A court in Milan convicted former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, of tax fraud on Friday and sentenced him to four years in prison. Mr. Berlusconi is also currently on trial over charges that he paid for sex with an underage prostitute. He has denied the accusation.

Although the ruling was Mr. Berlusconi’s fourth lower-court conviction, it was his first since he stepped down as prime minister in November, after years in which his personal legal battles often eclipsed the work of his government.

Besides being a blow to Mr. Berlusconi personally, the ruling comes at a time when his center-right party is unraveling and Italy is in the throes of the most dramatic political transition since the early 1990s, when he first came to power. It was just just two days ago that he announced that he would not lead his party in Italy’s next elections.

A lawyer for Mr. Berusconi said the former prime minister would appeal the ruling, which must go through two more rounds of appeal before becoming definitive. It is unlikely that he will ever serve jail time. Even if a definitive ruling were reached before the statute of limitations in the case runs out next year, Mr. Berlusconi would enjoy immunity so long as he remained in the Parliament.

However, the judges also banned the former prime minister from holding public office for five years, a penalty that would be applied only if his conviction were upheld by the highest court. They also took the unusual step of reading the reasoning behind the verdict, which normally takes between 60 and 90 days after a ruling. That could speed up the appeals process.

On Wednesday, Mr. Berlusconi, 76, said he would not lead his People of Liberty party in Italy’s national elections next spring to replace the unelected technocratic government of Prime Minister Mario Monti, who has been guiding Italy through a perilous economic crisis. But he said that he would stay involved in politics.

The investigation at the heart of Friday’s ruling centered on television and movie rights that Mr. Berlusconi’s Fininvest holding company bought television rights for American programs in the 1990s from companies in the United States. Judges said that Mr. Berlusconi and other executives of his Mediaset, Italy’s largest private broadcaster, inflated the price of the programs through a series of offshore companies and funneled the overflow into illegal slush funds.

The court on Friday acquitted the chairman of Mediaset, Fedele Confalonieri, a longtime Berlusconi loyalist.

Mr. Berlusconi, who has major holdings in real estate, insurance, advertising and publishing, as well as Mediaset, has been involved in dozens of legal cases over the years. Between 1997 and 1998, when Mr. Berlusconi was the opposition leader, he was convicted by lower courts on charges of tax fraud and corruption.

In another case, known as All Iberian, prosecutors said Mr. Berlusconi and his associates used offshore accounts to illegally finance Italy’s former socialist party leader, Bettino Craxi, who was Mr. Berlusconi’s former political patron.

All three previous lower court convictions were either overturned on appeal or thrown out for lack of evidence — or the statute of limitations ran out before a definitive highest court ruling was reached.

It seemed she was on the verge of model stardom until her mother slammed on the breaks.

But Cindy Crawford’s daughter Kaia is continuing to blossom, and will surely be ready when her parents decide the 10-year-old is ready to go in front of the camera again.

She was dwarfed by her 5ft 9in mother as they enjoyed a day out in the celebrity enclave of Malibu.

Picture perfect: Cindy Crawford and her daughter Kaia were the spitting image of one another as they headed to Nobu Malibu for some sushi

But she has clearly inherited the beauty that made Cindy, 46, one of the world’s highest paid models.

The pair shared a joke as they visited Nobu in the summer sunshine with Cindy’s son, Presley, 13.

And if Kaia, who turns 11 on Sunday, is frustrated that her gig modelling Versace’s children’s range earlier this will be her last for a while, she certainly did not appear so.

Kaia, whose businessman father Rande Gerber was also a model, was picked by the label to showcase the range after the launch of the first Young Versace boutique in Milan.

Little darling: Kaia has her mother's timeless good looks and apparently her elegant taste in clothes Little darling: Kaia has her mother’s timeless good looks and apparently her elegant taste in clothes

Following in the footsteps of her supermodel mother, who was a muse of the late Gianni Versace, she wore highlights from the designer range which caters to children up to the age of 12.

But despite the widespread use of pre-teen models Cindy had a change of heart about her daughter embarking on working so young.

