Charlotte Aitchison didn’t listen to Top 40 when she was first exploring her musical interests in her early teens. Instead, the Hertfordshire, England native better known as Charli XCX was rummaging through CD crates for punk CDs and wearing defiant outfits to school — “five belts instead of one,” she recalls — in order to demonstrate her overall rebelliousness.

“I was a massive fan of Siouxsie and the Banshees, and I also bought loads of like really rubbish punk compilation CDs, and [albums] from bands like Sham 69 and the Vibrators,” the U.K. singer tells Billboard. “I was really into that for a period of time because I loved that whole spirit that punk was about… I’ve just always liked that ‘break free’ kind of thing.”

Fast forward a half-decade, and the 20-year-old Charli XCX has morphed into one of the most promising new talents in pop music, all while maintaining a decidedly punk attitude. For instance, “You (Ha Ha Ha),” her latest single released earlier this month, is a deliriously catchy piece of bubblegum, but with a music video that features the singer wearing a spiked collar and traipsing around a weapons factory. After months of blog hype due to killer solo singles like “Nuclear Seasons,” “Stay Away” and “You’re The One,” as well as a featured spot on Icona Pop’s single “I Love It” (which has sold 71,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan), Charli XCX will release her debut album in “April or May,” and hopes to breach the mainstream pop scene in the States — while still frequenting punk shows in Chinatown, as she did during her last visit to New York City.

Although “Stay Away” and “Nuclear Seasons” will both be included on her forthcoming album, Charli XCX’s debut will be led by “You (Ha Ha Ha),” which samples Gold Panda’s 2010 track “You” and will receive a remixes EP release in February. The original track’s music video, which has racked up 276,000 Youtube views since its Jan. 10 release, is an homage to “Grindhouse girls,” with a kick-ass collection of ladies manufacturing and then dancing with automatic weapons in hand.

Charli XCX acknowledges that the timing of the clip’s release was a bit dubious due to the recent swath of shooting tragedies in the U.S., but says that “You (Ha Ha Ha)’s” video is meant to herald girl power, not violence. “From Jessie Ware to Azealea Banks to Grimes, I think it’s a really good time for girls [in music] at the moment,” she says. “I’ve always been a fan of standing up for what you do, and just doing sh*t your own way.  I think it’s important for girls to not get sucked into the whole idea of being perfect, because sometimes, the pop world is very perfect.”

If tracks like “You (Ha Ha Ha)” and “Nuclear Seasons” are any indication, Charli XCX’s debut LP will challenge the conventions of female pop music in 2013. The singer says that Ariel Rechtshaid, the pop whiz who helmed Sky Ferreira’s “Everything is Embarrassing” and scored writing credits on Usher’s “Looking 4 Myself” album, is the main producer on the album, after helming “Nuclear Seasons” and “Stay Away.” Charli has also logged studio time with Andrew Wyatt of Miike Snow and Clams Casino, the cloud-rap maestro responsible for some of A$AP Rocky and Mac Miller’s best beats.

“He’s one of my favorite producers and I love the sound that he makes — it’s so luscious, angelic, and kind of drugged out at the same time,” she says of Clams Casino. “We did the session and the stuff that we got sounded really cool. We haven’t finished yet. I never know [if it will make the album] until it’s at least finished, and I have like five weeks to listen to that one song on repeat and then I’m like, ‘I know, it’s going to be Track 5 on the album!'”

As she pairs down her debut album’s track list and picks 10-12 songs that best represent her sound, Charli XCX is also furiously honing her stage show, after scoring a spot on Coldplay’s 2012 tour alongside fellow opener Santigold. The singer hopes to kick off a proper headlining tour in the States sometime in the next two months, and plans on being at South by Southwest in March.

“I’m working like a crazy bitch on my show at the moment, because I want it to be fucking amazing,” says Charli XCX. “I’m basically making a music video of every song … we’re going to use all these film samples from my favorite films, like ‘The Craft,’ ‘Clueless’ and ‘Carrie.’ So it’s going to be incredible.”

