One of the great pleasures of Nashville is that it arrived fully formed, with a sure sense of what it wants to accomplish dramatically, and with a masterful command of atmosphere and setting. No other new show this season projects such effortless assurance, hits so many notes of emotion. Hell, no other scripted show hits so many just plain notes: Its music is as interesting as its storytelling.

As created by Callie Khouri, Nashville‘s set-up is deceptively simple. A one-time queen of country music, 40 year old Rayna Jaymes (Connie Britton) is being pushed aside, commercially and in other areas, by the new generation of country stars as embodied by the young Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere). It’s a set-up that has figured in tons of movies, All About Eve being, perhaps, the paradigm for specifically female competition. But right from the jump, Nashville made this template its own. When director R.J. Cutler cuts, near the start of the pilot, from Rayna at home, exhaustedly removing her hair curlers, to Rayna on the Grand Ole Opry stage, vibrant, her tresses now flowing, singing an upbeat song that ought to be called “I’m Already Gone,” it accomplishes a number of things crucial, and quickly.

It says that Rayna doesn’t live in a bubble, that she feels the work that goes into her job. It says that she can crank up her energy to give an exciting performance — and Britton, doing her own vocals, has been shot and edited in such a way to make it seem as though she could bear comparison to generational equals such as Faith Hill or Martina McBride. And the fast-paced song says that Rayna is not a hide-bound traditionalist who’s too stubborn to know what sells in 2012; she’s out there doing her best to compete in the arena that now contains everyone from Little Big Town to Taylor Swift… almost, because therein lies the drama.

As quickly as we saw what big-time country music looks like, Nashville moved itself down a notch in the music industry hierarchy, introducing us to her band leader, Charles Esten’s Deacon Claybourne, a decent but jaded industry lifer who wishes he’d become a successful singer-songwriter (Deacon probably has a lot of Kris Kristofferon and John Prine albums in his collection, and, sentimental sap that he is, probably idolizes sentimental sap Townes Van Zandt) but is instead gritting his teeth into a smile and leading Rayna’s band. We met his niece, Clare Bowen’s Scarlett, who’s waitresing at the Bluebird Cafe, a real Nashville twang-boite that’s like the country-music equivalent of a hip New York or LA comedy club, a place where a fix of pros and would-be pros go to try out new material. She writes poetry and is an industry innocent, or at least feigns it well, and she’s got a boyfriend, Avery, a semi-pro working the “alt-country-punk” angle (good luck with that, Avery — at your very best, you’ll some day become Robbie Fulks).

In the clip that got the most advance publicity, Rayna met Juliette after they performed at an Opry salute to a legendary songwriter, Watty White (played by J.D. Souther; more about him in a bit). The two size each other up and aim twangy insults, Juliette talking to Rayna as though the latter is 100 years old, and Rayna sweetly implying that Juliette is a, well, whore. But after the encounter, the camera lingers on Rayna, who says to her hangers-on, “What the hell wasthat?” as though she can’t believe the nerve of that little tart. (Later, Deacon uttered the same line after a close encounter of another kind with Juliette.)

Rayna is writer Khouri’s creation for a certain kind of country star. Rayna tells the smug new pasha head of her record company that she’s been with the label for 20 years. Chronologically, and given the music she sings and the songs she said inspired her. Specifically cited was John Conlee’s 1978 hit “Rose-Colored Glasses”; me, I might have picked Crystal Gayle’s “Ready for the Times to Get Better,” #1 the same year, but maybe too on-the-nose for a show this subtle. Rayna might be viewed as a combination of Reba McEntire (who, like Rayna, stayed with MCA Records for decades and had to launch a mid-career revival), Faith Hill (the tight jeans and the pop balladry), Lorrie Morgan (country royalty; one-time youthful sex symbol as well as star), and a smidges of Roseanne Cash, Patty Loveless, and Pam Tillis — with a lot of Britton’s own distinctive character-building prowess spread over all of it, to be sure.

There’s no doubt Rayna is in a jam: Her new album, Sweet and Sorrow, has already stiffed, and she’s getting pressure from her record company to co-headline a tour with Juliette, which translates to “be this brat’s opening act.” At home, she gets loving support and not much else from house-husband Teddy (Eric Close), and is reminded of how the times are changing when her two daughters sing along to Juliette Barnes’ hits instead of their mama’s. (The daughters are played by internet musical wiz-kids Lennon and Maisy Stella.)

