A New York City woman has been arrested by federal authorities who say she tried to scam donors by posing as a relative of one of the children killed at a Connecticut elementary school.

Thirty-seven-year-old Nouel Alba was arrested Thursday and charged with lying to FBI agents.

Federal prosecutors say she used her Facebook account, telephone calls and text messages to seek donations for what she called a “funeral fund.”

Authorities say Alba denied seeking the donations when she was contacted by FBI agents investigating charity scams related to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. A gunman killed 20 children and six adults there on Dec. 14.

Alba, of the Bronx, appeared Thursday in federal court in Hartford and was released on $50,000 bond. A number listed for her was not in service.

December 15, 2012

One was a first-grade teacher who reportedly threw herself in front of the gunman to shield her students. Another was a well-liked principal.

Both were among those killed when Adam Lanza, 20, stormed into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., with guns blazing Friday, killing six adults and 20 children before killing himself.

Lanza also killed a seventh adult in the rampage — his mother, Nancy Lanza. She was killed in her home, shot in the face before her son’s assault on the school, sources told ABC News.

Few other victims’ names had emerged as of early this morning, but that was expected to change at a police news conference. Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance said officers had identified the names of all the victims at the school.

“They were successful working with the medical examiners establishing positive identification,” he said. “Our detectives then went and made notification to all of the family members.”

The few that emerged early came with compelling stories attached.

Vicki Soto, 27, one of the adult victims, loved being a teacher, her cousin, Jim Wiltsie, told ABC News’ Chris Cuomo Friday. In fact, her first-grade students’ safety was such a high priority that Soto reportedly lost her life protecting them.

“The family was informed that she was trying to shield, get her children into a closet and protect them from harm, and by doing that put herself between the gunman and the children,” Wiltsie said. “And that’s when she was tragically shot and killed.

“I’m very proud to have known Vicki,” Wiltsie added. “Her life dream was to be a teacher. And her instincts kicked in when she saw there was harm coming to her students.

“It brings peace to know that Vicki was doing what she loved, protecting the children,” he said. “And in our eyes, she is a hero.”

The circumstances of Dawn Hochsprung’s death are less clear, but those who have spoken have had nice things to say about the Sandy Hook principal.

“When we had our orientation, you could tell she loved her job,” Brenda Lediski, a parent, told ABC News by phone.

Hochsprung, 47, only became principal of Sandy Hook in recent years, according to a local news report.

“She was always enthusiastic, always smiling, always game to do anything,” Kristin Larson, a former PTA secretary, told the Boston Globe. “When I saw her at the beginning of the school year, she was hugging everyone.”

Another was a psychologist — preparing to retire — who had seen generations of students through their parents’ divorces and difficult days.

Dawn Hochsprung, the principal of Sandy Hook Elementary School, and Mary Sherlach, a school psychologist, were among the six adults killed at the school in the mass shooting on Friday, educators gunned down alongside the children they cared for as if they were their own.

Authorities did not release an official list of the victims’ names, but the other four were believed to be school staff members.

The unimaginable loss of 20 children consumed much of the nation on Friday. But in Newtown, Conn., a tight-knit community of about 25,000 bonded by its schools, a profound, personal ache was felt also for the school staff members who were killed.

Ms. Sherlach, 56, was remembered for her many years of helping students cope with problems that they were unprepared to handle.

And Ms. Hochsprung, 47, was mourned as a creative and dedicated educator who had quickly won over children and adults alike.

“I’m not surprised she gave her life in this fashion, trying to protect her students,” said Gerald Stomski, the first selectman of Woodbury, Conn., who knew Ms. Hochsprung.

Grief-stricken Sandy Hook parents spoke of the elementary school as an extension of their own homes, a haven of support for children and their families.

That environment was fostered by Ms. Hochsprung, who began her job there in 2010 and had used the time since then to tamp down any nervousness children felt approaching the proverbial “principal’s office.” Before taking the job at Sandy Hook, she had worked at other schools in Connecticut.

“She was not the kind of principal I remembered as a kid,” said Diane Licata, the mother of a first grader and a second grader at the school. “She really reached out to the students and made them feel comfortable with her. She definitely took that extra step.”

Ms. Hochsprung organized festive days she called Wacky Wednesdays, when students were encouraged to wear goofy clothes that did not match. She had students dress up as their favorite storybook characters, and she was known for dressing up herself. Sometimes, she brought her poodle to school.

She was no distant authority figure. Ms. Licata said her young children, who often skimped on details of their days, regularly came home with stories of what Ms. Hochsprung had done that day.

But for all the levity, Ms. Hochsprung also took education very seriously. She was the one who distributed long articles to colleagues about policy debates in Washington and highlighted news from the latest speech by Arne Duncan, the secretary of education.

She was also unusually tech savvy. She kept an active Twitter feed documenting the school — “In a fourth grade classroom right now,” she wrote in a recent message. She said she was impressed “by the caliber of instruction and by students’ deep thinking!”

Ms. Hochsprung believed that many students engaged better with electronic screens than with blackboards, and she made sure her teachers had iPads in the classroom. Then, she organized “Appy Hour” sessions to discuss the most useful teaching apps.

