Former Utes Paul Kruger and Ma’ake Kemoeatu have played major roles this season while keying Baltimore’s Super Bowl run. Both are expected to start this Sunday against San Francisco.

Although Kruger was a standout at defensive end for the Utes, he’s made his mark playing outside linebacker in Baltimore’s 3-4 defense. Now in his fourth season Kruger is one of the Raven’s impact players along with Corey Graham, according Clifton Brown of the Sporting News.

“(Terrell) Suggs, Ray LewisEd Reed and Haloti Ngata get most of the headlines for the Ravens’ defense. But without Kruger and Graham, the Ravens don’t make it to Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots,” wrote Brown prior to Baltimore’s AFC championship win over New England.

Kruger contributed four tackles in that game, but it was against the Indianapolis Colts in the first round where he made perhaps his biggest impact. In that game he wreaked all sorts of havoc with four tackles, 2.5 sacks and one key forced fumble.

In Baltimore’s improbable 38-35 double overtime win over Denver he made a play that effectively ended the game.

“Perhaps his most vital play, however, came when he chased Peyton Manning out of the pocket in the closing stages of the Ravens’ AFC divisional round nail-biter against the Denver Broncos, forcing Manning to throw the interception that effectively ended the game,” wrote Martin Rogers of Yahoo Sports.

Kruger had 46 tackles in the regular season and led the Ravens with nine sacks.

Kemoeatu has been a mainstay on the interior of Baltimore’s defensive line after sitting out last season with injury and weight issues. Now in his tenth year the former Ute is playing his best football when it matters most.

The mammoth 6-foot-5, 345 lineman recorded his first sack of the year in Baltimore’s final regular season game against Cincinnati.

“Everything is tweaked up just right, everybody knows where they need to be and what they’re supposed to be doing,” Kemoeatu told Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun following the game. “Of course, it took the whole season, but I feel like the defense has got everything down at the right time to make a run.”

Kemoeatu started 13 games for the Ravens in the regular season and all three postseason games. His best effort of the year may have come in the AFC Championship game win over New England where he had a season-high five tackles.

Rah deal?

A Baltimore Ravens cheerleader who told the team she was quitting after the season says she has been unfairly left off the squad for the Super Bowl, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The alleged snub of Courtney Lenz sparked an online petition and Facebook drive to reinstate her. Thousands had posted their support as of Wednesday afternoon after Lenz reached out for help.

The team had promised that all cheerleaders with at least three years’ experience would qualify for the Super Bowl, the petition said. Lenz, 23, of Baltimore, had been with the team for five years. The petition noted that Lenz was the only veteran barred from performing.

The Ravens defended Lenz’s omission, telling ABC they trimmed the 60-member squad to the NFL-allowed 32 for the big game based on seniority, performance and personal conduct. Lenz said she believed the team was retaliating for her leaving the squad.

On the Facebook page titled “Help Us Get Courtney To Superbowl,” Lenz wrote she was told by the team that she had a “rough year.” She also said she had been benched for a few games because she had gained weight — “no more than two pounds” she added.

The Baltimore Ravens will face off against the San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans on Sunday, Feb. 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 EST. About 150,000 Super Bowl fans are expected in the city, according to the Associated Press.

For the next two weeks, this is Ray Lewis‘ world. We’re just covering it.

You have to hand it to the old linebacker. What he now lacks in physical talent, he makes up with miles of charisma. Actually, charisma isn’t the right word. Ray Lewis transcends charisma. His personality traits no longer are contained by the English language.

Who else tearfully emotes to the heavens with a wild glint in his eye … during “The Star-Spangled Banner”? Who can turn even the most mundane question from a media member into a rambling, emotional monologue about faith, trust and perseverance?

Call it the passion of the Ray.

“For me to come out and say that this is my last ride and for me now to be headed back to the Super Bowl for me possibly winning a second ring, how else do you cap off a career?” Lewis said following the Baltimore Ravens‘ 28-13 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday night. “How else do you honor your fans and give them everything they cheer for?

“Baltimore is one of the most loyal places since 1996 that I’ve ever been around. And the greatest reward you could ever give them is another chance at a Super Bowl. So man, the last ride? I can only tell you I’m along for the ride.”

It’s classic Ray Lewis. It’s hard to tell exactly what he’s talking about, but you can feel it. Maybe.

For the other Ravens, these playoffs are about giving Lewis a storybook ending to his career. He said Sunday it can be difficult walking into a locker room sometimes, knowing so many players want a moment of his time. That’s kind of an odd thing to say, but then again, few players have ever commanded more respect in a locker room than No. 52.

