After ducking comment for days, Sen. Robert Menendez is forcefully denying allegations he engaged with prostitutes in the Dominican Republic, calling the claims false “smears.”

Menendez told reporters on Monday that he had done nothing wrong. His voice rose with anger as he described “anonymous, nameless, faceless individuals” who he said have driven false stories into the mainstream media.

“That’s what they’ve done successfully,” he said his first public remarks since the allegations began to spread on Wednesday. “The bottom line is all of those smears are absolutely false.”

Menendez’s public denial came after the FBI conducted a search of the West Palm Beach offices of a Florida doctor who also was the senator’s biggest political donor in his re-election campaign last year. A week before the November election, The Daily Caller, a conservative website, reported that Menendez had used a business jet owned by Dr. Salomon Melgen to fly to the Dominican Republican for trysts with prostitutes. None of the allegations have been substantiated. It is unclear whether the FBI raid of Melgen’s office was related to Menendez.

The reports have dogged Menendez, 59, as he has assumed the chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, succeeding former Sen. John Kerry, who resigned last week to become secretary of state. The Senate Ethics Committee is investigating the case.

Separately on Monday, a prominent lawyer in the Dominican Republic denied claims that he hosted outings involving Menendez and prostitutes on his yacht. Attorney Vinicio Castillo Seman said in Santo Domingo that he would seek a criminal investigation into the source of the reports, which he called “absurd.”

Castillo, the son of a presidential adviser and the brother of a member of the Dominican Republic Congress, said he has known Menendez for about 15 years but has never seen him with a prostitute. Prostitution is legal in the Caribbean country.

“I have never seen him behave in any way that was not impeccable and dignified,” Castillo said.

While repeatedly denying any meetings with prostitutes, Menendez did acknowledge to reporters that he flew on Melgen’s private plane and failed, initially, to properly pay for trips. He told reporters he reimbursed some $58,500 from his personal funds after it “came to my attention” and said it was unfortunate that the trips “fell through the cracks.”

“I was in a big travel schedule in 2010 as the chairman of the DSCC” — the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee — “plus my own campaign getting ready for the election cycle,” Menendez said.

Menendez’s office said last week that the senator had reimbursed Melgen on Jan. 4. His office said Menendez’s reimbursement was for the full cost of two flights on Melgen’s plane to the Dominican Republic for personal trips in 2010.

Menendez took a third flight — in May 2010 — on Melgen’s plane for a DSCC fundraiser. The trip was reported to the Federal Election Commission as a $5,400 expenditure by the DSCC for the use of Melgen’s plane.

Melgen is a native of the Dominican Republic but has lived in the U.S. since 1980, while Menendez is of Cuban-American descent. He is divorced and has two children. Menendez’s office has said Melgen has been a friend and supporter for many years.

Numerous charges have been filed against a New York woman who was allegedly drunk and wearing only an unzipped jacket when she crashed her car into a stone retaining wall in New Jersey and then drove off.

The crash occurred early Friday in the northwestern New Jersey community of Sparta Township.

A township officer stopped the car just minutes after the crash. The driver, 36-year-old Catherine Giaquinto, of Warwick, allegedly told police she couldn’t remember the accident or where she was going.

After noticing some clothes in her car, officers asked Giaquinto to get dressed, which she did after several minutes.

It’s not known if Giaquinto has retained a lawyer. A phone number for her could not be located Monday.

A woman was brutally stabbed in the chest more than a dozen times while shopping with her infant child at a Bed, Bath & Beyond store on Thursday evening.

Tyrik Haynes, 19, was charged with attempted murder in the attack in Middletown, New Jersey on Friday and held on $1 million bail. He had previously been charged with torturing a cat.

Haynes allegedly rushed upon Kerri Dalton, 29, with no warning as she pushed her son’s stroller through the store.

The teenager then allegedly stabbed Dalton repeatedly in the chest, puncturing both her lungs. Incredibly, she still managed to dial 911 for help.