Her dad is Powers Boothe, playing a Nashville political power-player, Lamar Wyatt, as a cross between Jim Jones and a lizard. In the pilot, Lamar’s quest to install a tool to do his bidding as mayor seemed primarily like an excuse to give Teddy something to do (he was talked into candidacy by the end of the hour). And Lamar served as the mouthpiece confirming just how much romantic history there is between Rayna and Deacon by implying that one of Rayna’s daughters was sired by Deacon, not Teddy. But if this subplot also serves to give us a glimpse into the town’s black population with the opposing mayoral run by Coleman Carlisle (Bunny Colvin — ‘scuse me, The Wire‘s Robert Wisdom), the candidate Rayna was planning to back, then this section of the series has more promise than it might initially seem. (My reservation is that it becomes a distracting time-waster that merely echoes Kelsey Grammer’s Boss.)

Nashville‘s nods to the younger generation are as precise yet artfully blurred as the creation of Rayna. The shorthand way of looking at Juliette is to describe her as a more openly ornery LeAnn Rimes or a contemporary Tanya Tucker (big voice, small stature, combustible nature). I’ve seen other reviewers cite Taylor Swift, but that’s not right: Juliette, unlike Swift, doesn’t write her own material (a major plot point to get her involved with the easily-flattered Deacon). The contempt older Nashville hands reserve for Juliette (such as the oft-rerun “thank God for auto-tune” joke in the show’s promos) reminds me of the receptions Olivia Newton-John and Shania Twain received early on in their careers. Yet as we hear, Juliette (and, thus, Panettiere) does have a pretty good voice and she really knows how to sell a song on a stage — in this, she’s part of the post-American Idol generation, especially Kellie Pickler and Carrie Underwood.

Youth is also served by Bowen’s Scarlett and Sam Palladio’s Gunnar (what kind of country-music name is Gunnar? well, think of this songwriter as a variation on real-life hit-writer Kostas). Scarlett and Gunnar owe as much to grande dame Emmylou Harris and alt-country exemplars like Kelly Hogan, Jimmie Dale Gilmore (check out Gunnar’s high register), James McMurtry, and Buddy and Julie Miller as they do any corporate-Nashville act. Which is why they’re going to succeed more as first-tier songwriters and second-tier performers — a different career trajectory than the ones Rayna and Juliette have taken.

The guy who recognizes the way Rayna can use the young ‘uns is Souther’s Watty White, presented here as a “legendary” songwriter and producer who also seems to host a radio show and serves as music guru, matching song with artist, to any number of big-name stars. In this, his character is a mixture of Harlan Howard, Jack Clement, and Nashville‘s very own musical director T Bone Burnett (married to Khouri). Souther is himself a songwriter who penned hits for Linda Ronstandt and the Eagles in their ’70s heyday, and was part of that era’s L.A. country-rock scene along with the Byrds’ Chris Hillman and Buffalo Springfield and Poco’s Richie Furay. His restrained-verging-on-stiff acting here sets a perfect tone — Watty is a man who sees through the game on every level, he’s a little bit uncomfortable with the adulation he’s receiving even as he accepts it as his due.

It’s Watty who we saw in Nashville‘s final moments this week, setting up a connection between Rayna and the Scarlett-and-Gunnar duo, serving up a song that will probably change all their fortunes and presaging fresh friction with Juliette. The nice thing about the way Khouri has delineated Juliette is that she’s not a villain — yes, her druggie-mom may be a cliche, but it registers as an authentic one with truth: Juliette cannot match Rayna’s effortless warmth with her audience because Juliette has spent much of her life shutting down emotionally, to survive that mother.

Nashville has as much to say about business economic models as it does about romance; about the manufacturing of image and its influence on art both negative and positive. It’s really entertaining, and much more than merely entertaining.

Every so often, there is moment when the runway is transported from the bustle of New York Fashion Week to somewhere else, and Vera Wang took her audience to an idealized India at her spring preview Tuesday morning.

