DE, New York Giants: He didn’t have the kind of year the Giants hoped he’d have. He looked heavy and wasn’t as explosive. But he remains as talented a pass rusher as there is in the game.

If Italian designer Roberto Cavalli with his penchant for animal prints were to marry a colourful Disney character, then their home would look something like the sets of ‘Lazy Lad’, the promotional song for upcoming Bollywood film ‘Ghanchakkar’.

tabloid! jetted down to Mumbai recently to witness first hand the making of the song featuring Bollywood’s pride Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi.

The moment we were ushered into the shooting studio, we immediately wished we could trade our passport in for a pair of sunglasses: The giant room, with industrial panelling, was dark except for the psychedelic living room on a stage. A peek inside revealed walls that were painted bright green. One side even had an illuminated sign that read ‘Baby’ and there was a yellow leopard dotted couch with matching curtains hung behind it. Silk cushions that had never been introduced to Martha Stewart, America’s queen of classy decor, were thrown carelessly on the animal-printed couch. A lamp shade with an orange fur cover, a well-lit fish tank with some bright-coloured fish and a white bird cage with bird-shaped wind chimes dotted the room. This was kitsch on adrenaline.

Naturally, the owners of that living room weren’t any less quirky. The moment Balan — wearing a shiny black top with embossed gigantic pink lips emblazoned on her bosom walked in with a pair of over-sized pink sunglasses perched on her head — her world began to make more sense to me. Her dress sense was as atrocious as her pad.

“I’m just loving this. It’s outrageous, isn’t it?” said Balan with a loud laugh.

In the comedy produced by UTV Motion Pictures and directed by Rajkumar Gupta of the dark ‘No One Killed Jessica’ fame, Balan plays a loud, garish Punjabi housewife Neetu Bhatia. It’s a tale of a couple who were ex-cons. They seemed reformed, but the big question is whether there’s more to them than meets the eye.

“We all know people around us who just take bling and outlandish to another level. They are not scared what to wear, they are not scared whether it’s right or wrong. They just do it. She may come across as quirky and mad, but she doesn’t care and that’s what makes her so enduring,” said Balan.

Her first shot for the morning seemed relatively simple. She enters the living room from a day of shopping, finds her husband Sanju (Hashmi) in slob mode watching brain-numbing television. She reprimands him song style and dunks the remote in the fish tank. It was a 52-second sequence, but it took over 90 minutes to nail that scene— which I am told was good timing.

“Everything you see today is exaggerated,” said Hashmi in his trailer van as he waited for his shot to be set up. “‘Lazy Lad’ is Vidya’s song and we are shooting it at a revamped, louder version of the house that we have shot the film in. I play the lazy lad in it and Vidya plays my wife. She wears the pants in our relationship.”

This is Hashmi’s second project with Balan after their 2011 blockbuster ‘The Dirty Picture’. In the award-winning film, in which Hashmi played an eccentric filmmaker Abraham, his tumultuous relationship with a bold actress named Silk played by Balan did not have a fairytale ending.

“In ‘The Dirty Picture’, we had a limited screen time for about 30 minutes. But there was a lot of chemistry. Many said that a happy ending between Abraham and Silk together would have been nice. Remember, we were hurling abuses at each other for most part. This time around, we are still hurling abuses at each other. But our marriage in ‘Ghanchakkar’ is different from what you have seen in films,” said Hashmi.

Everything about ‘Ghanchakkar’, releasing in the UAE on June 27, screams unconventional. For once, the Bollywood heroine is not perfectly sculpted and dolled up in tasteful designer creations. There are no pastel saris draped around waif-like bodies or immaculately styled hair in sight.

“The best part about Neetu is that is she is a full-bodied Punjabi woman. She believes she’s the best that the world has to offer. She’s proud about her cooking, her body and doesn’t stop at anything to get what she wants. I think every woman should be like her,” said Balan.

“She’s the kind of woman who goes through women’s magazines and cuts out pictures of clothes she likes. Then she will head to the market to buy similar fabrics and ask the tailor for her own interpretation of it. She has limited exposure but she doesn’t take that into account. She lives life on her own terms,” said Balan.

Her last sentence holds a mirror to Balan’s Bollywood career trajectory. In 2005, she made her debut with the romance ‘Parineeta’. In the period romance, she played a beautiful, coy lady who was in love with her neighbour. However, she didn’t get stuck in that traditional Bollywood heroine mould. In 2009, she came back with a bang in the acclaimed feature film ‘Paa’, where she played a mother to an ill child and topped up her account with hits such as ‘The Dirty Picture’ and the thriller ‘Kahaani’.

