A NURSE who stole from elderly dementia patients and took a necklace off a dying man has been jailed for three months.
Vicki Bodnar, 56, pleaded guilty in a courtroom to 18 charges, including theft and obtaining property by deception, the Geelong Advertiser reports.
The Geelong Magistrates’ Court heard that most of Bodnar’s victims were suffering dementia and other serious health issues.
Magistrate Ann McGarvie said Bodnar’s actions exploited society’s most vulnerable victims.
Her thefts had helped fund her addiction to methamphetamine, also known as ice.
The court heard that Bodnar worked at a Norlane nursing home for 12 years and committed the offences between December 3, 2010, and December 3, 2011, including:
On December 3, 2010, Bodnar removed six cigarette packets that belonged to residents and sold them for $5 each.
Between April 16 and May 16, 2011, Bodnar removed a $100 gold bracelet from the wrist of a resting resident and pawned it for cash.
During this time, a second victim was eating in the dining area when Bodnar stole binoculars and a framed picture from his room.
On June 3, 2011, Bodnar removed four large character prints worth $100 each from the nursing home and sold them for $70.
On September 2, 2011, Bodnar stole 33 CDs worth $660 that were used in music therapy and pawned them for $16.50.
On October 12, 2011, staff at the nursing home were told a resident suffering a serious heart condition wasn’t expected to survive.
Bodnar proceeded to remove a $100 gold St Christopher’s medal and chain from the neck of the victim, who later died.
She pawned the necklace to buy drugs.
Other charges included theft of a master key from the nursing home and coffee tables from a resident’s room.
On December 3, 2011, police searched Bodnar’s house and found antiques, jewellery and picture frames all listed as missing, the court heard. Drugs were also found.
Police prosecutor Anne McKeon said this was the most serious example of employee theft involving the most vulnerable in our community.
“We can’t have this type of offending happen in our community,” she told the court. “The victims are elderly, suffering dementia and incapable of caring for themselves.”
