Three weeks after a Reno man disappeared while driving across northern Nevada, his whereabouts and fate remain a mystery, but the search may be widening and may now included possible links to other cases.

Patrick Carnes was last sighted five hours from home in Wells in eastern Nevada. His car was found just east of Winnemucca at  the freeway exit for Pumpernickel Valley. The 2005 dark green Subaru Forester was stuck in the mud.

The first thought was that he had stopped to let his dog relieve himself and when he discovered he was stuck walked up to the highway and caught a ride. That scenario is now getting a second look.

Carnes told a highway patrolman he encountered east of Wells he was tired.

Would a tired 86 year old man press on late at night?

His son, Reno realtor, Jim Carnes thinks he might.

“I think just depending on how tired he was, he may have thought ‘I’m five hours from Reno, let’s go for it.'”

From the beginning his family has been an active in the search for 86 year old Patrick Carnes. In fact, they’ve covered hundreds of miles of the I-80 corridor talking with people and leaving fliers with Carnes’ picture and that of his dog, Lucky.

“We’re still searching, putting out fliers, calling hospitals,” says Carnes’ son, Jim.

But investigators now wonder if Carnes, by all accounts a vigorous 86 with no signs of dementia would leave his car in the middle of the night and hitch a ride. Could something have happened to Carnes further east near Wells, his car left further down the road?

Plus, other information is widening the search.

Investigators are looking at any possible links to two other cases.

A month earlier a Canadian couple, Albert and Rita Chretien, headed to a convention in Las Vegas gassed up in Baker City, Oregon and haven’t been seen since. Their route would have taken them through Boise and southern Idaho, then south through Wells.

A couple of weeks earlier a Rexburg, Idaho businessman, Grant  Moedl, disappeared while driving some of the same route through southern Idaho.

Three disappearances, somewhat similar victims in the same, if somewhat wide, geographical area.

Humboldt County Undersheriff Curtis Kull says his department continues to follow leads, but on the possibility something may have happened to Patrick Carnes further east in the Wells area, he’s now in daily contact with counterparts in Oregon and Idaho.

Jim Carnes admits this new possibility is disturbing, but says it won’t deter the family who plans to be searching the desert from Reno to Wells again in the next few days.

“We need to get back out there.”

Kull is still waiting to view security camera video from a Flying J Truck Stop in Wells. A clerk there remembers a man matching Carnes’ description buying gas that night.

The video would not only confirm that sighting, but could contain glimpses of anyone else who stopped at the same time. As of Thursday he still had not received the video.

In the meantime he’s encouraging anyone with potential information to call the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office in Winnemucca or Secret Witness toll free at 775 322-4900.

June 9th

6 + 9 +2+0+1+0 = 18 = his personal year (from June 9th, 2010 to June 8th, 2011) = At night.  Twilight.  Grisly.  Horror.  Horrific.

18 year + 2 (February) = 20 = his personal year (from February 9th, 2011 to March 8th, 2011) = The need to exercise sound judgement.

20 year + 2 (2nd of the month on Wednesday March 2nd, 2011) = 22 = his personal day (from his time of birth on Wednesday March 2nd, 2011 until his time of birth on Thursday March 3rd, 2011) = Look before you leap.

his path of destiny / how he learned what he was here to learn = 46 = Stature.  Age.  Maturity.

[His 46 path of destiny would tend to indicate searching for someone(s) with one or more of these characteristics:

Stature:  perhaps who to suspect is either very short or very tall

Age:  perhaps who to suspect is either very young or very old

Maturity:  perhaps who to suspect is either very mature/immature for their age]

[This could indicate looking for his body exposed to the elements.  It couls also indicate suspecting someone who is homeless and/or unemployed.