The going was mostly good, even though she had to battle criticisms regarding her weight and fashion choices. But Balan didn’t let any of the negatives bog her down and even went on to be a part of this year’s Cannes film festival jury joining the likes of Steven Spielberg and Nicole Kidman. The going has been particularly good on her personal front too. In December 2012, she married UTV Motion Pictures honcho Siddharth Roy Kapur and ‘Ghanchakkar’ will be her first major release after her marriage, if you discount the song cameos in ‘Bombay Talkies’.

“Nothing has changed much after marriage. Luckily for me, Siddharth is very supportive. He says there’s no need to be superhuman. He keeps telling me ‘Don’t go about doing this, that and the other. You are in the middle of the film, so just focus on that.’ So I am enjoying every minute of my work,” said Balan.

It was clear that Balan took her work seriously. In the four hours we spent together, she was constantly trying to improve her act. From re-takes to getting her Punjabi accent right in the song, Balan was game for pretty much anything.

“‘Lazy Lad’ is over-the-top and funny. But I am not taking it any less seriously because it’s comic video. I love rehearsals and re-takes because I am fully sure of what I am doing.”

FIVE MINUTES WITH... ‘Lazy Lad’ art director Sukant Panagrahi who has worked in blockbusters including ‘Chak De! India’.

Q: What was the brief given to you for ‘Lazy Lad’?

A: I was told that ‘Lazy Lad’ is going to be a naughty song. It has a Punjabi lady right in the midst of it all. So we wanted to make it as colourful as we could. Today, even television serials are going bold and colourful, we wanted to loud and bold colours to a whole new level.

Q: How long did you take to create this pad?

A: It took us four days to get the sets ready. But we did a lot of hunting for the stuff for the house. It was mostly sourced from Mumbai. You see that yellow couch, it was earlier a leather couch and we got it re-upholstered in leopard print fabric, We mixed old and new and our budget was around Rs1 million (Dh64,838)

QUOTE UNQUOTE

“Ghanchakkar’ is a far cry from ‘The Dirty Picture’. This is the other end of the spectrum. For the first time, I am doing an all-out comedy,” said Balan.

DID YOU KNOW?

They say an actor spends most of his life in his trailer van and it’s almost a second home to them. It also gives us a peek into their personality. tabloid!discovered that Balan’s trailer van for ‘Lazy Lad’ shoot was feminine. The decor was cottage chic with floral motifs all over and done up in pastel shades. Balan even let us on in a secret.

“I am not much of a cook, but I make my own bed even today. Also, I like to arrange clothes in my wardrobe,” said Balan.

DON’T MISS IT:

The video for ‘Lazy Lad’ is out now. Ghanchakkar releases in the UAE on June 27

The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly had been enamored with Lane Johnson for some time leading up to the draft. His athletic prowess — remember, he played quarterback and tight end in junior college — made him an ideal candidate for the wide-open, spread offense that Chip Kelly figures to bring to the NFL this year.

And after the Dolphins decided to nab Dion Jordan, not Johnson, after trading up for No. 3, the Eagles pounced.

This is the most speculative of the three offensive tackle picks so far, as Johnson has much less experience playing that position than either Eric Fisher or Luke Joeckel. But at 6-foot-6 and just north of 300 pounds (up a staggering 80 pounds from his JUCO days), Johnson has the physical gifts to be productive at the next level.

The Eagles’ offensive line was depleted by injuries last season. Johnson gives them another standout option up front, and one that will be able to get out in space and help Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and the Eagles’ playmakers.

Grade: A-minus. Kelly will try to work his offense around the pieces he has, but adding even more athleticism to an already athletic group will make the transition that much easier.

Kevin Bacon is one of the foremost actors of his generation. His talent for balancing starring roles with powerful supporting characters on both film and stage has allowed him to build a varied and critically acclaimed body of work.

With the support of his parents, Bacon left his native Philadelphia to become the youngest student at Circle in the Square Theatre in New York, where he studied until he made his film debut as “Chip” in “National Lampoon’s Animal House.” This led to roles in “Diner” and “Footloose,” the latter of which propelled him to stardom.

