The parents of a 13-year-old girl who died after being hit by a falling tree
branch have paid tribute to their “beautiful” daughter.
Sophie Howard, 13, was struck by the branch as she sat on a bench in
Middletons Road Recreation Ground in Yaxley, near Peterborough, on Thursday
afternoon.
Friends told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph they were in the park because
their school was closed on a day of widespread industrial action involving three
teaching unions.
Her parents Martin and Laura Howard said in a statement: “Sophie was a
beautiful girl who had so many friends and we will miss her with all our
heart.”
Speaking of her love for school, music and running, they added: “She was a
typical girlie girl and loved socialising, make-up and fashion. Her friends were
very important to her.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our friends and
family for their support at this difficult time. Sophie has a twin brother who
is also suffering greatly.”
Friends of the year eight student, who attended Sawtry Community College,
raised the alarm after she was hit and two doctors from a nearby surgery rushed
to her aid.
She was taken by ambulance to Peterborough City Hospital, where she died.
A Facebook page set up in Sophie’s honour has attracted hundreds of people
with many family and friends, as well as those who had never met her, paying
tribute.
Friend Ellis Howe posted: “Soph, you’re too young … you were intelligent,
funny, kind and always had that lovely smile on your face. I can’t believe I was
laughing and talking with you on Wednesday.”
Holly Lane referred to Sophie as her “science buddy” and said “I will really
miss you – you will never be forgotten”.
A statement from the college said:
“Sophie was a popular young lady who approached her time at the college with
poise and maturity.
“She was bright and cheerful and
was held in high regard by all those who knew her, especially her friends and
teachers.
“She was an extremely able student
who appeared to have a great future in front of her; she worked hard and had
made excellent progress during her time in the college.”
Police said the incident is not being treated as suspicious and had been
passed onto the coroner. An inquest into her death is expected to open on
Monday.
