor ,” said the Oracle of Omaha to Brazilian Magazine EXAME.

In a speech to students in 2011 organized by Jorge Paulo Lemann’s foundation, Estudar, which provides merit-based scholarships to young Brazilians willing to study in universities like Harvard, the intensely private and media-shy billionaire, worth $17.8 billion, revealed 12 principles that guided him to achieve financial success:

1. Dream Big.

“I always say, to have a big dream requires the same effort as having a small dream. Dream big!”

“Maybe I was accepted to Harvard only because of my tennis skills since I definitively had no great academic achievements. I was 17 and only thought about surfing and playing tennis. I had almost never left Rio de Janeiro and had never been to the United States. Suddenly, I was at Harvard, that place so full of ideas. In my freshman year, I was forced to read Plato and Socrates. I was learning things I had never even heard before. Up to that point my biggest dreams were to surf bigger waves or win a tennis championship.”

Lemann learned he should shoot for the stars, just like most people at Harvard were doing.

 2. Choose partners well.

“The three short years I spent at Harvard, where I lived with excellent people, taught me not only that I must know how to choose my partners but also that choosing excellent partners is a skill you can learn. Obviously, when you spend time with the best, you learn how to choose among them.”

Lemann knows the importance of being among the best. He was chair of the Latin American Advisory Board of the NYSE and in the 1990s was nominated to the board of razor maker Gillette, where he met Warren Buffett.

At Banco Garantia, Lemann worked with Marcel Herrmann Telles, who started as a trainee at Garantia, and Carlos Alberto Sicupira, whom he had met while surfing in Rio de Janeiro. The trio became inseparable and have been acting together in every major transaction ever since.

3. Develop your own long term vision.

“In our bank Garantia we [Lemann, Sicupira and Telles] developed the basic ideas that are part of every single business we engage in. Some of the decisions we made, such as leaving financial companies and buying industrial/commercial companies, [like Burger King and AB Inbev, Budweiser makers] were based on the vision we set up 20 years ago.”

What you do today will cause effects in years to come. Don’t limit yourself to make decisions only focused on the short term. Good ideas have a bigger effect than any temporary fact.

4. Always try to get better. You can always improve.

“You have to be always trying to do something better, or improve yourself all the time.”

Does it sound a bit overwhelming? Well, maybe that’s why you need to focus on the three first principles. It is going to be much easier to get in the habit of constant improvement if you have a big dream, are surrounded by the right people and have a long term vision.

5. Develop your own method to achieve the results you want.

“Look at the four or five essential points of any issue. I’ve always tried to nail questions down to what is essential. Most of our companies have a maximum of five goals and employees working for us also have 5 personal objectives.”

“I developed a system for choosing new classes [at Harvard]. I interviewed former students and professors before signing up for any classes. I also found out that previous exams were available in the library. Soon, I realized that professors usually repeat their questions. This methodology allowed me to know exactly what I would learn before signing up for any class.  It also helped me to change my status from one of the students with the worst grades to a top student while taking six or seven classes per semester instead of only four as most of my peers. I graduated when I was only 20 and was on the dean’s list.”

6. Simple is always better than complicated. Be careful with too much theory.

Einstein once said: “If you can’t explain it to a six year old, you don’t understand it yourself.”

Not only look for simplicity but learn how to explain anything in a simple manner.

7.  Ethical behavior is the best long-term strategy.

“I have learned that the ethics of the so-called markets can be different from what we learn at school. In day-to-day life you have stimulus to behave unethically, but in the long term it always pays off to be ethical.”

“There are some basic principles that are embedded in every company I have a stake in.”

8. Meritocracy  

Those who perform the best must be those who are best rewarded.

9. Ownership: It is fundamental to have partners. Always work with people who are also owners.

Talent retention is one of the hottest topics among corporations of all sizes, from startup to multinationals. I believe principles eight and nine go together. The bottom line is: you want to be surrounded by the best. However, the best must also be willing to be with you as well. To keep the best close to him, Lemann imitated Goldman Sachs’ method of rewarding the most brilliant executives at bank Garantia with stock shares.

10.  Take risks.

“A lot of people study too much, but to do the exceptional you need to take risks.”

“You need to do more than only study. When I was on vacation from Harvard, I would go back to Brazil and enjoyed my summer break playing tennis and surfing. I was always looking for the biggest wave.”

“Every two or three years there would be a storm and some huge waves would show up on Copacabana beach. We were used to surfing only 3- or 4 meter-high waves, but those were at least three times higher. My friends knew it was almost impossible for me to surf such huge waves, but I decided I would do it. I went for it and experienced the maximum adrenaline ever; I felt blood running fast all through my body.”

“For me that was enough. It was dangerous, too dangerous. I mention this story because I think that in life it is important to take some risks. In college we usually don’t learn how to measure risks, we only learn theoretically, but in general college teaches you not to take risks. However, in life, you have to risk.”

Don’t try to be everything for everyone. The only way to achieve excellence is to spend most part of your day doing what you do best.

12. Get your hands dirty

“The best way to learn anything is by doing it.”

Lemann concluded his speech reaffirming the importance of being among the best and said, “I am ready to help, on one way or another, anyone who was accepted to Harvard.”

Zhou Xiaochuan’s grey hair identifies the Chinese central bank chief as someone willing to do things a bit differently to the ranks of bureaucrats with dyed-black hair in Beijing’s other top organs of state – and the struggle he faces getting things done.

Zhou, who took control of the People’s Bank of China in 2002, is the architect of broad financial reforms that have spawned fledgling capital markets, liberalised some interest rates and broken the peg between China’s yuan and the U.S. dollar – a step along the path to turning it into a global currency on a par with the greenback.

But formidable challenges lie ahead as the country has entered a stage where big changes face push-back risks from vested interests, especially from state giants in key sectors.

“The reform task for Zhou will be very arduous and it may not even be completed during his tenure,” said Xu Hongcai, senior economist at China Centre for International Economic Exchanges, a top government think-tank in Beijing.

His tenure was given an unorthodox extension on Saturday by China’s newly installed political chiefs – headed by President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang – in what is seen as a bid to burnish the pro-reform credentials of the new Communist leaders.

Zhou, 65, is at the mandatory retirement age for cabinet-ranked officials, such as central bank governor. But his election as a deputy chairman of parliament’s top advisory body on March 11 gave him “national leader” status and cleared the way for Zhou to stay on at the PBOC.

That makes Zhou not only the longest-serving central bank chief since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, but among the longest-serving in the world.

On the other hand, it does nothing to reduce the scale of the battle he must fight – to make China’s interest rate and currency regimes more market-driven and to open up the restricted capital account – that is seen as full of pitfalls by political hardliners and vested interests alike.

Expanding capital markets would end subsidised access to funds for state firms while expanding investment options beyond the real estate market that local government officials have for years used to fund pet projects and boost promotion prospects.

Zhou’s Western-style hobbies – an avid tennis player, connoisseur of high-end whisky and an opera buff known to sneak out to performances while on official visits overseas – and the belief that China has much to learn about market reforms from the United States have made him vulnerable to ideological attacks.

Zhou has been the object of ire from conservatives within the Communist Party, as well as the occasional flare-up of nationalistic sentiments in Chinese cyberspace.

“He has been criticised by some for paying too much attention to what foreigners say (about China),” said a central bank official who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

But his re-appointment signals that the trained engineer is regarded by political chiefs as someone likely to succeed in delivering reforms to put China’s economy on a more stable long-term footing – and keep the party in power.

Zhou still needs to beef up the PBOC’s clout in internal policy wrangling, as the central bank lacks the independence of institutions like the U.S. Federal Reserve and needs cabinet approval to change interest rates or the value of yuan.

His advocacy of a greater role for the market in setting borrowing costs and currency rates was rooted in his early academic career in the late 1980s and, as a protege of former Premier Zhu Rongji, he helped draw up the blueprint to wean the economy off central planning.

Zhou, a renowned economist, has promoted a number of influential overseas-educated Chinese scholars to key posts. Among them, Yi Gang, who holds an economics PhD from the University of Illinois, is tasked with managing the country’s $3.3 trillion foreign exchange reserves – the world’s largest.

“Governor Zhou’s faith in the free market is deep in his bones – he has been consistent in reforms,” said the central bank official.

Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer was the first to report the deal, which seems to work out for everyone involved.

The Vikings are to receive three draft picks from the Seahawks — a first-round (No. 25 overall) and a seventh-round this year, and a mid-round pick in 2014 — for a player who had threatened to hold out well into the 2013 season and appeared to have no intention of sticking around once his rookie contract ran out a year from now.

The Seahawks add a former Pro Bowler and 2009 offensive rookie of the year to a receiving corps that already includes Sidney Rice and Golden Tate. Harvin has caught for 3,302 yards and 20 touchdowns to go with four rushing scores and five more on kickoff returns.

And Harvin gets to play with a big-time quarterback — Russell Wilson, a rookie sensation in 2012 — for the first time since Brett Favre found the fountain of youth back in ’09. The move will also reunite Harvin with Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who held the same position with the Vikings during Harvin’s charmed first season.

New York Jets general manager John Idzik made the call he had to, connecting with cornerback Darrelle Revis after reports surfaced the team was open to moving its star cornerback in a trade.

“I reached out to Darrelle and I made sure he knew exactly where we were coming from and that this is my first day on the job,” Idzik said Friday on NBC Network’s “Pro Football Talk.” “And our message to everyone was, ‘Give us a chance to get to know each other and introduce ourselves to each other.’

