Amari Cooper at Alabama

February 12, 2013                 1:15PM ET

To me, the three best offenses in the SEC next year should belong to, in alphabetical order, Alabama, Georgia and Texas A&M. You couldn’t go wrong with any of the three. If I were picking one, though, I’d take the Crimson Tide. It starts with senior quarterback AJ McCarron, who knows that offense inside and out, also knows the league, and doesn’t make mistakes. In the past two seasons, he has thrown 46 touchdown passes and only eight interceptions. He also has been at his best in each of the past two BCS National Championships. There’s no substitute for having a veteran quarterback who delivers in the big games.

It’s true that the Crimson Tide will be missing three starters from that vaunted offensive line, but they return the top left tackle in the league in junior Cyrus Kouandjio. And is there a more explosive one-two punch returning at running back and receiver than T.J. Yeldon and receiver Amari Cooper? As freshmen, Yeldon rushed for more than 1,100 yards, and Cooper amassed 1,000 yards in receiving. They combined for 24 touchdowns.

Russia’s most notorious mafia boss was gunned down in broad daylight by sniper fire as he exited a restaurant in central Moscow today, according to Russia’s Interior Ministry.

Aslan Usoyan, who was more commonly known as Ded Hasan (Grandpa Hasan), was the patriarch of one of Russia’s most infamous mafia clans. The tabloid news website Lifenews.ru published a bloody photo of Usoyan’s dead body.

The mobster had just left an Azeri restaurant around 2:30 p.m. when he was struck by gunfire. Reports said the shot came from a sniper rifle fired from a nearby rooftop. Russia’s Interfax news agency reports that a female bystander was also injured by gunfire.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the shooting, but Russian news reports immediately suspected it was the work of a rival gang.

Usoyan was an ethnic Kurd born in the former republic of Georgia, which was then part of the Soviet Union. He had previously survived at least two other assassination attempts. In 2010 he was wounded but survived after being shot in the stomach by a Kalashnikov rifle. At the time investigators suggested it was over a dispute with another Georgian mob boss over construction projects for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Interfax quoted an unnamed law enforcement source saying it appears the two attacks were organized by the same people. The news agency also reported that his killing could spark renewed conflict between criminal groups.

A Russian lawmaker was quoted saying today’s hit appeared to be meticulously planned.

“There is no doubt this daring crime was well prepared,” State Duma Security and Anti-Corruption Committee Chairperson Irina Yarovaya told reporters, according to Interfax.

Yarovaya dismissed suggestions that the assassination marked a return to the bloody “wild west” days of mob warfare in the 1990s.

“We have a different country, different laws and different order now,” she said.

A tight-knit, one-road Georgia island has been rocked by the mysterious death of a town official who was known as a family man and church leader.

The body of Tom Sublett, 52, was found floating in a marina less than a mile from his home on the picturesque St. Simons Island, Ga., on Dec. 11. He was found with his hands bound in front of him and with a gunshot wound to the head. An autopsy concluded he died by drowning, authorities said.

His silver Toyota was about 150 yards away. Sublett’s wife Carol had reported him missing the night before when he didn’t come home from a regular poker game.

“This is a small community that basically has one road on and off the island and only one road that goes the full length of the island,” a longtime friend, Cap Fendig, told ABCNews.com. “It’s a shocking event. Crime, certainly violent crime, is almost totally unheard of.”

Sublett was the Glynn County Commissioner and was serving the final month of his four-year term when he died.

The Glynn County Police Department released a list of evidence that was found at the death scene, including blood samples, a laptop, a gun holster, magazine rounds and empty prescription bottles. There is no gun on the evidence list and authorities will not comment on whether a weapon has been found.

Fendig, 58, is a life-long resident of the island and said he had been friends with Sublett for many years. Fendig served as county commissioner for eight years.

“I was quite shocked and very upset at the loss of a friend and the possibility that he was murdered,” Fendig said. “He was a nice guy, a good leader, open-minded, a strong leader in the church, had a big family and long community ties. It’s just not the norm.”

Fendig said he last communicated with Sublett about a week before his death. He emailed him to thank him for his service as county commissioner and said they should go fishing once his term was up. He said Sublett replied that he looked forward to doing that.

Fendig’s brother, also a close friend of Sublett’s, saw him the day of his death. The two men pulled up beside each other at a stop light, waved and then chatted on the phone for a few minutes.

