After three months of heated competition, which included blind auditions, battle rounds, knockouts, killer live performances and tributes, the third season of “The Voice” came to a close with the crowning of a new potential superstar. Would it be pop songstress Cassadee Pope, Scottish rocker Terry McDermott or soulful family man Nicholas David?

After a two-hour, live performance-packed finale that generated the most votes cast in the show’s history, host Carson Daly revealed that Pope is “The Voice,” making Blake Shelton a two-time-winning coach; McDermott and David finished second and third, respectively.

“I don’t know [what to say],” Pope said smiling but looking stunned. “I feel amazing. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. Thank you Blake, the producers, hair and makeup, Carson, the band, Christina, thank you so much!”

In the moments before her name was announced, Pope admitted she was anxious in leaving her band to try her hand at being a solo act but now feels validated.

“I was nervous to step out on my own and this experience made me feel like I could do it,” she said. “All four of you [judges] have made me feel like I could do it. Thank you.”

In addition to the excitement surrounding this newly anointed victor, the live finale featured so many superstar performers, we’re still amazed they fit them all in. Chart-topper Rihanna kicked things off with “Diamonds,” followed by McDermott’s “bring back” performance of “Rock And Roll All Night” with fellow former contestants Rudy Parris, Amanda Brown, Michaela Paige and Bryan Keith. Next up was the very soulful sounds of Motown legend Smokey Robinson and David with a duet of “Cruisin’,” followed by a performance of “Here With You” by The Killers with an assist from Pope.

Really and truly, the hits just kept on coming, with a great blend of lively group numbers that featured all of this season’s contestants, as well as current stars. The show’s “heartbreakers,” Dez Duron, Cody Belew, Julio Cesar, Diego Val and MacKenzie Bourg performed “Stacy’s Mom,” followed by Kelly Clarkson with her song “Catch My Breath” featuring Pope and McDermott. The next “bring back” performance featured a girl power theme courtesy Pope and her gal pals/former contestants Melanie Martinez, Liz Davis and De’Borah, who sang “It’s Time.”

McDermott kept the legendary duets coming with a performance of “Baby I Love Your Way” with industry veteran and Grammy-winner Peter Frampton, which was followed by a little disco dancing to an all-female “Voice” contestant rendition of “Best of my Love.” At this point in the show, the performances were interrupted briefly by a message from “Saint Cee lo Green” who announced that all three contestants were getting new cars!

Friend of MTV Bruno Mars stopped by for a live performance debut of another song off Unorthodox Jukebox, this time with his soulful breakup ballad, “When I Was Your Man.” Mars was followed by David’s “bring back” number “End of the Road” with Trevin Hunte, Amanda Brown and Dez Duron. The would-be pop princess finished off the duets for the evening with her hero Avril Lavigne and they sang Lavigne’s hit, “I’m With You”.

Fittingly, the live performances came to a conclusion with the vocal and musical stylings of all four “Voice” coaches, Green, Christina Aguilera, Shelton and Adam Levine, who sang Green Day’s “Time Of Your Life,” drawing Aguilera and Green’s run on the show to a close.

chris mann the voice winner prediction The Voice 2012 Winner Predictions [Updated]

Monday May 7, 2012        4:25pm EDT

After a season filled with celebrities, suspense, and of course, singing, NBC’s popular TV vocal competition “The Voice” is set to crown a winner on Tuesday’s special two-hour finale.

Tuesday’s season end follows Monday’s final performance episode in which remaining singers Tony Lucca of Team Adam, Chris Mann of Team Christina, Jermaine Paul of Team Blake, and Juliet Simms of Team Cee Lo will each perform a solo number, then sing duets with their respective coaches.

“The Voice” has become one of the United States’ most widely-watched TV singing contests in which a group of four celebrity “coaches” – Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green – first choose contestants, then help them through the weekly singing competition for a live studio audience that is televised around the country.

Weekly, a combination of fan voting and the coach’s decisions decides who stays on the show and who gets booted, but fans vote for Tuesday’s final winner, who receives a recording contract with Universal Republic Records and $100,000 cash.