“A lot of the people in the building you know through football circles but you’ve never worked alongside each other. So give us that chance and give us the chance to go through our current roster, ultimately that’s the basis of comparison to whatever you may contemplate doing. We haven’t taken that first step and that’s what I relayed to Darrelle.”

It’s a logical explanation, one that Revis “reacted well” to, according to Idzik. Added the new GM: “My feeling was that he was appreciative to hear from me about what happened.”

The Revis situation becomes the first major challenge of Idzik’s tenure in New York. When healthy, Revis is the NFL’s top cornerback, a player Rex Ryan has called the best in team history. Revis also is demanding the type of long-term investment that would give any football operation pause.

Idzik didn’t tell Revis he would be traded, and he didn’t tell him a deal would get done. He simply stated the obvious: He needs the time to have internal conversations with members of an organization he still is getting to know.

Remember, Idzik essentially is paying for the strategy of his predecessor. When Revis received a “Band-Aid” contract by the Jets in 2010, ex-GM Mike Tannenbaum got Revis back on the field at the cost of knowing he would have to deal with the same headache again.

Tannenbaum is gone, but the Revis conundrum lingers. John Idzik, this is the hand you’ve been dealt. Good luck.

A suspected shoplifter in Florida was slapped with murder charges after a security guard who busted up his attempted heist dropped dead of a heart attack shortly after, authorities said.

Mervin Bettis, 35, was trying to flee a Tampa area Target store with a cartful of more than $1,000 worth of merchandise on May 27 when he was nabbed by Russell Horner, 65 and another guard, authorities said.

Horner, an ex-FBI agent and his partner struggled with the alleged perp for several minutes before finally cuffing him, local station WFTS reported.

According to a security video, Horner appeared a little wobbly after the confrontation, huffing and puffing while barely able to stand, the station said.

A short time later, he collapsed outside the store and was pronounced dead of heart failure at a local hospital.

An autopsy showed that the stress from the struggle with Bettis stopped Horner’s heart, authorities said. The father of two had a heart condition, his wife of 41 years told the station.

Bettis was originally charged with robbery and battery, but was hit with third-degree murder charges this week, the Hillsborough County sheriff’s office said. He faces up to 30 years in prison.

Bettis has a long rap sheet. Family members said he was addicted to stealing, but was not a killer.

“He just has to steal something all the time,” his mother, Patricia, told the St. Petersburg Times.

Fulton County police are investigating after a man was fatally shot inside a famed megachurch in College Park.

The shooting broke out around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at World Changers Church International, led by televangelist Creflo Dollar. The victim was sent to South Fulton Hospital in critical condition but later died, according to police sources.

Police are looking for a black Subuaru in connection with the shooting.

Sources identified the victim as a member of the church’s production crew, and said the church hosts a bible study in the chapel every Wednesday.

Nearby, Bethune Elementary and McNair Middle schools were locked down for about an hour during the shooting investigation. Fulton County Schools spokeswoman Susan Hale said there were no disruptions to the schools.

World Changers Church International in suburban Atlanta became a crime scene Wednesday when a gunman entered and began shooting, killing one, police said.

The golden-domed megachurch, which claims about 30,000 members, is led by well-known prosperity minister Creflo Dollar.

The church has a morning service, but it was not clear whether the service was in progress at the time of the shooting in the chapel, Fulton County police spokeswoman Cpl. Kay Lester said.

Police were searching for the shooter, a man they described as armed and dangerous.

The victim, whose name was not immediately released, died at a hospital.

It was not known if the victim was targeted specifically by the gunman, Lester said.

Dollar has built an international religious empire, with broadcasts of his sermons beamed worldwide and speaking engagements in Europe.

Since he started his ministry in an elementary school cafeteria in 1986, Dollar has earned both praise and criticism.

Supporters say he has preached a message that’s financially empowered his parishioners and challenged the idea that Christians should be ashamed to be rich.

Critics call him “Cash-Flow Dollar,” and say his message perverts the Gospel.

Over 100 shorts will be screened from Singapore, USA, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, Spain, Mexico and South Africa, as well as a selection of films from the Busho Short Film Festival in Hungary.

The Made in Kerry shorts programme celebrates the best of Kerry film-making. Highlights include the BAFTA-winning Pitch Black Heist, starring Michael Fassbender and Liam Cunningham, the animation short Head Over Heels and Home Turf, which celebrates the art of hand turf cutting.

The judging panel of the Short Film Awards this year includes Dave Fanning presiding over the Best International Short category; director and producer Paul Duane (Barbaric Genius, Ballykissangel, Footballers’ Wives) judging the Best Documentary Short; writer, director and producer Terry George (Some Mother’s Son, Hotel Rwanda) for the Best Irish Short category, and Jam Media’s John Rice (Picme, Roy) for the Best Animated Short.

The marriage of music and film will be celebrated with a screening of Fritz Lang’s silent masterpiece Metropolis accompanied by a live score by 3epkano. Meanwhile, an inflatable cinema, no less, will take up residence in the Brandon Hotel in Tralee.

Additional feature films screening in the festival will include Irish debuts The Rás Tailteann, Shamrocracy and The End of the Earth is My Home. Tom Tywker’s Three / Drei will also be screened, the eagerly-anticipated new feature from the director of Run, Lola, Run. This Berlin-set drama centers on a 40-something couple who, separately, fall in love with the same man.

It appears that FOX Tuesday night TV this season will be something of a haven for the 20-something girl. This Tuesday, the season premiere and series premiere of New Girl andThe Mindy Project (respectively) kicked off. Both shows focus on the plights of scattered single women who at best should be described as semi-adults. New Girl’s Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and The Mindy Project’s Mindy (Mindy Kaling) are both on the quest for a full, happy, and vaguely adult life. Mindy is an obstetrician (grown up job), and Jess is a teacher (grown up job). Both have wonderfully hilarious friends (Can anyone resist Schmidt and his hair chutney?), and lovely apartments. Yet neither woman can hold down a sensible, grown-up relationship. On the season premieres Jess faked her identity to hook up with a hot guy, and found herself on an inadvertent date with a husky man named “Bear Claw.” Mindy, before a blind date, prayed aloud in the back of a cab, “Dear Lord, please let this date be good. May he have the wealth of Mayor Bloomberg, the personality of Jon Stewart, the face of Michael Fassbender, the penis of … Michael Fassbender.” There is something about these scenarios that speaks right to my 25-year-old heart; probably because this whole set up is just so damn accurate.

Allow me to clarify. The accuracy of these two shows comes across in a very sitcom-y way; it’s not accurate in the OMG-has-Lena-Dunham-been-eaves-dropping-on-me way that HBO’s Girls is, it’s accurate in the I’ve-felt-these-feelings, and if I were funnier would have said those words, kind of way. Jess and Mindy have perfect hair (even when they don’t), are constantly surrounded by flattering lighting, and hot guys abound. But the way these characters exist within these created spaces gets right to the heart of the self-doubt that comes with that whole growing up thing.

Yes there are laughs, yes there are hot flings, but what these shows hit upon is that moment in young adulthood when things stop being awesome and start becoming a little bit depressing. Like when Mindy invites her hot boy-toy Brit over for a late night rendez vous; he’s all wrong for her but Mindy assures her best friend that British Jeremy isn’t all bad. “I think he is Hugh Grant in About a Boy,” Mindy says. “I think he is Hugh Grant in real life,” her friend replies. Or when Nick on New Girl is denied a credit card and told that he has, “the credit rating of a homeless ghost.”

Unlike 20-somethings on shows like Friends, there is something infinitely relatable here. Where the Friends characters always felt just a smidge too grown-up, or too much like caricatures, the new characters on FOX accurately (but attractively) reflect that embarrassing and difficult time in life when you’re just on the precipice of adulthood but haven’t quite made the leap. In Mindy’s case, she’s walk-of-shaming her way to deliver a baby. In the immortal words of Britney Spears, “Not a girl, not yet a woman.”

The seasons have only just begun but if New Girl sticks to the technique that moved the show away from the “adorkable” schtick at the beginning of season 1, to the real, relatable ensemble comedy that defined the end of the season, it will continue to be one of the only shows on TV that accurately portrays the young American sentiment. The Mindy Project seems poised to do the same. These are portraits of today’s young adults; but today’s young adults glamorized.

Russian billionaire Alexander Lebedev was charged on Wednesday with hooliganism and battery over a televised punch-up and faces up to five years in jail in what he says is revenge for criticising President Vladimir Putin.

The 52-year-old backer of British newspapers The Independent and London’s Evening Standard, whose net worth was put at $1.1 billion by Forbes magazine in March, was also ordered by federal criminal investigators not to leave the country.

Lebedev, who owns a bank and a campaigning Russian newspaper, is rare among the so-called oligarchs in speaking out against the Kremlin and says he is a victim of a crackdown on dissent since Putin returned to the presidency in May.

He faces the same charge of hooliganism motivated by religious, political, racial, ethnic or ideological hatred as three women from the punk band Pussy Riot, who were jailed for two years in August after bursting into a Russian Orthodox church and belting out a profanity-laced anti-Putin protest.

“I know the position of the president,” Lebedev, a softly-spoken former KGB spy, told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday in which he denied funding the opposition and said he had upset the Kremlin by campaigning against corruption.

“He thinks it is true that I have been funding (the opposition), so I was violating rule No. 1 – if you have money you should not interfere (in politics).”

Prosecutors opened an investigation into Lebedev last year over an incident in which he leapt out of his chair and threw a punch at property developer Sergei Polonsky, himself a one-time billionaire, during a television talk show.