It’s not that the clothes were costume-y; they were without ornate trappings or touristy gimmicks. The clothes were quiet, delicate and lovely, sometimes requiring a trained eye to notice Wang’s nod to the Nehru collar or choli jacket, but Wang’s show at Lincoln Center draws the sophisticated A-list crowd.

They could appreciate the soutache embroidery, which looks a bit like braided lace, that decorated a white sleeveless V-neck shift, and the chartreuse brocade peplum top with gold jeweled epaulettes paired with a chantilly hand-pieced lace sheath.

The collarless sleeveless tailored jackets were a bit more obvious in their reference to India, but not too much so.

“The collection is out of India, but India is just the starting point,” Wang said in a backstage interview. “There is no belly dancing, there are no sarongs, there are no saris. It is about the sort of discipline about Indian men’s clothes like Nehru, against the mystery and sensuality of Indian women — but not literally.”

Wang has visited India, but really only as a pit stop. “This is really my take on a modern, sleek India with incredible femininity and sensuality.”

Even if Wang didn’t find her inspiration for the collection in a faraway land, however, she would have moved the editors, stylists, retailers and celebrities (Stacy Keibler caused a front-row frenzy) gathered at Lincoln Center on Day 6 of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. She has an artful touch that makes her both a creative force and a red-carpet favorite — ideas often at odds on the catwalk.

A series of portrait-collar dresses with open necklines gave the illusion that you were seeing more than you should but there was a clever corset to keep things above board.

Don’t be surprised if some of these looks head out to Hollywood later this month for the Emmy Awards. “Well, that is a possibility. That is a distinct possibility,” Wang said.

Each letter of the first and middle names rules 9 years of life.  Ages 54 to 81 are ruled by the sum of the y+e+a+r of birth and the 7th, 8th, and 9th letters of the name.

June 27th, 1949              Vera Ellen Wang

1+9+4+9 +12 (l is the 12th letter of the alphabet) + 5 (e is the 5th letter of the alphabet) + 14 (n is the 14th letter of the alphabet) = 54

So the number 23 (sum of the y+e+a+r of birth), 31 (sum of the 7th, 8th, and 9th letters of the name), and 54 (23+31=54) rule her ages fifty-four to eighty-one.

The winner of a cockroach-eating competition died shortly after eating dozens of the live insects and worms in Florida, authorities have said.

Edward Archbold, 32, became ill and collapsed at a pet shop where the contest took place in the city of Deerfield Beach on Friday.

About 30 others competed in the event at the Ben Siegel Reptile Store.

Officials are waiting for the results of an autopsy to determine Archbold’s cause of death.

‘Unorthodox contest’

None of the other contestants became ill afterwards, the sheriff’s office said.

“We feel terribly awful,” said Ben Siegel, the owner of the shop.

“He looked like he just wanted to show off and was very nice,” he said, adding that Archbold did not appear to be ill before the competition.

A lawyer for Mr Siegel said all the contestants had signed disclaimers “accepting responsibility for their participation in this unique and unorthodox contest”.

The grand prize for the winner was a python, and Archbold had planned to sell the snake to a friend who took him to the contest, according to the shop owner.

The next Avatar film will see Saldana reunite with Aussie actor Sam Worthington in James Cameron’s much anticipated sequel.

“They are in pre-production so we are just I guess waiting for Jim to call us and tell us we have to pack it up and go,” she says.

“I am so excited, I can’t wait. I had such a wonderful time so to get to repeat that experience and to get to work with all the actors that I worked with again, it will be a treat.”

Back in May 2011, after relocating his production company to the MBS Media Campus, James Cameron announced that he would personally fund the construction of a massive solar array to power the next to “Avatar” sequels.

“These are things the studios need to be thinking about,” Cameron told the Washington Post. “When I do my next film, we’re going to go much farther than we did in terms of running a green set.

Late last month, Stellar Energy announced that they had completed work on Cameron’s vision – successfully installing 3,692 solar modules to the rooftops of the director’s production studios.

“The Avatar sequels are a great opportunity to show how we, as a production company, can make clean green solar energy as we go. Going into Avatar 2 and 3, we are going to be able produce enough solar energy to handle the entire electrical demand for our computers and performance capture systems here at MBS Media Campus,” said Cameron. “We have to do this for the future, for our children, and as a moral responsibility to the planet.”

