Taryn M. Fairbanks, 33, has been charged with sexual misconduct with a minor in the first degree in an incident in which she performed a sex act on a 17-year-old boy.
Fairbanks, previously known as Taryn Stermer, worked at Garfield High as a language arts teacher and the adviser for the school newspaper from September 2006 to the end of June 2010.
Investigators said Fairbanks attended a party at the student’s home on June 23. The boy told detectives he’d “heard that she had attended another school party in the recent past, and decided to invite her,” because he “thought it would be funny if a teacher showed up to the party,” said the statement of probable cause.
After Fairbanks arrived at the late-night party, the boy said the teacher began asking his friends about him and “kept texting him to join her and to hang out with her” in a different part of the house, detectives said.
At the urging of his friends, the boy decided to accompany the teacher to his basement, he told police. Fairbanks then performed a sex act on the boy inside a guest bedroom, investigators said.
A mother of an unrelated student alerted police after she intercepted a text message addressed to her daughter that discussed the details of the alleged sexual contact.
Police alerted Garfield High’s principal, who “quickly learned that the rumors of the teacher’s sexual activity were wide-spread among students at Garfield, and even among students at other schools.”
Students told police Fairbanks had attended a previous party with some students in early June, and “drank alcohol and smoked marijuana with them,” the report said. They said the woman had been intimate with a 19-year-old, who graduated from Garfield High last year.
When later questioned by detectives, Fairbanks admitted to having had sexual relations with the 17-year-old, but denied having attended any previous parties with students. She told investigators she’d only gone over to the student’s home to “drop off some t-shirts and supplies for the school newspaper retreat.”
The former teacher told investigators she has an issue with alcohol, and was “in the midst of an alcohol relapse at the time of the incident.”
She also admitted she’d had sexual relations with the 19-year-old graduate, but said it hadn’t taken place at a party.
Fairbanks resigned from her teaching post on June 30, and moved to Las Vegas, where she currently resides with her family.
Prior to teaching at Garfield High, Fairbanks was also employed by the Renton School District and the Kent School District.
