Sexy Spy Anna Chapman in Russian Maxim (8 pics)Sexy Spy Anna Chapman in Russian Maxim (8 pics)

Monday March 28th, 2011

Anna Chapman has taken off her clothes for Maxim pictures, inked her own TV show “Mysteries of the World, with Anna Chapman”, secured her own Apple iPhone app, and has become the Paris Hilton of Russian consumer product endorsements.

But now is Chapman making the move from the KGB to the Kremlin? Insiders believe so.

They contend that Chapman’s next goal could be a December bid for the Russian parliament. Chapman has launched a new website that insiders believe is the first step for her December bid for the State Duma. Chapman will reportedly run on Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party ticket.

Chapman recently told news “Before returning to Moscow in July 2010, I aspired to personal harmony and was more concerned with my own happiness.” She adds “But in due course my ideology changed. I came to understand that fulfillment in life comes from helping those around me. The day that I returned I consider to be my second birthday.”

In a recent interview, however, Chapman said she is launching instead a 3D production company. “We have the Winter Olympics and other interesting events coming up that I could cover. I’m going to launch a 3D pilot project soon.”

One of Anna’s most notable lines as a spy was the following: “Okay, tomorrow at 11, I am going to be sitting at one of the benches and she is going to ask me if she saw me in California. I am going to say no, it was the Hamptons. I will take the documents, tell her to sing. I will hold the journal, this is how she will recognize me and I got back and put the postal stamp.”

In July 2010, Anna Chapman and other spies pleaded guilty in a New York courtroom. The deal involved immediate deportation of the 10 individuals in exchange for a reported 4 foreigners held for espionage by Russia. Thereafter, she was transported via Vision Airways from LaGuardia to Vienna.

Russia’s Anna Chapman captured the media world’s attention last year when she was deported from the US, accused of being a spy. The BBC’s Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg investigates “Russia’s most glamorous secret agent”.

On the 35th floor of a Moscow skyscraper, an office is filling with smoke.

Suddenly I hear the click-click-click of high heels on parquet floor. And through the mist walks redhead Anna Chapman in a stunning blue dress.

She doesn’t seem in any hurry to evacuate the building.

That’s because the smoke is being pumped into the room by a machine to make her look special.

Russia’s most glamorous secret agent is here to record her weekly TV show. Judging from the scripted lines she’s speaking to camera, it’s clearly not light entertainment.

“Why are some people marked by death, and others escape it?”

Cut.

“More than a million Russians die every year. Nearly 40,000 in road accidents.”

Cut.

“This woman returned from Egypt a cripple. A shark ripped off her arm.”

Cut.

Unsolved mysteries

Anna Chapman’s show is called Secrets of the World. Each week on the Russian channel Ren TV, she sets about explaining the mysteries of our planet.

“The programme’s for everyone,” Anna says in a break. “Everyone is interested in mysteries, because they are secrets, they are unsolved.”

She is less keen, however, to talk about her own secrets. I ask Anna Chapman if she really had been a spy.

“I will never deny and I will never confirm the fact,” she replies coldly.

The Americans had no such doubts on the matter.

Eight months ago, Anna Chapman was one of 10 alleged Russian sleeper agents deported from the United States.

At Vienna airport the agents were exchanged for four people the Russians claimed had been spying for the West.

It was the biggest spy swap since the Cold War. Back in Russia, Ms Chapman and her fellow deportees received medals from President Dmitry Medvedev and heaps of praise from Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Most secret agents, once uncovered, arrested and deported, normally adopt a low profile back home. Not Anna Chapman.

Since returning to Russia, she’s hardly been out of the headlines.

Although I haven’t confirmed this fact, she is surely the first Russian spy to have done a photo shoot for a men’s magazine wearing very little and brandishing a pistol.

As well as being a model, Ms Chapman has also been an investment adviser for a bank, a charity worker and a campaigner for high-speed internet.

She’s also been elected one of the leaders of the youth wing of Mr Putin’s political party.

There are rumours she may even run for parliament this autumn. I ask Ms Chapman if that’s true.

“All I’m going to say is I’m interested in helping other people,” she replies. “That’s all.”

It’s another secret she is keeping well away from the cameras.

3D dreams

Anna Chapman rarely gives interviews, although last December a Russian TV show declared her Woman of the Year and devoted an hour of airtime to her.

In a programme resembling This is Your Life, Ms Chapman sat on a settee as a stream of figures from her past appeared on stage.

Anna Chapman in undated photo from Russian social networking site Odnoklassniki - released 28 June 2010
Ms Chapman lived in New York where she said she ran a property firm

Among them, Yegor from Volgograd – her old boyfriend from school. The audience applauded as he gave her a peck on the cheek and a bunch of flowers.

One person who wasn’t there was the man Anna married when she was living in England: Alex Chapman. They divorced after four years of marriage.

Now Anna hosts her own TV show. And she’s got more plans in the world of television.

“I’m planning to launch a 3D production company here in Russia,” she says. “We have the Winter Olympics and other interesting events coming up that I could cover. I’m going to launch a 3D pilot project soon.”

After an hour’s recording on the set of her programme, Anna Chapman is flagging.

“To be honest, I wouldn’t mind something to eat now,” she says to the director.

It shows that, although Ms Chapman is a woman of mystery, she is only human.

She is also charming, at times giggly and clearly keen to perfect her TV skills.

But there is a steely side, too, to Anna Chapman, a determination not to let down her guard.

She is unlikely to reveal her own secrets any time soon.