In total, the three arrays will provide some 960 kW of power, something Cameron says will help fulfill his goal of a net zero production for both sequels.

Beyond the green themes present in both production and the films’ plot lines, the 58-year-old director also has big plans to use some of the box office proceeds to benefit environmental organizations.

“Some percentage of the presumably-massive ‘Avatar’ sequel gross will go to charity,” he revealed last year. “Fox has partnered with me to donate a chunk of the profits to environmental causes that are at the heart of the ‘Avatar’ world.”

“Avatar” 2 and 3 are expected to hit theaters sometime between 2015 and 2016.

FOR an actor whose face will grace our screens until at least 2015, Zoe Saldana is unusually frank about her fear of being out of work.

Perhaps she’s being a little paranoid given that Hollywood directors are throwing scripts her way and have secured her for the sequel of the world’s biggest grossing film, Avatar. Or maybe it’s the perennial problem actors face – once they reach the top, they feel compelled to keep themselves there.

“There’s the fear of not knowing what is going to come next and you suffer because you don’t want to go on vacation,” Saldana tells Insider. “That fear is what drives me but also it is what keeps me without really having much of a life, which I am sort of growing tired of.

“But at the same time it is also healthy in that it keeps me always working hard. Even when I’m not shooting I am always prepping, I am always working and studying and I love doing that, I love staying on my toes.”

The 34-year-old is on the phone to promote her new movie, The Words, a comparatively low-budget ($6 million) romantic drama also starring her real life boyfriend, the very handsome Bradley Cooper.

The film tells the story of a struggling author who becomes a bestseller by putting his name to someone else’s work. It also stars Jeremy Irons and Dennis Quaid. The Words is a much smaller film than Avatar, which put Saldana on the map in 2009 after becoming the biggest film ever made with box office takings of more than $2.78 billion globally.

“It is definitely a smaller movie but I treated it with as much respect and love as any other movie, whether it be as big as Avatar or as small as The Words,” she explains.

Before speaking to Saldana, we are warned of some off-limits topics.

They include her relationship with Cooper and her upcoming film project, Nina, a biopic on the life of Nina Simone.

Saldana and Cooper met on the set of The Words in New York last year.

Saldana had previously dated actor Keith Britton while Cooper has a long list of leading lady exes including Renee Zellweger, Olivia Wilde and Jennifer Lopez.

Seeing the film, there’s no denying the on-screen chemistry between Saldana and Cooper, who play husband and wife.

“You will work with actors that could be your very best friend and you might not have any chemistry on screen and sometimes maybe you guys don’t get along at all but you have chemistry,” Saldana says. “I was very happy and Bradley and I felt it very early on that there was something there.”

But when asked about Cooper specifically, Saldana talks about him as an actor rather than as a boyfriend.

She is careful not to give anything away as to the status of their relationship despite the couple being photographed together numerous times.

“It is easy for actors to play characters that are in love if they have the friendship and respect and sort of feel safe with each other,” she says.

“We are going to work and we are constantly in a vulnerable state and we are having to also be very intimate, so you can only achieve that when you are very professional and you have a lot of respect for yourself and for the actor and what you are doing. Bradley is a very dedicated actor and very respectful and comes very prepared.”

Saldana has starred in more than 25 films but it wasn’t until Avatar that her career took off.

She’s also appeared in Center Stage, Crossroads, The Terminal, Star Trek and Dirty Deeds.

Fame isn’t something she gets or cares to understand.

“I don’t really know what fame is. I understand it and I see it but it is not something that my nature really gets,” she says.

And Saldana is finally embracing Hollywood and what it has to offer.

“The older I get I am enjoying it more because I am letting go of certain things but also inheriting a lot of anxiety that comes from living such a transitional and temporary unstable life,” she says. “You work for three months and then you could be off for six.”

Saldana is currently filming Star Trek Into Darkness and will follow that up with Christian Bale thriller Out Of The Furnace and Clive Owen crime drama Blood Ties. She’s also due to play Nina Simone in Nina (but we’re not allowed to talk about that, remember).

And then there’s the next Avatar film, which will see Saldana reunite with Aussie actor Sam Worthington in James Cameron’s much anticipated sequel.
