The Ravens thought highly of running back Bernard Pierce when they drafted him in the third round out of Temple.

But it was tough to expect then that he’d end up competing with franchise running back Ray Rice for carries by the end of the season.

“We liked him a lot,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said. “But I don’t think we thought he’d be this good of a player.”

Pierce did, however.

“I always thought that I could help out,” Pierce said. “I always thought that I could contribute in any way possible to help this team out and become a better player along the way.”

Pierce has come on strong down the stretch, giving the Ravens a stellar one-two punch out of the backfield. He’s an explosive running back with good power that fits perfectly in the team’s running scheme. And he’ll likely figure to be a big part of the Ravens’ offensive gameplan for Super Bowl XLVII.

“I call him a poor man’s Adrian Peterson,” Running Backs Coach Wilbert Montgomery said. “He’s better than Ray was when Ray was a rookie. He brings more power. He brings more pizzazz. He brings more explosion. Ray was a guy that could make you miss and make big plays. BP is a guy that can wear you down and make big plays. BP is a guy that gets stronger as the game goes on.”

Rice has still shouldered the bulk of the ball carrying duties in the postseason, rushing 64 times compared to Pierce’s 27 carries.

But when Pierce has been in the game, he’s shown big play potential and averaged 6.3 yards per carry compared to 3.9 for Rice.

“We’re very blessed and we’re lucky to have these guys,” Harbaugh said. “Bernard Pierce has just been a guy that’s lit it up for us this year. Their two styles kind of contrast perfectly. They’re different kinds of running backs.”

The challenge for the coaching staff is to determine how they split up the carries. Rice is still the starting back, but Pierce’s emergence has him pushing for opportunities to get on the field.

“It’s kind of like, ‘How do you manage these two guys?’” Montgomery said. “It’s hard to take Ray off the field.”

“Right now, Ray is at a good point. It’s about the team. That’s what we’ve been selling. We need both of those guys to play almost equal time right now so we can get this win. That’s all we’re looking for are those wins. Ray understands that.”

Former Utes Paul Kruger and Ma’ake Kemoeatu have played major roles this season while keying Baltimore’s Super Bowl run. Both are expected to start this Sunday against San Francisco.

Although Kruger was a standout at defensive end for the Utes, he’s made his mark playing outside linebacker in Baltimore’s 3-4 defense. Now in his fourth season Kruger is one of the Raven’s impact players along with Corey Graham, according Clifton Brown of the Sporting News.

“(Terrell) Suggs, Ray LewisEd Reed and Haloti Ngata get most of the headlines for the Ravens’ defense. But without Kruger and Graham, the Ravens don’t make it to Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots,” wrote Brown prior to Baltimore’s AFC championship win over New England.

Kruger contributed four tackles in that game, but it was against the Indianapolis Colts in the first round where he made perhaps his biggest impact. In that game he wreaked all sorts of havoc with four tackles, 2.5 sacks and one key forced fumble.

In Baltimore’s improbable 38-35 double overtime win over Denver he made a play that effectively ended the game.

“Perhaps his most vital play, however, came when he chased Peyton Manning out of the pocket in the closing stages of the Ravens’ AFC divisional round nail-biter against the Denver Broncos, forcing Manning to throw the interception that effectively ended the game,” wrote Martin Rogers of Yahoo Sports.

Kruger had 46 tackles in the regular season and led the Ravens with nine sacks.

Kemoeatu has been a mainstay on the interior of Baltimore’s defensive line after sitting out last season with injury and weight issues. Now in his tenth year the former Ute is playing his best football when it matters most.

The mammoth 6-foot-5, 345 lineman recorded his first sack of the year in Baltimore’s final regular season game against Cincinnati.

“Everything is tweaked up just right, everybody knows where they need to be and what they’re supposed to be doing,” Kemoeatu told Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun following the game. “Of course, it took the whole season, but I feel like the defense has got everything down at the right time to make a run.”

Kemoeatu started 13 games for the Ravens in the regular season and all three postseason games. His best effort of the year may have come in the AFC Championship game win over New England where he had a season-high five tackles.

Baltimore Ravens safety Bernard Pollard has put a voice to what many people are fearing in the high-impact world of the NFL: Someone dying on field.

“The league is trying to move in the right direction with player safety,” he told CBSSports.com, “but, at the same time, coaches want bigger, stronger and faster year in and year out. And that means you’re going to keep getting big hits and concussions and blown-out knees. The only thing I’m waiting for, and, Lord, I hope it doesn’t happen, is a guy dying on the field. We’ve had everything else happen there except for a death. We understand what we signed up for, and it” stinks.