In February said: ‘At this point, she’s too young to pursue a career. There aren’t even a handful of jobs for a 10-year-old girl.’

Handsome boy: And son Presley can turn a few heads, too Handsome boy: And son Presley can turn a few heads, too

However, the mother-of-two, who herself was discovered by a photographer aged 16, says it is fine if Kaia wants to pursue modelling later in life.

She added: ‘But if she’s 17 and wants to try it, of course, what can I say?

‘She kind of jokingly said – I’m not even sure if it was jokingly – “I might model first because you don’t have to know how to do anything, but then I want to be a baby nurse.”‘

Man of the hour: Cassano celebrates his goal

15:37 EST              18 June 2012

Too little, too late and just not good enough, the Republic of Ireland succumbed to the inevitable in Poznan on Monday night and crashed out of Euro 2012 after being outclassed by Italy.

The damage already done by the humiliating defeats to Croatia and Spain, Giovanni Trapattoni’s deflated troops were unable to pull off the shock of the tournament to halt Italy’s progress to the quarter-finals.

They held on for 35 minutes, albeit with their backs up against a big Poznan wall, but when Antonio Cassano nodded Italy into the lead, Ireland were never likely to recover. Italy had to wait until the last minute for Mario Balotelli’s second, but it was no surprise when it came.

Through: Italy celebrate Cassano's first-half strikeThrough: Italy celebrate Cassano’s first-half strike

MATCH FACTS

Italy: Buffon, Abate, Barzagli, Chiellini (Bonucci 57), Balzaretti, Pirlo, Marchisio, Thiago Motta, De Rossi, Di Natale (Balotelli 74), Cassano (Diamanti 62).

Subs not used: Sirigu, Maggio, Ogbonna, Giaccherni, Borini, Montolivo, Giovinco, Nocerino, De Sanctis.

Booked: De Rossi, Buffon, Balzaretti.

Goals: Cassano 36, Balotelli 90.

Rep of Ireland: Given, O’Shea, Dunne, St. Ledger, Ward, McGeady (Long 65), Whelan, Andrews, Duff, Keane (Cox 86), Doyle (Walters 76).

Subs not used: Westwood, Kelly, McShane, Gibson, Hunt, O’Dea, Green, McClean, Forde.

Booked: Andrews, St Ledger, O’Shea. Sent off:Andrews.

Referee: Cuneyt Cakir (Turkey)

The danger is whether this much-improved performance gives Trapattoni the ammunition to stay on as manager. If he does, he won’t have the same players.

The performance may have been much improved but it could only paper over the cracks of an unhappy Ireland squad who have been ruthlessly exposed on their long-awaited return to the big stage.

They waited 10 years for a place in a major finals and it was over in five days.

For the first time in Euro 2012, they did manage to get to the five-minute mark without conceding a goal, and in fact if Kevin Doyle had kept his head and his feet they could have taken the lead after just 20 seconds.

The Wolves striker seized on a loose, weak pass by Andrea Pirlo from kick-off but lost his footing as he tried to run at centre-backs Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini, allowing the pair to clear between them.

The Italian response was immediate and Ireland fans may have feared the worst when Antonio Di Natale found space on the right and his cross was met by Daniele De Rossi, whose meaty volley flew harmlessly wide.

Captain for the night Damien Duff’s first act on the occasion of his 100th cap – and arguably his last – was to win a free-kick in a good position on the right.

His in-swinging cross was met by Richard Dunne, whose header was instantly blocked by Chiellini. The loose ball fell to Keith Andrews but his shot was blocked.

Although Italy did win a couple of corners, Ireland looked in control at the set-pieces with Dunne and John O’Shea making vital clearing headers. As in Moscow, Dunne was like a one-man blocking machine throughout the game.

Curler: Daniele de Rossi has a shot on goal

Curler: Daniele de Rossi has a shot on goal

O’Shea was quickest to react when Cassano found room on the right and his cross into the middle was put behind by the Sunderland defender.

And when Cassano played another intricate pass into the middle for Di Natale, it was Dunne who made the crucial block.

