Nancy Breberg was lost, creeping along on slippery roads in search of a suburban hotel when her SUV slid off the road and down an embankment onto an icy pond. For the next 18 hours, the 67-year-old woman was trapped, praying for help as water seeped over her feet and temperatures plunged into the teens.

Breberg, a diabetic, might not have survived if a passing bicyclist hadn’t spotted her vehicle’s wheel sticking up through brush that made it difficult to see. When he went closer to investigate, he saw someone in a pink jacket moving inside. Then Breberg called out for help.

“She was pretty weak,” bicyclist Geoffrey Racette told The Associated Press on Monday, as Breberg was recovering at a Minneapolis hospital. “She said that she wasn’t able to get out of the car and was stuck in there. She couldn’t crawl out the back.”

Racette crawled through the back window and fed Breberg some Chex Mix he had been carrying on his ride. She pointed him to her bag of medication, which he retrieved and handed over to paramedics who soon arrived.

Breberg’s husband, Ron Breberg, 66, of Centerville, said she was on a breathing tube, sedated and getting fluids Monday as part of the recovery process at Hennepin County Medical Center. But he said doctors don’t think his wife will need skin grafts for her frostbitten feet and she has no broken bones or other serious injuries — she just needs time to heal.

“Things are going in the right direction, but it will take some time,” he said, adding that his wife had improved to serious condition.

Ron Breberg said he was looking forward to getting time to call Racette and thank him for rescuing his wife.

Nancy Breberg was looking for a hotel in St. Louis Park, where she was supposed to attend a dinner about 7:30 Friday night, when her SUV veered off the road, crashed through a fence, went down the embankment and landed on the pond on the driver’s side, according to the police report. The impact broke the ice and allowed some water into the passenger compartment.

Breberg was able to get her seat and shoulder belt off, her husband said, but the water shorted out the vehicle’s electrical system, so she couldn’t open the windows or unlock the doors, and she couldn’t get her legs working well enough to crawl out the broken back window. Her cell phone ended up in the water, where she couldn’t reach it. She had no food but sucked on a piece of ice to get some water, he said.

“She was just hoping and praying that somebody could find her,” Ron Breberg said.

She was conscious and coherent when Racette, 20, of Plymouth, found her just before 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Racette said he was bicycling home from his part-time job in the meat department at a Rainbow Foods grocery store when he spotted the SUV and ran down to the pond.

“I think she was just really happy that somebody finally found her,” Racette said. “She sounded extremely strong for somebody who had been through what she went through.”

Racette said he was fortunate that the pond was shallow where her SUV came to rest.

“The ice was not solid. I fell through pretty quick. It was only about a foot-and-a-half deep so it wasn’t terrible,” Racette said, adding, “my boots are still drying.”

Ron Breberg said he spent a sleepless night after reporting his wife missing to police. He said talked to her briefly Saturday before she was sedated.

“She was so tired. She just wanted to sleep,” he said. “She didn’t sleep at all while she was in the car.”

Edmonton police are seeking witnesses to Wednesday’s fatal hit-and- run that claimed the life of a Good Samaritan who had stopped to help a fellow motorist.

Andrew Green, 46, had stopped to help another motorist on Anthony Henday Drive whose vehicle had broken down. Green was placing alert traffic triangles on the shoulder of the road when a passing vehicle struck him around 11:30 p.m.

Green died instantly and the driver left the scene of the collision.

Green’s mother, Una Green, said she is still in shock about her son’s death and the fact the driver fled the scene.

“That individual that did the accident should not have left the scene,” Green said from Toronto. “He should have turned himself in and [not] run away from the scene. That’s the only thing I think about.”

Charges are pending against the 36-year-old driver allegedly involved in the hit and run who turned himself into police Thursday, accompanied by his lawyer.

Police have since recovered the black 2008 Porsche Cayenne SUV that allegedly hit Green.

Anyone who witnessed the hit-and- run or saw a black Porsche Cayenne SUV driving southbound on Henday or westbound on 62 Avenue on Wednesday night is being asked to come forward and contact police at  780-423-4567 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Green said that her son’s funeral will be held in Toronto, where he grew up.

Each letter of the first name rules 9 years of life.  Ages 27 to 54 are ruled by the sum of the 4th, 5th and 6th letters of the name.

Andrew Green

18 (r is the 18th letter of the alphabet) + 5 (e is the 5th letter of the alphabet) + 23 (w is the 23rd letter of the alphabet) = 46

So the number 46 ruled his ages twenty-seven to fifty-four.

46 = So young.

Authorities say the man accused of driving an SUV into an office building in the nation’s capital has been charged with arson and other counts.

Gwendolyn Crump is a spokeswoman for District of Columbia police. She said in an email Saturday that 32-year-old Charles Morrell Ball of New Market, Md., had also been charged with felony destruction of property and felony unauthorized use of vehicle driver.

Authorities had said previously that they believed the driver intentionally crashed into the office building Friday night. The vehicle had been reported stolen.

The building is less than a mile from the White House in the city’s business district. It has a mix of offices, retail shops and restaurants.

