Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman in the November 2008 attacks in Mumbai that left 166 dead, was hanged Wednesday morning in Pune, Indian officials said.

Mr. Kasab, 25, was executed at 7:30 a.m. in Pune’s Yerwada jail, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde told reporters Wednesday morning. The hanging followed a rejection of Mr. Kasab’s mercy plea on Nov. 6 by the Indian president, Pranab Mukherjee.

Mr. Kasab, who is Pakistani, was convicted in May 2010 by a trial court in Mumbai of murder, conspiracy and waging war against India, and was sentenced to death. He appealed to the Maharashtra High Court, which upheld the sentence, and then to the Supreme Court, which rejected the appeal in August.

“His execution is a tribute to the victims” of the 2008 attacks, R.R. Patil, the home minister of Maharashtra, told I.B.N. news.

A press release from the government of India said:

The petition for clemency filed by condemned prisoner Mohammed Ajmal Mohammed Amir Kasab was rejected by the President on 5th November, 2012. The sentence was executed today at 7.30 a.m. at Yeravada Central Prison, Yeravada, Pune.

The arrest of two women on Monday over a comment on Facebook has sparked off widespread anger in India.

One of the women had criticised the shutdown of Mumbai in her post, after the death of politician Bal Thackeray, while the other “liked” the comment.

The women, accused of “hurting religious sentiments”, were released on bail after appearing in court.

The death of the controversial Hindu nationalist politician on Saturday afternoon brought Mumbai to a halt.

In her Facebook comment on Sunday, 21-year-old Shaheen Dhanda wrote: “People like Thackeray are born and die daily and one should not observe a ‘bandh’ [shutdown] for that.”

Her 20-year-old friend Renu Srinivasan ‘liked’ the status.

‘Abuse of authority’

The Times of India newspaper responded with the headline: “Shame: 2 girls arrested for harmless online comment.”

The newspaper said the arrests were a “clear case of abuse of authority”.

“The girl was not slandering anybody, nor was she promoting hatred towards any community”.

The newspaper said the charges should be dropped and a case of “wrongful arrest” registered against the police.

Press Council of India Chairman Markandey Katju has written a letter to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan criticising the arrests.

“We are living in a democracy, not a fascist dictatorship. In fact, this arrest itself appears to be a criminal act, since… it is a crime to wrongfully arrest or wrongfully confine someone who has committed no crime,” Mr Katju, a former Supreme Court judge, said.

Telecommunications Minister Kapil Sibal was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency that he was “deeply saddened” by the arrests.

“It is their point of view, and enforcement of these laws are not to ban people from expressing their views,” he said.

In recent months, police have arrested a number of people in cases which are being seen as a test of India’s commitment to freedom of speech.

In October, Ravi Srinivasan, a 46-year-old businessman in the southern Indian city of Pondicherry, was arrested for a tweet criticising Karti Chidambaram, son of Indian Finance Minister P Chidambaram. He was later released on bail.

In September, there was outrage when a cartoonist was jailed in Mumbai on charges of sedition for his anti-corruption drawings. The charges were later dropped.

And in April, the West Bengal government arrested a teacher who had emailed to friends a cartoon that was critical of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He too was later released on bail.

Security is tight in Mumbai as large crowds gather for the funeral of Hindu nationalist politician Bal Thackeray.

India’s financial capital has come to a virtual halt, with businesses closed and taxis staying off the streets.

Thackeray, who had been ill for some months and died on Saturday aged 86, was revered by followers as the founder of the right-wing Shiv Sena party

But his fiery rhetoric was blamed for inciting tensions between Hindus and Muslims during the 1993 Mumbai riots.

Some 900 people died in the sectarian bloodshed.

Never convicted

Large numbers of police were deployed in Mumbai to ensure security during Sunday’s funeral and cremation.

Tens of thousands of people reportedly lined the road to Shivaji Park to pay their respects as the body of Thackeray – still sporting his trademark sunglasses and covered in the national flag – was carried by.

A cartoonist by trade, Mr Thackeray formed the Shiv Sena in 1966, partly with a view to keeping South Indian migrants out of Maharashtra state and to halt the spread of Islam.

The BBC’s Yogita Limaye says Mumbai is preparing for a “major funeral”

In 2002 and again in 2008, he called on Hindus to form suicide squads to attack Muslims.

A government inquiry into the riots in Mumbai in 1992 and 1993 blamed Shiv Sena members and several party leaders for taking a major role in organising attacks on Muslims.