Bacon has proven his talents in a wide range of film genres from action thrillers to romantic comedies to heavy dramas, and even the occasional musical. Just some of Bacon’s film credits include John Hughes’ “She’s Having a Baby,” “The Big Picture,” “Tremors,” “Flatliners,” Oliver Stone’s “JFK,” Rob Reiner’s “A Few Good Men,” “The River Wild” (Golden Globe Award nomination), “Murder in the First” (Best Actor by The Broadcast Film Critics Association and Best Supporting Actor nominations by The Screen Actors Guild and the London Film Critics Circle), Ron Howard’s award-winning “Apollo 13” and “Balto.”

Additional film credits include Barry Levinson’s “Sleepers,” with Brad Pitt and Robert De Niro; “Picture Perfect,” with Jennifer Aniston; “Telling Lies in America”; “Wild Things”; David Koepp’s “Stir of Echoes”; the sleeper hit “My Dog Skip”; “Hollow Man”; “Trapped,” with Charlize Theron; Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River” (Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Picture); “Beauty Shop”; Atom Egoyan’s “Where the Truth Lies”; “The Air I Breathe”; “Death Sentence”; “Rails & Ties”; “My One and Only,” with Renée Zellweger; James Gunn’s “Super”; and “Frost/Nixon,” which reunited him with “Apollo 13” director Ron Howard.

In 2004, Bacon starred in “The Woodsman,” a compelling drama that premiered to critical acclaim at the Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals, and for which Bacon received an IFP Spirit Award nomination. Most recently, Bacon was seen on the big screen alongside Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell in “Crazy, Stupid, Love.,” and as the villainous “Sebastian Shaw” in director Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class.” Up next, Bacon stars in “Jayne Mansfield’s Car,” by director Billy Bob Thornton; and in the action-comedy “R.I.P.D.,” opposite Ryan Reynolds.

In 2009, Bacon starred in the cable movie “Taking Chance,” for which he earned a Golden Globe Award and a SAG Award. Also, he recently appeared in an episode of the cable comedy “Bored To Death,” in which he played a hilariously exaggerated version of himself.

Bacon’s other television credits include the public television staging of Lanford Wilson’s play, “Lemon Sky,” a production that teamed him with his then-future wife Kyra Sedgwick. Additional television credits include the “The Gift” and the cable film “Enormous Changes at the Last Minute.”

In 1996, Bacon made his directorial debut with “Losing Chase,” starring Sedgwick, Beau Bridges and Helen Mirren. “Losing Chase” was honored with three Golden Globe Award nominations, and Mirren won a Golden Globe Award for her performance. Bacon directed his second film, “Loverboy,” which he also produced. Bacon’s most recent project as director has been for several episodes of Sedgwick’s hit show “The Closer.”

In addition to his film and television credits, Bacon’s stage work includes such Off-Broadway productions as “Album,” “Poor Little Lambs” and “Getting Out.” He made his Broadway debut in 1983 with Sean Penn in “Slab Boys,” and starred in the 1986 production of Joe Orton’s “Loot.” He also starred in Theresa Rebeck’s comedy “Spike Heels.” In 2002, he starred in the one-man show “An Almost Holy Picture,” written by Heather McDonald.

Bacon was most recently seen onstage in the celebrated Los Angeles reading of Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black’s play, “8.” The reading was a benefit for the American Foundation for Equal Rights and Broadway Impact, in order to raise funds to overturn California’s Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage. Bacon starred alongside George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Martin Sheen, Jane Lynch, John C. Reilly and many others.

With his musician brother Michael, Bacon is the other half of The Bacon Brothers, a successful band with a sound that he describes as “Forosoco” (which is the title of their first album) – Folk, Rock, Soul and Country. Already highly regarded and hugely successful on the national club circuit, they have recorded six CD’s and a concert DVD.

At the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, Bacon launched SixDegrees.org, a web site that builds on the popularity of the “small world phenomenon” to create a charitable social network and to inspire giving to charities online. He started the network with other celebrities by highlighting their favorite charities, and he encourages everyone to be celebrities for their own causes by joining the Six Degrees movement. To date, the site has succeeded in raising nearly four million dollars for charities around the world.

Bacon received the 2010 Joel Siegel Award from the Broadcast Film Critics Association in recognition of his outstanding film career and his charitable work with SixDegrees.org. In 2000, the Film Society of Lincoln Center honored Bacon for his extraordinary career in the film industry.

Bacon resides in New York City.

New Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang gestures as he attends his first press conference after the closing session of the National People's Congress at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Sunday.

March 17, 2013                3:17 am

Does China have a growing image problem in the world?

