Weathercaster Stephanie Abrams isn’t going to let something like a stuck elevator get in the way of her doing her job.
Abrams, who works for the Weather Channel, was filling in for Al Roker on Monday’s “Today” show when the elevator car she was riding in stopped moving.
“All of a sudden we were jostled around and dropped, and we all kind of gasped,” Abrams told Matt Lauer and Anne Curry via cell phone just after 7 a.m.
“We can hear other cars come down,” she told Lauer. “But we’re just hanging out. We’re fine, but we’re just sitting here waiting.”
Abrams ran into transportation problems when she was shuttling between her Weather Channel studio, which sits across the street from the “Today” show’s window-fronted facility.
She and Roker host “Wake up with Al” from the Weather Channel spot from 6 to 7 a.m.
Lauer and Curry started the show noting the empty chair next to them.
“Stephanie is stuck in an elevator, in that building, right now,” Lauer said.
Faulty elevators and the “Today” show staff seem to have a strong connection. In February, Ann Curry was trapped in an elevator in The New York Times building. Curry tweeted about the experience at the time.
Abrams said she was in the elevator with her hair, makeup and wardrobe team.
Lauer then asked if she could do the forecast, which she did, flawlessly.
“Worst-case scenario, you’re stuck there four or five days,” Lauer said. “At least you have your hair and makeup people; you’ll look great when they rescue you.”
“Good point,” Abrams said.
Abrams and her team were freed after about 10 minutes, and she was in the “Today” studio by 7:25 a.m.
“I was hoping for some hunky firemen to rescue me,” she said when it was all over.
