Country music star Mindy McCready was found dead Sunday at her home in Arkansas from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the local sheriff’s office said in a statement. She was 37.

Deputies from the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a report of gunshots fired Sunday afternoon and found McCready’s body on the front porch, the statement read.

McCready leaves behind two boys, one of whom is 10 months old. The infant’s father, record producer David Wilson, died of an apparent suicide last month.

The singer struggled with addiction and mental illness, often publicly. She appeared in an episode of “Celebrity Rehab” three years ago with Dr. Drew Pinsky, who said he contacted her last month after her boyfriend’s death.

“When I heard she was struggling, I did reach out to her and urged her to go to take care of herself, get in a facility if she felt she needed,” said Pinsky, who hosts his own program on CNN’s sister network HLN.

“Her biggest fear was the stigma of doing so and what people would think if she, God forbid, took care of herself. And this to me is the most distressing part of this story. She is a lovely woman, we have lost her, and it didn’t have to go down like this.”

McCready burst onto the music scene in 1996 with her debut album “10,000 Angels,” and the chart-topping hit “Guys Do It All the Time.”

In the past few years, McCready waged a public battle for custody of her elder son, Zander. She took the boy from her mother, who had custody, and fled with him to her home in Arkansas, saying she had concerns over his safety.

A judge ordered authorities to pick up the boy, who was 5 at the time, and days later authorities found McCready hiding with Zander in a closet at her home.

Country music stars expressed their condolences Sunday on hearing news of McCready’s death.

“I grew up listening to Mindy McCready … so sad for her family tonight. Many prayers are going out to them,” tweeted singer Carrie Underwood.

“It breaks my heart what addiction continues to take from this life,” singer Wynonna Judd wrote in a series of tweets. “Addiction is a disEASE & not a character flaw. When the pain becomes too much, it causes people to want that pain to stop. This is just so unbelieveable & so sad.”

A year ago, McCready posted excerpts of a book she said was upcoming about her life. She acknowledged a difficult upbringing, personal problems and the challenges she faced turning her life around.

“I haven’t had a hit in almost a decade,” she wrote in January 2012 on her official fan website. “I’ve spent my fortune, tarnished my public view and made myself the brunt of punch line after punch line. I’ve been beaten, sued, robbed, arrested, jailed, and evicted. But I’m still here. With a handful of people that I know and trust, a revived determination, and both middle fingers up in the air, I’m ready. I’ve been here before. I’m a fighter. I’m down, but I’ll never be out.”

A 44-year-old woman, whose body was found in a heavily wooded area in a Pennsylvania state park, was ruled to have committed suicide by inhaling helium gas, police said.

Teresa Mastracola from Millbourne, Pennsylvania was found deep in Ridley Creek State Park, after she went missing a little less than a week ago. Her body was found on Saturday.

Police do not suspect that foul play was involved in her death, but it is still unclear how exactly she committed suicide.

Police were initially reluctant to rule Mastracola’s disappearance as suspicious since the woman, a master sergeant in the Pennsylvania National Guard, was an avid hiker who often spent days out at a time.

She also frequently visited the park. Police have yet to find her car.

Mastracola’s former boyfriend and current roommate first notified authorities on December 2 after he returned home and didn’t find her there.

She was last seen exited her house that morning wearing scrubs. She worked as an imaging Equipment Specialist at Delaware County Memorial Hospital.

He co-workers had also started to worry about her when she did not show up for work.

Evidence: Authorities say they do not believe that foul play was involved at that Mastracola was an avid hiker who often visited the park

Though authorities have yet to provide full details surrounding Mastracola’s death, they are confident that they are dealing with a suicide and officially ruled her death the result of helium inhalation and chemical asphyxia.

Helium inhalation has become an increasingly popular method of suicide in recent years. According to a recent study, reported helium-related deaths spiked from two in 2010 to 42 in 2011.

Between 1993 and 2007 only 18 people were recorded as having died from the gas.

Helium is often used to eliminate the pain and panic that comes with asphyxiation.

Noticing this trend, anti-suicide groups have approached manufacturers of canisters used to administer helium to tell them they were being used in suicides.

THE death of an 81-year-old “mercy” killer whose body was found on a Perth beach overnight has sparked calls for new laws allowing euthanasia.