My first introduction to Sky Ferreira was as an actress in the movie Putty Hill where she played a young girl grappling with her brother’s drug overdose and the weight of having to grieve in front of other people. There’s a scene at some point in the movie where her character has a full-blown meltdown, screaming at the top of her lungs about how she just wants all of it to be over. Her performance is so powerful, the fourth wall never breaks. One of the best things about “Everything Is Embarrassing” is that it preserves that image of Ferreira as an artist who is committed to doing work with realistic emotions. What’s even better about this Krystal Klear remix is how much it is that Putty Hill scene’s pole — warm house, the kind of thing one might need after expurgating every bad feeling from her body. The movie is short, beautifully shot, and features a karaoke scene where she does Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” on Whitney Houston-levels of moving.

Ferreira’s Ghost EP is out now on Capitol.

Aaron Swartz, a wizardly programmer who as a teenager helped to develop a computer code that provided a format for delivering regularly changing Web content and in later life became an unwavering crusader to make that information free of charge, died in New York on Friday, a family member said.

Mr. Swartz was 26, and his death was due to suicide. His body was found by his girlfriend in his apartment in New York, his uncle, Michael Wolf, said on Saturday. He had apparently hanged himself, Mr. Wolf said.

As a 14-year-old, Mr. Swartz helped create RSS, the nearly ubiquitous software that allows people to subscribe to information from the Internet. But as he reached adulthood, Mr. Swartz became even more of an Internet folk hero to many because of his online activism to make many Internet files open to the public for free.

In July 2011, he was indicted in Boston on federal charges that he illegally gained access to JSTOR, a subscription-only online service for distributing scientific and literary journals, and downloaded 4.8 million articles and other documents, nearly the entire library.

At the time of his death, Mr. Swartz was still facing charges in that case related to wire fraud, computer fraud and unlawfully obtaining information from a protected computer, which carried a penalty, if convicted, of up to 35 years in prison and $1 million in fines.

“Aaron built surprising new things that changed the flow of information around the world,” said Susan Crawford, a professor at Cardozo School of Law in New York who served in the Obama administration as a technology adviser. She called Mr. Swartz “a complicated prodigy,” and said “graybeards approached him with awe.”

Mr. Wolf, his uncle, said that he would remember Mr. Swartz as a young man who “looked at the world, and had a certain logic in his brain, and the world didn’t necessarily fit in with that logic, and that was sometimes difficult.”

The Tech, a newspaper of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, previously reported Mr. Swartz’s death.

Mr. Swartz led an often itinerant life that included dropping out of Stanford, forming companies and organizations, and becoming a fellow at Harvard University’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics.

Mr. Swartz formed a company that merged with Reddit, the popular news and information site. He also co-founded Demand Progress, a group that promotes online campaigns on social justice issues — including a successful effort, with other groups, to oppose a Hollywood-backed Internet piracy bill known as SOPA, the Stop Piracy Act.

But he also found trouble when he took part in efforts to release information to the public that he felt should be freely available. In 2008, he took on Pacer — or Public Access to Court Electronic Records, the repository for federal judicial documents. The database charges 10 cents a page for documents; activists like Carl Malamud, the founder of public.resource.org, have long argued that such documents should be free since they are produced at public expense. Joining Mr. Malamud’s efforts to make the documents public by posting legally obtained files to the Internet for free access, he wrote an elegant little program to download 20 million pages of documents from free library accounts, or roughly 20 percent of the enormous database.

The government abruptly shut down the free library program, and Mr. Malamud feared that legal trouble might follow, even though he felt they had violated no laws. As he recalled in a newspaper account of the events, “I immediately saw the potential for overreaction by the courts.” He recalled telling Mr. Swartz, “You need to talk to a lawyer. I need to talk to a lawyer.”