“I’ve always said, ‘When you leave your legacy, what will your legacy be?’ ” Lewis said. “And to hear men tell you they love you. And to hear men tell you they respect the life that you live. It’s the ultimate.”

Everything Ray Lewis says sounds like the final speech from your favorite sports movie. Now we get to sit back and see how it all ends.

The 98.5 The Sports Hub, WBZ-TV and WBZ NewsRadio 1030 sports teams make their predictions for the Patriots-Ravens AFC Championship showdown on Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

Scott Zolak, 98.5 The Sports Hub

I have a lot of respect for this team coming in here this week. These are men, unlike the team that came in last week with that team of frauds.

This is going to be a good one, it really is. Baltimore is probably the most mentally tough team other than New England. These two teams set the standard in the NFL of how you want to be ready and extend that into the season.

You wonder if the Ravens can come in here and duplicate last year when they really gave themselves a chance to win that ballgame.

I just go down to the simple thing and this one simple factor. I think the Patriots are deep, and a better team than last year. I can’t see any reason why Tom Brady will play the way he did last year. He has to play better, and that’s what drives him. That’s why I’m picking the Patriots in this one.

Patriots 26, Ravens 20

Andy Gresh, 98.5 The Sports Hub

The biggest question for me in this one is going to be if the Patriots can deal with the physicality of the Ravens on the perimeter.

I think Baltimore is going to try to be physical against the wide receivers, but as usual, we’ll see the Patriots try to find a way to incorporate the running backs and tight ends into the passing game.

The other question is if the Patriots can run the ball inside the 10-yard line, which I think they can. This is a tough one, and they better button it up on special teams, which I think they will do.

Patriots 28, Ravens 24

Walt Perkins, WBZ NewsRadio 1030

What to do, what to do.

Do I go with my head or my heart?

My head tells me this will be a close game, perhaps 3-points or less, because these two teams always seem to go down to the wire. What’s more nerve-wracking than “he who scores last wins”? To quote Moe Howard, “Oh my nerves, my nerves.”

My heart tells me the Patriots win by big. Forget the week 3 loss. The NFL was still using replacement refs and there were some bizarre calls in that game. You may remember on the Ravens winning field goal, Bill Belichick ran onto the field and grabbed one of the fake zebras by the arm in an attempt for a video review of that kick which never came.

I think the Patriots today are far superior to the Patriots of week 3. I don’t think the Ravens have improved as much over the same time period. I also think that no matter what the Patriots say publicly about the Ravens’ trash talking (“We don’t pay any attention to that”), it did not go in one ear and out the other. They want to crush this team. And they will.

Patriots 37, Ravens 13

Dan Roche, WBZ-TV

This has the makings of an epic game, but there are questions that cast doubts on how things may unfold.

The Ravens are the team with the “mojo” right now. They remind me of the Steelers team that got rolling a few years ago and never stopped en route to the Super Bowl. Ravens Quarterback Joe Flacco has been outstanding as he just doesn’t make any mistakes. The receiving corps has been great from Torrey Smith to Anquan Boldin to Dennis Pitta to Ray Rice — with Rice and Bernard Pierce running well too. Simply put, the Ravens are dangerous.

On defense, Paul Kruger has been tremendous on the line getting to the quarterback. He did it against the Pats in Baltimore’s 31-30 Week 3 win. The return of Ray Lewis has brought an emotional boost as well.

The Patriots have plenty of firepower right now on both sides of the ball. Tom Brady just finds a way to put up points, Gronk or no Gronk.

I like the Pats defense and the way they played last weekend against Houston. Aqib Talib and Devin McCourty are playing well at corner and safety. The only problem for the Pats may be Rice out of the backfield with such a big — and somewhat slow — linebacking corps. But as a whole, they are better than Baltimore’s defense.

I will take Brady and the Pats in this one. I’m not sure if by one, three, seven, etc, but I like the Pats to move on to the Super Bowl again.

Levan Reid, WBZ-TV

I guess I should feel that this game is going to be close.  The Pats and the Ravens have only played close games in the past but this one I feel will be different.  The Pats have to slow down the Baltimore long ball.  They may get some help from the weather with that and then it’s just containing Ray Rice.  I get the feeling, from the players this week, that this is something they feel extremely confident with.

They have played the Ravens enough to understand what’s at hand.  So now it just comes down to who is playing better.  Right now, the Pats are playing close to their best football of the season  The offense, with or without Rob Gronkowski is clicking and after the gimmick comment from Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, I expect that offense to percolate at an even faster pace.