Mr Thackeray was never convicted of any offence in connection with the riots.

He denied being anti-Muslim but said he was fiercely opposed to those who were pro-Pakistan.

“Only Marathis [residents of Maharashtra] have the first right over Mumbai,” Mr Thackeray wrote last year in the Shiv Sena newspaper.

He was also instrumental in the renaming of Bombay as Mumbai to break with its colonial past.

The arrest of an anti-corruption cartoonist in India on charges of sedition has sparked criticism.

Aseem Trivedi was held in the city of Mumbai over the weekend for his cartoons allegedly mocking the Indian constitution.

He was also charged with insulting the national flag and remanded in police custody until 16 September.

The cartoonist has been participating in the anti-corruption movement led by campaigner Anna Hazare.

India’s media and prominent citizens have condemned Mr Trivedi’s arrest, calling it a “wrongful act”.

“From the information I have gathered, the cartoonist did nothing illegal and, in fact, arresting him was an illegal act,” Chairman of the Press Council of India Markandey Katju told The Hindu newspaper.

“A wrongful arrest is a serious crime under the Indian Penal Code, and it is those who arrested him who should be arrested.”

Mr Katju, a former Supreme Court judge, asked how drawing a cartoon could be considered a crime and said politicians should learn to accept criticism.

“Either the allegation is true, in which case you deserve it; or it is false, in which case, you ignore it. This kind of behaviour is not acceptable in a democracy,” he said.

Senior journalist and the editor of CNN-IBN news channel Rajdeep Sardesai said he found it “amusing, but also very dangerous that you can get away with hate speech in this country, but parody and political satire leads to immediate arrest”.

A former senior police officer and lawyer YP Singh told the Mint newspaper that from “what I have heard, it seems he [Mr Trivedi] can be booked at the most under a law to prevent insults to national honour and not on serious charges like sedition, which attract much harsher punishment”.

If proved, a sedition charge can invite a three-year prison term in India.

The micro-blogging site Twitter was also full of messages criticising Mr Trivedi’s arrest.

Police held him acting on a complaint by a Mumbai-based lawyer who said his cartoons were anti-India.

Earlier this year, a website carrying Mr Trivedi’s anti-corruption cartoons was banned by the police in Mumbai, reports say.

In April, Indian police arrested a professor in Calcutta for allegedly posting on the internet cartoons ridiculing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He was later released.

An Indian company has launched what it claims is the country’s first vagina tightening cream, saying it will make women feel “like a virgin” again. The company says it is about empowering women, but critics say it is doing the opposite. The BBC’s Rajini Vaidyanathan in Mumbai reports.

It is certainly a bold claim. As the music starts playing on the advertisement for the 18 Again cream, a sari-clad woman is singing and dancing.

It is an unusual take on Bollywood.

“I feel like a virgin,” she croons, although the advert makes it clear she is not.

Her shocked in-laws look on, before her husband joins her for some salsa-style dancing.

“Feels like the very first time,” she continues, as she is twirled around.

Cut away to her mother-in-law who begins by responding with a disgusted look on her face, but by the end of the advert even she has been won over, and is seen buying the product online.

Restoring emotions’

This video is designed to market a vaginal “rejuvenation and tightening” product, which was launched this month in India.

The makers of 18 Again, the Mumbai-based pharmaceutical company Ultratech, say it is the first of its kind in India (similar creams are already available in other parts of the world such as the USA), and fills a gap in the market.

Analysis

Ancient India has always been celebrated for its openness and lack of hypocrisy, for its modernity and inclusive attitude; but in one aspect, it has remained rigid: the need for women to be virgins.

Because society was divided into four rather inflexible social groups, straying from or intermingling between these castes was seen as a state worse than death.

So to ensure racial purity, inter- caste marriages were strictly forbidden, with children from such marriages being declared to be illegitimate.

Amorous adventures between the classes, however was freely permitted.

So, there were two kinds of women: one for procreation and one for pleasure and obviously the one who bore your children had to be from the same caste and definitely a virgin.

Chastity, thus, had little to do with waiting for the right man or exploring one’s sexuality and everything to do with preserving racial purity, for only virgins could hope to attain the aspired status of wife.

Considered to be a spiritual obligation, Hindu wedding ceremonies even today centre round the Kanyadaan, which literally translates as the gift of a virgin.

Ultratech’s owner, Rishi Bhatia, says the cream, which is selling for around $44 (£28), contains natural ingredients including gold dust, aloe vera, almond and pomegranate, and has been clinically tested.

