Former Bundaberg surgeon Jayant Patel has spent his first night in jail after being convicted of killing three patients and permanently injuring a fourth.

The 60-year-old had pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter of Mervyn Morris, Gerry Kemps and James Phillips, and the grievous bodily harm of Ian Vowels.

But after 50 hours of deliberations a Brisbane Supreme Court jury found him guilty last night of all four charges relating to his stint as director of surgery at Bundaberg hospital from 2003 to 2005.

The victims’ families and former patients say the verdicts bring closure even before Patel’s sentenced tomorrow.

Mr Kemps’ wife Judy says it’s been a long five years but she finally feels free.

Former Patel patient and patient advocate Beryl Crosby says Patel’s been found guilty and it doesn’t matter what happens from here.