He denied hitting Polonsky in the face although Polonsky fell to the floor and looked dazed.

Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, declined to comment. He had previously said that the Kremlin had not put pressure on Lebedev or other wealthy Russians over their business interests.

 

RULE NUMBER ONE

Lebedev’s business interests in Russia include a bank and real estate assets; he owns a stake in state-controlled airline Aeroflot and has a potato farm.

Most rich Russians have avoided criticising the Kremlin since the arrest in 2003 of former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, once Russia’s richest man, after he defied Putin by taking an interest in opposition politics. Khodorkovsky’s oil empire was broken up and sold off, and he is still in prison.

But with former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, Lebedev co-owns the Novaya Gazeta newspaper which has for years criticised the Kremlin and exposed corruption in Russia. Four of its journalists were killed between 2001 and 2009.

He says he is a victim of increasingly aggressive tactics to silence critics since Putin returned to the presidency for a six-year term in May, following the biggest protests against him since he was first elected president in 2000.

Other steps which the opposition says have targeted them include laws increasing fines for protesters, tighter controls of foreign-funded campaign groups and tougher Internet rules.

One protest leader, anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny, has been charged with theft and faces up to 10 years in jail. Another, Gennady Gudkov, has been expelled from parliament and could face two years in prison on charges of continuing his business activities while a deputy. Both deny the accusations.

A source familiar with the situation said that Lebedev was charged at the start of a two-hour-long procedure.

He was asked to sign a form limiting his travel but refused, citing his legal rights, the source said, adding that Lebedev did not intend to leave Russia.

A trial is expected to start in late October, the source said.

Lebedev’s lawyer, Genri Reznik, told Ekho Moskvy radio the charges against the media magnate were “absolutely made up”.

“I believe this is revenge for Lebedev’s public activity, for his real counteraction of corruption, for publishing an opposition newspaper, for supporting Navalny … He has many ‘sins’ (in the eyes of the Kremlin),” he said.

Lebedev says his efforts to sell off his business assets in Russia, because of pressure from the Kremlin, have so far failed because investors have been scared off by a “smear campaign”.

His National Reserve Bank was searched by security service agents in February, and he says he has been under surveillance.

His son Evgeny Lebedev, who owns the Independent and Evening Standard, said in a statement the charge was “an extraordinarily disproportionate response” to the incident in the TV studio.

“My father has been targeted because of his determination to fight against corruption and to be a crusader for democracy in a country where this has not always been welcome,” he said.

“I really hope that this does not presage a new phase of crackdowns on those who speak out against injustice.”

In the clip, our costumed heroine Wren (Justice) and her friend April (“Suburgatory” star Jane Levy) are trying to get a ride to a Halloween party and in order to do so must use charm and mild flirtation on two of their slightly nerdy classmates, Roosevelt and Peng. Although hesitant at first, Wren flexes her flirt muscles by grasping Roosevelt’s wrist. The obviously smitten teen quickly agrees to bend his parent’s driving rules in order to chauffeur April and Wren to their party.

When MTV News caught up with Justice recently to talk about her big-screen debut, the “Victorious” star promised that “Fun Size” is a feel-good film for all audiences.

“There’s lots of action and adventure but there’s also a lot of romance and heart to this film,” she said. “The experience of filming this movie was different for me because it all takes place during one night — I would say 85 percent of this movie takes place at night — so our call times would start at 7 p.m. and then we’d go and shoot all night until the sun came up and then we’d sleep during the day. So that was something, and we all had to really adjust to that but it made for a lot of fun.”

One of those particularly fun moments involved a complicated-but-humorous stunt that involved a giant chicken and thrusting.

“Being in a yellow Volvo while a giant chicken is thrusting against this car was an interesting experience,” Justice recalled with a laugh. “We had to move our bodies and shake a little bit — it was pretty hilarious. That doesn’t happen very often.”

“Fun Size,” also starring Johnny Knoxville, Ana Gasteyer and Thomas Mann, sweeps into theaters October 26.

The MTV VMAs are many things: entertaining, action-packed and known to showcase and introduce our favorite and future music superstars. Case in point, the VMA debut of Korean viral video phenomenon Psy.

Psy was a surprise guest at Thursday’s main event, brought onstage by host Kevin Hart to talk briefly about his “Gangnam Style” video, which has more than 100 million views on YouTube. The two shared in a brief back-and-forth conversation that ended with Hart trying to emulate the Korean phenom’s signature dance moves from the video.

MTV News was there the moment Psy came offstage, and we spoke with the man about his stage experience, his recent success and his new deal with Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun.

“I cannot believe what’s going on,” Psy said when asked about the success of his video and his road to the VMAs. “The increase [in people knowing who I am] is incredible. I did not expect things like this. I just made a video in Korea and uploaded it and within 50 days, I’m here now.”

And it seems as though he’s not going anywhere but onward and upward anytime soon. In speaking about being signed by Braun, Psy seemed to still be in disbelief about it.

“What I heard from Scooter is that he saw my video and said to his C.O.O., ‘Oh, find him, I want to sign him.’ Scooter found my video seven days after its release,” Psy recalled, adding that he’ll be spending some more time in the U.S. introducing himself to various companies and individuals before going into the recording studio.

“I’m here to promote myself, not the music video,” he said. “Myself [first] and then I’m going to do some work with Scooter.”

So what can we expect from Psy’s upcoming album? Pop songs in Korean and English?

“I can do both, so maybe some [in] English,” he said.

We then asked Psy if Braun had set him up with any producers or if he planned on enlisting any help from industry insiders in Braun’s camp.

“Actually, I’m composing and producing it myself, so I don’t need anyone,” he said.

He is also not a man who accepts second best, as the rivals who have come and gone, lining their pockets with silver and bronze, can attest.

Just now though, Baltimore-based Phelps wants to enjoy life outside professional sport, the 27-year-old having been cocooned since his mid-teens, visiting the world’s greatest cities but more likely to be taking in the sights from a coach window than on foot. He could look but rarely touch. Now all that changes.

‘I want to travel a bunch. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do,’ Phelps said. ‘I’ve been able to see so many amazing places in the world but I’ve really never got to experience them.

‘I’ve seen the pool and hotels, every year over the last 12 years of being in the national team. I’d like to experience some things, whether it’s travelling through Europe or going back to Australia and being able to go around Australia, or South Africa – something (South African swimmer) Chad (Le Clos) and I were talking about.

‘There’s a lot of things I want to do for myself just to be able to relax, and even though I am retiring and the competitive side of my career is over, there’s a lot of things I want to do around the sport.

‘I would like to take it to a higher level than it is right now, and continue to grow the sport more and more.’

He also has a charitable foundation, aimed at encouraging positive lifestyles for American youngsters.

‘I’m going to be able to put more time and effort into that,’ Phelps said, ‘and also my summer schools. Being able to teach children how to swim and live healthily is something that’s very important to me.’

Phelps won four golds in London, after eight in Beijing and six in Athens. It is also often forgotten he raced in Sydney as a 15-year-old too, but that further underlines how swimming has been his life since childhood.

As well as two relay successes in London, including Saturday’s 4x100metres medley, he claimed individual gold in 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley.

Phelps could easily swim on and remain competitive on a world level between now and the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016.

‘Sure, if I wanted to I could still go,’ he said. ‘But I’m ready to be done. I’m ready to retire and move on to other things.

‘Whatever route I go down I’m going to have goals. I’m still a very competitive person, so if I go out and practice more at golf I’m going to drop x amounts of strokes.

‘I’m going to have things I’ll be able to go for and try to achieve. That’s the mentality I have and the competitiveness I have, and I think it’ll always be with me.’

As a boy, Phelps was diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and had a school teacher who thought he would amount to little in life. It was a prediction that was wildly off target, with Phelps emerging as a national hero, sporting nobility.

As he prepared to mount the podium in the Aquatics Centre last night, waiting for the Star-Spangled Banner to strike up, Phelps turned to team-mate Brendan Hansen who is joining him in retirement.

‘As soon as I stuffed up on the podium I could feel the tears start coming.

‘I said to Nathan (Adrian, who swam the anchor leg), “Oh no, there they come, it’s going to be pretty brutal”.

‘They just started coming. I tried to fight it but I just decided to let it go, and whatever happened, happened. I was just taking in these last moments of my swimming career.

‘To be able to sit here and say I’ve done everything I wanted to do in my swimming career is something that’s pretty special.

‘That’s the only thing I wanted to say when I retired. I wouldn’t change anything. I didn’t miss anything.

‘I’ve had the opportunity to do something nobody else has ever done before, so I’m very happy with that.’

Police authorities in Bowling Green, Ky., say 19 children were left inside a filthy home unsupervised for a week with no food or air-conditioning.

Deputies said the children ranged in age from 8  months to 14 years old  and were taken to a nearby medical center Monday before they were  released into protective custody, according to ABC News station WBKO.

On Tuesday, Jackie Farah was arrested and charged with 14 counts of criminal abuse and five counts of wanton endangerment, according to WBKO. She is being held without bail. Police are still looking for  Irving “Joe” Smith, who they believe is the children’s father.

Warren County Sheriff’s Detective Tim Robinson said Farah is believed to be the mother of  at least some of the children  in what looks like a blended family, according to the Associated Press.

Warren said Smith and Farah told a neighbor last week that they had a family emergency in Michigan and asked the neighbor to check on the kids, according to the AP.

The couple told police that they had car problems, which caused the week-long absence.