Fendig’s brother said there was “no indication” from that conversation that anything was wrong or unusual with Sublett.

The case has been classified a “death investigation,” according to spokesman John Bankhead of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). The GBI is leading the investigation.

Despite a $50,000 reward offered for information in the town, Bankhead said that “very little, if any, information” has come in.

Police have been tight-lipped about the case, leading many on the island of about 18,000 people to speculate.

“They have not [said much] and that leaves more to the imagination,” Fendig said.

Fendig said unsubstantiated rumors are circulating about possible financial troubles, an insurance policy, real estate problems and family issues. There has also been speculation in the community about whether the death was a murder or a suicide. The Sublett family did not respond to a request for comment.

“People are clear that this wasn’t an impulsive or random act of violence. It either was self-inflicted or a professional hit,” Fendig said, based on the amount of evidence at the scene.

“It’s left the community very unsettled,” he said. “He was an elected official, a leader in his church and, on the surface, a strong family guy. It’s very disconcerting for everyone.”

Fulton County police are investigating after a man was fatally shot inside a famed megachurch in College Park.

The shooting broke out around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at World Changers Church International, led by televangelist Creflo Dollar. The victim was sent to South Fulton Hospital in critical condition but later died, according to police sources.

Police are looking for a black Subuaru in connection with the shooting.

Sources identified the victim as a member of the church’s production crew, and said the church hosts a bible study in the chapel every Wednesday.

Nearby, Bethune Elementary and McNair Middle schools were locked down for about an hour during the shooting investigation. Fulton County Schools spokeswoman Susan Hale said there were no disruptions to the schools.

World Changers Church International in suburban Atlanta became a crime scene Wednesday when a gunman entered and began shooting, killing one, police said.

The golden-domed megachurch, which claims about 30,000 members, is led by well-known prosperity minister Creflo Dollar.

The church has a morning service, but it was not clear whether the service was in progress at the time of the shooting in the chapel, Fulton County police spokeswoman Cpl. Kay Lester said.

Police were searching for the shooter, a man they described as armed and dangerous.

The victim, whose name was not immediately released, died at a hospital.

It was not known if the victim was targeted specifically by the gunman, Lester said.

Dollar has built an international religious empire, with broadcasts of his sermons beamed worldwide and speaking engagements in Europe.

Since he started his ministry in an elementary school cafeteria in 1986, Dollar has earned both praise and criticism.

Supporters say he has preached a message that’s financially empowered his parishioners and challenged the idea that Christians should be ashamed to be rich.

Critics call him “Cash-Flow Dollar,” and say his message perverts the Gospel.

Police are using tweets about a “stalker” to investigate the homicide of a girl who had been missing for a day in North Georgia.

Hannah Truelove, 16, was found dead Friday in a wooded area near the apartment she shared with her mother, one day after she was reported missing, police said.

A resident of the complex discovered the teen’s body, which showed signs of trauma, said Sgt. Kiley Sargent, spokesman for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

An autopsy has been completed but detectives are withholding the cause of death to avoid compromising the investigation, Sargent said.

Hannah tweeted days before her disappearance that she was being stalked.

“I got me an uglya– stalker,” she tweeted Aug. 12.

“So scared right now,” she wrote Aug. 18.

“I need to move out of these dang apartments,” she wrote Aug. 22, the day before she disappeared.

Sargent said investigators are “looking at different avenues,” including whether someone had been stalking Hannah.

“We have to determine what she meant by stalker,” Sargent said. “A stalker to a 16-year-old might not be a stalker to what may be Georgia code official. We’re trying to determine what she meant by that.”

A medical technician who was charged last week with causing a hepatitis C outbreak in New Hampshire was fired from a hospital in Arizona in April 2010, an official at the hospital said. The technician, David Kwiatkowski, was fired after being found unresponsive in a men’s locker room with syringes and needles; tests found cocaine and marijuana in his system, said the official, Monica Bowman, chief executive of Arizona Heart Hospital. Mr. Kwiatkowski, 33, is accused of stealing anesthetic drugs from Exeter Hospital in New Hampshire and contaminating syringes. His strain of hepatitis C has been diagnosed in 30 patients, and testing has been recommended for about 4,700 people in New Hampshire alone. Officials are still determining who should be tested elsewhere. They have confirmed that Mr. Kwiatkowski also worked in Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania before being hired in New Hampshire.