Lillian Bittman, former chairwoman of the Newtown Board of Education, helped choose Ms. Hochsprung for the position. She recalled an eager applicant, filled with ideas and focused on “making sure we were turning out critical thinkers, making sure the children weren’t just turning out rote learning.”

Ms. Hochsprung and her husband had planned to retire someday to the Adirondacks, where they owned a home, a former neighbor, Bill LaCroix, said.

If Ms. Hochsprung was a relatively new face in the school, Ms. Sherlach was a fixture, a reliable ally for generations of children in need of counsel.

“When somebody had a personal tragedy in their lives that affected their children, then Mary would be a part of trying to help them come up with a solution for that child,” said Ms. Bittman, whose three children graduated from Sandy Hook Elementary.

Ms. Sherlach lived in Trumbull, Conn., with her husband, William, a financial adviser with Morgan Stanley in Fairfield. The couple have two grown daughters, a high school choral teacher who lives in New Jersey and a chemistry doctoral student at Georgetown University, according to a biography of her husband posted on his company’s Web site.

As night fell on Friday, mourners streamed in and out of Ms. Sherlach’s home.

John Button, 57, a friend of Ms. Sherlach’s husband, said Ms. Sherlach was getting ready to retire.

“It was going to be her last year — that’s what she said,” he said. “She loved her job,” he added. “She’s done this for her whole career.”

He recalled vacationing in the Finger Lakes region of New York with the couple, who have a house there. He was supposed to play golf on Saturday morning with Mr. Sherlach.

“It’s ironic,” Mr. Button said. “At a time when kids need help, it was the school psychologist that was sacrificed.”

Adam Lanza has been identified as the suspected shooter in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Conn., the Associated Press reports.

Police initially identified the shooter as Ryan Lanza, the 24-year-old elder brother of Adam Lanza. According to the AP, the error occurred when a law enforcment official transposed the names of the two men.

From the Assocaited Press’s Pete Yost:

WASHINGTON — The suspect in the Connecticut school shootings is Adam Lanza, 20, the son of a teacher at the school where the shootings occurred, a law enforcement official said Friday. A second law enforcement official says the boy’s mother, Nancy Lanza, is presumed dead.Adam Lanza’s older brother, Ryan, 24, of Hoboken, N.J., is being questioned by police, said the first official. Earlier, a law enforcement official mistakenly transposed the brothers’ first names.

Both officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record about the developing criminal investigation.

The first official said Adam Lanza is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to the second official, the suspect drove to the scene of the shootings in his mother’s car. Three guns were found at the scene – a Glock and a Sig Sauer, both pistols – and a .223-caliber rifle. The rifle was recovered from the back of a car at the school. The two pistols were recovered from inside the school.

The official also said Lanza’s girlfriend and another friend are missing in New Jersey.

Meanwhile, former Jersey Journal staff writer Brett Wilshe said he has spoken with Ryan Lanza of Hoboken, who told Wilshe the shooter may have had Ryan Lanza’s identification.

Ryan Lanza has a Facebook page that posted updates Friday afternoon that read that “it wasn’t me” and “I was at work.”

The school volunteer and PTA president allegedly targeted by parents who planted drugs in her car said she thought she was the victim of a joke when police came to question her.

“I thought I was on a joke show, like someone was playing a joke on me,” Kelli Peters told KTLA.

Authorities say that an Irvine couple planted drugs in the volunteer’s car because they were displeased with her supervision of their son, a student at Plaza Vista Elementary School in Irvine.

“They tried to make me look like the worst person you could be when you’re involved with a school,” Peters told KTLA. “I just don’t understand it.”

The parents arrested in the case — Kent and Jill Easter, both 38 and both attorneys — had previously sued Peters twice in 2010, though both cases were later dismissed, according to Orange County court records.

When announcing the Easters had been arrested on felony charges Tuesday, the Orange County district attorney’s office said the couple devised a plan to get the volunteer arrested.

Prosecutors say Kent Easter drove to the volunteer’s home shortly after midnight on Feb. 16, 2011, and put a bag of prescription pain medication and marijuana, along with a used marijuana pipe, in plain sight in the woman’s unlocked car.

He then allegedly called police from a public phone in Newport Beach and falsely reported seeing the volunteer — whom he identified by name — driving erratically to the school and hiding drugs behind the driver’s seat of her car.

Irvine police went to the school the night and found the drugs, but after speaking with the volunteer and searching her home, found “no evidence to support drug use or possession,” the Orange County district attorney’s office said.

Detectives later turned their attention to the Easters after determining the drugs were likely planted in the woman’s car. Video surveillance from a hotel near Kent Easter’s Newport Beach office showed him allegedly making the initial 911 call, and prosecutors said the Easters were texting and calling each other during that time.

Farrah Emami, a spokeswoman for the Orange County district attorney’s office, said investigators had no indication other parents were upset with the volunteer, whom she described as “completely professional.”

“This was obviously something they had sought out and planned with the intent of having her arrested,” Emami said.

Calls to Kent Easter at his law office were not immediately returned.

The couple, who are free on $20,000 bail each, are scheduled to be arraigned next month in Orange County Superior Court. If convicted, they could face up to three years in state prison.