“I do not believe that story. I don’t believe that story because of things that have happened in the past. And the kind of people they are, I just don’t believe that,” said neighbor Annie Adams, who spoke to WBKO.

Adams initially reported the home situation  two weeks ago to police. At that time only 10 children were found inside. Adams is frustrated that it took police so long to finally take action and remove the children from the home.

“So, I call about these kids and they come out here and they don’t do anything. So what happens? You’re not going to do anything until one of them gets severely hurt or killed,” said Adams. “I just think it’s ridiculous. As a parent, it’s ridiculous.”

Adams said she has had a turbulent history with these neighbors and will be forced to move her family in fear of retaliation.

“All this conflict in the neighborhood and what’s happening with these people is actually going to force us out of our house and to me that’s not fair,” said Adams.

Police said nine dogs and one cat were also found in the home.

Gabby Douglas, the newly minted American sweetheart and Olympic champion in the all-around, returned to the athletes’ village on Thursday to end her night by doing what every teenager would do: She Googled herself.

There, filling the computer screen, was her name again and again, and photos of her, again and again.

“Everything popped up,” the 16-year-old Douglas said with her trademark giggle. “Gabby Douglas wins the all-around. Gabby Douglas makes history. It definitely was an amazing thing!”

Douglas, a 4-foot-11, 94-pound puny package of rocket-fueled energy, on Thursday became the first black gymnast to win the individual all-around Olympic gold medal. She also became the first American to win both the all-around and team events at the same Olympics, and only the fourth American woman to win the all-around title.

But Douglas said the gravity of that has not hit her. She forgot to bring her gold medals to an appearance on NBC’s Today Show on Friday, leaving them “somewhere in her room.” Later, she was surprised when a fan driving by slammed on the brakes, stopping to beg Douglas for a photo.

“What are you doing?” Douglas said she was thinking when the fan had stopped. “Oh, yeah, I remember now. Sure.”

Mary Lou Retton, the 1984 Olympic all-around champion, has told Douglas to get used to the attention. While Douglas might not realize it now — “You live in the village and everybody’s got medals,” Retton said — winning the all-around is life-changing.

At the 1984 Los Angeles Games, Retton was just a young girl from West Virginia trying to make it big in a sport dominated by Eastern Europeans. She was the first American to win the all-around title, skyrocketing her into stardom, and her megawatt smile and girl-next-door demeanor made her even bigger. She said fans still stop to tell her they remember where they were when she won her Olympic title.

“Oh my gosh, yes, she’s clueless as to what she has done until she gets back to the States,” Retton said of Douglas. “Literally, a seven-year-old is watching the Olympics, and that seed is going to be placed and they’re going to say, ‘I’m going to be just like her.’ She’s going to break barriers on so many different levels.”

Douglas, who left her family in Virginia Beach when she was 14 to train in Iowa, said she wants to be a role model for minorities. One of her two sponsors, Kellogg’s, has spoken to her agent, Sheryl Shade, about outreach in minority communities. Plans are also in the works for Douglas to take part in Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign to promote exercise.

But her success also is a boon for gymnastics in the United States, said Bela Karolyi, the legendary coach who counts Retton among his pupils.

“Thousands and thousands of African-American kids are going to go into gymnastics because of her because they will want to be the new Gabby Douglas,” he said. “With Mary Lou in 1984, her popularity doubled the number of gymnastics participants in this country. I expect a similar effect with Gabby. She came out of nowhere and was an explosion, boom! She’s going to be huge, huge.”

Just how huge she will be remains unclear, but Douglas has the potential to make millions not just because of her success — but also because she is so perky. The ever-effervescent Retton is still doing television commercials when the Olympics roll around.

Bob Williams, chief executive of Burns Entertainment & Sports Marketing, a company that matches advertisers with celebrities for endorsements, said the all-around gold medal is the route to a seven-figure endorsement, at least.

Advertisers have been colorblind for years, he said, so it doesn’t matter if she is black or white — what counts most is personality.

“It’s not like Nastia Liukin or the other recent all-around gymnasts didn’t have that, they just didn’t have it as much,” he said. “In Gabby, you see the smile, the personality, the warmth. There’s a number of similarities to her and Mary Lou. The one disadvantage is that she really did peak at the Olympics, so we’re just getting to know her.”

Douglas didn’t win her first major competition until last month, when she beat world champion Jordyn Wieber at Olympic trials. She signed her first deal, with Procter & Gamble, a few days later.

At first, her mother, Natalie Hawkins, was nervous that all the top sponsorships were taken. But she had already made the wise but difficult decision to let Douglas train 1,200 miles away, and felt in her gut that waiting until the Olympics to sign more sponsorships was the right thing to do.

Hawkins, a single mother and debt collector, now can see that her intuition was spot on. Less than 18 hours after winning the all-around, Douglas was already on the cover of a cereal box, Corn Flakes. Her rise into celebrity was steep.

Douglas received shout-outs from celebrities like Beyoncé, who dedicated a page of her blog to her. “WOW — what a thrill to watch you take this Gold!” she wrote. “Thank you for inspiring all of us!”

Lil Wayne also posted a tweet about her. “Glad I lived to see what Gabby Douglas did in the Olympics. Icon,” he wrote. (He is her favorite rapper, but said she listens to clean versions of his songs “because my mom said I can’t put into my head all that swearing.”)

Several proposals for dates have come in, but Douglas never has had a boyfriend and Hawkins wants to keep it that way for now.

“I don’t think you can prepare for that,” said Hawkins, as she stood with her three other children. “What I just try to do, I just try to lean on the morals and the values that my parents taught me and the morals and values that I’ve instilled in them. We’re a pretty grounded family.”

Douglas’s Olympic experience isn’t over yet, though. She still has the uneven bars final on Monday, and the balance beam final on Tuesday. And her coach, Liang Chow, isn’t sure how she will come back to earth by then because the distractions are coming rapid-fire.

“How can I stop it?” Chow said with a laugh. “There’s no way to stop it.”

An alleged gang member has been charged in the shooting death of a 7-year-old Chicago girl who died while out selling candy with her mother last week, the Chicago Tribune and other news organizations are reporting.

Jerrell Dorsey, 26, has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in the death of Heaven Sutton, who was struck by a stray bullet, the Tribune reports. A judge has ordered Dorsey held without bond, according to the news organization.

Police apprehended Dorsey Friday night as he tried to flee the back of a building, police told the Tribune.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel expressed frustration over the shooting in an e-mail, the Tribune reports.

“Bringing Heaven’s shooter to justice will not bring her back, but I hope it will provide some level of solace to her family,” Emanuel wrote.

The girl’s mother, Ashake Banks, told the Tribune she was relieved.

“Maybe I can get a little rest tonight,” she was quoted in theTribune as saying. “It’s a start.”

Dorsey is believed to be a member of the Four Corner Hustlers gang, police sources told the Tribune.

The mother was collecting funds for the girl’s funeral, the news organization reports.

The U.S. Supreme Court will rule Thursday on the constitutionality of the sweeping health care law championed by President Barack Obama.

The high court announced a series of other decisions on Monday, but not the most anticipated one. It announced that all remaining rulings for the year will come in three days.

The stakes cannot be overstated — what the justices decide will have an immediate and long-term impact on all Americans, both in how they get medicine and health care, and also in vast, yet unknown areas of “commerce.”

Saving this ruling for the final day “may not be political, but they understand drama,” said David Cole, a Georgetown University constitutional law professor. He added, “It’s also the most difficult case, the most important case, so they may want the extra few days to make sure that they’re happy with their written opinions.”

The nation’s highest court heard three days of politically charged hearings in March on the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a landmark but controversial measure passed by congressional Democrats despite pitched Republican opposition.

The challenge focused primarily on the law’s requirement that most Americans buy health insurance or pay a fine.

Supporters of the plan argued the “individual mandate” is necessary for the system to work, while critics argued it is an unconstitutional intrusion on individual freedom.

Four different federal appeals courts heard challenges to parts of the law before the Supreme Court ruling, and came up with three different results.

Courts in Cincinnati and Washington voted to uphold the law, while the appeals court in Atlanta struck down the individual mandate.

A fourth panel, in Richmond, Virginia, put its decision off until penalties for failing to buy health insurance take effect in 2014.

The polarizing law, dubbed “Obamacare” by many, is the signature legislation of Obama’s time in office.

After a lengthy and heated debate marked by intense opposition from the health insurance industry and conservative groups, the law passed Congress along strictly partisan lines in March 2010.

When Obama signed the legislation later that month, he called it historic said it marked a “new season in America.”

While it was not the comprehensive national health care system liberals initially sought, supporters said the law would reduce health care costs, expand coverage and protect consumers.

The law establishes a staged series of reforms over several years, including banning insurance companies from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, forbidding insurers from setting a dollar limit on health coverage payouts, and requiring them to cover preventative care at no additional cost to consumers.

It also required individuals to buy health insurance, either through their employers or a state-sponsored exchange, or face a fine beginning in 2014.

Supporters argue the individual mandate is critical to the success of the legislation, because it expands the pool of people paying for insurance and ensures that healthy people do not opt out of buying insurance until they needed it.

Critics said the provision gave the government too much power over what they said should be a personal economic decision.

Twenty-six states led by Florida say individuals cannot be forced to buy insurance, a “product” they may neither want nor need. And they argue that if that provision is unconstitutional, the entire law must go.

The Justice Department countered that since every American will need medical care at some point in their lives, individuals do not “choose” whether to participate in the health care market.