As a result, Pollard says it is quite possible the league won’t even exist one day.

“Thirty years from now,” he said, “I don’t think it will be in existence. I could be wrong. It’s just my opinion, but I think with the direction things are going, where they want to lighten up, and they’re throwing flags and everything else, there’s going to come a point where fans are going to get fed up with it.

“Guys are getting fined, and they’re talking about, ‘Let’s take away the strike zone’ and ‘Take the pads off’ or ‘Take the helmets off.’ It’s going to be a thing where fans aren’t going to want to watch it anymore.”

But it was the possibility of an on-field death that Pollard kept coming back to.

“Like I said, I pray it never happens, but you’ve got guys who are 350 pounds running 4.5 and 4.4s, and these owners and coaches want scout-run blockers and linemen to move walls. At the same time, they tell you, ‘Don’t hit here, and don’t hit there, or we’ll take your money.’ Like I said, I hope I’m wrong, but I just believe one day there’s going to be a death that takes place on the field because of the direction we’re going.”

The Ravens are going to the Super Bowl. Avenging last year’s bitter loss to the Patriots in the AFC championship game, Baltimore took apart New England in the second half, punching their ticket to New Orleans with a thorough 28-13 victory in front of a stunned announced crowd of 68,756 at Gillette Stadium.

“We know what it felt like walking off that field losers” last year, said Ravens safety Bernard Pollard. “They beat us and we said we weren’t going to walk off again like that.”

Instead, the Ravens bounced off, one by one, celebrating with their fans, who had come down to the first couple of rows at the stadium.

Safety Ed Reed, who will play in his first Super Bowl and do it in his home state, sang, “We got two tickets to paradise.” Linebacker Terrell Suggs yelled, “We came, we saw and we conquered.” Defensive end Arthur Jones held up a sign that read, “AFC champions.”

In the Super Bowl for the second time in team history and the first time in 12 years, the Ravens will play the San Francisco 49ers, who beat the Atlanta Falcons, 28-24, in the NFC championship game. The game, Feb. 3 at the Superdome, will pit Ravens Coach John Harbaugh against his younger brother, Jim, the coach of the 49ers.

“I don’t know if we had a dream this big,” John Harbaugh said. “We had a few dreams, we had a few fights, we had a few arguments. We’ll try to stay out of that business. We’ll let the two teams duke it out.”

John Harbaugh’s team was at its best when it absolutely had to be, steamrolling Bill Belichick’s Patriots — which led 13-7 at halftime — over the final 30 minutes. Belichick had been 72-1 when leading at halftime at Gillette Stadium and the Patriots had been undefeated in four previous conference championship games on their home field. But they had no answers for quarterback Joe Flacco, or for a Ravens defense that not only forced three turnovers in the second half, but forced several Patriots to the sidelines.

A week after outshining the Broncos’ Peyton Manning and two weeks after getting the better of Indianapolis Colts phenom Andrew Luck, Flacco outplayed Brady, completing 15 of 24 passes in the second half for 159 yards and three touchdowns after the coaching staff made the decision in the second half to put the game on the fifth-year quarterback’s shoulders.

“We realized we needed to put some pressure on them,” Flacco said. “We didn’t come all the way here to play it safe.”

Still trailing by six points about midway through the third quarter, Flacco hit tight end Dennis Pitta for a five-yard touchdown that gave the Ravens a 14-13 lead that they never relinquished. On the first play of the fourth quarter, he found Anquan Boldin for a three-yard score and then a little more than three minutes later, the pair connected for an 11-yard touchdown. Boldin said during the week the Ravens would win, and those two touchdowns made sure of that.

January 21st, 2013

After last January’s heart-wrenching defeat in the AFC Championship game at Gillette Stadium to the New England Patriots, Ray Lewis stood in front of his teammates in the Ravens’ locker room and vowed to them that they would be back in this exact same spot again.

Nearly one year later, they stood together in celebration, in that same locker room as a team with one mission. One by one clutching the Lamar Hunt trophy, presented to the winner of the AFC Championship Game, they could say that they were, on this January night the best in the AFC.

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the New England Patriots, 28-13 to win the AFC Championship and advance to their second Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. Just as they were in their 2000 season run, the Ravens were a #4 seed, hungry for the opportunity and determined to prove all detractors wrong.

