Two Cypriot athletes, Panayiota Andreou and Marcos Baghdatis, will compete later in their respective sport, skeet and tennis.

Andreou, 17, is the youngest among the 17 athletes who will compete in today’s games and aims at reaching her own personal record of 70/75 discs.

If she achieves this, she will go through to the final six athletes to claim what is best for her in the final.

Baghdatis will compete in the first round of the Olympic tournament against Japanese Go Soeda, 47th on the ATP ratings. The two players have never played against each other. The winner will be the player who wins two sets first.

On Saturday Queen Elisabeth visited the Olympic village and met the heads of mission from all participating countries, including Cyprus.

Meanwhile, President Demetris Christofias has told Cypriot athletes that winning a medal would be very welcome for a small country like Cyprus.

Addressing the 13 Cypriot athletes at a reception in London, he invited them to “leave any problems behind them and focus on their mission, which is to honour their country”.

“The most important thing is participation in the Olympic Games. Nonetheless, I would be very happy if we can secure a medal or two,” he added.

Cyprus, he said, paraded with much pride on Friday night along with scores of other nations at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics on an equal par with much larger nations.

The President thanked the Cypriot community in Britain for their contribution to the social and political affairs relating to Cyprus.

The President of the Cyprus Olympic Committee Ouranios Ioannides expressed hope that Cyprus will secure one medal and thanked the President for his support to the Cypriot athletes.

The reception hall, at the Hellenic Centre in London, hosted a photographic exhibition of past Olympic Games, and in particular rare photographs of the 1896 Athens Olympics.

The President will visit the Cypriot athletes at the Olympic village.