A woman who got a new tattoo to celebrate her role in the Olympic torch relay was shocked to discover it had been spelt incorrectly.

Jerri Peterson, from Atlanta in the US, carried the torch through Derby on 30 June after being nominated by the hotel chain she worked for.

Before coming to England, she decided to spend money on a tattoo to mark the occasion.

Only later did the 54-year-old realise it featured the mis-spelling “Oylmpic”.

Mrs Peterson was one of 70 international employees selected by her firm to take part in the relay as a thank you for her years of charity work.

She said: “I always wanted to have a tattoo but I never quite felt passionate about any one thing to have it put on my body permanently.

‘Artist felt bad’

“So when I was selected for this wonderful honour, I thought ‘that’s it – I’m ready to have my tattoo’.”

Jerri Peterson
Mrs Peterson wanted to mark her role in the Olympic torch relay

She booked a session with a “really good” tattoo artist in her home state of Georgia, and took a friend along for moral support.

Initially she was delighted with how it looked and it was only when she sent a photo of the tattoo to a friend that the spelling mistake was pointed out.

She said: “I looked at it and I was so disappointed. I called my husband and he giggled a little bit.

“Then I started laughing about it and I’ve laughed ever since.”

Mrs Peterson pointed out the mistake to the tattoo artist responsible but declined his offer to correct it.

She said: “He felt so bad when he found out.

“He wanted to fix it but I decided I want to keep it. It’s fine.

“It’s the Oy-limpics – it’s as unique as I am.”

VIDEO: The singer called 911 when a woman he believes is a stalker showed up at his door.

July 4, 2012

The 911 call that R&B/hip-hop star Usher Raymond made to police reporting a trespasser at his home last month has been released, and in it the singer can be heard detailing how the trespasser was ringing his doorbell and sitting outside his front door.

In the call, obtained and posted by the website TMZ.com, the star, who goes by just his first name professionally, tells the female operator: “Ma’am, I don’t know this woman. She rang my doorbell. … She’s just sitting there.”

He speaks softly, just above a whisper, and tells the operator that there are children and adults in the house.

“I think she’s a little delusional,” he said of the trespasser, telling the 911 operator that he didn’t know how the woman gained access to his home because it was in a gated community.

He also says she appeared to be charging her iPad outside his house.

“I think she’s a fan of some sort,” he said.

He also explained that the woman had come to his home before, and she had been let in under the mistaken assumption that she knew someone there. Police were called to escort her away.

The suspect, Darshelle Jones-Rakestraw, was arrested, charged with trespassing and admitted to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation. She allegedly claimed she was Usher’s wife, TMZ reported.

Jones-Rakestraw reportedly first came to the star’s home on June 23, then returned a day later, when she was arrested.

Usher has reportedly obtained a restraining order against Jones-Rakestraw.

In a YouTube video posted Wednesday, Jones-Rakestraw said she was not a stalker and claimed Usher had defamed her character, TMZ reported.

She also claimed the star had been giving her money and had promised to help her music career.

In an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts just days before the incident, Usher spoke of the pressures of raising his sons, Usher, 4, and Naviyd Ely, 3, who were both in the house the day Rakestraw was arrested.

“No one knows your children like you do,” he said. “It is taking the time to actively be there. It’s a day-in, day-out process.”

June 28, 2012

A doctor who advocates an austere “be hungry” diet defended a mother charged with murder after her teenage daughter died weighing only 40 pounds, claiming the cause of death may have been contaminated water and not the diet.

Ebony Berry is charged with child cruelty and murder in the June 15 death of her daughter, Markea Berry, 16, who officials say starved to death.

Dr. Andrew Chung, who calls Ebony Berry a “friend through Facebook” and a “sister in Christ,” suggested the jailed woman’s daughter “picked up something from the water when she was missing [in 2010],” which could have contributed to her weight loss.

Markea Berry wandered away from home in 2010 when she was 14. She was found safe at a Walmart the next day. Her mother told the Atlanta Journal Constitution at the time her daughter had special needs.

Chung visited Berry at a Cobb County, Ga., jail on June 22, a jail official confirmed to ABCNews.com.

“She is a friend through Facebook. I really didn’t want to see her, but she is a sister in Christ,” Chung said. “It was right for me to visit her.”