Mr. Swartz recalled, “I had this vision of the feds crashing down the door, taking everything away.” He said he locked the deadbolt on his door, lay down on the bed for a while, and then called his mother.

When an article about his Pacer exploit was published in The New York Times, Mr. Swartz responded in a blog in a typically puckish manner, announcing the story in the form of a personal ad: “Attention attractive people: Are you looking for someone respectable enough that they’ve been personally vetted by The New York Times, but has enough of a bad-boy streak that the vetting was because they ‘liberated’ millions of dollars of government documents? If so, look no further than page A14 of today’s New York Times.” In the Pacer exploit, the federal government investigated but decided not to prosecute.

In 2011, however, Mr. Swartz went beyond that, according to a federal indictment. In an effort to provide free public access to JSTOR, he broke into computer networks at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by means that included breaking into a utility closet on campus and leaving a laptop that signed into the university computer network under a false account, federal officials said.

Mr. Swartz returned the hard drives with 4.8 million documents, and JSTOR declined to pursue the case. But United States attorney Carmen M. Ortiz pressed on, saying that “Stealing is stealing, whether you use a computer command or a crowbar, and whether you take documents, data or dollars.”

Founded in 1995, JSTOR, or Journal Storage, is nonprofit, but institutions can pay tens of thousands of dollars for a subscription that bundles scholarly publications online. JSTOR says it needs the money to collect and to distribute the material and, in some cases, subsidize institutions that cannot afford it.

Mr. Malamud said that while he did not approve of Mr. Swartz’s actions at M.I.T., “Access to knowledge and access to justice have become all about access to money, and Aaron tried to change that. That should never have been considered a criminal activity.”

Cory Doctorow, a science fiction author and an online activist, posted a tribute to Mr. Swartz on the blog he co-edits, BoingBoing. In an e-mail answer to questions, he called Mr. Swartz “uncompromising, principled, smart, flawed, loving, caring, and brilliant. The world was a better place with him in it.”

Of the indictment, he said, “The fact that the U.S. legal apparatus decided he belonged behind bars for downloading scholarly articles without permission is as neat an indictment of our age — and validation of his struggle — as you could ask for.”

Mr. Swartz, he noted, had a habit of turning on those closest to him, saying that “Aaron held the world, his friends, and his mentors to an impossibly high standard — the same standard he set for himself.” He added, however, “It’s a testament to his friendship that no one ever seemed to hold it against him (except, maybe, himself).”

In 2007, Mr. Swartz wrote about his struggle with depression, distinguishing it from the emotion of sadness. “Go outside and get some fresh air or cuddle with a loved one and you don’t feel any better, only more upset at being unable to feel the joy that everyone else seems to feel. Everything gets colored by the sadness.” When the condition gets worse, he wrote, “you feel as if streaks of pain are running through your head, you thrash your body, you search for some escape but find none. And this is one of the more moderate forms.” Earlier that year, he gave a talk in which he described having had suicidal thoughts during a low period in his career.

On Wednesday JSTOR announced that it would open its archives for 1,200 journals to free reading by the public on a limited basis.

Lawrence Lessig, who heads the Safra Center at Harvard and had worked for a time on behalf of Mr. Swartz’s legal defense, noted in an interview that Mr. Swartz had been arrested by the M.I.T. campus police two years to the day before his suicide. That arrest led to the eventual federal indictment and financial ruin for Mr. Swartz, who had made money on the sale of Reddit to Condé Nast but had never tried to turn his intellect to making money. “I can just imagine him thinking it was going to be a million-dollar defense,” Mr. Lessig said. “He didn’t have a million dollars.”

In an online broadside directed at prosecutors, Mr. Lessig denounced what he called the federal “bullying,” and wrote, “this government needs to answer is why it was so necessary that Aaron Swartz be labeled a “felon.”

Still, Mr. Lessig said, he had seen Mr. Swartz just weeks before, at a Christmas party at his home, and before that, at Thanksgiving. “He seemed fine,” he said.