Ray Lewis will play his heart out and the Ravens will give it all for their emotional leader but it will not be enough.  Tom Brady and Belichick are 5 and 1 in championship games and this will be a 6th victory.  Brady had a bad outing in last year’s AFC Championship game.  On Sunday, I think he’s poised to play his best game of the year.  The defense will get the turnovers when needed and Aqib Talib will become a household name. Since he’s come to the Pats, he’s answered the call of the other teams top receivers and he will continue to do so against the Ravens and Torrey Smith.

Patriots 30, Ravens 13

Fallen star: Robert F. Chew -- best known for playing Proposition Joe on The Wire -- was found dead from heart failure at age 52

17:51 EST              18 January 2013

Actor Robert F. Chew, best known for his role as the gang leader Proposition Joe on the hit HBO show The Wire, was found dead Thursday in his Baltimore apartment. He was 52

According to the coroner, Chew died of cardiovascular disease, with ‘morbid obesity’ as a contributing factor, TMZ reported.

Chew’s sister, Clarice, told The Baltimore Sun that her brother passed away ‘from apparent heart failure in his sleep.’

Last goodbye: Chew passed away in his sleep from an apparent heart failure in his apartment in north Baltimore Last goodbye: Chew passed away in his sleep from an apparent heart failure in his apartment in north Baltimore

Chew had very little acting experience when he was approached by the creator of The Wire, reporter and writer David Simon, to play the wisecracking drug lord ‘Proposition Joe’ Stewart. He stayed on for the entire five-season run of the popular series.

Since news of Chew’s sudden passing first broke online, tributes began pouring in from the actor’s friends and colleagues.

On Friday, actor Michael Kenneth Williams, who memorably portrayed charming stickup boy Omar Little on The Wire, posted a photo on Instagram with the caption: ‘R.I.P. to the talented Mr Robert Chew ~prpojoe.’

Other cast members from the series also honored Chew with online tributes, among them actor Wendell Pierce, who wrote: ‘To the beloved Robert Chew, a man who was real Bawlmore, and created the iconic character of “Prop Joe”, may you RIP. A teacher & friend.’

Pierce portrayed police detective Bunk Moreland on The Wire. Most recently, he starred as a New Orleans jazz musician in David Simon’s Treme on HBO.

Jamie Hector, who played a rival gangster, Marlo, in the crime drama, also tweeted about Chew’s passing: ‘I didn’t want to believe this #RIP Robert F Chew, Prop Joe will always be remembered Robert Chew will always be loved and missed!’

On Friday, Mr Simon sent a letter to the Sun praising Chew’s gritty and true-to-life depiction of the Baltimore gangster.

‘The Wire cast was an embarrassment of riches and it was easy, I think, for outsiders to overlook some of those who were so essential as supporting players,’ wrote Simon. ‘ Robert’s depiction of Proposition Joe was so fixed and complete — from the very earliest scenes — that the writers took for granted that anything we sent him would be finely executed.’

Role model: Chew had spent decades coaching and mentoring young actors in Baltimore, many of whom ended up landing parts on The Wire Role model: Chew had spent decades coaching and mentoring young actors in Baltimore, many of whom ended up landing parts on The Wire

Mr Chew’s unforgettable drug kingpin character was partially based on a local crime boss, Joe Stewart, who was gunned down in 1984.

Unlike his supremely confident, larger-than-life alter-ego always at the ready with a sharp retort or a witty quip, Mr Chew was a quiet and low-key man, according to those who knew him.

A born-and-bred Baltimore resident, Chew began his acting career in 1997 with a bit part on another David Simon project, NBC’s Homicide.

He also appeared in another HBO mini-series created by Simon called The Corner, which aired in 2000.

Chew graduated from Patterson High School and attended Morgan State University where he sang in the school’s renowned choir.

He was working full time in Baltimore area theater since the early 1980s and had spent the past three decades coaching and mentoring young actors in Baltimore. Nearly two dozen of them would eventually land small parts on The Wire.

After the series wrapped up production in 2007, Chew continued to teach acting in the Arena Players Youth Theatre.

‘Robert was not only an exceptional actor, he was an essential part of the film and theater community in Baltimore,’ Simon wrote Friday. ‘He could have gone to New York or Los Angeles and commanded a lot more work, but he loved the city as his home and chose to remain here working.

‘He understood so much about his craft that it was no surprise at all that we would go to him to coach our young actors in season four.  He was the conduit through which they internalized their remarkable performances.’

The funeral for Chew will be held next Thursday at Calvin-Scruggs Funeral Home in Baltimore. He is survived by his mother and three sisters.