Dalton experienced significant blood loss and was airlifted from the Middletown store to Jersey Shore Medical Center where she was stabilized.

She remains in critical condition. Kerri’s husband, Roger Dalton, told CBS on Friday: ‘She’s holding up, she’s strong, she’s a fighter, she’s my best friend.’

‘I want to thank everyone for keeping us in their prayers,’ Mr Dalton continued.

‘She’s a newborn mother; thank God the baby wasn’t touched,’ he added. ‘This guy came out of nowhere and I love my wife.’

Meanwhile, in his first court appearance on Friday, Haynes was charged with attempted murder, child endangerment, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

This isn’t his first brush with the law. In December, Haynes was charged with animal cruelty for setting a cat on fire on Christmas Eve.

The Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told Asbury Park Press that Haynes was charged with using a lighter and aerosol spray to ignite the box while the animal was inside.

The cat escaped but was later found dead from its injuries. Haynes is due in municipal court for that crime on February 11.

Workers at the Petco on the same strip as the Bed, Bath & Beyond where Kerri Dalton was stabbed told reporters that Haynes often went into the store to stare at the animals.

Clinical psychologist Dr Bart Rossi told CBS that cruelty to animals is often a prelude to violence against humans.

‘This is not the result of a couple of bad days or a bad month. This is someone that’s developed personality problems over time,’ Rossi said.

January 8, 2013         3:13pm

New Jersey police arrested a man who scaled an iconic Jersey shore roller coaster, swept out to sea following superstorm Sandy, and planted an American flag.

News 12-New Jersey identified the man as Christopher Angelo, 38, who told the station he was trying to raise awareness for victims of the storm.

A police boat met Angelo as he walked to the bottom of the coaster. The boat brought him ashore where he was handcuffed and arrested.

The Jet Star, already a Jersey shore landmark made popular by the MTV reality show “Jersey Shore,” gained new fame when it was tossed into the sea during the storm.

Congress last week passed a $9 billion relief package for East Coast areas affected by the storm, after the House balked on voting for a $60 billion aid bill.

Dive teams relaunched the search of a partially frozen New Jersey lake this morning for two missing teenagers who were walking boats across the lake when they fell through the ice Monday night, but officials said the search is now a body-recovery effort instead of a rescue attempt.

Police said the two teens fell through the ice at Budd Lake in Mount Olive Township in Morris County. The search was called off Monday night at 9:30. Police believe the teenagers fell through the ice at around 6:19 p.m., WABC-TV reported.

The Morris County prosecutor’s office this morning said New Jersey state police have an airboat with divers on the lake in an effort to facilitate the recovery mission.

A man sitting on his porch along the shore of Budd Lake Monday evening said he heard calls for help from the partially frozen lake. He said that he walked toward a light, which might have been a cellphone. The man said that he heard two people saying they did not want to die, WABC reported.

The voices, and the light, eventually disappeared.

WABC identified one of the missing teens as 15-year-old Clyde Schimanski III. His father said that, according to witnesses, his son might have died making his own rescue attempt.

“Clyde was out there, and he seen the kid go through the ice,” Clyde Schimanski Jr. said. “And Clyde went to save him on his bicycle. And then they both went in. And then people on the shore heard them screaming. He was a very good child. I’m going to miss him a lot.”

Mount Olive Mayor Rob Greenbaum indicated in a post on his Facebook page Monday night that the two teenagers were dead.

“I am sad to report that we likely lost two young adults in Mount Olive this evening. May God bless their families and help ease their pain,” he wrote.

The incident at Budd Lake is the latest in a winter that has seen numerous accidents on lakes across the United States. Earlier in the day Monday, halfway across the country in Wisconsin, eight fishermen had to be rescued from an icy floe in the bay of Green Bay when high winds caused the ice to break free.

On Sunday, a woman was caught on camera clinging to the ice on the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio. She floated in the bone-chilling waters for an hour before first responders pulled her to safety.

Experts say unseasonably warm temperatures have caused a January thaw from coast to coast, leaving usually thick ice dangerously thin.