For the third time since last January’s defeat, Joe Flacco outplayed future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady as the Ravens took advantage of three New England turnovers, paving the way to victory. The Ravens (13-6) gained only 130 yards total in the first half, but quickly got things going in the 2nd half as Flacco led the offense to scoring drives of 72 and 63 yards respectively.

The hot teams going into the playoffs usually make the most noise and this year is no different. The Ravens were hot at the right time and will now face Jim Harbaugh’s San Francisco 49ers in the Big Easy, February 3rd.

Quarterback: A

This was Joe Flacco’s game to make big plays and win and he silenced a lot of his critics. Flacco survived dropped passes by Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta early, then bounced back from some missed opportunities down field to have an outstanding performance when it mattered most.

He has truly stepped into his own and it showed in the 2nd half of the game. After throwing for just 81 yards in the first half, Flacco went 15-for-24 for 159 yards and three touchdowns in the 2nd half.

Perhaps the Ravens best drive of the game was the one they needed the most. Flacco led them on a 10 play, 87 yard scoring drive midway through the 3rd quarter where he completed six of nine passes and three of those going for first downs, eventually leading to a Dennis Pitta 5-yard score. Jim Caldwell started to mix things up, calling for throws on first down which gave the offense some life that they didn’t have in the 1st half.

Flacco’s other two touchdowns went to Anquan Boldin in the 4th quarter to seal the victory. It didn’t matter that wind was a factor, Flacco has a strong enough arm to cut through it and that showed delivering crisp throws to his targets. The Patriots tried to take away his ability to throw to the outside but he overcame that. He was excellent over the middle where he threw some of his best passes of the game. He tossed the ball perfectly to Boldin for the first touchdown these two hooked up on, allowing Boldin to use his strength to muscle the ball away from two defenders.

The 2nd touchdown to Boldin was beautiful. Flacco saw the mismatch with Patriots corner back Marquice Cole giving chase and tossed a back shoulder throw into the endzone where only Boldin could go and get it.

Flacco has now thrown eight touchdowns to zero interceptions in the playoffs. He’s been that good. The Ravens have a Super Bowl quarterback in Joe Flacco.

Running Backs: B

The running game was slowed by the Patriots defense, but was still effective enough within the game plan to help the offense out. Ray Rice got involved in the passing game to help the cause, catching a screen pass on 2nd-and-10 at midfield, cutting back across the field and getting 15 yards to keep the driving going midway through the 3rd quarter. Rice finished with 48 yards rushing and a two-yard touchdown where Rice bounced the run out to the left with an amazing cut and evaded two tacklers on his way to the end zone.

Bernard Pierce is the great change-of-pace back we’ve seen for weeks now, finishing with 52 yards rushing on nine carries but he made the most of the carries he received. Pierce did a nice job catching the football too when the Ravens needed it. Flacco found him in the flat as Pierce shook Kyle Arrington’s tackle to pick up a first down with about 12 minutes to play in the 2nd quarter.

Pierce had two nice runs late in the 3rd quarter that showcased his downhill running style and the dynamic he brings to the table when on the field. On a 3rd-and-2 from the Patriots 36, Pierce ran a draw that he bounced outside to the right, breaking an arm tackle two yards behind the line of scrimmage by Rob Ninkovich, then powered through another tackle using his acceleration to gain 11 yards on the play.

The next carry was another draw, but on this run carried two Patriot defenders with him, picking up a healthy six yards on 1st down.

The unit didn’t put up big numbers, but solid enough because it was the Joe Flacco show.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: B+

In the 1st half, Ravens receivers were not getting much separation from the defenders. Patriots corner Aqib Talib was effective early keeping Torrey Smith in check but once he left the game with a thigh injury, Jim Caldwell and Joe Flacco took advantage of the opportunity.

Anquan Boldin was a man among boys in this game. He out-muscled two defenders for his first touchdown and then beat a safety in the slot for his 2nd touchdown. Boldin added 60 yards on five catches.

Torrey Smith really got going in the 2nd half with some great catches, but his longest went for 25 yards in the 2nd quarter as Flacco threw to him on a play-action pass. Smith went high into the air to get it at its highest point where no defender could get to. He ran some really solid routes in this game. The in-cuts were ran to perfection.

Both Smith and Dennis Pitta worked the middle of the field extremely well for Flacco. Flacco did a nice job of scanning the field and knowing Pitta was the safety valve in the middle as the Patriots tried to close off the Ravens to the outside. Pitta had five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown came one play after Pitta was leveled by Jerod Mayo but somehow hung onto the football.