An unlikely player gave the Broncos the lead early in the third quarter of Saturday’s AFC Divisional game against Baltimore: Return specialist Trindon Holliday, who was released earlier this season by the Texans because he struggled with turnovers, has two touchdowns — a 90-yard punt return and a 104-yard kick return.

But it’s even more impressive than that:

During talks with the Baltimore police negotiator, Lt. Jason Yerg, MacArthur continued to express concerns about his safety.

He criticized the heavy police presence at his Waverly home, saying of the negotiator, ‘He needs to be battling bad guys, not spending his time talking to The Baltimore Spectator.’

Replacement officials

September 25, 2012

The fans have spoken. Did you hear the cursing chant from Baltimore? When the Ravens faithful had finally endured enough of the NFL‘s arrogance Sunday, they rained a unified two-syllable expletive down upon the fake officials that walloped millions of television viewers like a Ray Lewis forearm. I’ve heard that curse chanted before, but it’s never been so consistently loud, and never so amazingly long.

The players have spoken. Less than a week after the NFL ordered its personnel to stop harassing the paper zebras because “everybody has a responsibility to respect the game,” one guy was still so angry he put it in writing. Brandon Spikes, linebacker for the New England Patriots, tweeted, “Can some 1 please tell these [expletive] zebras foot locker called and they’re needed Back at work!!!!” His hashtag was a perfect description of the situation. It read, #BreakingPoint

Finally, at the lowest moment of what may have been the most shameful Sunday in the history of the NFL, the game’s finest coach also spoke. Bill Belichick was so upset after his Patriots lost to the Ravens in the day’s final debacle, he grabbed at one of the replacement officials in an act of rage rarely seen in a league where a head coach has never been ejected from a game.

To all these words, there is only one thing to add, a suggestion to Commissioner Roger Goodell regarding a referee lockout that is now threatening the league’s integrity while indelibly staining his legacy.

Give it up. It’s over. Your power play didn’t work. Officials are not cardboard cutouts who can be replaced with cheap facsimiles. The decorum of your sport cannot be enforced by substitute teachers. The safety of your players cannot be monitored by crossing guards. The administration of your game cannot be handled by temps.

Cut your losses. End this lockout now. Show who you are. Show what your game means. Prove that the new national pastime is not just another corrupt old business. Prove that you really respect the game more than your need to win this labor fight. Do you really care about the health of your players as much as the health of your league’s bank account? Has all this recent cracking down on cracking heads been sincere or just spin?

End this lockout before it irreparably damages the season while indelibly staining your legacy. End it before Thursday begins a fourth weekend of controlled chaos.

Want to know my favorite statistic of Week 3? Sixteen of 20 coach’s challenges resulted in overturned calls, meaning officials made the wrong decision on 80% of some of the biggest plays. Think about that.

Want to know my second-favorite statistic? When you crunch the numbers, if the NFL gave the locked-out referees everything they wanted, it would cost about $100,000 extra per team per season. That equals about four games’ pay for one of the team’s lowest-paid players. The owners are watching their sport burn because they won’t improve the officials’ compensation by about one-fourth the amount they would pay a backup guard? Think about that.

OK, real quick, I’ve got a third-favorite statistic from last weekend. There were 13 penalty first downs in the game between the Patriots and the Ravens, which is only the most in the history of the NFL.

The only numbers that seem to concern Goodell, of course, are the television ratings, which are as booming as ever. As long as the players and fans won’t walk over this — and neither group is budging — then Goodell apparently feels that the officiating problems are irrelevant. Heck, he probably thinks the poor officiating is good for league buzz.

But I’ve got some Internet photos in front of me that should remind him of a different, much more frightening possibility.

In one of the photos, Shannon Eastin, a replacement who is the league’s first female official, is sitting behind a pile of chips while competing in the 2007 World Series of Poker. Lovely. Somebody making decisions that affect the outcome of NFL games is a gambler.

In another photo, replacement Brian Stroplo is wearing New Orleans Saints gear. The NFL pulled him from the rotation after seeing these photos, but the guy had already officiated one game, and how would you like to be a Saints opponent penalized by a guy shouting, “Who Dat?”

These photos meant the league didn’t closely check the replacements, who come from the likes of middle schools, eight-man high school ball and small colleges, because the best refs won’t cross the line. This means there could be other officials susceptible to outside sources, and you know where I’m going here. If replacement officials remain, how long before a coach seriously charges that a game has been fixed? Already, betting lines in Las Vegas have changed to reflect a belief that replacements are being swayed by home crowds. When has an NFL point spread been altered because of concerns about potentially tainted officials? Answer: Never.