In December, a sledding excursion on a Wrightwood, Calif., lake went wrong, causing one man to fall and leading to a chain reaction. Nine minutes later, nearly a dozen people were pulled out of the water. All were unharmed.

“If you fall through the ice, a life jacket will keep you afloat and reduce the hypothermia affects,” Paul Segura of the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Still, experts say cold water kills quickly, making these situations not only dangerous, but often deadly.

Let’s face it.  Teens have sex.  Parents may choose to ignore it, and teens may choose to deny it, but almost 50 percent of American high school students are having sex, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. And each year, millions of those sexually active teens contract sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes and HIV.

Now one doctor hopes to curb the spread of STDs in this tech savvy group with a smartphone app that lets users “bump” their STD status.

It’s called ‘safe bumping,’” said Dr. Michael Nusbaum, the New Jersey developer of MedXSafe, a feature of the new app called MedXCom.  “If you happen to be out at a bar or a fraternity house or wherever, and you meet someone, you can then bump phones and exchange contact information and STD status.”

The app’s special feature, according to Nussbaum, encourages dating singles to go to the doctor for regular STD checks.  Those who screen negative can ask their doctors to document their STD-free status on the app, allowing users to share the information with whomever they choose.

An alarming 19 million new sexually transmitted infections occur each year, and rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea are on the rise, according to a new report released this month by the CDC.  More than 1.4 million chlamydia infections were reported in 2011, up 8 percent from the previous year.  Cases of gonorrhea were up by 4 percent, marking the second consecutive year of increases.

Nearly half of all infections occur in young people, between the ages of 15 to 24, a group that can be particularly devastated by the associated health effects.

“[Some] undetected and untreated STDs can increase a person’s risk for HIV and cause other serious health consequences, such as infertility,” said Mary McFarlane, an acting chief in the Division of STD Prevention at the CDC.  Harnessing modern social networking technology to prevent these infections may appeal to a younger tech-savvy generation.

MedXSafe is just one of several Internet-based programs devoted to easing confidential STD-status sharing between sexual partners.  Services like Qpid.me, whose slogan is Spread the Love, Nothing Else and U Should Know, designed by a former college student and his girlfriend, also allow their users to check on a partner’s STD status.

But could these services offer a false sense of security to teens who believe that, with a simple phone bump, they have the green light to have unprotected sex?

“It can take months for HIV to show up on a test,” said Renee Williams, executive director of SAFE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to abstinence education.  “So you can test negative today, go out on Friday night and have sex, and then get retested later and find out that you had HIV all along.”

The app does nothing to prevent unplanned pregnancy, and may even encourage high-risk behaviors that young people might otherwise not have been tempted to try, said Williams.

Nor is the app likely to be completely reliable, said Dr. J. Joseph Speidel, director of communication at the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health.

“Does it come with a condom?” asked Dr. Richard Besser, ABC’s chief health and medical editor, who’s also a pediatrician and former acting director at the CDC.

But the app’s creator said it does promote regular STD testing and encourages potential partners to openly discuss safe sex practices.

“We’re recognizing that this behavior is going to take place no matter what we do or what we say,” said Nusbaum.  “I have friends that are nuns and I’ve run this by them, and they also agree that it’s promoting safer behaviors.”

Although each program promises to keep health information strictly confidential, none are immune from cyber attacks.

But such attacks would not expose any users who have an STD, according to Nusbaum.  MedXSafe does not allow doctors to upload information about any tests that come back positive, including HIV.  A user with an infection is simply treated for the STD and then retested.  And that user is only confirmed STD-free via the app once subsequent test results come back negative.

Still, it is too early to tell whether these services will become popular with teens.  Lingering social stigma surrounding STDs might make potential partners reluctant to mention such an app when out at a party.

“It’s a big personal step to bring up using such an app,” said Noah Bloom, creator of a smartphone app called Jiber, which uses the same “bump” technology to electronically connect new friends.  “Who really wants anything in the way of getting lucky?”