Offensive Line: A

The line was outstanding blocking Joe Flacco in the game. The line change has really catapulted this team to where they currently are. Flacco was sacked twice but both of those sacks were coverage sacks.

Neutralizing Vince Wilfork was important and the Ravens used tandems to keep him at bay. Bryant McKinnie and Kelechi Osemele worked well together as did Marshal Yanda and Michael Oher. Matt Birk played well when the Patriots went to four-down lineman looks because he could help to bunch to either guard’s side.

Marshal Yanda pulls to his left a lot because he’s an extremely athletic and hard-nosed lineman. He did that quite often on runs to the left and middle. They did a nice job of putting the Patriots lineman on their heels.

Defensive Line: B-

The Ravens combated the Patriots no-huddle offense with a steady rotation of players and they matched the tempo well. Ma’ake Kemoeatu recorded five tackles and Haloti Ngata had four. One of Ngata’s tackles was helping to chase Wes Welker down on a short pass in the 4th quarter with Cary Williams.

The line prevented Tom Brady from putting up the big plays with their ability to get pressure near him. They didn’t record a sack on Brady but they made him move around in the pocket not allowing to get his feet set and throw the football in his specific timing routes.

Art Jones won’t have many numbers show up in the stat book, but he may have played the best out of all the defensive lineman. He was a constant near Tom Brady and recovered a fumble on the huge hit from Bernard Pollard to Stevan Ridley in the 4th quarter. Pernell McPhee had two passes defended, one that was batted into the air and picked off by Dannell Ellerbe. McPhee did a nice job of timing Brady’s throws to get his hands up to bat away the football.

The defensive line completely wore down the Patriots offensive line and it showed late in the 4th quarter.

Linebackers: B-

Ray Lewis finished the game with 14 tackles but the Patriots used right guard Dan Connolly and at times center Ryan Wendell as spies to locate and block him one on one. Ray played a lot of coverage down field where most of his tackles came from. Regardless, Ray’s play since his return from injury has been astounding.

His fresh legs have helped alongside Dannell Ellerbe who had a real solid game. Ellerbe played well and showed good closing speed as he patrolled the middle of the field, something the Patriots tried to take advantage of. Ellerbe finished with five tackles and a pass defended.

Terrell Suggs played a total game in this one, but got stronger in the 2nd half. He finished with seven total tackles and gave Patriots left tackle Nate Solder problems all afternoon long. Paul Kruger had trouble with right tackle Sebastian Vollmer most of the day, he couldn’t really get around him and got pushed back.

Secondary: B-

The Patriots used a lot of short screens and quick slants to try and beat the Ravens but didn’t allow anything over the top. The secondary played solid overall against Tom Brady.

Corey Graham finished with 11 total tackles and Cary Williams had six tackles in addition to the final interception of the game with 1:06 left in the 4th quarter. Graham and Chykie Brown had a mix up in communication that allowed Wes Welker to score a touchdown that gave the Patriots a 10-7 lead in the 2nd quarter. Graham signaled to Brown to watch for the crossing route and to stay home, instead, he went with his man leaving Welker open for the score.

Brown had a bit of a tough game, missing at least two tackles that I could count and only recorded one tackle in the game.

Bernard Pollard made his presence felt in this one, walloping running back Stevan Ridley and causing him to fumble early in the 4th quarter as he finished with nine tackles and a pass defended.

Special Teams: B+

Special teams played much better than last week but still gave up a little too much to Wes Welker on punt returns than they would have liked. It ultimately didn’t hurt the Ravens even with the Patriots having good field position. The Ravens played to their assignments in the kick return game and the Patriots never got that going.

On the opposite side, the Patriots kept Jacoby Jones relatively quiet in this game as they bottled his running lane quickly. He also didn’t look extremely decisive at times with where he wanted to run with the football.

Sam Koch had seven punts, averaging 44.7 yards per punt with just one landing inside the 20 but that was because the Ravens were backed up near their own end zone for most of the first half.

Coaching: A

Outstanding job by Jim Caldwell to make some small changes that had a big impact on the play in the 2nd half. The Ravens weren’t throwing the ball on 1st down much in the 1st half of play, and they were conservative, but they mixed up the play calling starting in the 3rd quarter to get the Pats defense off-balance. They used some more shotgun formations to take advantage of Flacco’s strong arm. In the redzone, the Ravens were outstanding. Four possessions, four touchdowns.