Sean St Ledger also made a vital block in front of Given’s goal to keep out a Cassano drive, with the Italians claiming a penalty which was rightly turned down by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir.

Battle: Glenn Whelan and Alessandro Diamanti vie for possession

Battle: Glenn Whelan and Alessandro Diamanti vie for possession

But as much as Ireland must have been satisfied with their much-improved defensive work, offensively they were simply not a threat and lost possession too easily.

Glenn Whelan in particular was guilty of hopelessly loose passes in promising positions, ruining one move when Pirlo was feigning injury, to Robbie Keane’s annoyance. Aiden McGeady and Andrews both made similar basic errors.

It was an hour before Gianluigi Buffon had a save to make, and that was a standard pick-up in front of him when Andrews shot from 25 yards.

Winner: Cassano beats Keith Andrews to Pirlo's corner

So when a Whelan pass from outside his own area went astray, Di Natale was played in by Thiago Motta, and the AC Milan striker danced round Given but saw his shot from a difficult angle cleared by St Ledger.

But Ireland failed to clear that danger properly, resulting in a 25-yard shot from Cassano which deceived Given, who made another uncharacteristic error and spilled the ball to concede a corner unnecessarily.

Inevitably, Ireland paid for their No 1’s error.

Diving in: De Rossi challenges Damien Duff

Diving in: De Rossi challenges Damien Duff

Pirlo’s near-post corner was met by Cassano in front of Andrews and although Given got a hand to the ball, it had crossed the line before Duff managed to clear via the crossbar. You could feel the shoulders of all 11 players sag, never mind see it.

The Italian assault on the Irish goal continued immediately after the break with Dunne providing another crucial block to deny Pirlo before Federico Balzaretti squirmed past O’Shea in the corner and secured space for Cassano at the edge of the area with a clever pull-back, only for Dunne’s frame to keep out the shot.

High hopes: Given spreads himselfHigh hopes: Given spreads himself

After Pirlo had wasted a promising free-kick, as O’Shea walked as close to a red card as any booked defender could be allowed, Given’s only other action was a routine save from Cassano’s replacement, Alessandro Diamanti, who also wasted a set free-kick at the edge of the Irish penalty area.

Man of the hour: Cassano celebrates his goal

When a similar opportunity fell to Ireland in the 78th minute, after Jon Walters again underlined his dangerous credentials by winning the clear foul from Leonardo Bonucci’s messy challenge, it was Andrews who stepped up.

While his drive flew through a crowd of players, Italy captain  Buffon responded with a firm two-handed save to keep the shot out. It was as near as Ireland came to causing an upset.

Off: Keith Andrews is escorted from the pitch after his red cardOff: Keith Andrews is escorted from the pitch after his red card

And any chance of that was buried in the dying minutes when Andrews was sent off for his second bookable offence and substitute Balotelli grabbed a brilliant second.

Andrews, who was booked late in the first half for a foul on Thiago Motta, appeared to be cautioned for dissent by Cakir. His head gone completely, he then angrily booted a ball high into the stands.

Settler: Balotelli doubles Italy's lead late onSettler: Balotelli doubles Italy’s lead late on

Settler: Balotelli doubles Italy's lead late on

Seconds later, Balotelli sealed the win, and Italy’s place in the quarter-finals, with a wonderful volley on the turn from a Pirlo corner, skilfully beating O’Shea and Given.

The game was well and truly up for Ireland.

Ryder Hesjedal has made history.

The Victoria, B.C., native became the first Canadian to win one of cycling’s three Grand Tour events Sunday, wrapping up the 2012 Giro d’Italia with an excellent performance in the 21st and final stage in Milan.

He raced the 30-kilometre course through the streets of Italy’s second largest city in 34:15.

This is only the second time in the Giro’s 95-year history that the overall lead changed hands on the final day, the last being in 1984 when Italian Francesco Moser took over the lead from Frenchman Laurent Fignon in the final stage.