There is some thought that because Belichick works for one of the league’s most powerful owners, Robert Kraft, maybe Goodell will listen now. There is some hope that the league’s powerful sponsors and even television partners — did you hear Al Michaels and Chris Collinsworth just obliterating the officials on NBC on Sunday night? — will finally get Goodell’s ear about the danger in producing a dishonorable product.

If none of that works, then Roger Goodell just needs to listen to his own office, in that scolding memo it sent to the league.

“Everybody has a responsibility to respect the game.”

This includes the guy running it.

What If:  the Patriots go 16-0 again?

Many fans have predicted, myself included, that the Patriots have an easy enough schedule to go undefeated in the regular season for the second time. While this is a real possibility as they really only have two or three games this year they could potentially lose, is it ideal? Think back to the 2007 season. The Patriots steamrolled through opponents scoring 40+ points at ease. Towards the end of the season, though, you could tell the pressure was getting to them. Plays were getting less mechanical and started getting sloppy. They were close to losing a few games, and in fact probably should have lost that game to Baltimore. That pressure carried with them throughout the playoffs and ultimately could be part of the reason they lost the Super Bowl. If the Patriots do have another undefeated season, I see them losing again in the Super Bowl. A third Super Bowl loss would put any Patriots fan in pure agony but look at the NFC. The teams that have Super Bowl potential are simply too good to allow the Patriots to play at any level but their best. They don’t need the added pressure of trying to go 19-0, let’s just focus on getting another ring.

A 15-year-old boy suspected of shooting and critically wounding a fellow student on the first day of classes at a Baltimore high school has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, police said Tuesday.

Robert Wayne Gladden Jr. is being charged as an adult and also faces a first-degree assault charge stemming from Monday’s shooting, according to Baltimore County Police Department spokeswoman Susan Hunt.

Hunt said Gladden, who is being held without bail, is cooperating with authorities. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for September 7.

The 17-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, remains in critical condition at the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma center. The extent of his injuries is not known.

The shooting took place just before 11 a.m. at Perry Hall High School, voted one of America’s Best High Schools by Newsweek magazine in 2010, in suburban northeast Baltimore.

Police believe the attacker chose his victim at random, another police spokeswoman, Julia Hardgrove, said on Monday. She said several other students suffered minor injuries.

The suspect was tackled by faculty members and held until police arrived, officials said.

The shooting is the latest incident of gun violence in a summer plagued by troubling shootings in the United States.

In July, a gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. In August, a suspect described by authorities as a white supremacist killed six people outside a Sikh temple in Wisconsin before committing suicide.

Seven-year-old Dawa Titung grew up in Nepal with a head the size of a basketball, about 10 inches larger than the average head size for children his age. He couldn’t hold his head up, and strangers would often stare at him.

His mother, Phool Titung, said her son’s head was so heavy that she needed help lifting him from his bed or carrying him.

“His head was very big. It was very hard to take care of Dawa,” Titung said, speaking through an interpreter.

Dawa was born with hydrocephalus, a condition in which too much fluid fills the space between the brain and the skull. The still-forming skulls of children with the condition will expand around the fluid, causing the head to grow too large.

About one in 500 children are born with hydrocephalus, according to the National Institutes of Health, and doctors can often treat the condition early in life by shunting the excessive fluid to other parts of the body.

But in Nepal, Dawa and his parents had limited access to medical care. About six months ago, a doctor on a missionary visit to their region told them that help was available from doctors in the U.S.

Dawa’s parents brought him to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore. Dr. Amir Dorafshar, the plastic surgeon who performed Dawa’s operation, said he had never seen a child’s head as large as Dawa’s.

“His mother was unable to do all the things that a mother should be able to do,” Dorafshar said. “Our goal was to help his family care for him more easily.”

Doctors planned an operation to make Dawa’s head smaller. But the surgery to take apart the skull is risky. Beneath the skull are very large blood vessels that feed blood to the brain. Any mistaken slice during surgery can cut those vessels, causing the patient to lose a lot of blood. Dorafshar said he told the Titungs that Dawa had up to a 50 percent chance of dying during the surgery.

To lower that risk, Dorafshar and his colleagues used computer modeling and brain imaging to plan just where the surgeons would cut the bones of Dawa’s skull and design how they could be resized and pieced back together.

“We were able to practice the surgery at our desks before we ever got to the operating room,” Dorafshar said.

On May 9, doctors put their plan into action.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Edward Ahn used Dorafshar’s cutting guides to remove Dawa’s skull from just above his eyebrows all the way to the base of his neck.

“We did a lot of homework beforehand, so we were very confident in making openings and cuts inside the skull,” Ahn said.