Dean Pees drew up a solid game plan. The defense didn’t record a sack on Brady, but they were able to move the pocket and get Brady out of his comfort zone. Defensively, the Ravens weren’t phased by the gimmick-type things the Patriots did on offense. They gave up a lot of yards, but did not allow the Patriots to beat them with the big play. They stayed with their assignments and were focused. An outstanding job of being coached up on all sides.

Final Take

The Baltimore Ravens will travel to New Orleans to play the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII. Let that sink in for just a moment. The Ravens are amazing in their playoff history. According to our good friends at Russell Street Report, the Ravens are now (13-7) all-time in playoff games and their .650 winning percentage is now the highest among any NFL team, edging out the New York Giants (.645).

This team looked to be in a dire situation in mid-December. They had just lost badly at home to Denver, fired offensive coordinator Cam Cameron days before that game and were transitioning in a new offensive line. It would have been easy for this team to pack it up and just quit but they never did and that’s what has them 60 minutes away from winning their 2nd Super Bowl title. They dominated the Patriots in the 2nd half and deserve to be playing for the Super Bowl.

Hard to find someone now with anything bad to say about Joe Flacco. The guy went out and beat Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning and then Tom Brady in the playoffs and is the signal caller in the Ravens second appearance in the Super Bowl on February 3rd.

Anquan Boldin may have said it best as he told CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz, “Its not often you get this opportunity twice. We left this stadium last year with a bad taste in our mouths. We relish this chance.”

They relished the opportunity and now the Harbaugh brothers take their respective teams to Super Bowl XLVII. What a game it will be.

One of the most enticing and intriguing storylines in the long and colorful history of the Super Bowl now is upon us:

Welcome to the HarBowl.

It’ll be Jim Harbaugh of the 49ers versus big brother John Harbaugh of the Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans. They became the first set of brothers to coach against one another in a Thanksgiving game in 2011, and now they’ll renew a sibling rivalry that dates to their days growing up in the household where another coach — father Jack Harbaugh — taught his boys the lessons of football.

This time it will be on the NFL‘s biggest stage as the brothers fight for the right to hold the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Just an astonishing turn of events for a family whose life has always revolved around their beloved sport. Jim Harbaugh, a former NFL quarterback who coached in college and then the pros, against John Harbaugh, a former Eagles special-teams coach who took over the Ravens in 2008 and now is one step away from delivering the second Super Bowl title in franchise history.

Jim earned his ticket to New Orleans first with a 28-24 win over the Falcons in Atlanta in the NFC Championship Game. John followed suit later in the evening by beating the defending AFC champion Patriots, 28-13, at Gillette Stadium. “I don’t know if we had a dream this big,” John Harbaugh said. “We had a few dreams. We had a few fights. We had a few arguments. We will try to stay out of that business and let the two teams duke it out as much as possible.”

Fat chance of that happening. Harbaugh vs. Harbaugh will be the central theme for the next two weeks, even if the two attempt to deflect the attention away from themselves. “Let’s just all agree to forget about that,” John said. “We did that last year. It got old last year.” And it’s about to get really old this year.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Jim,” John said. “Watching that [49ers] team play, they do reflect his personality. They have physical players. They run the ball, they throw the football. They have a quarterback making plays all over the place. They have a roughhouse defense. There’s a reason they’re in the Super Bowl. I’d like to think our two teams are very similar. It’s going to be a great football game.”

Sure looks that way — even if it might be tough for Jack and his wife, Jackie, to deal with the mixed emotions of watching their two sons battle for the title.

When I asked John after the game what he thought his parents must be feeling, he replied: “I hope [Jack] is on his fourth or fifth beer right now. I hope he and Mom have a big hug going.”

The Ravens will go to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2000 season, and Ray Lewis now has a chance to close out his Hall of Fame career with a second Super Bowl title. What a way to end a 17-year career.

Baltimore held Tom Brady & Co. to one touchdown pass and two field goals. Brady was intercepted twice and the Ravens’ Joe Flacco had three TD passes and no interceptions. In this postseason, he has eight touchdown passes and no interceptions.

Flacco has beaten Peyton Manning and Brady in consecutive weeks, avenging last year’s loss to the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. “We keep putting ourselves in position a lot to win these games, and eventually, you’re going to push through,” Flacco said. “This is my fifth year here and this is the third time we’ve played in and the first time we’ve won.”