The body of pensioner Herbert Bernard Erickson was found on Perth’s Floreat Beach late on Monday, less than three weeks after he pleaded guilty to the murder of his disabled de facto wife Julie Betty Kuhn, 73, whom he cared for after she suffered a stroke.

Erickson smothered Ms Kuhn at their Armadale home in suburban Perth in January as part of their suicide pact.

Ms Kuhn had also suffered from chronic arthritis and was confined to a wheelchair.

Erickson also killed his two dogs and attempted to electrocute himself after her death, resulting in the loss of both index fingers.

He was to be sentenced on January 18 next year.

His lawyer David Manera said his family was devastated by their loss.

Mr Manera, who had planned to argue against a life jail term because of Erickson’s deep love for his partner, said it was not a simple murder-suicide.

The couple’s greatest fear was going into a nursing home, he said.

“The events were weighing increasingly heavily on his mind and the family were concerned about his mental state,” Mr Manera told ABC radio on Tuesday.

“His concern at the time that he committed the offence was for others, namely Julie and his love for her, and it would seem when he took his own life, his main concern was his love for others, namely his own family and being a burden upon them.

“So that seems to be from what I can gather … the thoughts that were going through his head.

“He wanted to be with his wife and now he is.”

Mr Manera said Erickson didn’t want to be seen as a torchbearer of the euthanasia debate, which was reignited when news of his death broke.

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett said he would not support any legislation allowing voluntary euthanasia or assisted suicide.

“Once you go down the path of euthanasia, you are going down the path of – to be blunt – legalised killing and I think that raises a whole host of other issues,” he told reporters.

Euthanasia advocate Philip Nitschke labelled the premier’s comments a “cop out”, saying politicians needed to take note of the particularly tragic case and introduce appropriate legislation.

“We get people who are acting out of compassion and love for someone they care about to have a peaceful death … and they are looking at life imprisonment,” Dr Nitschke told AAP.

“He (Erickson) was again worried about people around him. These are the acts of a caring individual and not a person we should be throwing into prison.”

Dr Nitschke said such tragedies could have been avoided with well-crafted legislation, but it required politicians to “seize the moment and act, and of course incur the wrath of the church”, which most were reluctant to do.

Opposition leader Mark McGowan said he would back such legislation.

“If people are terminally ill, they are in great pain and they make a choice personally to end their suffering, I would support that,” Mr McGowan said.

“A lot of my colleagues would not and a lot of colleagues on the other side of parliament would not.”

Authorities have placed the former head of France Telecom Didier Lombard under formal investigation for harassment.

The probe relates to the suicides of over 30 employees in 2008 and 2009 when Mr Lombard was in charge.

The launching of a formal investigation is the last stage before charges are brought in the French legal system.

Mr Lombard wrote in Le Monde that restructuring at the company may have upset employees, but challenged the idea it caused the suicides.

Mr Lombard, who was forced to step down from his position in 2010, is not being held in custody, but has had to pay bail of 100,000 euros ($125,000).

When Mr Lombard became chief executive of France Telecom in 2005 he presided over an efficiency drive in which tens of thousands of jobs were cut.

The suicide rate at France Telecom was no higher than the national average, but the deaths attracted huge media attention, the BBC’s David Chazan in Paris reports.

Many of those who killed themselves left notes blaming pressure from management, our correspondent adds.

Former judge Jacques Delisle was found guilty of first-degree murder for the murder of his wife, Nicole Rainville.

After two-and-a-half days of deliberations, a jury in Quebec City delivered the verdict.

Delisle called 911 on Nov. 12, 2009, to report that this wife had taken her own life.

Police first suspected foul play after finding gunshot powder residue near the palm of Rainville’s hand. Her palm would not have been stained with residue had she been grasping the gun, according to police.

Guitarist and singer Bob Welch, whose work in the early 1970s for Fleetwood Mac set the stage for the band’s multi-platinum success later in the decade, died on Thursday at his home in Nashville. He was 66.

According to a spokesman for the Nashville Police Department, Welch was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. The spokesman said Welch’s wife, Wendy, told police he had been suffering from health issues.

Welch joined Fleetwood Mac in 1971 as a 24-year-old living in Paris, just as the group was making the transition away from being a British blues rock band and into the 1970s commercial powerhouse that it became.