Dorafshar then turned to his blueprints for Dawa’s skull. He trimmed “huge amounts of bone” from the skull, resized the remaining pieces and used plates and screws to jigsaw it back together to fit over Dawa’s brain. The delicate operation took about 12 hours.

Dr. Reid C. Thompson, chairman of neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University, said using computer modeling is an innovative approach to treating advanced hydrocephalus cases like Dawa’s, who would likely have experienced serious developmental problems or even death without the surgery.

Thompson said computer modeling technologies will likely become a larger part of modern surgery as doctors and engineers collaborate to try to make different types of operations faster and safer for patients.

“It’s kind of changing the way we think about what we do as surgeons,” Thompson said. “Computer modeling really is the way of the future.”

After two weeks in the hospital, Dawa was released and is recovering very well. He suffers developmental delays from his condition and his head is still larger than most children’s, but his mother said caring for him will be much easier now.

“Now it’s very easy to lift him, carry him from one place to another. I can do that by myself,” Titung said. “I am very thankful.”

A 21-year-old college student accused of killing a housemate told police he ate the victim’s heart and part of his brain after he died.

Alexander Kinyua hid the head and hands of the dead man in his family’s basement laundry room in a suburb of Baltimore, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. Kinyua, a student at Morgan State University, was charged earlier in May in another attack in which the victim was brutally beaten but survived.

Kinyua, a Kenya native, is charged with first-degree murder and other charges in the death of 37-year-old Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie. He was ordered held on no bail.

His public defender did not return a call seeking comment, and a voicemail left at Kinyua’s home was not returned.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Monica Worrell said the chief medical examiner had not yet officially identified the body parts, but that authorities believe they are those of Kodie, who was reported missing May 25. His cellphone and wallet were left in the home and police were initially told he had gone for a run.

On Tuesday, Kinyua’s father, Antony Kinyua, called detectives and reported that another son, Jarrod, found what he thought were human remains in the house where they all lived in Joppatowne.

Jarrod found two metal tins, which held a human head and two human hands. Police say Jarrod confronted his brother, who said the remains were animals.

According to charging documents, Jarrod and his father went to the basement, where Jarrod “observed that the items he observed were gone and Alex Kinyua was cleaning the container he observed them in.”

Detectives obtained a search warrant and found the head and hands in the house. Police say Alexander Kinyua admitted to killing Kodie by cutting him up with a knife and eating his heart and part of his brain.

Authorities say Kinyua told detectives the rest of the body could be found in a trash container at the Town Baptist Church in Harford County where they discovered remains.

The attack comes in the same week as a man in Miami chewed away another man’s face along a busy highway and wouldn’t stop until an officer shot him to death. Witnesses say 31-year-old Rudy Eugene growled at the officer and continued to chew away. The victim, identified as 65-year-old Ronald Poppo, a homeless man who lived under the causeway, was in critical condition and will be permanently disfigured.

On May 19, Kinyua beat a man with a baseball bat on Morgan’s campus, fracturing his skull and making him lose sight in one eye, according to Baltimore police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Kinyua was arrested May 20 and released on $220,000 bail.

Morgan officials say Kinyua studied electrical engineering and was also in the ROTC.

According to court records, the victim, Kodie, a native of Ghana, was convicted in November 2008 in Baltimore County of sex offense and assault in September 2007 and harassment, stalking and telephone misuse for making repeated calls in 2007 and 2008 to a woman. He was sentenced to at least a year and a half in jail.

A 21-year-old college student accused of killing a housemate told police he ate the victim’s heart and part of his brain after he died.

May 16, 2012, 5:14 p.m.

In the midst of the greatest time of his professional life, horse trainer Doug O’Neill is being followed around by an asterisk.

Reporters want to know about his Kentucky Derby-winning horse, I’ll Have Another. They want to know about O’Neill himself — how he got started, who he is, what he thinks about any number of topics. They want to know about young jockey Mario Gutierrez, who should have been way too green to ride the kind of race he did at Churchill Downs. They want to know about owner J. Paul Reddam, who made his money in the loan business and who named the horse by reprising a scene at home, where he sits on the couch, eats a cookie and requests another one from his wife.

But after the niceties are taken care of, they also want to know about the problems O’Neill has had with the horse-racing police, the drug testers and governing boards that fine and suspend trainers for administering medications perceived to be performance-enhancing and made illegal.

When O’Neill is in a room, that elephant is there with him.

It is troubling to watch. We are either being sold a bill of goods by O’Neill, who would then deserve an Academy Award in acting — “I swear on my kids’ eyes,” he says, and what defense could be more compelling?