Flacco rallied the Ravens beautifully after the Patriots took a 13-7 lead into the second half. He took the Ravens on two long scoring drives to give Baltimore a 21-13 lead.

Flacco was 6-for-9 for 64 yards on the drive that put the Ravens ahead 14-13 with 6:14 left in the third quarter. His 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dennis Pitta finished off the drive. He then led a 10-play, 63-yard drive capped by his 3-yard touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin, who outleaped safety Devin McCourty to give Baltimore a 21-13 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter.

The Patriots still had plenty of time to answer, but running back Stevan Ridley fumbled on the next possession and the Ravens recovered at the Patriots’ 47. It took Flacco only four plays to get the Ravens into the end zone for a third straight possession, putting the Ravens up 28-13 with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Boldin over cornerback Marquice Cole.

Enough time for another vintage Brady moment?

Yes, there was, but the future Hall of Fame quarterback couldn’t get it done. He put the Patriots in scoring position but wound up misfiring on third- and fourth-down passes, failing to make up the two-score deficit.

Even then, there still was a chance. The Patriots forced a three-and-out on Baltimore’s next possession, and Brady hit Wes Welker on a 36-yard pass to the Ravens’ 24. But his next pass attempt was tipped by defensive end Pernell McPhee and intercepted by linebacker Dannell Ellerbe.

Game over.

So now it’s time for the HarBowl. Oh, and sorry, Jim and John. We’ll be talking about it plenty in the next two weeks. It’s history, fellas. Enjoy the ride.

Ray Lewis, Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens lived up to their team of destiny image on a field where their 2011 season ended painfully. Baltimore coach John Harbaugh is headed to a Super Bowl matchup with his brother. And Lewis can hold his retirement party in New Orleans.

Flacco threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns Sunday as the Ravens, who struggled mightily at the end of the season, beat the New England Patriots 28-13 Sunday in the AFC Championship Game.

The Ravens, Super Bowl champs in their first and only previous trip to the championship in the 2000 season, will play for NFC champion San Francisco 49ers, coached by John Harbaugh’s brother, Jim.

Lewis, who has announced he will retire after 17 NFL seasons at age 37, missed the last 10 games of the regular season with a torn triceps in his right arm. But he’s returned to the playoffs to inspire a Baltimore defense that held Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady to one touchdown pass with two interceptions. New England had never lost an AFC title game at home.

Last season, the Patriots edged the Ravens 23-20 here in the AFC Championship Game. In the final seconds, a potential winning touchdown pass to Lee Evans was stripped away in the end zone and Billy Cundiff missed a potential game-tying 32-yard field goal for Baltimore.

Maybe it’s going to take a trip to the Super Bowl to convince those outside the Baltimore Ravens’ locker room that Joe Flacco is an elite NFL quarterback.

Flacco is the only starting quarterback in NFL history to reach the postseason in each of his first five seasons. His 61 victories (including the postseason) are more than any NFL quarterback since the start of the 2008 season.

Flacco has won five road playoff games in his career, tied with Eli Manning for the most in NFL history. Joe Montana didn’t do it. Neither did Brett Favre, Steve Young, Troy Aikman or Peyton Manning.

Each of those greats, however, owns a Super Bowl ring. So does Tom Brady, who will lead the New England Patriots (13-4) in Sunday’s AFC championship rematch against the Ravens (12-6).

Flacco’s teammates don’t care about how his resume stacks up against the other greats in the game.

“That’s a question you guys have got to answer,” wide receiver Anquan Boldin told reporters this week. “He already has our respect.”

Flacco’s 7-4 record in the postseason speaks loudly about his ability to excel in big games. The former first-round draft pick out of Delaware outplayed Peyton Manning last weekend, throwing for 331 yards — including a 70-yard strike to Jacoby Jones in the closing seconds of regulation to force overtime in a game the Ravens ultimately won 38-35.

The touchdown pass to Jones might have thrust Flacco into the discussion about whether he can stand among the elite.

“You go out there and you play to win the football game and some of the things that have been required to win these football games have maybe been a little bit over the top and a little abnormal,” Flacco said. “I would like to think that I go out there and play consistently and approach everything the same way. I think that’s been proved out. We win a lot of football games around here, and this is actually the third time I’m standing up here getting ready to play in an AFC championship game.

“It’s pretty crazy when you think about it.”

The guy is good. So far, not quite good enough to take his team to the Super Bowl. But he’s taken the Ravens to the brink, and hasn’t missed a start since earning the job as a rookie in training camp.