June 2, 2012             8:09 p.m.

A woman on prescription drugs drove in reverse into oncoming traffic for hundreds of yards – at one point exiting the vehicle and allowing her vehicle to continue unoccupied – before a collision with a police cruiser brought her vehicle to a halt just yards from a busy intersection, authorities said.

Marisela Lucero, 43, of Huntington Beach argued with her boyfriend at Harbor Bay Motel, then got behind the wheel of her black Toyota Sequoia and reversed out of the parking lot around 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Then she just kept on going, said Sgt. Brent McKinley of the Costa Mesa Police Department.

“She continued driving in reverse, southbound, in the northbound lane,” McKinley said.

Costa Mesa police Officer M. Cohen spotted her shortly after she left the hotel and pulled ahead of Lucero to block her vehicle, blaring his siren and lights to clear the lanes of other drivers and shouting for her to stop, McKinley said.

But Lucero was “incoherent,” “erratic” and would not respond, McKinley said. Cohen was forced to gun his vehicle ahead of Lucero’s SUV, which was reversing at about 5-10 mph, to try to stop the Sequoia with his police cruiser, McKinley said. In response, Lucero swerved to avoid Cohen’s vehicle, hit the brakes and tried to exit.

But when Lucero got out of the vehicle, the unoccupied Sequoia began to move in reverse again, heading toward the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and 19th Street, McKinley said. Cohen got out of his car and tried to pull Lucero out of the way, but the still-open driver-side door of her SUV knocked both of them to the pavement and damaged the door of Cohen’s police cruiser.

Costa Mesa police Officer N. Brown spotted the unoccupied vehicle and gunned her police cruiser into the path of the runaway Sequoia. The two vehicles collided, stopping just a few yards short of Harbor Boulevard and 19th Street.

“If they hadn’t blocked that vehicle, it would have caused some serious traffic collisions at that intersection,” McKinley said.

Cohen and Brown were uninjured, and Lucero suffered minor scrapes on her hands, McKinley said. The only vehicles or property that suffered any damage were Lucero’s vehicle and the two police cruisers. No bystanders were harmed.

Lucero was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and is being held in lieu of $2,500 bail.

The father of the man who opened fire and killed five people across Seattle and later killed himself after a citywide manhunt, says his son was a very private person who was “disgruntled” and had been a frequent customer of the coffee shop where his rampage began.

“He was happy sometimes, but not really. He was kind of disgruntled,” Walt Stawicki said about his son Ian Stawicki, who fatally shot himself after a killing spree Wednesday.

Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center confirmed that Ian Stawicki, who according to his father, was unmarried with no children and had recently worked on a fish processing boat in Alaska, died at 6 p.m. local time Wednesday.

After the shootings began at approximately 11 a.m. when Stawicki opened fire at Cafe Racer Espresso in Seattle’s University District, eventually killing four people, he killed a fifth random woman in a subsequent confrontation and stole her car.

Two victims died at the scene at Cafe Racer Espresso, while two more died later at Harborview Medical Center. People who were brought to the hospital had suffered gunshot wounds to the head, according to Susan Gregg, a hospital spokeswoman.

According to the Seattle Times, two of the victims at the cafe were Joe “Vito” Albanese, 52, who was killed along with best friend Drew Keriakedes, 45; the two men were in a band called God’s Favorite Beefcake. The two other victims shot at the cafe have not yet been identified.

The Seattle Times reports that the only survivor of today’s shootings is Leonard Meuse, who is currently out of surgery at Harborview Medical Center after he was shot in the jaw and the armpit. Meuse is expected to survive.

Although it’s not known what prompted the cafe shooting, Ian’s brother, Andrew Stawicki, said that his girlfriend said Ian was acting “kind of crazy” Wednesday morning, and she would not let him have the car.

Ian apparently had his mother’s pickup truck on Wednesday; the family currently does not know where the vehicle is.

The late Wednesday morning shooting set off a massive manhunt throughout Seattle. Earlier in the day, Seattle police had tweeted that the suspect “is still alive and receiving treatment at Harborview Medical Center.”

The second shooting incident occurred in downtown Seattle, about a 15-minute drive from the cafe.

“It appears that about 30 minutes after the shooting at the cafe, the suspect in the cafe shooting fled to First Hill, where he fatally shot a woman in a parking lot, and stole her SUV,” police wrote in a blog post on the shootings.

Ian Stawicki did not know married mother of two Gloria Leonidas, the woman he killed in the second shooting incident, according to his father. Koch reportedly died at Harborview Medical Center.

The area where the suspect shot himself was about seven miles southwest of downtown Seattle — about a mile to a mile and a half from where the suspect’s stolen black SUV was found abandoned with a gun on the seat, according to police.

During a search of the area, a detective spotted the suspect on the street and started watching him, police said. When backup officers arrived and started moving toward the man, he turned to the officers and the officers ordered him to drop his weapon.

Instead, the suspect put a firearm to his head and pulled the trigger, firing one shot, and immediately dropped to the ground.