Anna Chapman, now a television star and sometime lingerie model in her native Russia, was the face of the biggest spy swap since the Cold War when she and nine others were arrested in June 2010. On Monday, the FBI released a trove of videos and documents about Chapman and others.

In one, a woman in her late 20s with reddish hair and sporting big sunglasses walks into a New York City coffee shop, takes  a seat and pulls out a laptop computer.  She leans forward to talk to her companion and briefly flashes the smile that turned her into an international sensation.

The agency said it released the videos and documents in response to a Freedom of Information request.

“The arrests of 10 Russian spies last year provided a chilling reminder that espionage on U.S. soil did not disappear when the Cold War ended,” the agency said in an accompanying statement. “The highly publicized case also offered a rare glimpse into the sensitive world of counterintelligence and the FBI’s efforts to safeguard the nation from those who would steal our vital secrets.”

The agency said its investigation into Chapman and others working for the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) went on for more than decade. The investigation was dubbed “Operation Ghost Stories.”

The tapes show Chapman shopping in Macy’s at Herald Square. Additional photos and video show other conspirators burying money in a weed patch, handing off documents or meeting at Columbus Circle. The group was a collection of what is known as illegals because they took civilian jobs rather than working from the Russian Embassy. In general, they seemed to live quiet middle-class lives while burrowing into U.S. society to cultivate contacts.

“Although the SVR ‘illegals,’ as they were called, never got their hands on any classified documents, their intent from the start was serious, well-funded by the SVR, and far-ranging,” the FBI said.“The deep-cover Russian spies may not have achieved their objective, but they were not idle. They collected information and transmitted it back to Russia, and they were actively engaged in what is known in the spy business as ‘spotting and assessing.’ They identified colleagues, friends, and others who might be vulnerable targets, and it is possible they were seeking to co-opt people they encountered in the academic environment who might one day hold positions of power and influence,” according to the FBI.

The suspects were arrested  June 27, 2010. Within days, they pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiring to serve as unlawful agents of the Russian Federation within the U.S. and were deported. The agents were swapped for four Russians imprisoned for spying for the West.

Chapman drew so much interest that Jay Leno, interviewing Vice President Joe Biden, asked: “Do we have any spies that hot?” Replied Biden: “It was not my idea to send her back.”

After her deportation to Russia, Chapman launched her career as recovering spy celebrity.

Alexander Poteyev

Alexander Poteyev, third from the left (standing), is said to be the man who  betrayed the Russian spies. This picture was taken in Kabul in 1979 when he was serving in the KGB’s ‘Zenith’ Special Forces

Chief justice Alexander Ababkov (back centre) announces a sentence, in absentia, on the Russian foreign intelligence service’s Colonel Alexander Poteyev in the Moscow district military court.
5:07PM BST 27 Jun 2011
In a closed-door trial that shed new light on the Kremlin’s biggest spy   embarrassment since the Cold War, Colonel Alexander Poteyev, a senior   director in Russia’s   SVR foreign intelligence service, was found guilty in absentia and faces   twenty five years in jail if ever caught.

The court made public a farewell text message that Col. Poteyev sent to his   wife Marina while fleeing the country last June. “Mary, try to take   this calmly: I am leaving not for a short time but forever,” he wrote.

“I did not want this but I had to. I am starting a new life. I shall try   to help the children,” he added, referring to his two adult children   who had by then moved to the United States.

His wife Marina testified in his defence and is said to be keen to join him in   America but has said she has no idea of his precise whereabouts.

“Poteyev’s actions dealt a significant blow to Russia’s national security”,   the court ruled, stripping him of his rank and state awards, a punishment   that is unlikely to disrupt his new life in the US.

As deputy head of the SVR’s department ‘S’ which ran illegal sleeper agents in   America, the judge ruled that the 59-year-old spy had used his classified   knowledge to leave the Kremlin’s network of agents in the US in tatters.

Anna Chapman and nine other agents were ignominiously deported by Washington   last summer in the biggest East-West spy swap since the Cold War due to his   treason, the court said, a move that set the Kremlin’s US espionage   operation back by at least a decade according to some experts.

He had also told the Americans how Moscow financed and communicated with its   agents, the court added.

New details of his dramatic escape emerged during the trial with witnesses   testifying that he was in such a hurry to leave that he walked out of a   meeting at the SVR foreign intelligence service’s Moscow headquarters to   catch a night train to neighbouring Belarus where he was met by CIA agents.

The US agents then apparently smuggled him into America via Ukraine and   Germany using a fake Russian passport that had been forged using the stolen   but real-life details of a Russian citizen who had applied for a US visa.

Anna Chapman, who has tried to cash in on her new-found celebrity, is said to   have testified against Col. Poteyev, saying he was the only one who could   have betrayed her and the others. The court heard that he had been working   for the CIA since 1999, and had also betrayed Kremlin agents working in   Latin America and Canada.

Before his alleged betrayal, he was regarded as a loyal patriot. He had served   in the KGB’s elite ‘Zenith’ special forces unit during the Soviet occupation   of Afghanistan, while his father was a Hero of the Soviet Union. But he is   reported to have worked in New York during the 1990s and it was there that   the CIA allegedly recruited him.

Although his colleagues have accused him of selling his country out for as   little as the equivalent of £12,000, the court said it had found no evidence   that he had taken cash for his betrayal. Col. Poteyev’s lawyer said he would   appeal the sentence. Former colleagues have said he should be shot.
