Zach Johnson won the Colonial for his first victory since winning at Hogan’s Alley in Fort Worth two years ago, pulling ahead Sunday when Jason Dufner finally faltered.

Johnson was assessed a two-stroke penalty for failing to replace his ball to its original position after marking it on the 18th hole. That left him with a two-over-par 72 and a one-stroke victory.

Johnson moved his original ball mark out of the line of Dufner’s putt on the 18th green. But he forgot to move it back before his final five-foot putt.

Johnson finished at 12-under 268 for his eighth PGA Tour title.

Dufner closed with a 74. Tommy Gainey was a distant third at seven under after a 67.

Dufner’s only two PGA Tour victories came in the last four weeks, a stretch when he also got married.

After winning last week at the Byron Nelson Championship, he was trying to match Ben Hogan, his hero, as the only players to win both PGA Tour events in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in the same year. Hogan did it in 1946, when the tournaments weren’t played in consecutive weeks.

Roger Chapman won the Senior PGA Championship, holding on for a two-stroke victory after leading comfortably throughout the final round at Benton Harbor, Mich.

Chapman led by five after 54 holes and was never really threatened. His closing one-over 72 was his worst score of the tournament, but it was enough to give the Englishman a win at the major championship.

Chapman, who had never won on the Champions Tour, finished at 13 under. He bogeyed three of the last five holes but had enough of a cushion that it didn’t matter.

John Cook was at 11 under after a 69. Hale Irwin shot 68 to finish another stroke back.

Kenny Perry had a tournament-record 62 at Harbor Shores to finish five shots behind in ninth place.

::

Luke Donald took the top spot in the world rankings from Rory McIlroy for the third time in 10 weeks, successfully defending his title in the BMW PGA Championship at Virginia Water, England.

The Englishman won the European Tour’s flagship event by four strokes, closing with a four-under 68 to finish at 15-under 273 on Wentworth’s West Course.

It’s the sixth change at the top of the rankings between Donald and McIlroy in 12 weeks. McIlroy missed the cut at Wentworth after a second-round 79. Last year at Wentworth, Donald took the No. 1 spot from Lee Westwood when he beat Westwood in a playoff. Donald also won the PGA Tour’s Transitions Championship in March.

Scotland’s Paul Lawrie and England’s Justin Rose tied for second. Lawrie had a 66, and Rose shot 70.