As a singer and guitarist for the group, Welch was lesser known than the pair who replaced him — lead vocalist Stevie Nicks and guitarist Lindsey Buckingham. His work on early albums such as “Future Games,” “Bare Trees” and “Heroes Are Hard to Find” with band mates who included Mick Fleetwood and John and Christie McVie set the tone for what was to come.

Welch left the band in 1974, and it was his departure that set the stage for Fleetwood Mac’s hit-making line-up when Nicks and Buckingham were hired to take on his two duties. That would become the group’s most successful lineup, releasing the 1975 album “Fleetwood Mac” and “Rumors,” the band’s acclaimed 1977 hit album.

“My era was the bridge era,” Welch told the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 1998, after he was excluded from the Fleetwood Mac line-up inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “It was a transition. But it was an important period in the history of the band. Mick Fleetwood dedicated a whole chapter of his biography to my era of the band and credited me with ‘saving Fleetwood Mac.’ Now they want to write me out of the history of the group.”

Welch went solo and scored a top 20 hit in 1977 with “Ebony Eyes.” The album from which it was culled, “French Kiss,” featured a number of former Fleetwood Mac members, as well as a rendition of “Sentimental Lady,” a song originally recorded with Fleetwood Mac but reworked by Welch.

Over the next six years Welch released five more studio albums, but none was as successful as his debut. He continued to record music for the next two decades; his final album, “His Fleetwood Mac Years and Beyond, Vol. 2,” was the second volume of a series of reworkings of his earlier output.

Welch was born in Los Angeles in 1945, the son of successful Hollywood movie producer Robert Welch, best known for his work with Bob Hope on a series of “Paleface” films, as well as producer of the 25th Academy Awards.

“I grew up in a showbiz environment,” Bob Welch told the Daily Tennessean in 2003. “Jonathan Winters would come to the house. Yul Brynner lived across the street.” After graduation from high school, the younger Welch moved to Paris for a while, but returned to Los Angeles in the late ’60s and joined a band called the Seven Souls.

After releasing a single that failed to make the charts, Welch returned to Paris, living there until he received a phone call from Fleetwood asking him to come to London. Fleetwood met him at the airport, Welch told the Nashville Tennessean in 2003. “He was driving a yellow VW. He was 6-6 and weighed about 120 pounds. He was a strange-looking human being.”

Despite his appearance, Fleetwood proved able to offer Welch one thing that the guitarist needed in his life. “I just wanted to play guitar in a good band,” he told the Tennessean. “I wanted to make the music I love. I wanted to travel the world and have adventures.”

A 92-year-old El Cajon woman who sold “death kits” to help people commit suicide was sentenced Monday to five years’ probation and a $1,000 fine after pleading guilty to failing to pay income tax on her profits.

As part of a plea bargain with federal prosecutors, Sharlotte Hydorn, a retired teacher, pledged to no longer sell the kits or advise people on how to commit suicide.

District Court Magistrate Bernard Skomal agreed to allow the Internal Revenue Service to determine how much Hydorn should pay in back taxes and penalties. Prosecutors have put the figure at $25,709.

Hydorn sold 1,300 of her kits, consisting of plastic bags that could be fastened tightly around a person’s neck. Each bag had an opening to allow helium gas to fill the bag.

Federal prosecutors opted to charge Hydorn with failing to pay income tax rather than file a more difficult to prove charge of assisting someone in committing suicide.

Outside the federal courthouse in San Diego, Hydorn told reporters she still believes people should be assisted in ending their lives.

“I wanted people to die at home,” she said.

According to court documents, Hydorn did not bother to cash many of the checks sent to her by people buying the kits, priced at $40 to $60. She did no advertising, but word of the kits spread quickly.

Hydorn said her interest in helping people end their suffering was the result of watching her husband suffer for two years in a hospital with colon cancer before dying.

“The cancer had gone to his brain,” she said. “He wanted to go home, and I couldn’t take him home.”

In court, Hydorn was told she will need a special permit to enter Mexico to visit family members. She told reporters she has no intention of starting another death-kit business in Mexico.

“Oh, for goodness sake, at the age of 92, I’m not going to start a new business,” she said. “I’m completely out of the business.”