“We love Joe, have for a long time,” center Matt Birk said. “You’re always going to have naysayers out there, but we’re not concerned about that. The great thing about Joe is, neither is he. Joe is very comfortable with who he is and the type of player he is. That’s a great trait for a leader to have, especially a quarterback in the NFL.”

He’s got another great trait for a quarterback: The ability to throw the deep ball. Few have done it as well this season as Flacco, who has completed 46 passes of 25 yards or longer, including TD throws of 70, 59 and 32 yards last week in Denver.

Asked to describe Flacco’s deep ball, Jones replied, “It’s like a Starburst. It’s just juicy, man. It’s good. It’s like candy. Everybody likes candy.”

On the Ravens, it seems like everyone likes Joe.

“I’ve never played with a guy with that much talent; I’m talking about physically,” Boldin said. “I think Joe is able to make any throw on the field. Big-time throws, the deep ball, he does it all.”

Flacco is known among his teammates as Joe Cool because of his calm demeanor in the huddle and the pocket.

“He doesn’t flinch in any situation,” wide receiver Torrey Smith said. “That’s what we like about him. He’s the same, whether we’re doing well or bad, and you can trust a guy like that.”

When it’s time for business, Flacco doesn’t panic. Against Denver, he moved the Ravens 77 yards in 38 seconds with the game on the line.

“You all might think we’re lying about it, but I’m being so serious when I say that when we went to the huddle, no one doubted for a second that we (were) going to score,” Smith said. “Did we think it was going to be a 70-yard bomb? No. But no one panicked. It was just so calm in the huddle. It was like, ‘All right. Let’s go do it.’ And we got it done.”

Recalling the drive, Flacco said, “There’s no need to get all worked up over stuff like that when you know you have put all of your time, all of your effort into going out there and having fun and winning the football game. There’s no need to blow it out of proportion and get overwhelmed by that kind of thing. I think when you have that mindset, it is easy to go out there and stay calm and play in that moment.”

Flacco earned the Patriots’ respect in last year’s title game when he outplayed Brady and nearly pulled off an upset. Earlier this season, Flacco threw for 382 yards and three scores in Baltimore’s 31-30 win over New England.

“He’s tough to bring down, he stands in the pocket, he takes a hit, he gets up. That’s a tough football player,” Patriots tackle Vince Wilfork said. “When you have a quarterback like that, that’s special.”

Flacco’s rookie contract expires after this season. Regardless of what happens Sunday — and whether he gets a long-term deal or receives Baltimore’s franchise tag — he is due for a big payday in the months ahead. But Flacco has more pressing issues in mind this week.

“I’m sure it’s back there somewhere, but it’s not something I’ve really thought about or really considered,” he said.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh has made his position clear: Pay the man.

“He is one of the toughest quarterbacks I have ever been around,” Harbaugh said. “He’s the best quarterback I’ve ever been around.”

An unlikely player gave the Broncos the lead early in the third quarter of Saturday’s AFC Divisional game against Baltimore: Return specialist Trindon Holliday, who was released earlier this season by the Texans because he struggled with turnovers, has two touchdowns — a 90-yard punt return and a 104-yard kick return.

But it’s even more impressive than that:

FROM ELIAS: Trindon Holliday is the 1st player in NFL history with TWO TDs of any kind to go 90+ Yds in the same playoff game #DENvsBAL

— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) January 12, 2013

Baltimore was one of only 7 NFL teams that did not allow a special teams TD this season. Bad time to allow KR & PR for TD in same game…

Today is Special Teams Coordinator Jeff Rodgers’ birthday. #Broncos

Interestingly, Ravens kick returner Jacoby Jones, who hasn’t been heard from Saturday, was named to the 2012 All-Pro Team earlier in the day.

Tight end Jason Witten had a wonderful day. He finished with a career-high 18 catches for 167 yards and no touchdowns. Romo targeted Witten 21 times. It was a sharp contract to the season opener for Witten, who was playing after being cleared from a lacerated spleen to participate in the Week 1 victory. That night, Witten had two catches for 10 yards and numerous drops.

What’s next? The Cowboys visit the Atlanta Falcons, who are coming off a 30-17 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Falcons (7-0) are 29-6 at the Georgia Dome, the third most home victories in the NFL since 2008. Only the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots have more.