The Emory University-educated cardiologist, who preaches people be “wonderfully hungry” and eat no more than two pounds of food per day, said he met Berry at a health fair in 2008. He said she showed an interest in his teachings.

Berry, who lives in the same area as Chung, had reportedly been a follower of the doctor’s “Be Hungry” teachings, which he says are healthy for the heart and help combat obesity.

“Guard the body by holding the right amount of food,” he said, summing up his belief, which he says is rooted in science. “Everyone goes around talking as it’s starvation but medically it’s not. Starvation is terrible.”

Chung declined to further discuss Berry’s case, saying he didn’t want to speak for her.

On June 16, police responded to a 911 call where they found the body of the teenager, who was severely malnourished.

The teen, who weighed just 40 pounds at the time of her death in her Mableton, Ga., home and evidence showed she had been neglected, police said.

Her mother is being held without bond in the death of her daughter. She does not yet have a lawyer.

Chung has been called everything from “crazy” to a “caring” and “very educated” man whose findings are rooted in science and scripture.

Keith Ayoob, director of the nutrition clinic at the Rose F. Kennedy Center in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, called Chung’s two-pound rule “disturbing” and also pointed out it doesn’t account for water weight in many fruits and vegetables.

“This is a philosophy. I find it troublesome he is making recommendations about eating that are not science-based,” Ayoob said.

Chung points out on his site that he does not preach starvation, but rather being “wonderfully hungry.”

His two pound philosophy even extends to fruits and vegetables, despite their water content he said.

“It’s part of the food, it is food. We have plenty of people here in Georgia who are getting big eating watermelon,” Chung said.

In a video posted to his YouTube account, the cardiologist explained his logic. “When we’re 10 times hungrier, doesn’t food tastes 10 times better?” he asks. “And when food tastes 10 times better, that’s wonderful, isn’t it?… It’s a mathematical principle.”

In another video, Chung asks his 10-year-old daughter, whose food he weighs, how she is doing while the two waited in line at a Krispy Kreme shop.

“I’m wonderfully hungry,” she replies.

Rev. Charlotte Fairchild, a friend of Chung who lives in Hiram, Ga., said she was introduced to the two-pound rule by Chung and said no blame for Markea Berry’s death should be pointed in the direction of the doctor.

“If you were to eat two foot-long Subway sandwiches which weigh a pound each a day could you ever die of anorexia? No, you’d have to be running marathons. I wouldn’t even go that far,” Fairchild said.

After being on a number of diets, Fairchild said doesn’t understand why the “Be Hungry” plan is causing any more outrage than other programs.

“You cannot name a diet I have not been on,” she said. “It’s just stupid to think that weighing your food is more dangerous than eating nothing but meat and not have any roughage. We call that Atkins. It’s because of the concept of hunger people just don’t understand.”

11:09 a.m.                Friday, June 22, 2012

Four decades ago, the movie “Deliverance” introduced the lush north Georgia mountains to the world.

Though many in the region still bristle at the movie’s portrayal of locals as uneducated hillbillies, the film helped create the $20 million rafting and outdoor sports industry along the Chattooga River, which splits Georgia and South Carolina. Several movies have filmed in the area this year because of the natural beauty showcased in “Deliverance,” including next year’s “Killing Season” with Robert DeNiro and John Travolta.

This weekend, communities along the Chattooga are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the movie’s release with the first-ever Chattooga River Festival, even though some locals are unhappy with the idea of reminding the world of the area’s connection to the movie.

“It’s one of those cases where some good comes out of most everything,” said Stan Darnell, chairman of the Rabun County, Ga., board of commissioners. “Certainly a lot of good came out of that, as far as opening up film industry, the kayaking, the camping.”

Festival organizers say they hope the event can be an annual draw that raises money to preserve the Chattooga River and promotes environmental stewardship. The first year’s theme of “Deliverance” simply celebrates the movie that created the adventure sports industry there, said Pete Cleaveland, executive director of the Rabun County, Ga., Convention and Visitors Bureau and vice chairman of the festival committee.

Events include a concert by Ronny Cox, one of the four lead actors in the movie and who played on “Dueling Banjos” in the movie. The iconic tune features the “Yankee Doodle” riff and features prominently in the movie. The schedule also includes a screening of “Deliverance” at the civic center in tiny Clayton, Ga., and a music festival in nearby Long Creek, S.C. at Chattooga Belle Farm.

