US primaries: Blanche Lincoln among night’s big winners

Senator Blanche Lincoln confounded pundits who predicted her demiseTwo-term Democratic senator Blanche Lincoln was one of the big winners as voters in 12 states picked candidates for the US mid-term general elections.

Ms Lincoln confounded pundits who had predicted anti-incumbent feeling would see her unseated by Lt Gov Bill Halter.

But in Nevada, Republican governor Jim Gibbons lost his renomination bid after a term marked by a messy divorce.

The November polls are expected to trim the majorities in Congress held by President Obama’s Democratic Party.

The busiest night of the primary calendar saw Democratic and Republican candidates being chosen to run for seats in the US Senate and the House of Representatives and a number of governorships.

And the BBC’s Steve Kingstone, in Washington, says it proved to be a night for strong women.

South Carolina Republican Nikki Haley – bidding to be the state’s first female governor – brushed aside unproven allegations of an extra-marital affair to win a place in a run-off vote.

Meanwhile, primaries in California were shaken up by two female former CEOs.

The Associated Press declared Meg Whitman, the billionaire former head of eBay, the winner of the race to be the Republican candidate to replace Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger – setting up a contest against former Governor Jerry Brown.

Another wealthy businesswoman, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, was leading in early returns in the Republican primary to decide who will challenge Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer.

Tea PartyPolls suggest an unusually strong level of dissatisfaction with incumbents in 2010, and the results will be scrutinised for further indication of anti-Washington sentiment among voters.

In a Washington Post-ABC News poll released on Tuesday, just 29% of Americans said they were inclined to vote for their current representative.

The performance of candidates backed by the grassroots conservative Tea Party movement is also being closely watched.

In Nevada, three main Republican candidates were competing to challenge Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat whose popularity in his home state has nosedived, and who is seen as a big target for Republicans in November.

Polling ahead of the primary showed Tea Party-backed candidate Sharron Angle pulling away from her rivals.

But pundits say that if Republicans choose her they may be handing the embattled Mr Reid a lifeline, as the state is considered unlikely in a general election to opt for a very conservative candidate like Ms Angle.

November’s mid-term elections will be viewed by many as a referendum on Mr Obama’s presidency.

Analysts say the possibility of the Democratic Party losing control of one or both houses of Congress cannot be ruled out.

The Democrats currently control 59 seats in the Senate (including two seats held by independents) and have a majority of some 40 seats in the House of Representatives.

When her number (55 (9 + 30 +1+9+6+0 = 55 = her life lesson)) comes up, that’s when she gets to live/experience what she is here to live/experience.  So this is HER month!!!