The partisan debate around such a sweeping piece of legislation has encompassed almost every traditional hot-button topic: abortion and contraception funding, state and individual rights, federal deficits, end-of-life care, and the overall economy.

During arguments on March 27, Justice Anthony Kennedy said the law appeared to “change the relationship between the government and the individual in a profound way.”

Chief Justice John Roberts argued that “all bets are off” when it comes to federal government authority if Congress was found to have the authority to regulate health care in the name of commerce.

Liberal justices, however, argued people who don’t pay into the health system by purchasing insurance make care more expensive for everyone.

“It is not your free choice” to stay out of the market for life, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said during arguments.

“I think the justices probably came into the argument with their minds made up. They had hundreds of briefs and months to study them,” said Thomas Goldstein, publisher of SCOTUSblog.com and a prominent Washington attorney, though he conceded that “the oral arguments (in March) might have changed their minds around the margin.”

Americans are largely split over the reform effort and its legality, according to polling.

A March poll for CNN by ORC International found that while support for the law appears to be growing, 50% of Americans opposed the law, 43% supported it and 7% had no opinion.

Nearly three-quarters of respondents said they wanted the Supreme Court to overturn at least some of the law’s provisions, although the poll did not specify which ones.

The law, which helped spur the creation of the conservative tea party movement, is likely to be a centerpiece of the presidential election campaign.

Obama’s presumptive Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, has promised to repeal the measure if elected.

But 76% of respondents in the March CNN/ORC poll said a Supreme Court ruling against the law still wouldn’t change their minds about whom to vote for in November.

The 2010 passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act came after months of bare-knuckled fights over politics and policy and a century of federal efforts to offer universal health care.

The legislation signed by Obama reached 2,700 pages, nine major sections and 450-some provisions.

The first lawsuits challenging the health care overhaul began just hours after the president signed the legislation.

It was scorching pain that could have been avoided.

Violet and Zoe Michener came home from field day so burned that their mother rushed them to the hospital.

The sisters aren’t just fair-skinned. Zoe has a form of albinism that makes her particularly sun-sensitive.

“Yeah, I was crying about my sunburn,” Zoe said.

Mother Jesse Michener of Tacoma, Wash. said she regrets not putting sunscreen on them that morning since it was raining.

Even so, doctors recommend re-applying every 2 to 3 hours when outside but that’s against their school rules.

“They couldn’t even reapply sunscreen without a doctor’s note. They couldn’t carry that in their backbacks,” said Jesse Michener.

The school district said it has to ban sunscreen because it’s state law.

“Because so many additives in lotions and sunscreens cause allergic reaction in children, you have to really monitor that,” said Dan Voelpel, Tacoma School District Spokesman.

Sunscreens are regulated by the FDA as an over the counter drug.

Many American schools don’t allow them without a doctor’s note

In fact, California is the only state to allow sunscreen in school without one.

With millions of kids gearing up for summer camps and daycare where they’ll be exposed to midday sun, the situation has doctors worried.

“Having a sunburn in childhood dramatically increases your risk of skin cancer later in life,” said dermatologist Doris Day.

Day believes even though suncreen allergies are very rare, they don’t justify a ban.

“I can’t see any justification for any school to tell a child that they are not allowed to apply sunscreen,” she said.

Police in Grayson County are looking for thieves who broke into a family’s home while they were attending their son’s funeral.

Police say the “low-life” burglars broke into the house on Higdon Road in Clarkson sometime on Wednesday. They ransacked the home stealing jewelry, guns, and electronics.

“They says the worst thing that can happen to parents is lose a child, but for us it’s like the worst you can do is lose two children”, Cindy Higdon said .

Cindy and her husband Dennis are no strangers to loss, their eldest daughter died in a car crash when she was nine.  But losing their son Christian is something different.

“When they say you’re child is murdered…Jenna was an accident, but this is murder.”

But the Higdons had only begun the struggle of saying goodbye to their son when their grieving was abruptly interrupted.  On Wednesday they came home from Christian’s funeral to find their home ravaged.

“Stuff strewn everywhere, they went through everything we own, every cabinet, everything we own”, Dennis Higdon said.

Electronics, jewelry, guns…gone.  The thieves even went through Christian’s room, stealing keepsakes. Police believe the culprits not only knew the family would be gone  all day, but had a look out watching them at the funeral.

“It is a sick feeling to think that that person sat and literally watched us go through hell”, Cindy said.

Their son’s death wasn’t a complete shock to the couple.  They’d told me they’d been worried something would happen to Christian. The third of five children they’ve adopted from around the world.

“Premonition or whatever, I just knew”, Dennis said.

Christian had been living in Hardin county as he struggled with drug addiction.  His parents don’t know who he met there or why one of those people attacked him with a hatchet Saturday.  But they hear from the witness who comforted him as he died on her lawn that Christian’s last thoughts were of his family.
A family that included his 10-month-old child.  Who’s birth, his mom says, was the happiest she’s ever seen her son.

So the Higdons renew their struggle to move forward, not just for themselves but for the three brothers and sisters and baby boy Christian left behind.

“I feel like I don’t want to go on, I don’t want to do anything again but it’s not fair to them”, Cindy said.

So far, the police have no leads.

The couple’s son, Christian Higdon, was murdered Saturday night in Elizabethtown. Jamie Wagers is facing murder charges for his death.

A Minneapolis police officer faces third-degree felony assault charges after punching a man at an Andover bar.

The incident happened early Saturday night at Tanner’s Station.

According to the criminal complaint, Sgt. David Clifford took offense to some language Brian Vander Lee was using at a nearby table.

Vander Lee is now on life support. Pictures taken by family show a black eye and swelling around his head. He’s had two surgeries and remains in a medically induced coma.

The photographs capture what will likely be a long road to recovery. It is a stark contrast to the incident that sent him to Mercy Hospital.

“I don’t know if anything would warrant that kind of attack,” said Mike Archambault, Vander Lee’s friend.

Archambault was just arriving to Tanner’s Station and was talking on the phone with his best friend, Vander Lee.

“He started to say something and the phone conversation just went dead,” said Archambault.

Vander Lee had just been knocked unconscious with a single punch. Archambault watched the surveillance video of the attack and says it was unprovoked.

Clifford told investigators that he asked Vander Lee to stop using the offensive language, but confronted him again, when it didn’t stop.

In the complaint, Clifford said he thought Vander Lee was going to hit him, so he threw the first punch.

“I still have a hard time believing that, a sergeant,” said Archambault.

Clifford is a nearly 20-year veteran of the Minneapolis Police Department.

“I feel bad for every police department, because you get one guy that does some crap like this, it gives them all a bad name,” said Archambault.

Sgt. Clifford is on paid administrative leave. He was off-duty Saturday night. Minneapolis police wouldn’t comment but did send out a tweet outlining Clifford’s numerous awards.

Clifford admitted he did not answer the door when officers tried to contact him.

The criminal complaint also says no employees heard Vander Lee using offensive language and there were no other complaints.

Four members of a Japanese climbing team were presumed dead after being swept off a hill in an avalanche two days ago on Mt. McKinley, the tallest peak in North America, the U.S. National Park Service said on Saturday.

Five people were climbing the Alaska mountain around 2 a.m. Thursday when a wave of snow crashed over them, snapping the rope that tethered them together, according to a park service news release.

The fifth climber, Hitoshi Ogi, 69, was swept into a crevasse and survived with minor injuries. When he climbed out, Hitoshi could not find his fellow climbers in the debris. His solo descent to the base camp took 14 hours, officials said.

More than two days later, rangers and volunteers still searching did not expect to find the other climbers  alive. All four were presumed dead from snow burial or injuries.

The missing are Yoshiaki Kato, 64; Masako Suda, 50; Michiko Suzuki, 56; and Tamao Suzuki, 63. They  were members of the Myagi Workers Alpine Federation in Japan’s Miyagi prefecture.

The team had made the climb during the height of mountaineering season, on Mt. McKinley’s most popular route. There are currently 395 people attempting the climb, officials said.

Heavy snowfall and strong winds have made climbing Mt. McKinley particularly difficult this year. About 37% of the climbers have reached its 20,320-foot summit.

The mountain is named after President William McKinley. Its alternate name, Denali, means “the high one” in an Alaska native language.

“Push Girls,” a reality show about five attractive women in wheelchairs, is likely to engender a number of reactions in viewers, not all of them helpful to the cause of illuminating the lives of people with disabilities. From the premiere, showing Monday night on the Sundance Channel, it’s not entirely clear which of those reactions the series’s creators are going for. But the intent seems to be good, and if they can find the elusive line between voyeuristic and didactic, the show could become something of a milestone for a lot of people who have felt invisible for a long time.

In the first episode we meet four Los Angeles friends — Angela Rockwood, Auti Angel and Tiphany Adams, who were paralyzed in car accidents, and Mia Schaikewitz, whose paralysis resulted from a medical condition. (Chelsie Hill, who was also injured in a car accident, will be added to the group later.) The “push” in the show’s title doesn’t refer to assistance these women need to get around. It’s push as in boundary pushing.

The show quickly makes clear just how independent these women are, with shots of Ms. Adams driving, Ms. Angel grabbing something off a high shelf at a grocery store and so on. And it just as quickly answers the two questions that many able-bodied people unfamiliar with this universe immediately have (and, yes, sometimes still bluntly ask): How did you end up in that chair, and can you still have sex?