There are also art shows and a river cleanup.

Cleaveland said he’s expecting up to 3,000 people at this year’s festival and he hopes that attendance will grow in future years. Each year will have a different theme, he said.

“We really want to raise awareness of the river and this great conservation area we have around the river,” he said.

Ed Land, who owns Chattooga Belle Farm and is on the committee that organized the festival, said some complained when organizers first discussed linking the festival to the movie.

“There was some pretty stiff opposition, but as a committee, we looked at it, figured it is what it is, and figured people will get over it. It is going to benefit the people of the area whether they like it or not,” Land said.

The idea drew criticism during Rabun County commission meetings, where the board ultimately turned down a request for $1,000 funding for the festival. Darnell said that had nothing to do with the theme and was purely a budgetary decision.

Still, others on both sides of the river that served as the fictional Cahulawassee River in the movie spoke out against the festival’s theme.

“It portrays Rabun County as backward, uneducated, scary, deviant inbred hillbillies. Even today when ‘Deliverance’ is mentioned, it raises unpleasant unfounded images of the wonderful Appalachian hardworking people that live in this region,” said Darnell. “I would like it more if it had just been the Chattooga River Festival. I would not have had ‘Deliverance’ as part of it.”

The movie is based on a novel by Georgia native James Dickey, who told The Associated Press in 1994 that he got the idea for “Deliverance” while living in an Italian village.

“I saw a figure standing at the edge of a cliff,” said Dickey, who died in 1997. “And I thought: ‘Who is it? What is he doing there? Did he come from the woods, inland … or did he come up it? Why would he do that?’ It all began to come together. Then I put a river down there.”

The region is nestled among the state and national forests where Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina meet. Rabun County has just 17,000 people, but the population nearly doubles in the summer as river guides and city dwellers escape to the mountains for a few months.

The state’s film commission, established the year after “Deliverance” was nominated for an Academy Award for best picture, traces its roots back to the movie’s filming in north Georgia. Most people in the area either worked on the movie or know someone who was in it.

Hotel bookings are up for this weekend’s festival, and organizers have seen a marked increase in interest because of the link to the film.

“I think most everyone now is supportive,” John Dillard, owner of the Dillard House inn in Clayton, Ga., said about the movie. “You’ve always got a few curmudgeons around, but maybe they’ll give us a break and let us have some fun.”

Her father says she’s just a daddy’s girl with some unladylike hobbies. The FBI and the ATF disagree.

Celia Alchemy Savage, 23, was arrested by federal and local officials after a Wednesday search of her Cornelia, Georgia home allegedly turned up two pipe bombs, a pistol, suspected marijuana and methamphetamine and alleged drug paraphernalia. She is being held on federal weapons, explosives and drug charges, and has been denied bond.

According to the criminal complaint, when an ATF agent asked Savage what there was to do in Cornelia, Georgia, she said, “Blow things up.” The agent said that Savage also stated that she “likes to blow up toilets in the woods.”

Savage allegedly told authorities that “manufacturing explosive devices and detonating them for recreation was her hobby,” and that she had built five to seven pipe bombs for fun.

“Savage stated she was aware that it was wrong, or against the law, to manufacture the destructive devices,” alleged the ATF agent in the criminal complaint, “but claimed she has a passion for it.”

The complaint alleges that the drugs, drug paraphernalia, “numerous pills,” pistol and bomb components were found in a bedroom of the residence that Savage described as her “lab.” According to the ATF agent, Savage admitted that she had used marijuana “the previous day and methamphetamine two months ago.”

A video of Savage blowing up a toilet in the woods can still be seen on YouTube. Savage’s father, Tommy Savage, confirmed to investigative reporter Mark Winne of ABC Atlanta affiliate WSB-TV that his daughter was the person seen in the video.

Savage’s Facebook profile, which is also still on the web, lists “explosives” as an interest, her political orientation as “anarchist” and her status as “Push to test. Release to detonate.”

“I despise all law enforcement and any governing authority,” she says in her “about Celia” section. “I am not one for selective targeting but mass destruction.” Various photos show Savage with high-powered weapons, holding a snake, riding a motorcycle, in a kickboxing stance and posing with her father and a dead animal.

The profile also includes a paraphrased quote from Scott Adams, the creator of the quotes from George S. Patton and U.S. Grant: “There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.”

