Justin Howard left it all on stage Saturday night – including some of his own blood – before being crowned America’s top air guitarist.
The 27-year-old Chicago resident rocked Metro and the panel of judges at the U.S. Air Guitar National Finals, beating nearly two dozen of the country’s top air rockers for the right to represent the United States at next month’s 16th annual Air Guitar World Championships in Oulu, Finland, where he will battle champions from more than 20 other countries.
A four-time winner of the Chicago regional championship, Howard – known on stage as Nordic Thunder – unleashed his signature bare-knee power slide in Saturday’s final round, shredding his knees and feet as well as his imaginary instrument.
“My power move is my knee slide,” said Howard, who lives in Ukrainian Village and works as a video editor for Rotary International in Evanston when he’s not sliding across a stage in a loincloth made of leather and hair weaves, his long, black hair flying behind him. “Pain is temporary. Air guitar is forever. I live by that motto, and it paid off tonight.”
While some air rockers rely on flashy routines and death-defying stunts to wow the crowd, Howard said he knew his familiar knee slide would likely bring down the house Saturday.
“I showed people that you can win an air guitar contest at a national level without having to climb speaker towers or do back flips,” he said. “I stayed true to my style and just played my air guitar and it worked out.”
Chicago has become an undeniable force in the world of air guitar. Not only did the city host the national finals for the first time Saturday, but five of the finalists were from the city, including last year’s national champion, Romeo DanceCheetah – otherwise known as Matt Cornelison, 29, a video producer from Wicker Park.
There will be room for a new champion next year, however. Just moments after winning his title Saturday, Howard said he plans to retire from competitive air guitar after the world championships.
“I think that the air guitar (world) title needs to be here,” he said. “I want to bring it home and hang up the leathers and be done with competing.”