Some say yes, pointing to fears that China may threaten global peace as it spars with neighbors over contested territories or as an alleged source of large-scale cyberattacks on other nations. Another big issue: fear of environmental disaster as its large population and high-speed economic growth pollute at a pace that has, arguably, already overwhelmed the ecological balance at home and may damage the global environmental balance, too.

Li Keqiang, the country’s new prime minister, appeared to address these fears on Sunday at his first news conference since being appointed head of the government two days ago. Fittingly, if unfortunately, it was a severely polluted day, with smog carpeting the capital.

In Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, time was up at the end of the 107-minute news conference in which he spoke about a range of issues including the need to deepen reform, the economy and urbanization.

The moderator had called an end to questions. (The New York Times wasn’t invited to attend, so I watched on state TV, which broadcast the whole event.) Many overseas reporters hadn’t had a chance to ask a question, Mr. Li noted, adding, “I’d like to say a few more sentences.”

“Recently I’ve been looking a lot at reports on issues to do with China, of course most have been on the issues that international public opinion is paying attention to,” he said.

There were basically two: “One is worries whether China’s economy can develop sustainably,” he said, in a nod to environmental concerns.

“And another one is worries whether China’s development will rely on force and hegemony,” in a nod to concerns China is becoming increasingly aggressive.

“I think that both these problems can be dispelled,” he said (here I am translating from a Chinese transcript of his remarks).

“China has the conditions to preserve sustainable and healthy development and to continue to promote social progress,” said Mr. Li, a lively speaker who gestures with his hands when he talks and connects well with his audience, less stiff than other senior leaders.

“China has 1.3 billion people. To realize modernization we still have a very long road to walk. We need a lasting environment of international peace,” he said.

“Even if China develops to being formidable, we will not pursue hegemony,” he promised, using political jargon to mean tyrannical or bullying, “because we have been deeply affected by agonizing experiences in China’s recent and contemporary history. Do not impose on others what we do not desire ourselves. Do not do to others. This is an article of faith for Chinese people.”

But the special address to overseas journalists and, apparently, the world at large, contained a warning, too.

“Here I want to emphasize, walking the path of peaceful development is China’s firm and unshakable decision,” he said. “Protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity is also China’s unwavering determination. These two principles are not mutually exclusive, and are in line with protecting regional stability and principles of peace and order.”

Then, smiling broadly, he rose. His first news conference as prime minister was over.

Early signs are Mr. Li may prove a popular figure. He studied both law and the economy, is viewed as having risen on talent, not family connections, and as being pro-reform. Here are two representative comments from Sina Weibo, the country’s largest microblog:

“Li Keqiang doesn’t have an outstanding birth background but he was promoted by his ability. In a country like China, Li Keqiang’s promotion can be considered progress,” said a person with the name Pang Zai.

“Li Keqiang is very strong in both academics and politics. We need this kind of talent,” said Fengkuang Akira.

Bachelorette Revealed After Bachelor Finale: Desiree Hartsock Is the One!

March 11, 2013              11:45pm

Desiree Hartsock, who was sent home on season 17 of “The Bachelor,” is the new star of “The Bachelorette,” show host Chris Harrison announced Monday night.

Harrison made the announcement during “The Bachelor: After the Final Rose,” following the finale of “The Bachelor” in which Sean Lowe proposed to Catherine Giudici.

Giudici accepted the proposal, and the pair said they’ll marry soon. The wedding will be aired this summer on ABC, Harrison, who hosts “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” said.

Hartsock, a bridal stylist from Northglenn, Colo., was eliminated in the eighth week of “The Bachelor.” She was among 26 women vying to win Lowe’s heart, and made it to the final four women in the running, but she was sent packing after Lowe’s meeting with her family went wrong.

Hartsock’s brother accused Lowe of being a playboy and of not returning his sister’s feelings. Lowe denied the accusation.

Hartsock, who had been a fan favorite, told Harrison that she was grateful for the opportunity to find love, and believed in the process of finding it on the show.

Twenty-five men will compete for her hand when the new season of “The Bachelorette” debuts May 20.

“I know that it can happen and one of them will be hopefully my true love, as cliché as it sounds,” she said.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro is taking over leadership of Hugo Chavez’s political movement after the socialist leader died Tuesday at age 58 following a nearly two-year bout with cancer. Maduro now faces the daunting task of rallying support in a deeply divided country while maintaining unity within his party’s ranks.

Maduro decidedly lacks the vibrant personality that made Chavez a one-man political phenomenon in Venezuela, but he has the advantage of being Chavez’s hand-picked successor.