The accidents and Ms. Schaikewitz’s condition (a ruptured blood vessel in her spinal cord that, she recounts, “paralyzed me from the waist down over the course of a half-day”) are summarized, but the four women we initially meet seem long past the brooding stage. As for sex, various boyfriends and, in Ms. Adams’s case, a girlfriend, are introduced, and Ms. Angel, who is married, is contemplating trying to have a child.

“Being 42 and in a wheelchair, most people don’t think that I can have a baby,” she says. “But I physically can. I just don’t know if I’m ready to give up my career and my independence.” (She was a dancer before her accident and still is.)

The premiere episode tends to lapse into a “You go, girl” mode typical of shallow treatments of disability, with fist-pumping and treacly background music. It’s a tone that subtly demeans, suggesting that simple things like having head shots taken (Ms. Rockwood is trying to restart a modeling career) must be applauded because, golly, for someone in a wheelchair to do anything other than sit there is a triumph.

A little of that may be necessary to hook an audience that has come to expect this treatment whenever a person with a disability turns up on television, but the faster this show sheds that tone and its preoccupation with sex, the more useful it will be. There are numerous other things we’d like to know about these interesting women besides the particulars of their love lives: their finances, their experiences on the job, their journey to get to the confidence level they seem to have achieved, their hopes for new technologies and medical breakthroughs.

Another challenge for “Push Girls” is dispelling the impression that these women are representative. Certain viewers might well look at them and conclude, “Gorgeous, smart, independent; I guess the disabled-Americans problem has been solved, so I can go back to not thinking about it.”

The reality, of course, is that vast numbers of people in wheelchairs aren’t young and independent, are in poor physical health, don’t have money and can’t even get interviewed for jobs. The show needs to make sure to convey that it is about five unique and engaging individuals who can shed light on some aspects of the disabilities universe but aren’t that whole universe.

A fisherman was surprised when he hauled up a prosthetic leg from the Gulf of Mexico, and even more surprised when he was able to find its owner.

The leg is emblazoned with the logo from the University of Kentucky and the school’s wildcat mascot. Fisherman Matt Willingham says he contacted the manufacturer about finding the leg’s owner.

WKYT-TV (http://bit.ly/LHUOHZ) in Lexington reports that it belonged to Fred Robinson, who played on the school’s football team in the 1980s and had lost his leg in a work accident five years ago.

Robinson says he was shocked to find out someone found his $30,000 prosthetic leg.

Robinson, who now lives in Florida, says he lost the prosthetic while swimming over the Memorial Day weekend.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. on Friday assigned two United States attorneys to lead separate criminal investigations into recent disclosures to the news media of national security secrets, saying they were authorized to “follow all appropriate investigative leads within the executive and legislative branches of government.”

Their appointment followed calls in Congress this week for a crackdown on leaks after disclosures on topics including drone strikes and a computer virus attack against Iran’s nuclear program. Several of the revelations were published by The New York Times.

“The unauthorized disclosure of classified information can compromise the security of this country and all Americans, and it will not be tolerated,” Mr. Holder said in a statement. “The Justice Department takes seriously cases in which government employees and contractors entrusted with classified information are suspected of willfully disclosing such classified information to those not entitled to it, and we will do so in these cases as well.”

Several members of Congress from both parties this week expressed alarm about recent leaks, and some Republicans had called for the appointment of a special prosecutor with greater independence from day-to-day supervision by the Obama administration to investigate.

But Mr. Holder instead assigned two prosecutors — Ronald C. Machen, the United States attorney for the District of Columbia, and Rod J. Rosenstein, his counterpart in Maryland — to take over direction of existing investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, elevating the stature of the cases but not giving them any special powers.

Earlier Friday, President Obama declared that the White House had not been behind the recent leaks and vowed to prosecute the people responsible for disclosing classified information if they could be identified.

“Since I’ve been in office, my attitude has been zero tolerance for these kinds of leaks and speculation,” Mr. Obama said at a news conference. “Now we have mechanisms in place where, if we can root out folks who have leaked, they will suffer consequences. In some case, it’s criminal. These are criminal acts when they release information like this. And we will conduct thorough investigations, as we have in the past.”

The Obama administration has already compiled an aggressive record of prosecuting people accused of leaking national security secrets. It has brought six such cases, compared with three under all previous presidents combined.

The recent disclosures included the revelation that a plot by the Yemen branch of Al Qaeda to bomb an airliner had been foiled because of penetration by a double agent, details about the joint American-Israeli computer virus called Stuxnet that sabotaged Iran’s nuclear centrifuges, and an account of Mr. Obama’s role in approving a “kill list” of terrorism suspects for drone strikes.

They include reports published by The New York Times, The Associated Press, Newsweek and other news media outlets, some of which were derived from recently published books by reporters for The Times and Newsweek.

They followed previous disclosures about the operation that located and killed Osama bin Laden, both in the aftermath of the raid and then again around its anniversary this spring.

The Justice Department did not say which leaks in particular were now under investigation, apparently because doing so would implicitly confirm that certain reports contained accurate classified information.

Some Republicans have accused the White House of risking national security for political gain by deliberately disclosing secret information that makes Mr. Obama look tough — even as it prosecutes lower-level current and former officials for other leaks that did not confer any political advantage.

“It is difficult to escape the conclusion that these recent leaks of highly classified information, all of which have the effect of making the president look strong and decisive on national security in the middle of his re-election campaign, have a deeper political motivation,” said Senator John McCain of Arizona, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee and Mr. Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign opponent, this week.

But Mr. Obama called such accusations wrong.

“The notion that my White House would purposefully release classified national security information is offensive,” he said, adding: “But as I think has been indicated from these articles, whether or not the information they’ve received is true, the writers of these articles have all stated unequivocally that they didn’t come from this White House, and that’s not how we operate.”

While still accountable to the attorney general, a special counsel has greater day-to-day independence. During the Bush administration, for example, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, the United States attorney in Chicago, was appointed special counsel to investigate the disclosure of the identity of Valerie Plame Wilson, a Central Intelligence Agency operative, and eventually charged Vice President Dick Cheney’s top aide, I. Lewis Libby Jr., with perjury.

While the two prosecutors are not special counsels, Mr. Holder said he had “every confidence in their abilities to doggedly follow the facts and the evidence in the pursuit of justice wherever it leads.”

But several Republican lawmakers said they were not satisfied. In a joint statement, for example, Mr. McCain and Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said, “This investigation involves some of the most serious breaches of national security in recent memory and any investigation must be done in a manner free and clear of political considerations. The recent decision of the attorney general falls far short of what is needed and is not an adequate substitute for an outside special counsel.”

Mr. Rosenstein was appointed in 2005 by President George W. Bush after holding several positions in the Justice Department under administrations of both parties; he also worked for the office of Kenneth W. Starr, the independent counsel who investigated the Whitewater affair during the Clinton administration. Mr. Machen was appointed in 2010 by Mr. Obama, after working as a partner at the WilmerHale law firm and serving as a career prosecutor in the 1990s.

In comments to several news outlets earlier this week, Dean Baquet, managing editor of The Times, said the newspaper’s reporters had come by the information through “tons and tons of reporting” over the course of months, not handouts. He also said the newspaper had told officials about its findings ahead of their publication and withheld some technical details about the Stuxnet operation at their request.

On Friday, Danielle Rhoades Ha, a spokeswoman for The Times, said the newspaper had nothing further to say.

“We do not discuss sourcing in articles,” she said.

A parade of beauty queens in swimsuits and evening gowns are competing to become the next Miss USA in Las Vegas.

Miss USA 2011 Alyssa Campanella will crown her successor during the competition at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip Sunday night.

The judge’s panel includes Chef Cat Cora, TV personality Arsenio Hall, singer Joe Jonas and reality TV star Rob Kardashian. The show will also feature performances from Akon and Cobra Starship. Andy Cohen and Giuliana Rancic are stepping in to host.

The pageant has three competitions: swimsuit, evening gown and interview question. Contestants from 50 states and the District of Columbia will be whittled to 15 after the show’s opening number based on competitions and interviews during the week before the telecast.

The winner will represent the United States at the 61st Miss Universe pageant. An American has not been named Miss Universe since Brook Lee won the title in 1997.

The Miss Universe Organization is co-owned by NBC and Donald Trump. The competition is not affiliated with the Miss America pageant.

The mother and father of six children who died in a house fire in Derby have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Mick Philpott, 55, and his wife Mairead, 31, were arrested in Derby on Tuesday and are due to be questioned.

Jade Philpott, 10, and brothers John, nine, Jack, eight, Jessie, six and Jayden, five, died in the house fire on Victory Road on 11 May.

Another brother, Duwayne, 13, died three days later in hospital.

All six children were asleep upstairs when the fire began in the early hours.

Derbyshire Police said petrol was used to start the fire which was believed to have begun below the house’s letterbox.

Five days after the attack Mr and Mrs Philpott held a brief press conference and thanked those who tried to rescue the children and members of the local community for their support.

Speaking after the arrests, Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill said: “In view of the arrests, I would urge anyone who may have been holding back, not felt comfortable to voice their concerns or not had the confidence, to do so now.

“The latest arrests are just one step further in the investigation. It is absolutely vital that if you know anything you think could help us, come forward now, do not wait any longer.

“What we need to do now is carefully take our time, question the two individuals concerned and piece it together with everything else we know to date.”

Chief Constable Steve Cotterill: “We still need the support of the public out there”

ACC Cotterill added police had increased their presence again on Victory Road and a mobile police station would return to the area.

He also confirmed forensic examination of the scene was ongoing and the police cordon was unlikely to be lifted in the near future.

