Johnny Football just got himself a way cooler nickname: Johnny Heisman.

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, taking college football’s top individual prize Saturday night after a record-breaking debut.Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o finished second, and Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein was a distant third in the voting. In a Heisman race with two nontraditional candidates, Manziel broke through the class barrier and kept Te’o from becoming the first purely defensive player to win the award.

Manziel drew 474 first-place votes and 2,029 points from the panel of media members and former winners.

“I have been dreaming about this since I was a kid, running around the backyard pretending I was Doug Flutie, throwing Hail Marys to my dad,” he said after hugging his parents and kid sister.

Manziel seemed incredibly calm after his name was announced, hardly resembling the guy who dashes around the football field on Saturday. He simply bowed his head, and later gave the trophy a quick kiss.

“I wish my whole team could be up here with me,” he said with a wide smile.

Te’o had 321 first-place votes and 1,706 points and Klein received 60 firsts and 894 points.

Just a few days after turning 20, Manziel proved times have truly changed in college football, and that experience can be really overrated.

For years, seniors dominated the award named after John Heisman, the pioneering Georgia Tech coach from the early 1900s. In the 1980s, juniors started becoming common winners. Tim Tebow became the first sophomore to win it in 2007, and two more won it in the next two seasons.

Adrian Peterson had come closest as a freshman, finishing second to USC quarterback Matt Leinart in 2004. But it took 78 years for a newbie to take home the big bronze statue. Johnny Football really can do it all.

Peterson was a true freshman for Oklahoma. As a redshirt freshman, Manziel attended school and practiced with the team last year, but did not play in any games.

He’s the second player from Texas A&M to win the Heisman, joining John David Crow from 1957, and did so without the slightest hint of preseason hype. Manziel didn’t even win the starting job until two weeks before the season.

Who needs hype when you can fill up a highlight reel the way Manziel can?

With daring runs and elusive improvisation, Manziel broke 2010 Heisman winner Cam Netwon’s Southeastern Conference record with 4,600 total yards, led the Aggies to a 10-2 record in their first season in the SEC and orchestrated an upset at then-No. 1 Alabama in November that stamped him as a contender for the trophy.

He has thrown for 3,419 yards and 24 touchdowns and run for 1,181 yards and 19 more scores to become the first freshman, first SEC player and fifth player overall to throw for 3,000 yards and run for 1,000 in a season.

Manziel has one more game this season, when the No. 10 Aggies play Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 4.

On Dec. 6, Notre Dame officials said, Manti Te’o received an alarming phone call: his dead girlfriend, whose loss had inspired him during what had become a triumphant year for the Fighting Irish, might still be alive. Either that or Te’o, a gifted linebacker with a reputation for trusting others, had been the victim of a hoax, and the woman he thought he had come to know online and through long, emotional phone calls had never really existed.de him believe he may have been duped into a relationship with an imaginary woman.

Te’o, a Notre Dame official said this week, was badly shaken by the call.

Nonetheless, two days later, on Dec. 8 at the Heisman Trophy ceremony, Te’o was asked about his most unforgettable moment of the season. Te’o, clearly aware of questions surrounding his girlfriend’s death, responded with little hesitation: the memory he would never forget from the 2012 season was the moment he learned his girlfriend was dead.

That sequence of events in December was one of many being pored over Thursday — by journalists and bloggers, students at Notre Dame and an American public trying to figure out the truth at the heart of one of the most bizarre of sports stories.

Was Te’o a sympathetic victim of a cruel fraud, or a calculating participant in a phony story that had been milked to aid his bid for the Heisman Trophy?

The series of events in early December, though, like so much else that has emerged about Te’o and his girlfriend in the last 48 hours, is hardly conclusive. Te’o, in giving the interview on Dec. 8, quite possibly was nothing more than a frightened and confused young man, unsure himself of what was going on or what to say.

On Thursday, a day of little clarity and deepening mystery, Notre Dame stuck by its official version: Te’o was the target of a meanspirited and vicious hoax, and the university’s hired investigators had determined that it involved a vast cast of characters, all engaged in an effort to humiliate a humble, private and perhaps somewhat naïve young man in the public spotlight.

Te’o, for his part, did not speak. His agent did not offer a statement, and a rumored interview on national television never occurred. His agent told The Associated Press that he had been in Bradenton, Fla., training at the IMG Academy in preparation for the N.F.L. draft.

One thing in the odd, evolving drama did seem to become clearer: as far back as early December, there were some people in the Twitter world who were beginning to sound alarms about the authenticity of Te’o’s inspirational story.

Those people online maintained openly that they believed Te’o had been duped, with some pointing to a California man named Ronaiah Tuiasosopo as the architect of the scheme. They even joked about the embarrassment and absurdity of the fake story line as Notre Dame prepared to play in the Bowl Championship Series title game against Alabama.

On Dec. 5, one Twitter message was sent to The New ND Nation, with 7,000 followers, saying it needed “to know the truth” about Te’o’s girlfriend.

A blogger, Justin Megahan, collected some of the Twitter messages in one blog post and titled it “Catfished,” referring to “Catfish,” a 2010 documentary in which a woman created a fake online persona to strike up a relationship.

The alarms online, such as they were, never seemed to gain wider attention, perhaps because, at the time, a hoax seemed an unlikely possibility.

Even a month and a half later — and after the Web site Deadspin first reported on the hoax on Wednesday — figuring out the exact truth continued to be challenging.

