Tim Tebow might be No. 2 on the New York Jets‘ quarterback depth chart, but — in the opinion of Time magazine — he’s No. 1 in the NFL.

Tebow is the only NFL player on the magazine’s top 100 most influential people in the world. He’s one of six athletes to make the list, along with the NBA’s Jeremy Lin, soccer’s Lionel Messi, golf’s Yani Tseng, tennis’ Novak Djokovic, and South African amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorious.

According to Time: “No athlete fed America’s sports obsession more than Tebow. We drafted Lin to write about his New York neighbor: Lin says the Jets quarterback ‘is unashamed of his convictions and faith — and he lives a life that consistently reflects his values, day in and day out.'”

Tebow, traded from Denver, met most of his new teammates this week at the first off-season workouts for the Jets. He’s the backup to Mark Sanchez but is expected to be used in various packages that will exploit his ability to move the ball, usually on the ground.

“The things we’re able to do with Tim all throughout the game, all the wildcat stuff we’re able to utilize with him, all the short yardage we’ll build around him, it’s like we’re going to be able to be two separate teams now,” left guard Matt Slauson told the Newark Star-Ledger. “But as far as I know, Mark is still going to be our guy, and that’s the way we’re all looking at it right now.”

Hold on to your hats, folks, because quarterback Tim Tebow is now 5-1 as a starter for the Denver Broncos.

This despite having perhaps the most awkward throwing motion in NFL history and being called the worst quarterback in the league by many.

The Broncos won when Matt Prater kicked a 37-yard field goal with 29 seconds left in overtime.

Tebow carried the ball 22 times for 67 yards -– the most carries by a quarterback in a game since 1950. He also passed for a touchdown and outplayed Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers.

The Broncos (6-5) won their fourth straight game and are in second place in the AFC West. The Chargers (4-7) have lost six in a row and are in last place in the AFC West.

“This is a special team, a special team when you have a bunch of guys that when things aren’t going good, we get closer instead of pulling apart,” Tebow said after the game. “The No. 1 reason we are like that is because we believe in each other, we believe in the coaching staff.”

And Coach John Fox believes in Tebow.

“Tim has outstanding ability,” Fox said. “He proved it at a high level of college football in the SEC at Florida. The option is something that he is comfortable with. I think our team has adapted to it. Right now it’s working in the run portion of our offense. We still have some growth to do in the pass portion.”

The already-infamous ‘Tim Tebow Anti-Abortion’ Superbowl ad hasn’t even aired yet, but it’s already stirred up plenty of controversy.

The ad purportedly involves Tebow’s mother telling the story of how she became ill while she was pregnant with him and was urged by doctors to have an abortion for her own safety. As the legend goes, she chose not to listen to their recommendations, and gave birth to a baby who grew up to be named Florida’s Mr. Football, which is every mother’s dream.

The subtext of this ad demonstrates a relatively new approach for the anti-abortion set, and I have to say I’m impressed. Their normal tactics are usually about as subtle as a slap in the uterus. But the premise of this Mother Tebow ad appears to dig a little deeper, at least on the surface. Its view is a bit more nuanced; more thoughtful. It shows the consequences of an enormous and difficult life decision, and demonstrates one situation in which a woman’s choice to go through with a pregnancy results in a positive outcome. At least, if your definition of a positive outcome involves the existence of Tim Tebow. I’m on the fence there.

It should be noted that Tim Tebow’s mother ostensibly wanted to give birth so badly that she was willing to risk her life to carry her pregnancy to term. This places her apart from a majority of women who seek to terminate their pregnancies because they did not plan them and either can’t afford or do not want to have a child. It should also be noted that Mrs. Tebow already had four children when she was pregnant with Tim. It is unlikely that the ad focuses on the fact that she would have left four children motherless if she had died as a result of her commitment to bringing Tim Tebow into the world and thus into the Florida Gators.

No, the brilliant part of this ad is not what it glosses over, but that it targets with laser precision a dread that I have come to believe lurks in the reptilian brain of every anti-abortionist, and even some who are pro-choice: the irrational fear that if their mothers had had the option to choose not to give birth to them, they wouldn’t be alive today.