Large numbers of floral tributes left outside the house have now been removed by officers and placed in a nearby church.

The family attracted attention in 2006 when Mr Philpott asked the council for a larger house to accommodate his wife, girlfriend and 14 children.

In 2007, former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe spent a week living with the family as part of an ITV documentary and Mr Philpott also appeared on the Jeremy Kyle Show.

On 11 May, a 38-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of murder. They were both released without charge the following day.

The estranged partner of a young mother who was stabbed to death along with her parents at their home in Aylmer, Que., has been charged with first-degree murder Friday, Gatineau police say.

Shakti Ramsurrun, 28, was formally charged at a Gatineau courthouse Friday with first-degree murder in the deaths of Anne-Katherine Powers 21, her mother Louise LeBoeuf, 63, and LeBoeuf’s partner Claude Lévesque, 58.

All three were stabbed to death Thursday, according to police.

Police and neighbours said the accused, the three victims and a young child lived in a suburban home at 64 Félix-Leclerc Street, where the bodies were found.

Neighbours said the older couple operated a bed and breakfast at the home.

The victim’s friend, Virginia Lamaute, said Powers and Ramsurrun met on a Caribbean cruise just over two years ago.

Lamaute said the couple married and had a baby together in Mauritius, a small island off the east coast of Africa where the husband is from. She had moved back to Aylmer before him and he had followed by moving to Canada six months ago.

Relationship was ending, friend says

The relationship had recently turned sour and Powers wanted to separate, added Lamaute, but the couple still lived together in the home.

Police spokesman Const. Pierre Lanthier said Ramsurrun became a permanent resident of Canada in 2011. Lanthier referred to Ramsurrun as an ex-boyfriend, not a husband.

He said Ramsurrun was not known to police and that police had never been called to the home for any prior incident.

Ramsurrun was found soon after police arrived at the scene. He was arrested while holding his 15-month-old child at the nearby Rivermead Golf Club where he worked.

Police say he did not resist arrest and was questioned Friday. The child is now in the custody of children’s protection services and was not harmed.

Home, golf course searched

On Thursday, Gatineau police were called to the scene at 1:15 p.m. ET, a home near the golf club, after receiving a 911 call. Police would not say who the call came from.

Police remained at the crime scene Friday to search for evidence in the triple homicide.

Police appeared to remove a body from the home before cordoning off the area. Police also cordoned off a second area at an abandoned van at the Rivermead Golf Club course parking lot, less than a kilometre from the home. The van was packed in the back with multiple items, including children’s toys.

Police were also searching in bushes behind the home and in neighbours’ yards for evidence.

An autopsy on the three bodies is also scheduled for this morning and police remain at the crime scene.

Ramsurrun was remanded into custody. Court officials will meet May 31 to determine his next court date.

Here’s today’s Facebook bankshot: If Sheryl Sandberg becomes a billionaire today, and has already said she in effect would like to save the world, will her next move be to Washington in a high position in the Obama administration.

A protege of former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers, Sandberg, the chief operating officer for Facebook, could be a ready replacement for the current Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who has said he will leave his post after the November election.

Sandberg may reveal at least some of her outlook on the future on May 23, when she is scheduled to be the commencement speaker at the Harvard Business School.

Sandberg, 42, was lured to Facebook from Google in 2008. She owns 27 million shares, including 25 million restricted stock units that have vested. So that alone will be worth more than $1 billion if the stock merely stays at the $38 a share price from last night when trading begins. Add to that another 14 million unvested shares, and as former Senator Everett Dirksen said so well, that’s real money.

In many ways Victoria Grant is a typical 12-year-old. The straight-A, Grade 6 student from Cambridge, Ont., likes soccer, playing the piano and watching Survivor, but when it comes to international finance, she’s all business.

It started when Grant won a contest at her school with a five-minute speech in which she says “banks and the government have colluded to financially enslave the people of Canada.”

Her message is that the government should borrow directly from the Bank of Canada instead of from private banks that charge high interest.

Her articulate, punchy speech took third place at a speaking conference in Toronto. Her father posted a video of her speech online which has led to speaking engagements in Philadelphia and Montreal.

Macro economics may not be a common discussion topic among 12-year-olds but in an interview with CBC News, Grant said she and her family regularly grapple with the world’s problems around the dinner table. Her mother Marcia, who is also her teacher, and her two younger brothers also like to join in the debate.

“Sometimes after dinner we’ll go down to our living room and write stuff out on the white board and watch YouTube videos about it,” she said. “It’s interesting to hear about these things and know what’s going on in the world.

“I’m trying to get people to notice that the government is doing something wrong to us and we need to change what’s happening,” she said.

Victoria’s father Zane acknowledges that some skeptics might feel the opinions expressed in his daughter’s speech are not entirely her own. Victoria said she wrote the speech while her parents helped edit it.

“It’s a combination of both [of us],” said Zane, a project manager for Research in Motion. “There’s no doubt she’s been affected by my opinions. I’m teaching them how to think critically, how to ask questions. You can’t just trust people, you have to dig in and find out yourself and that’s what I’m trying to get my children to do. I hope one day they challenge me.

“We have never forced our daughter to do any of this,” he said. “Do I have all the answers? No, I’m still learning with our family.”

Speech stirs debate

One lesson Grant has learned is that bold speeches often spark intense debate.

Walid Hejazi, a professor of international business and a banking expert at the Rotman School of Management, has seen Grant’s speech on-line. And while he was impressed with her delivery, he said what she’s arguing for has been tried by countries in the past and leads to hyperinflation.

“When governments simply print money, simply take money from the central bank and spend it, what you end up with is higher inflation and lower output growth,” he said. “If it were that simple, why wouldn’t every government in the world simply go out and print money?”

Victoria said skeptics and those who post negative comments beside her video don’t bother her. For her it’s about taking a stand, learning about the issues and sparking debate. It’s something she vows to continue doing.

“If they disagree with me, that’s their opinion. I stand with my opinion, they stand with theirs.”

A Pennsylvania couple has found themselves in an all-too-familiar situation this week when a car crashed into their home for the fourth time, the third time in the past six months.

Sonya and Wade Schenewolf, of Easton, Penn., were getting ready for their day on Tuesday morning when they heard a loud booming sound from outside. Unfortunately, they knew what it was before going outside. A car had hit their house, again–the third time that’s happened in just the last six months.

“My house got hit in December, my house got hit in March and my house got hit in May,” Sonya Schenewolf said with disbelief. “And a year before that, my car and my garage got hit.”

She has had serious damage to her garage, car and front porch from the various accidents.

“This is a 30 miles per hour zone. We do live on a curve and our house is close to the road, but, recently, the township put in a two-lane bridge directly across from my house,” she said. “If you come across that bridge and you don’t stop, you’re in my house.”

Schenewolf said Tuesday’s accident was caused by a speeding driver. She believes he was going approximately 65 mph in the 30 mph zone.

“He was actually airborne when he hit,” she said. The driver is in the hospital with injuries, but is expected to make a full recovery, according to Schenewolf.

The couple has wanted to put a boulder in front of their house to prevent accidents from damaging their home, but they said they have been told that such an obstacle would make them liable for any damage to a rogue driver.

“The thing that’s frustrating is that I was told by a few of the rescue workers that my car, which was parked there and is totaled, is what saved [the driver’s] life,” she said, adding that a boulder would have saved him without wrecking her car.

Tuesday’s accident happened just 15 minutes before Wade Schenewolf was about to head to his car in the driveway to leave for work.

“If we would have been in his vehicle, he would have been killed,” his wife said.

She estimates that she has $40,000 in property damages and the man who hit the house has $5000 in property damage coverage.

The couple plans to go to township officials to fight for a boulder.

“I want a pretty heavy duty one,” Schenewolf said. “A truck would have to bring it in. It has to be significant to slow a car down.”

ONE of WA’s top young hockey players has died after accidentally being hit in the head during a State League match at Curtin University.

The Australian hockey community is in shock following the tragic death of 24-year-old Lizzie Watkins in a freak accident during the match late yesterday.

The elite 24-year-old died from fatal head injuries after a ball deflected off her own stick and hit her in the back of the head during a game at Curtin University yesterday.

The young woman was a defender for North Coast Raiders and was part of the team playing the Victoria Park Panthers yesterday.

She fell to the ground unconscious when she was hit midway through the first half of the game.

Ms Watkins’ sister Catherine Carrol was playing alongside her and rushed to her side.

People at the scene attempted to revive Ms Watkins, who was breathing when an amulance arrived.

She died on the way to hospital.

Sad day for our sport – Hockey Australia

Hockey Australia Chief Executive Mark Anderson said Sunday was a very sad day for the sport.

“On behalf of the entire hockey community I would like to express our support and sympathies to the Watkins family at this very sad time. Our thoughts extend to all involved at the North Coast Raiders Hockey Club,” he said.

“Hockey is a sport that is known for its strong sense of community. I know that members of our two national teams and players involved at all levels of our sport are saddened by this tragic event.

“The Kookaburras wore black arm bands in the final of the London VISA International Invitational Hockey Tournament overnight at Olympic Park out of respect for Lizzie and her family.

”I know that our community both nationally and particularly in Western Australia will pull together to provide as much support as possible to all involved.”

Hockey WA are working closely with their community and the North Coast Raiders Hockey Club to ensure all possible support is provided to those involved in the accident.