“It’s a unique and revolutionary product which also works towards building inner confidence in a woman and boosting her self esteem,” says Mr Bhatia, adding that the goal of the product is to “empower women”.

Mr Bhatia says the product is not claiming to restore a woman’s virginity, but to restore the emotions of being a virgin.

“We are only saying, ‘feel like a virgin’ – it’s a metaphor. It tries to bring back that feeling when a person is 18.”

But the company’s advertising strategy has attracted criticism from some doctors, women’s groups and social media users, who say the product reinforces the widely held view in India that pre-marital sex is something to be frowned upon, a taboo which is even seen as sinful by some.

“This kind of cream is utter nonsense, and could give some women an inferiority complex,” argues Annie Raja from the National Federation of Indian Women, which fights for women’s rights in the country.

Ms Raja says that rather than empower women, the cream will do the opposite, by reaffirming a patriarchal view that is held by many here – the notion that men want all women to be virgins until their wedding night.

“Why should women remain a virgin until marriage? It is a woman’s right to have sexual relations with a man, but society here still says they should not until they are brides.”

“Being a virgin is still prized, and I don’t think attitudes will change in this century,” says Dr Mahinda Watsa, a gynaecologist who writes a popular sexual advice column in the Mumbai Mirror and Bangalore Mirror newspaper.

Dr Watsa has answered more than 30,000 questions from Indians wanting sexual advice, and says a common question from men is how to find out whether their wife is a virgin, or from women who are keen their husband doesn’t know they are not.

“Men still hope they’re marrying a virgin, but more girls in India, at least in the towns and cities, are having sex before.

Khajuraho Temple - sculptural sexual scenes depicted on the Temple wall
Ancient India has always been celebrated for its sexual openness

“Women write to me – and say, what do I do? I’ve had sex with other people but how do I convince people that I’m a virgin?”

Dr Watsa says that in major cities and towns more people are sexually active before marriage – more women working and having independence has led to women having more confidence and interactions with men.

“There is definitely more casual sex and sex before marriage happening in India nowadays,” says Dr Nisreen Nakhoda, a GP who advises on sexual health for the medical website MDhil.

Dr Nakhoda is sceptical about how a cream such as 18 Again can work.

“Tightening the vagina is done by the vaginal muscles so I don’t know how a local cream can do the job,” she says, but believes it has the potential to do well in India because even if practices are changing, attitudes are not catching up as fast, so some people would try anything to cover up any hint of their actions.

“It’s all very under wraps and discreet, no-one really discusses their sex lives with their friends or boyfriends,” says Dr Nakhoda.

She says she has even heard stories of companies which work at night, such as call centres, finding their toilets full of condoms which they cannot flush down, as some couples find it hard to find a place to be alone.

A survey of more than 5,000 people by India Today magazine last year showed that fewer than 1 in 5 (19%) of respondents were open to the idea of pre-marital sex, or live-in relationships, with a quarter of people saying they did not object to sex before marriage, as long as it was not happening in their family.

‘Turmoil’

“We’re brought up being told that having sex with someone is a bit vulgar,” says one 26-year-old virgin.

“When you’re younger it’s hard to have a boyfriend, and most of my friends who did had to go to great lengths to lie to their parents,” adds the girl, who says she hopes to lose her virginity to her husband.

Another 27-year-old girl, who first had sex at the age of 20 and has had three sexual partners, believes a lot of the stigma comes from the idea that a man wants to feel like he owns a woman, adding that the idea that a women who sleeps with multiple partners might be called a “slut” is something all societies have to contend with.

“The Indian mindset is in a state of turmoil,” says Dr Nahkoda,

“The young generation wants to be hip and cool and try out sex before marriage, but they’re still brought up in the traditional set up where it’s taboo to have sex before marriage. This leads to a lot of confusion in many teenagers.

“On one hand you’re supposed to be the traditional demure Indian bride, but on the other hand, you don’t want to have to wait for sex because people are marrying later. Temptations are coming their way and people are no longer resisting,” says Dr Nakhoda.

The introduction of a vagina tightening cream, follows a recent controversy over a vagina skin lightening cream. Both are examples of how traditional values are clashing with newer ones in today’s India.

Annie Raja says these kind of products are all about giving men control over how a woman should behave or look, and that this is outdated and dangerous.

But Ultratech’s Rishi Bhatia says the fuss is unwarranted.