Replacement officials

September 25, 2012

The fans have spoken. Did you hear the cursing chant from Baltimore? When the Ravens faithful had finally endured enough of the NFL‘s arrogance Sunday, they rained a unified two-syllable expletive down upon the fake officials that walloped millions of television viewers like a Ray Lewis forearm. I’ve heard that curse chanted before, but it’s never been so consistently loud, and never so amazingly long.

The players have spoken. Less than a week after the NFL ordered its personnel to stop harassing the paper zebras because “everybody has a responsibility to respect the game,” one guy was still so angry he put it in writing. Brandon Spikes, linebacker for the New England Patriots, tweeted, “Can some 1 please tell these [expletive] zebras foot locker called and they’re needed Back at work!!!!” His hashtag was a perfect description of the situation. It read, #BreakingPoint

Finally, at the lowest moment of what may have been the most shameful Sunday in the history of the NFL, the game’s finest coach also spoke. Bill Belichick was so upset after his Patriots lost to the Ravens in the day’s final debacle, he grabbed at one of the replacement officials in an act of rage rarely seen in a league where a head coach has never been ejected from a game.

To all these words, there is only one thing to add, a suggestion to Commissioner Roger Goodell regarding a referee lockout that is now threatening the league’s integrity while indelibly staining his legacy.

Give it up. It’s over. Your power play didn’t work. Officials are not cardboard cutouts who can be replaced with cheap facsimiles. The decorum of your sport cannot be enforced by substitute teachers. The safety of your players cannot be monitored by crossing guards. The administration of your game cannot be handled by temps.

Cut your losses. End this lockout now. Show who you are. Show what your game means. Prove that the new national pastime is not just another corrupt old business. Prove that you really respect the game more than your need to win this labor fight. Do you really care about the health of your players as much as the health of your league’s bank account? Has all this recent cracking down on cracking heads been sincere or just spin?

End this lockout before it irreparably damages the season while indelibly staining your legacy. End it before Thursday begins a fourth weekend of controlled chaos.

Want to know my favorite statistic of Week 3? Sixteen of 20 coach’s challenges resulted in overturned calls, meaning officials made the wrong decision on 80% of some of the biggest plays. Think about that.

Want to know my second-favorite statistic? When you crunch the numbers, if the NFL gave the locked-out referees everything they wanted, it would cost about $100,000 extra per team per season. That equals about four games’ pay for one of the team’s lowest-paid players. The owners are watching their sport burn because they won’t improve the officials’ compensation by about one-fourth the amount they would pay a backup guard? Think about that.

OK, real quick, I’ve got a third-favorite statistic from last weekend. There were 13 penalty first downs in the game between the Patriots and the Ravens, which is only the most in the history of the NFL.

The only numbers that seem to concern Goodell, of course, are the television ratings, which are as booming as ever. As long as the players and fans won’t walk over this — and neither group is budging — then Goodell apparently feels that the officiating problems are irrelevant. Heck, he probably thinks the poor officiating is good for league buzz.

But I’ve got some Internet photos in front of me that should remind him of a different, much more frightening possibility.

In one of the photos, Shannon Eastin, a replacement who is the league’s first female official, is sitting behind a pile of chips while competing in the 2007 World Series of Poker. Lovely. Somebody making decisions that affect the outcome of NFL games is a gambler.

In another photo, replacement Brian Stroplo is wearing New Orleans Saints gear. The NFL pulled him from the rotation after seeing these photos, but the guy had already officiated one game, and how would you like to be a Saints opponent penalized by a guy shouting, “Who Dat?”

These photos meant the league didn’t closely check the replacements, who come from the likes of middle schools, eight-man high school ball and small colleges, because the best refs won’t cross the line. This means there could be other officials susceptible to outside sources, and you know where I’m going here. If replacement officials remain, how long before a coach seriously charges that a game has been fixed? Already, betting lines in Las Vegas have changed to reflect a belief that replacements are being swayed by home crowds. When has an NFL point spread been altered because of concerns about potentially tainted officials? Answer: Never.

There is some thought that because Belichick works for one of the league’s most powerful owners, Robert Kraft, maybe Goodell will listen now. There is some hope that the league’s powerful sponsors and even television partners — did you hear Al Michaels and Chris Collinsworth just obliterating the officials on NBC on Sunday night? — will finally get Goodell’s ear about the danger in producing a dishonorable product.

If none of that works, then Roger Goodell just needs to listen to his own office, in that scolding memo it sent to the league.

“Everybody has a responsibility to respect the game.”

This includes the guy running it.