In a chat with “Voice” social media correspondent Christina Milian on the show’s NBC website, Mann, who has sung opera in Europe and is known for his classical style, said he planned to perform the same song he sang in his audition for the show – a plan he conceived well in advance.

“The whole point of me auditioning for the show was so that I could maybe get on Christina’s team, and if I happened to be the last man standing, I could sing this one song with her,” Mann revealed.

Simms, an indie rock singer and the sole female finalist, said that her final song choice was inspired by fan requests, and that she wanted to give them what they wanted.

Lucca, a former backup singer whose “bromance” with coach Adam Levine helped propel his success, kept his cards close to his vest, saying only that he may be “the proud owner of the wild card.”

Paul, who sang in church choirs before becoming a backup vocalist for Alicia Keys and Mary J. Blige, hinted that his song choice was motivated by his roots, saying he wanted to “bring it on home.”

Audiences voting starts after Monday’s performance episode, and results will be announced on Tuesday in a show featuring a full roster of performances by big-name voices.

After tweeting hints about the finale’s celebrity guests, NBC has announced that Justin Bieber, Flo Rida, Daryl Hall and John Oates (a.k.a. “Hall and Oates”), and Lady Antebellum will all serenade audiences before the winner is announced.

Teen pop sensation Bieber, who stopped by “The Voice” earlier this season to show a video clip of his single “Girlfriend,” will perform the song live this time around.

Hip-hop star Flo Rida will sing two songs, including a medley of his single “Wild Ones.” Hall & Oates, among the best-selling duos ever in music, are slated to perform their first No. 1 single, “Rich Girl.” Country crossover trio Lady Antebellum will sing their song “Wanted You More.”

The coaches will close the season the same way they opened it – with a group performance.

“The Voice”, boosted by a bumper post Super Bowl debut, has proved a stiff ratings challenge this current season to Fox’s aging rival “American Idol”, especially in the coveted 18-49 viewer group where the two shows are in a close race to be the most-watched program this season.

But “Idol” draws many millions more total viewers than “The Voice” – an average 19.2 million audience this season compared to 15.8 million for “The Voice”, according to figures from the two TV networks.

How much does the Fox network disdain the challenge that “The Voice” on NBC has posed to its dominant singing competition, “American Idol”?

Enough to take the essence of the show and make a wholesale copy — only based on dating, not singing.

During the Wednesday edition of “Idol,” Fox announced that it would introduce a show this summer called — with a clear wink — “The Choice.” It will feature celebrities in spinning chairs deciding, in what amounts to a blind audition, which sexy single to go on a date with.

“The Choice” follows the storied tradition of Fox ripping off/having fun with some other network’s successful reality show — and that proud history has always been led by Mike Darnell, the longtime executive in charge of reality at Fox.

Mr. Darnell acknowledged in a telephone interview Wednesday night that he enjoyed this kind of competitive tweaking, “and I’m never going to change.”

He also pointed out, fairly, that he has long played with various formats for dating shows, and he took note that the “spinning chairs” presented a new way to create a kind of blind date setup.

That it might be interpreted as both a mock of and a jab at “The Voice” was not something Mr. Darnell was going to deny, but he also argued that this idea has charms of its own, harking back to the hoariest dating show of them all, “The Dating Game.”

“The chairs work better than a wall,” he said.

In “The Choice,” four celebrities will sit in the chairs and listen to what amounts to an audition from the contestants (they will pitch their backgrounds, likes and dislikes, turn-ons and turn-offs, sort of like the bios of Playboy playmates of old). The celebrity can pull his “love handle” to turn his chair around, when he will get a first look at his potential date. If more than one celebrity spins around, the woman gets to pick the man of her own choice.

But the celebrity will get three selections, who will have to compete in a “speed choice” round, before he picks one he will take on a date.

The format calls for five weeks of male celebrities’ picking women, before switching for one week to female celebrities. (In this case, ABC can take note of the coincidental similarities to its reality show “The Bachelor/Bachelorette.”)

No celebrities have been named yet, though Mr. Darnell said they have all been lined up. “We have sports stars, music stars, reality stars,” he said.

The show will run for five weeks on Fox, Thursdays nights at 9, starting on June 7.