“Men have so many products they can buy to enhance their sexual pleasure, this is just putting sexual enhancement in the hands of women.”

Rajesh Khanna

July 18, 2012

Rajesh Khanna, whose success as a romantic lead in scores of Indian movies made him Bollywood’s first superstar, died Wednesday after a brief illness. He was 69.

His wife, actress Dimple Kapadia, and two daughters were at his bedside when he died at his home in Mumbai, said his son-in-law, actor Akshay Kumar.

Khanna began his career in the mid-1960s in romantic films that were hugely popular. He played the lead role in some 120 of the 170 movies in which he appeared and won scores of awards.

His enormous success was a new phenomenon in India. Screaming fans surrounded him whenever he appeared in public. Women married his photograph and wrote him letters in their blood proposing marriage.

He was born Jatin Khanna on Dec. 29, 1942, in the northern Indian town of Amritsar. He took to acting while in school and adopted the name Rajesh Khanna when he began his career in films.

After his early success he became a favorite with film directors wanting a sure box-office winner. During the 1970s, he had 15 consecutive movies that set new sales records. He was feted as the king of romance and mobbed by hysterical fans, who kissed his car when they couldn’t get near him.

“Khanna witnessed unbelievable popularity, such that no one had ever seen or imagined. In fact from 1969 to 1973, it was a one-horse race,” said Javed Akhtar, a screenwriter and poet.

Khanna debuted in 1965 with “Akhri Khath,” or “The Last Letter.” A few films followed where the young handsome actor was noticed and gained fame. Then in 1969, came the romantic drama “Aradhana,” or “Worship.” The film was a runaway success and Khanna’s career saw a meteoric rise.

In 1973, Khanna surprised his millions of fans by marrying Kapadia, a young and upcoming actress. The couple had two daughters, but they soon separated. Kapadia complained of his mood swings and bad temper when she moved out with her daughters. However, she returned to take care of Khanna after he fell sick two months ago.

After a nearly three-decade reign in Bollywood, Khanna saw his popularity dim when action films became the rage and younger stars rose to the top. His fall was swift as Khanna turned to alcohol and for the last few years of his life, he became almost a recluse.

As his film career faded, he shifted to politics and was elected to Parliament in 1992 and served there until 1996.

In Mumbai, large crowds of people gathered outside his house to mourn. As news of his passing became known, the crowds swelled and police had to push back the throng. Film stars and directors visited his home to offer condolences. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also conveyed his wishes to Khanna’s family and fans in a Twitter message.

Khanna’s funeral will take place in Mumbai on Thursday, family sources told Press Trust of India.

“It’s a terrible day for all of us in the industry,” said Saira Banu, who acted in nearly a dozen films with Khanna. “He was a very humble person despite his superstar status.”

Reserve Bank of India Governor Duvvuri Subbarao

June 18, 2012              12:48 AM CT

India unexpectedly left interest rates unchanged as the fastest inflation among the biggest emerging markets narrows scope to bolster a struggling economy.

Governor Duvvuri Subbarao left the benchmark repurchase rate at 8 percent, the Reserve Bank of India said in a statement in Mumbai today. Only four of 25 economists in a Bloomberg News survey predicted the outcome, with 19 expecting a 0.25 percentage-point cut and the remainder a half-point reduction.

The decision contrasts with rate cuts in Brazil and China in the past three weeks as the impact of Europe’s turmoil fans through Asia and dominates the agenda of a Group of 20 summit starting in Mexico today. Subbarao’s room to counter the weakest Indian growth in almost a decade is being limited in part by a plunge in the rupee, which has stoked an inflation rate already above 7 percent.

“It’s prudent to pause at this moment as risks to inflation are strong,” Indranil Pan, chief economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. in Mumbai, said before the decision. “There is little the Reserve Bank can do to revive growth. The onus is now on the government.”

The rupee traded at 55.5075 against the dollar from 55.4975 earlier. The BSE India Sensitive Index extended its decline, dropping 0.6 percent as at 11:05 a.m. in Mumbai. The yield on the 8.79 percent bond due November 2021 rose five basis points, or 0.05 percentage point, to 8.12 percent from 8.07 percent. Asian stocks advanced today on optimism the outcome of the Greek election has reduced the risk of a breakup of the 17-nation euro area, with the MSCI Asia Pacific Index climbing 1.5 percent as of 2:42 p.m. in Tokyo.

Inflation Risks

“While growth in 2011-2012 has moderated significantly, headline inflation remains above levels consistent with sustainable growth,” the central bank said today. “Importantly, retail inflation is also on an uptrend.”