Her team, The North Coast Raiders posted on their Facebook page: “Raiders has today lost a true Stalwart of the club. Lizzie Watkins was playing the game she loved and wore the Raiders colours with pride. She will be greatly missed. R.I.P. Lizzie”

Another friend posted this message: “You had one of the most amazing infectious smiles ever; your witty sense of humour, your presence would fill the room with joy. I have to keep pinching myself hoping this is a horrible nightmare that is just going to go away.

“The skills you taught me as a starting out at hockey player I will forever be grateful for. The memories I have of you Lizzie I will forever hold close to my heart. Your family is one of the most amazing families I have ever met and my heart is breaking for them all.

Hockey WA has launched an investigation.

Raiders president Craig Vallipuram said last night Ms Watkins was a great girl, and everyone was in deep shock.

“It was a terrible and tragic incident and one which has devastated everyone who knew her.”

Ms Watkins was a student at Murdoch University and completed her upper schooling at St Mary’s Anglican Girls School in Karrinyup.

In 2010 she opened Meg and Wally, a West Leederville fashion boutique with her sister.

Elite Aussie teams mourn shock death

News of Ms Watkins’ shock death swept through the Australian hockey scene, the Kookaburras squad hearing the news as they were preparing for the final of a test event against Germany in London.

They wore black armbands in the 2-5 loss.

The world’s number one player WA’s Jamie Dwyer, rested from the game but with the squad in London, tweeted: “All the Kookaburras thoughts are with the Watkins family after the devastating news today. Such a sad day in the hockey world.”

The Hockeyroos, who are in the middle of a training block in Perth, were saddened by the incident, many sharing their condolences.

“Thoughts and prayers are with the Watkins family and friends and with all the raiders girls, very sad day in the hockey community,” tweeted Hockeyroos star Casey Eastham.

Fellow Hockeyroo Anna Flanagan tweeted: “Lizzie Watkins, you are in our thoughts and prayers. Our heart goes out to your family at this terrible time.”

European Central Bank officials voted Thursday to hold interest rates steady, even as the euro area economy slides towards recession. But ECB president Mario Draghi appeared to hint that there could be rate cuts in the future.

In a widely expected move, the ECB left its main overnight lending rate at 1%, a level the bank has maintained since late last year.

The Governing Council of the Frankfurt-based ECB met in Barcelona as the economic outlook in the eurozone has deteriorated.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Draghi said the ECB’s policies remain “accommodative” in light of the economic data from the first quarter. But he acknowledged that more recent economic indicators highlight the uncertain outlook for the eurozone.

Draghi noted that economic activity was “stabilizing” in the first quarter but that more recent data shows “uncertainty prevailing.”

While he stressed that interest rates are very low and liquidity is abundant, Draghi said several times that “any exit strategy remains premature.” ECB policymakers will be “clearer in our assessment” at the council’s next policy meeting in June, he added.

“The ECB does appear to be leaving the door open to an eventual further interest rate cut,” said Howard Archer, chief UK and European economist at IHS Global Insight.

But monetary policymakers will probably not act until economic conditions have deteriorated further, according to Archer. “Unfortunately that could very well happen,” he added.

Europe: ‘Dark clouds on the horizon’

Meanwhile, the ECB is under pressure to intervene in financial markets as investors have been rattled by renewed concerns about the euro debt crisis.

In response to a question on the ECB’s controversial bond buying program, Draghi simply said the so-called securities market program, under which the ECB purchased billions of euros worth of government debt last year, is “an important instrument.”

But he stressed that eurozone governments still need to reduce debt and take steps to increase economic competitiveness.

“These mechanisms are useful, but they cannot replace either fiscal consolidation or structural reforms as the way to go back to stability,” said Draghi.

The ECB has taken unprecedented steps to support the economy.

In two separate operations, the ECB funneled more than 1 trillion euros worth of ultra low-cost loans into the banking system starting late last year. The two long-term refinancing operations, or LTROs, helped prevent a credit crunch in the banking system.

The LTROs also appeared to drive down borrowing costs for troubled euro area governments including Italy and Spain. But the effects of the lending program have waned and some investors are now calling for the ECB to do more.

Spain, for example, confirmed earlier this week that it officially slipped back into recession in the first quarter. Meanwhile, unemployment in the 17-nations that use the euro edged up to 10.9% in March — the highest level since the common currency was introduced in 1999.

In addition to Spain, several other eurozone economies already struggling with recession including Italy, Ireland, Greece and Portugal.

Eurozone unemployment hits record 10.9%

Overall, the eurozone economy is widely expected to suffer a mild recession this year as austerity — budget cuts and tax hikes — take a toll on growth.

The bleak economic climate has raised concerns that austerity is doing more harm than good, and a growing number of policymakers have been calling for reforms to boost economic growth.

For his part, Draghi seemed to suggest that policymakers need to do both.

“We have to put growth back at center of agenda without any contradiction to the need to preserver in fiscal consolidation,” said Draghi.

He supported calls for a “growth pact” to compliment the “fiscal pact” that euro area leaders signed late last year.

Draghi said the growth pact should emphasize polices aimed at opening up eurozone labor and product markets to increased competition. At the same time, Draghi said targeted spending on infrastructure projects will help create jobs in the public sector.

“We need a common European discipline in doing these reforms,” he said.

MI6 officer Gareth Williams was “on the balance of probabilities” unlawfully killed, coroner Fiona Wilcox has said.

In a narrative verdict, she said it was unlikely he got into the bag his body was found in by himself, but doubted his death would ever be explained.

The 31-year-old code-breaker from Anglesey was found at his central London flat in August 2010.

Police say the investigation remains open and officers would be re-examining evidence gathered.

The naked body of Mr Williams was found padlocked in a red sports holdall in the bath of his home.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Martin Hewitt said: “We are already undertaking actions in order to develop existing DNA profiles, to trace unidentified individuals who may have information about Gareth’s death and to further develop analysis of telephone communications.”

Speaking outside Westminster Coroner’s Court after the inquest, Det Ch Insp Jackie Sebire, who is leading the inquiry, said Scotland Yard “will now refocus and actively pursue all the evidence heard and all the new lines of inquiry.

“His naked body was found in the most suspicious of circumstances. It’s highly likely that a third party was involved in Gareth’s death and I urge anyone who knows Gareth and who had contact with him to search their conscience and come forward with any information.”

Family solicitor Robyn Williams said their “grief is exacerbated by the failure of his employers… to take even the most basic inquiries about his whereabouts and welfare”.

By the time police were alerted to the code-breaker’s disappearance on 23 August 2010, he had not been at work for a week and there was extensive decomposition of his body.

MI6 chief Sir John Sawers apologised “unreservedly” to Mr Williams’ family for its “failure to act more swiftly”.

“The lessons have been learned, in particular the responsibility of all staff to report unaccounted staff absences,” he said in a statement.

Responding to the family’s criticism an MI6 spokesman said: “We fully co-operated with the police and will continue to do so during the on-going investigation. We gave all the evidence to the police when they wanted it. At no time did we withhold any evidence.”

In her summing up, the coroner said: “Most of the fundamental questions in relation to how Gareth died remain unanswered.”

But, she said, she was “satisfied so that I’m sure that a third party moved the bag containing Gareth into the bath” where his body was found.

“The cause of his death was unnatural and likely to have been criminally mediated,” she added.

“I am therefore satisfied that on the balance of probabilities that Gareth was killed unlawfully.”

The coroner also criticised the Met’s SO15 counter-terror branch for the way it handled Mr Williams’ work phone and other exhibits. She said the evidence of his line manager on why the absence was not reported sooner “begins to stretch bounds of credibility”.

Mr Williams’ sister revealed to the inquest that Mr Williams was unhappy living in London and had complained to family of “friction” at the intelligence agency.

And his family have said they believe he may have been killed by an agent “specialising in the dark arts of the secret services”.

Dr Wilcox said that while there was no evidence to suggest he died at the hands of MI6 “it is still a legitimate line of inquiry”.

She said “it would appear that many agencies fell short”.

During the investigation Scotland Yard were not able to speak to Mr Williams’ MI6 colleagues directly.

The coroner also identified breakdowns in communication by her own office in ordering a second post-mortem examination, a DNA mix-up by forensics and the late submission of evidence by MI6 to police.

But she added that “taking all these shortfalls together, I am satisfied that the evidence is reliable”.

‘Risk assessor’

Dr Wilcox said the “highly unusual circumstances” of Mr Williams’ death had immediately raised the possibility of foul play however, which had prompted “endless speculation”.

On Mr Williams’ accessing of bondage websites, she said: “Clearly experimenting with bondage would involve danger.”

But the coroner ruled his interest in bondage and drag queens did not have any bearing on his death, and she questioned whether leaks about his private life to the press “was an attempt by some third party to manipulate the evidence”.

Dr Wilcox said no indication of a suicidal intent had been presented.

Bag experts have said even Harry Houdini would have struggled to lock himself in the bag.

Dr Wilcox said it was extremely unlikely Mr Williams found a technique to lock and get out of the bag himself, but she could not rule it out. She suggested if Mr Williams had locked himself into the bag he would have taken a knife with him, as he was a “risk assessor”.

The lack of hand and footprints in the bathroom of his Pimlico flat was “significant”, Dr Wilcox added.

The inquest heard from three pathologists who had conducted post-mortem examinations on Mr Williams and who had been unable to reach a firm conclusion on cause of death. But they say poisoning and asphyxiation are the most likely reasons.

Dr Wilcox said she decided to deliver a narrative verdict as an open verdict would not do justice to the case.

A narrative verdict has been an option for coroners in England and Wales since 2004 and is where the circumstances of a death are recorded without attributing the cause to a named individual.