As of Thursday evening, the people identified by Deadspin to be behind the hoax, including Tuiasosopo, had not emerged to tell their side of the story. Telephone calls to Tuiasosopo were not successful. Some people who appeared close to him shunned journalists on their Twitter accounts.

Two series. That is what defined Notre Dame’s defense in this season of resurgence, as the Irish fought to an undefeated regular season and the Bowl Championship Series national title game against Alabama on Monday night.

Two series with that Notre Dame defense backed up near its goal line, protecting a single-digit lead. Two series in which a pair of opponents ran straight ahead, up the middle, close enough to the end zone to measure by feet, or inches. Two series that clinched two victories in the final minutes.

For all the reasons Notre Dame arrived back at the national championship — reasons like Coach Brian Kelly and quarterback Everett Golson and linebacker Manti Te’o — none proved as important or overlooked as the work the defense did when it was backed up near the end zone. Notre Dame stopped Stanford there in overtime, inside the 1-yard-line. The Irish also turned back Southern California at the 1-yard-line in their regular-season finale.

Had either of those teams gained that single yard, Notre Dame’s magical season would have ended in a series of almosts — almost undefeated, almost B.C.S. title game bound.

Instead, Notre Dame highlighted the art of the goal-line stand, a sequence among the most straightforward and difficult in football. It did so, according to the defensive coordinator Bob Diaco, because of the consistency of its approach.

“The goal-line stands are a function of players knowing clearly exactly what to do, playing with whole heart, whole body, whole mind,” Diaco said. “No situation will be too much for us to take on, and no place on the field will we get discouraged, no matter where the ball is placed.”

That mentality carried Notre Dame through so many close games this season. It made the difference between a good team and a great one. It was a mind-set, Te’o said, that the Irish lacked in recent seasons.

Notre Dame’s ability to stop offenses near the end zone, combined with Alabama’s ability to score once its offense closed in, provided an important subplot before the title tilt. The Crimson Tide scored roughly 8 times out of every 10 times it advanced inside an opponent’s 20-yard-line. The Fighting Irish allowed opponents inside the 20 only 33 times, and in those instances, they yielded a scant eight touchdowns.

This led Alabama players and coaches to laud the Notre Dame defense throughout the week that led up to the championship game. The offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier labeled the Fighting Irish’s front seven the best the Crimson Tide would see this season. Receiver Kevin Norwood even paid Notre Dame the ultimate compliment.

“They’re like an SEC defense,” he said, in reference to Alabama’s conference, known for its tough, physical, stout defenses.

For as long as teams have played football, the goal-line stand has proved to be a game-changer, a brute-force sequence, man against man, power against power, strength against strength, that greatly shifted momentum from a team that is about to score to a team that refused to yield any points.

There is little technical artistry involved, the focus instead on simple concepts and difficult execution. Defensive linemen must get underneath the pads of their offensive counterparts, gain leverage and push the offense backward. They call this setting a new line of scrimmage. Linebackers must fill the gaps behind the linemen. Cornerbacks must cover receivers, should an offense pass, or pinch inside from the edge, wary of a running back leaping over the pile.

The defense cannot expect officials to call many penalties that close, in crucial moments. The sheer mass of bodies in such a confined space makes that difficult, as do the stakes involved.

“It’s fight or flight,” Notre Dame safety Zeke Motta said. “You have to make this stop. There’s no other option. You dream of situations like this your whole life.”

Like against Stanford in October. Notre Dame led, 20-13, after it scored first in overtime. Stanford drove to the 4-yard-line. Four times the Cardinal handed the ball to Stepfan Taylor. Four times Notre Dame stopped him short, although in the final instance Taylor inched so close to the end zone that many believe he actually scored.

OCTOBER 28, 2012             10:20 AM EST

Notre Dame passed its biggest test of the season Saturday night in Norman as Brian Kelly’s squad scored a decisive 30-13 win over Oklahoma to remain undefeated.

The Fighting Irish run defense held the Sooners to 15 yards on 24 carries, and Manti Te’o bolstered his Heisman Trophy candidacy with a late interception.

Notre Dame now sits at 8-0 with just four games remaining: home against Pittsburgh, at Boston College, home against Wake Forest and at USC. While crazy things happen every week in college football, it’s not a stretch to think that the Irish will enter the game against the Trojans unbeaten. And the way that ‘SC has played this season and the way the Irish played against a pass-happy Sooners squad, a 12-0 mark at the end of the regular season doesn’t look too far-fetched for ND.

Who would have predicted that in the preseason?

And a 12-0 mark, no matter if Oregon or Kansas State remains unbeaten, will get the Irish a date in Miami for the BCS title game. The computers already love the Irish, and the human pollsters will certainly now give more praise to Kelly’s squad after the win Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Alabama kept rolling this weekend with a 38-7 victory over previously unbeaten Mississippi State in Tuscaloosa. And while the Crimson Tide still have a road test at LSU and a hypothetical SEC title game remaining, it’s hard to see any team beating Nick Saban’s squad right now. The Tide can both run and pass efficiently, the defense is flat-out dominant and the special teams are solid.

If the BCS title game matches up the Irish and Tide, it would arguably be the most highly anticipated title game of the BCS era.

And if Oregon and Kansas State remain undefeated, it would be BCS armageddon because the Tide and Irish are likely to sit at Nos. 1 and 2 in the final BCS standings if they finish unbeaten.