The mustachioed 50-year-old former bus driver won Chavez’s trust as a loyal spokesman who echoed the president’s stances. How Maduro will lead in Chavez’s absence remains to be seen, although he’s widely known as both a skilled negotiator and a leader who views upholding his mentor’s legacy as his personal crusade and responsibility.

One of the biggest tasks Maduro will likely face is attempting to hold together a diverse movement that includes radical leftists, moderates and many current and former military officers.

Analysts have speculated that differences might emerge between factions led by Maduro and Diosdado Cabello, the influential National Assembly president who is thought to wield power within the military. But thus far both men have denied such divisions and vowed to remain united.

After Chavez’s Dec. 11 cancer surgery, Maduro stepped up his public appearances to fill the void, providing regular updates on the president’s condition, calling for unity among allies and lambasting the opposition.

Maduro also showed how he could attempt to continue Chavez’s socialist-inspired project. Speaking at one December rally, he vowed in vague terms to maintain policies that have angered the country’s leading business federation, Fedecamaras, which was long at odds with the president.

“We aren’t going to give dollars to Fedecamaras. What we’re going to give them is pains, headaches with this Bolivarian Revolution,” Maduro shouted, his voice hoarse. “I swear to you … we’re never going to betray the people of Venezuela!”

Chavez’s deteriorating health led him on Dec. 8 to announce Maduro as his chosen successor. He said that if his illness prevented him from being sworn in on Jan. 10, government supporters should rally around Maduro and elect him president.

Maduro is expected to keep promoting programs such as free medical clinics staffed by Cuban doctors and subsidized food stores, which have endeared the president with the country’s vast numbers of poor. Maduro has vowed to block a return to past policies that he said had benefited the wealthy.

“Our people will never again see the bourgeoisie plundering this country,” Maduro said, adding, “Better to be dead than traitors to the people and to Chavez!”

That loyalty made Maduro a logical choice, political observers said.

“Maduro combines two characteristics that influenced Chavez in his decision to designate him as successor: first, his loyalty to the party leadership, and second, his positions in favor of popular measures,” such as social programs for the poor, said Steve Ellner, a political scientist at Venezuela’s University of Oriente.

In his youth, Maduro drove a bus for the Caracas Metro transit system and later became a union leader.

It’s unclear when Maduro and Chavez first met. But Chavez is thought to have first gotten to know Maduro in the 1980s, when Chavez was a lieutenant colonel and began a clandestine movement of disgruntled military officers that eventually carried out a failed coup attempt in 1992. Chavez was jailed on military rebellion charges and then released in 1994 when he was pardoned.

Maduro went on to become a leading member of Chavez’s nascent political movement, growing closer to the budding politician and also getting to know Cilia Flores, who is now attorney general and was Chavez’s defense attorney following his arrest for the 1992 coup attempt.

After Chavez was elected president in 1998, Maduro was selected to join a special assembly to draft a new constitution. He was later elected to the National Assembly and then became president of the legislature.

Maduro was named foreign minister in 2006 and oversaw international efforts such as consolidating the regional diplomatic blocs ALBA and Unasur, strengthening relations with countries such as Russia, Iran and China, and overseeing a rapprochement with U.S.-allied Colombia. He is thought to maintain close ties with Cuba’s government.

Maduro “is perceived by Chavez as a negotiator with diplomatic skills who could potentially gather the support of the different factions and keep it united in the difficult months ahead,” said Diego Moya-Ocampos, an analyst with the London-based consulting firm IHS Global Insight.

“Nevertheless, he is not necessarily perceived as such within all the top ranks of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela and the armed forces,” Moya-Ocampos added.

Jennifer McCoy, a political science professor at Georgia State University, described Maduro as an easygoing man who has shown a willingness to talk with government opponents.

“He’s always been someone who is easy to talk to,” said McCoy, director of the Americas program at the Carter Center, which helped the Organization of American States facilitate dialogue between the government and opposition after a 2002 coup that briefly ousted Chavez.

Maduro was always willing “to discuss the issues, and I think that’s really important going forward for Venezuela,” McCoy said.

Before Chavez underwent his latest operation in December, he explained why he had chosen Maduro:

“He’s one of the young leaders with the greatest ability to continue, if I’m unable to — God knows what he does — if I’m unable to, to continue with his firm hand, with his gaze, with his heart of a man of the people, with his gift for people, with his intelligence, with the international recognition he’s earned, with his leadership, leading the presidency.”