The Reserve Bank said “future actions will depend on a continuing assessment of external and domestic developments that contribute to lowering inflation risks,” adding it “stands ready to use all available instruments and measures to respond rapidly and appropriately to any adverse developments” amid global risks.

India’s consumer prices rose 10.36 percent in May from a year earlier, a report showed today.

Indian Prime MinisterManmohan Singh is grappling with an economy set back by trade and budget deficits, corruption scandals and infighting in the ruling coalition that has stymied his efforts to lure more foreign investment to ease bottlenecks.

Junk Status

Gross domestic product rose 5.3 percent in the three months through March from a year earlier, the least since 2003, imperiling the prime minister’s goal of 9 percent annual gains to cut poverty. Standard & Poor’s has warned it may demote India’s credit rating to so-called junk status.

Inflation accelerated to 7.55 percent in May, the fastest pace in the BRIC group of largest emerging markets that also includes Brazil, Russia and China. The government’s projected fiscal deficit of 5.1 percent of GDP in the year through March 2013 is the group’s widest.

“We’ll have a combination of weak growth and still-high inflation for longer,” said Rajeev Malik, a senior economist at CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets in Singapore. “The political will to implement solutions is still missing.”

The Reserve Bank lowered rates on April 17 for the first time since 2009, to 8 percent from 8.5 percent. It said at the time the weaker rupee, energy costs and India’s fiscal deficit posed inflationary risks that my limit room for further cuts.

Current Assessment

The central bank in January and March also reduced the amount lenders need to set aside as reserves by a combined 125 basis points, to 4.75 percent, to ease cash shortages at banks.

“Our assessment of the current growth-inflation dynamic is that there are several factors responsible for the slowdown in activity, particularly investment, with the role of interest rates being relatively small,” the central bank said today. “Consequently, further reduction in the policy interest rate at this juncture, rather than supporting growth, could exacerbate inflationary pressures.”

The government’s setbacks include the suspension in December of plans to allow foreign companies such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to open supermarkets after a coalition ally objected.

Growth in Asia’s third-largest economy has also slowed after Subbarao raised rates by a record 3.75 percentage points from March 2010 to October 2011 to try and contain inflation.

Singh vowed on June 6 to revitalize growth outlining projects including new ports, roads and power plants. The impending resignation of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to contest India’s presidential poll may prompt a cabinet overhaul that also seeks to shore up investor sentiment.

Moderating Economy

Singh is joining world leaders at the G-20 summit today and tomorrow, which begins a week of crisis meetings taking place after Spain this month became the fourth euro-region nation to seek a bailout amid the weakest global economy since the 2009 recession.

Some companies in India have felt the impact of a moderating economy that is being squeezed by price pressures. Car sales fell in May at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., and the Indian units of Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co., after a rise in gasoline tariffs.

The nation’s “mix of growth and inflation is expected to remain challenging,” said Singapore-based Ramya Suryanarayanan, an economist at DBS Group Holdings Ltd. The temptation to address the situation with rate cuts is “dangerous,” she said.

The Indian film community is reeling from the gruesome murder of young actress and model Meenakshi Thapa.

Apr 20, 2012         1:12 PM ET

The Indian film community is reeling from the shocking and gruesome murder of a young actress and model.

Meenakshi Thapa, a struggling actress who appeared in the 2011 Hindi-language thriller 404 and in television commercials, was allegedly kidnapped and killed by two aspiring actors she met on the set of her latest movie, Heroine.

Officers removed some of Thapa’s remains from a home in Allahabad on Wednesday.

Amit Jaiswal and Preeti Surin were arrested last weekend and confessed to the killing, according to Indian media.

The two suspects — a man and a woman — were purportedly convinced the 26-year-old Bollywood actress hailed from a wealthy family because she hid her modest background and feigned a lavish, affluent lifestyle.

The suspects embarked on a road trip to Gorakhpur, an Indian city bordering Nepal, luring Thapa to join them. There, they allegedly held her hostage and demanded a ransom from Thapa’s family. Though her mother paid a portion of the money demanded, the actress was strangled and beheaded.

“They wanted to extort money from her family. They have confessed to the crime. She was [strangled] in a hotel and her body was hacked into pieces and thrown in a water tank. They threw her head from a moving bus while travelling back to Mumbai,” the lead detective told the U.K.’s Telegraph.

Indian police are continuing the investigation.