Or the racing police have wrongly besmirched one of the better stories and people to come along in racing in a while. Most reporters, after a session or two with O’Neill, come away on O’Neill’s side. But none truly know. As Hall of Fame trainer Wayne Lukas said Wednesday morning, “I will not be the judge and jury, and I want you to print that.”

O’Neill is not yet 44 years old, is seldom without a big smile, is as accessible to the media — and the public — as anybody shy of Bob Baffert and is, basically, a husky, bearded teddy bear with a magnetic, self-effacing sense of humor. None of that, of course, proves his innocence. It just makes it more wished for.

The New York Times rounded up the bits and pieces earlier this week, added them up and reported that O’Neill has had “more than a dozen violations in four states in 14 years.” It wasn’t clear whether that was 13,000 violations or 13. It also reported O’Neill’s previously reported 15-day suspension and $1,000 fine last summer.

To be clear, O’Neill is not accused of injecting horses with HGH or LSD or something really sexy-sounding and performance-altering. His accusers say that before a race he has on occasion stuck a rubber hose up a horse’s nose and flushed a concoction of baking soda, water and sugar. That’s what is known as “milkshaking.” It is supposed to reduce fatigue and is not what racing considers a type-A violation. It’s a venial racing sin, but punishable nevertheless.

O’Neill has been here since last week, and has spent each day fielding surge after surge of reporters asking the question. He doesn’t duck it, nor is he thrilled by it. The trainer of the Kentucky Derby winner is usually accorded at least a three-week window of respect, admiration and softball questions. Not this trainer.

In a one-on-one conversation Wednesday morning O’Neill says, “We play by the rules, straight down the middle. We race pure. I am vigorously contesting these charges, and when we get final rulings and the truth is told, you can look forward to having a great story.”

He then heads off to a news conference near the Stakes Barns here at Pimlico. The elephant-in-the-room questions begin immediately. In response, O’Neill is not surly or defensive. He tells the gathered media members that he understands their job and that, were he in their shoes, he’d be asking the same things.

“If it bleeds, it leads,” he says. “I understand that.”

He continues: “I’ve surrounded myself here with great horsemen. Otherwise, I’d be a dead man. I’m not gonna let it get in the way.”

Pretty soon, it’s back to the normal stuff.

“My horse is progressing,” he says. “If anything, he is better now than he was at the Kentucky Derby.”

Asked about Baffert’s Bodemeister, likely the betting favorite, and the super-fast fractions he is expected to turn, O’Neill says, “Bob has won five Preaknesses and, between Mario [jockey Gutierrez] and me, let’s see, we’ve never even been in this race before. Bodemeister will be fine.”

O’Neill talks about throwing out the first ball Tuesday night at the Baltimore Orioles game: “It was high and inside,” he says. “If a batter had been in there, he would have gotten a little chin music.”

He joked about seeing a Preakness mascot, a man calling himself Kegasus, with long, stringy hair, bare chest and legs on wheels behind him in a depiction of a half-horse. “You think you are a little goofy,” O’Neill says, “and then you see something like that and you know you are OK.”

Reporters eventually drift away, notebooks full of good quotes and minds bewildered by the other stuff. Say it ain’t so, Doug.

Down the row of barns, away from the crowd but never far from the action, the 76-year-old godfather of racing, Lukas, mulls it over and sums it up.

“I don’t know Doug that well. He was just starting when I was leaving California,” Lukas says. “I do know that he won the Kentucky Derby and we don’t need this kind of publicity.

“The perception is that our sport needs to be cleaned up. The reality is that it is not that bad.”

The immediate reality is that there is a little asterisk hanging over the Preakness, right or wrong, at a time when racing can afford only blue skies.

Two brothers accused of beating a black teenager so badly they broke his wrist while patrolling an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood are set to go on trial Monday in a case with similarities to the Trayvon Martin shooting.

The brothers, who are white and Jewish, have claimed self-defense, saying the teen was holding a nail-studded board.

Local civil rights activists hope the Martin case will draw more attention to what they believe was racial profiling by neighborhood watch vigilantes.

Eliyahu and Avi Werdesheim are accused of beating a 15-year-old boy who was walking through a Baltimore neighborhood in November 2010.

The brothers pulled up next to the teen in a vehicle, then got out and ‘surrounded him,’ according to charging documents.

The passenger threw the teen to the ground and the driver hit him in the head with a hand-held radio and patted him down.

The teen remembered the driver yelling, ‘You wanna (mess) with us, you don’t belong around here, get outta here!’ according to court documents, which do not identify which brother was driving.