Savage’s father Tommy told Winne of WSB-TV that his daughter was a daddy’s girl and a church-going college student who is not a member of any radical group. “She likes to hunt and fish,” said Savage. “She loves shooting. She goes sky diving. All kinds of stuff like that that you wouldn’t really typically think of a young lady doing.” He denied that she was a drug user, but said he worried about some of the people with whom she’d been hanging out.

Tommy Savage also said, however, that his daughter shared his distrust of government. “I think everybody ought to be able to set on their property and do whatever the heck they want to,” he told Winne.

Tommy Savage declined a request from ABC News for comment. His daughter’s court-appointed lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The family of a Georgia man who died when his heart couldn’t take a three-way sex romp was awarded a hefty $3 million payout by a jury, according to reports.

William Martinez’s estate was originally seeking $5 million in a medical malpractice case that claimed a cardiologist failed to warn the 31-year-old to stay away from physical activity. While Gwinnett County jurors sided with the family Tuesday, they agreed to a lesser amount after finding Martinez was 40% liable for his own death, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday.

Martinez, a husband and father of two, was engaged in a threesome with a friend and another woman who was not his wife, according to the newspaper. He died March 12, 2009.

The week before, Martinez reportedly went to the CardioVascular Group in Lawrenceville, Ga., complaining of chest pains that shot up his arm, said CBS affiliate WAOK in Atlanta.

A test was scheduled for eight days later, but the day before the test he decided to engage in the extramarital hanky panky, according to reports.

His attorneys argued that attending cardiologist Dr. Sreeni Gangasani neglected to tell Martinez to refrain from getting too physical — presumably including any sexual activity — before the test was performed.

Martinez’s legal team said he had high blood pressure and his heart was at risk of having clogged arteries, The Journal-Constitution reported.

Attorneys at Edmond & Lindsay in Atlanta couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday, The Journal-Constitution said, and it was unclear whether Martinez’s wife or his two sons would be benefitting financially from the judgment.

The trial began last Monday in state civil court.

An attorney for Gangasani told The Journal-Constitution, “We’re definitely going to appeal the verdict and the judgment.”

The last of 11 people facing felony hazing charges tied to a Florida A&M University band member’s death turned themselves in on Sunday, four days after prosecutors announced the charges, the state said.

Lasherry Codner, 20, is in Orange County jail after reporting to authorities Sunday, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said in a statement. The department had said Friday that it had been in contact with her family in Georgia.

She joins 10 others who have reported to jails throughout Florida after being charged with felony hazing in the death of 26-year-old Robert Champion.

State law provides a prison term of up to six years for a conviction on this charge, Ninth Judicial Circuit State Attorney Lawson Lamar said last week.

The FAMU Marching 100 drum major died after collapsing on a band bus after a November 2011 football game in Orlando, Florida. He died within an hour after being badly beaten, medical examiners reported.

Two others are charged with misdemeanor hazing, which typically carries at most a year-long prison sentence.

Among those facing felony hazing charges is Aaron Golson, who was also charged last December with hazing and felony battery, after another FAMU band member, Bria Hunter, said she had suffered a cracked femur, deep bone bruise and blood clots after being beaten repeatedly on the thighs.

As to Champion’s case, the victim’s mother, Pam Champion, has said her family is disappointed the suspects didn’t face more serious charges. She also accuses authorities of botching the investigation, saying they didn’t properly process the bus for evidence and failed to immediately question students who were on board.

Deputy Ginette Rodriguez, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, has defended the investigation.

“I know our deputies questioned everyone available,” Rodriguez said. “I can assure you our detectives conducted a thorough and complete investigation, as we do in every case.”

Earlier this year, the Champion family filed a negligence lawsuit against the bus company and its driver, and lawyer Chris Chestnut has said the family plans to sue the university as well.

Champion’s death brought renewed public scrutiny to hazing, a practice that has gone on for years despite what the Tallahassee university said had been efforts to eradicate the problem.

Some university band members have said Champion died after taking part in an annual rite of passage called “Crossing Bus C,” an initiation process in which pledges attempt to run down the center aisle from the front door of the bus to the back while being punched, kicked and otherwise assaulted by senior members.

An estimated 30 people were on the vehicle at the time.

An autopsy found “extensive contusions of his chest, arms, shoulder and back,” as well as “evidence of crushing of areas of subcutaneous fat,” medical examiners reported.