PHOTO: 16-year-old Raphael Ward was killed, Jan. 4, 2012, in New York.

January 7, 2013

A New York City teenager is dead after he reportedly refused to give up his Polo Ralph Lauren Jacket to another young man. Friends of sixteen-year-old Raphael Ward, who lived in the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan, told the New York Post that Ward had an altercation over his jacket before he was shot.

Cynthia Nieves, 14, who was with Ward before the shooting, told the Post that he warned her, “Go home!” He didn’t say what was going on, but, she told the paper, “He knew they were coming back.”

Officer Sophia Tassy of the New York Police Department confirmed the reports of an altercation over Ward’s parka, but said police aren’t sure if the same people involved in the altercation are responsible for the shooting.

On Friday evening at about 8:10 p.m., police say Ward was shot in the chest in front of a church near his home. According to the Post, Ward stumbled into a nearby convenience store after the shooting and said he had been approached by people who wanted his jacket.

Paramedics rushed Ward to Beth Israel Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No arrests have been made, and the NYPD has asked the public’s help in locating four persons of interest.

Monday afternoon, police released a surveilance video showing four men walking into a bodega, then walking out. Two of the men are wearing ski masks and have been described as Hispanic. Police said the other two are black.

The price of the green coat is unknown, but friends reported that it was expensive and may have attracted unwanted attention in one of New York’s poorer neighborhoods.

Raphael Ward lived with his mother and 7-year-old brother in the Baruch Houses, a public housing project. ABC News tried unsuccessfully to reach Ward’s family.

The New York police asked that anyone with information on the shooting call them.

A New York City woman has been arrested by federal authorities who say she tried to scam donors by posing as a relative of one of the children killed at a Connecticut elementary school.

Thirty-seven-year-old Nouel Alba was arrested Thursday and charged with lying to FBI agents.

Federal prosecutors say she used her Facebook account, telephone calls and text messages to seek donations for what she called a “funeral fund.”

Authorities say Alba denied seeking the donations when she was contacted by FBI agents investigating charity scams related to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. A gunman killed 20 children and six adults there on Dec. 14.

Alba, of the Bronx, appeared Thursday in federal court in Hartford and was released on $50,000 bond. A number listed for her was not in service.

A heartbroken 7-year-old girl’s Christmas wish came true when New York City cops nabbed the Grinch that stole her dog and a good Samaritan helped reunite her with the missing pooch.

On Christmas Day, a beaming Mia Bendray, 7, wrapped her arms around Marley, the Cavalier King Charles spaniel, who had been brazenly unleashed and taken from outside a shop in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood on Christmas Eve. The theft was caught on tape and police provided the video to news outlets.

“Thank you, the people of Washington Heights… Those great Samaritans… And now we got him on Christmas Day,” Mia’s mother Angie Estrada told WABC-TV.

The dog was rescued by Tina Cohen, a high school Spanish teacher, who came across a man on Monday in another section of Manhattan standing on a street corner and yelling that he had a dog for sale.

“I said that’s not right. I said I’d like to buy the dog. I only have $100,” Cohen said.

When the man demanded more cash, Cohen said she went to a nearby Staples and bought merchandise she then returned for cash. She bought Marley for $200 and quickly took the dog to the veterinarian that treats her own dogs.

In the meantime, other bystanders called the cops, who soon collared the alleged dognapper Brad Bacon, 29. Bacon appears to have been caught on video taking the dog on Monday.

He has not yet been arraigned. Authorities did not know if he had obtained a lawyer.

Cohen’s vet was able to track down Marley’s owner from a microchip implanted in the dog’s skin and with help from an animal rescue group that had learned about the stolen pup.

On Tuesday when Cohen watched Marley jump into Mia’s arms, she said: “You guys belong together. I’m so happy you are together.”

“That was the worst thing, there was a Grinch that was live and about in New York,” the girls’ mom said. “The Grinch didn’t win today.”