Charged: Eliahu Werdesheim will appear in court on Monday charged with second-degree assault, false imprisonment and carrying a deadly weapon

While the teen struggled, a third man got out of a van and kneed the teen, pinning him to the ground.

The teen told police that he stopped struggling and the third man continued to search him, while the teen insisted he didn’t have anything on him.

Eliyahu Werdesheim told the Baltimore Jewish Times that he was acting in self-defense because the teen was holding the piece of wood.

The teen picked up the board during the encounter, but put it back down, said J. Wyndal Gordon, an attorney for the teen’s family. He said the family did not want to speak publically.

After the trio left, the teen called police and was taken to a hospital with a cut on the back of his head and a broken wrist, according to court documents.

Using a photo book compiled by investigators, the teen later identified Eliyahu Werdesheim, now 24, as one of the men who assaulted him.

asdf
Neighborhood watchmen: Eliyahu Werdesheim argues that he was acting in self-defense because the teen was holding the piece of wood

He was arrested after about 10 days; his now 21-year-old brother was charged two months later.

The brothers are charged with second-degree assault, false imprisonment and carrying a deadly weapon (the hand-held radio).

The pair face up to 13 years in prison if convicted on all three counts. A third man, identified in a lawsuit brought by the teen’s family as Ronald Rosenbluth, does not face charges.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said investigators don’t believe Rosenbluth was involved in the beating. Rosenbluth said he doesn’t believe there was a third person and he was only called to the scene after the incident.

Law enforcement officials emphasize that neighborhood watchers’ responsibility is to report crime, and leave interventions to police. Most follow the rules, and confrontations are rare.

‘We owe a lot of our success to communities that have stepped up and partnered with police. They help us out,’ Guglielmi said. ‘But when they step too far, we have to hold people accountable.’

In the Florida case, authorities charged neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman this month with second-degree murder in Martin’s death Feb. 26.

Zimmerman claims self-defense, but Martin’s family claims he targeted Martin mainly because he was black. Zimmerman’s father is white and his mother Hispanic.

asdf
Similarities: The case has similarities with the shooting of Trayvon Martin – neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman was charged this month with second-degree murder in Martin’s death on February 26

It’s unusual to have a trial in which the allegations mirror a case so prominent in the news, said Steven Levin, a former federal prosecutor.

‘Since the Trayvon Martin case, people cannot help but think about that case and draw comparisons, whether they are fair or not,’ he said.

In the Werdesheim case, the six trial postponements could significantly hinder the defense’s case, Levin said.

However, the charges against Zimmerman since the last postponement may mean jurors won’t feel that they need to somehow set things right through the case they are deciding.

Eliyahu Werdesheim was suspended from the neighborhood group while Avi was never a member, according to Nathan Willner, general counsel for Shomrim of Baltimore, a group that patrols neighborhoods with a large concentration of Jewish residents and institutions in the Baltimore area.

Shomrim, which is Hebrew for guard, has about 30 volunteer, unarmed responders. It was founded in 2005 to provide security and gather information for police, Willner said.

In court: George Zimmerman is charged with shooting dead Trayvon Martin

While the case has not garnered the attention the Martin shooting has, Cortly C.D. Witherspoon, president of the local chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, has organized protests outside the courthouse during court hearings and has been frustrated by the postponements.

‘We feel that justice should have been served long ago. I would contend that the urgency for justice (in this case) is affected by the Trayvon Martin case because of the similarities,’ he said.

Members of the area’s Jewish community also rallied outside the courthouse when the brothers appeared in court to enter not guilty pleas in February. Jakob Lurman, the owner of a barbershop, was among them.

‘I have a business in the community. Shomrim do good work,’ Lurman said. ‘I don’t know what happened in that case, but I wanted to show support.’

Jewish neighborhood watch groups in New York City have faced accusations of unnecessary force against blacks, creating tensions between the Jewish and black communities.

That hasn’t yet happened in Baltimore, according to the Rev. Alvin Gwynn Sr., president of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance.

The organization of predominantly black clergy met with leaders of the area’s Jewish community to keep relationships between the two communities strong.

‘We were already working with them when this came up,’ Gwynn said. ‘It hasn’t done much damage yet.’

Baltimore is a city that’s 64 percent black, and the jury will likely have eight or nine black members. So race will be a factor, said University of Baltimore School of Law professor and practicing attorney Byron Warnken.

‘What the defense has to do is completely downplay that,’ he said, and show the force was necessary to prevent a crime.

Susan Green, an attorney for Avi Werdesheim, said last month that she hoped the media coverage would not create an atmosphere that would make it difficult for her client, but declined to comment further.

The attorney for Eliyahu Werdesheim did not return calls for comment.