Sunday’s stage was an individual time trial, which is something that Hesjedal, of the Garmin Barracuda team, has been known to perform strongly in. He trailed the pink jersey leader Joaquim Rodriguez by 31 seconds coming into the final stage.

Rodriguez finished second, just 16 seconds back after 21 stages, with Thomas De Gendt of Belgium third, one minute 39 seconds behind.

“I knew Rodriguez was going to be very determined,” Hesjedal told CBC News from Milan, after the race. “He’s lost some situations like this before in the time trial, and I know how hungry that would make him and I knew I had to go for everything — an unbelievable ride today.”

Hesjedal’s career highlights

  • 2012 Giro d’Italia winner
  • 2012 Giro d’Italia overall leader, Stages 7-9 & 14
  • 2012 Giro d’Italia, Stage 4 (Time Trial) — 1st
  • 2011 Tour de France, Team GC — 1st
  • 2011 Tour de France, Stage 2 (Time Trial) — 1st
  • 2011 Tour de France, Stage 16 — 3rd
  • 2010 Tour de France, Team GC — 7th
  • 2010 Tour de France, Stage 17 — 4th
  • 2010 Tour de France, Stage 4 — 4th
  • 2010 Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal — 3rd
  • 2010 Amstel Gold Race — 2nd
  • 2009 Vuelta a España, Stage 12 — 1st
  • 2008 Giro d’Italia, stage 1 (Time Trial) — 1st
  • 2007 Tour de Georgia, KOM — 1st
  • 2007 Canadian Championship (Time Trial) — 1st
  • 2003 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championship – silver
  • 2001 U23 World Mountain Bike Championship — silver

Hesjedal, whose previous best was a sixth-place finish in the 2010 Tour de France, emerged over the last three weeks of battling across the plains and up the mountains of Italy as one of the new stars in the sport.

Rodriguez had worn the pink jersey, as general classification leader of the race, for 10 days over the course of the race and gave it his all in the time trial, but just fell short.

“I believed it until the end and so it’s almost harder for me,” said Rodriguez. “It’s only now, with hindsight, that you see the mistakes. Maybe we should have distanced Ryder in the first week. But it went how it went and Ryder won.

“He was the strongest in the three weeks. I did my best and I don’t have any regrets.”

Hesjedal, meanwhile, held the pink jersey in stages 7-9 and stage 14.

“Since the first day I pulled [the jersey] on, I knew I had a good chance,” he said. “Everyone was underestimating me. I had to stay focused, my team was 100 per cent and the team rode unbelievable every day.”

Always the gentleman, Hesjedal credited the whole Garmin Barracuda team from the chefs to the masseuses and the public relations staff.

“The nine of us [riders] just have to go out and ride our bikes and focus on our jobs, and I’m just happy to get it done for everybody.”

Hesjedal is now among the favourites for the Tour de France, starting June 30th at Liege, Belgium, if the effort in the Giro allows him to recover fully in time.

Steve Bauer, of St. Catharines, Ontario, had been the previous best Canadian finisher in the Grand Tour (which also includes the Vuelta a Espana, in August) with a fourth-place finish in the 1988 Tour de France.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued a statement immediately after the race to congratulate Hesjedal.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to congratulate Ryder Hesjedal for his amazing victory in the Giro d’Italia, riding for team Garmin-Barracuda,” the statement said. “This remarkable win in one of bicycle racing’s most grueling competitions is a testimony to Mr. Hesjedal’s training, endurance, skill and competitive spirit.

“It is a particularly proud moment for Canada given that this is the first time in the history of professional cycling that a Canadian has won one of the sport’s three grand tours.

“We thank Mr. Hesjedal for this defining moment in Canadian sport and wish him well in his upcoming races, including this year’s Tour de France.”

On Twitter, seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong praised Hesjedal’s achievement.

“Congratulations to (at)ryder–hesjedal on his incredible victory in the .giro. Gotta love it when the best man wins,” tweeted Armstrong.

Toronto cyclist Michael Barry added: “Emotional moment watching the Canadian flags go up in Milan and hearing the anthem. Congrats (at)ryder–hesjedal You’ve inspired us all.”
