Special Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement identified and arrested two suspects in a child pornography cases less than 24 hours after releasing photos of the alleged abusers to get the public’s help in finding them.

Federal agents and officers of the Los Angeles Police Department took Letha Mae Montemayor, 52, into custody on Thursday night after identifying her by both her facial appearance and her tattoos, which were present in the photographs depicting alleged child abuse. Montemayor was arrested hours after ICE placed photos of “Jane Doe” on line.

ICE officials say the incriminating photos of the suspect had been widely circulated and are believed to have been taken approximately 11 years ago. According to court records, the photos depict the suspect and an unidentified male allegedly abusing a young girl believed by authorities to be about 13 years old.

The images first surfaced in a 2007 investigation by ICE agents in Chicago, but agents had run out of leads to identify the alleged perpetrators and their victim before asking for the public’s help.

On Friday afternoon, 43-year-old Lance Robert Fries of Tucson, was taken into custody at his attorney’s Arizona office by special agents with ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Fries faces potential federal charges of production of child pornography and is expected to make his initial appearance in federal court today.

His arrest came after HSI released photographs Thursday of an unidentified man sought in connection with a child pornography case that involved the sexual exploitation of a pre-pubescent boy by an adult male. The images were first discovered in 2006. Just after 11:15 p.m. Thursday, special agents received a call to the ICE tipline regarding the suspect’s possible identity.

At 11:15 p.m. Thursday, HSI special agents received a call to the ICE Tip Line regarding the suspect’s possible identity.

Investigators were also able to identify the victim and confirm that the boy is now safe.

“This is truly a remarkable turn of events and it again demonstrates the collective power that can be brought to bear when law enforcement and the public team up to combat the sexual exploitation of children,” said ICE Director John Morton. “Those who produce and trade child pornography over the Internet believe they’re protected by the anonymity of cyberspace. Through our collective efforts, we’re proving these predators wrong and gaining justice for their innocent victims.”

ICE is still seeking help in identifying two additional John Does suspected of sexually abusing young children. Those suspects, whose photos were also released Thursday, are still at large.

In December, less than 24 hours after asking for the public’s help in identifying and arresting another “Jane Doe” suspected of producing child pornography, federal officials arrested a suspect and rescued a child who was allegedly shown in an exploitative video.

Corrine Danielle Motley of Okaloosa County, Florida faces federal charges for the production and distribution of child pornography. Motley, 25, was arrested on Dec. 19 by Northwest Florida Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force members and Homeland Security Investigations special agents.

The Los Angeles County coroner’s office has identified one of three people killed when a BMW crashed into a Studio City pizzeria early Sunday and severed a gas line, igniting a fire that gutted the car.

Jason Shmelnik of Los Angeles and the two other victims, whom the coroner’s office have not yet identified, were declared dead at the scene. Authorities said the driver of the BMW had lost control of the car and struck at least one tree before barreling into Reno’s Pizzeria about 3:30 a.m.

“It got really hot here. The TV is melted over there. That’s how hot it got, because of the blast,” Yarvand Tsaturyan, whose father owns the pizzeria, told KCBS (Channel 2).

A friend of Shmelnik told KTLA that the trio had been at a birthday party at a nearby Russian restaurant, where he said the driver had been drinking.

“I saw that he was too drunk to drive, and something inside me said … ‘He’s an adult. He’ll get there,’ ” said Alexander Polansky, who added that he now felt “a lot of guilt.”

Identification cards recovered from the scene indicate that two of the people in the car were male, said Sgt. Kurt Smith of the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division.

“When the car immolates like that, identification and stuff like that are iffy,” he said.

Los Angeles County prosecutors charged a drifter from Florida with multiple counts of attempted murder Monday in connection with the stabbings of three Los Angeles-area homeless people in which the assailant attacked them while they slept and left behind rambling “death warrants.”

Courtney Anthony Robinson, 38, faces three counts of attempted murder, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. If convicted on all counts, he faces life in prison.

Robinson, who turned himself in to authorities Friday night, is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at the downtown Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

The arrest came a day after authorities asked for the public’s help in tracking down Robinson, who at the time was described as a “person of interest” in several non-fatal attacks on middle-aged homeless people who had been stabbed in the back.

The first attack was reported July 3 when a 56-year-old man was found bleeding, with a large “hunting type” knife protruding from his back, near 3rd and Main streets in downtown Los Angeles, according to law enforcement sources. The man crawled 100 yards seeking help, with the weapon lodged between his shoulder blades, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case is ongoing.

Last Tuesday, another man was stabbed in a similar manner as he slept on a Santa Monica bus bench near the Third Street Promenade, officials said. Police Sgt. Richard Lewis confirmed that a similar note was found by detectives, but he did not give details.

On Thursday, a 54-year-old woman was stabbed as she slept near La Brea and De Longpre avenues, blocks from Hollywood High School, authorities said. Police said they recovered a black kitchen knife and another “warrant.”

LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said Robinson, who signed his “death warrants” as David Ben Keyes, targeted the victims “for specific reason.” But detectives “don’t want me to discuss what that particular reason was,” Smith said at a weekend news conference.

Smith said Robinson also is believed to be responsible for two knife attacks in Santa Barbara.

July 19, 2012                    9:22 p.m.

The Los Angeles Police Department took the unusual step Thursday of urging homeless people to get off the street and seek shelter at night after three transients were stabbed while they slept by an assailant who left behind rambling “death warrants.”

Detectives said the attacks, none fatal, all occurred this month and involved middle-aged homeless people who were stabbed in the back. The attacker left signed pieces of paper that he labeled “death warrants” at the scene of each crime.

Police released a photo of a man whom they described as a “person of interest.” David Ben Keyes, who has been missing for weeks from the Santa Barbara area, is being sought for questioning by detectives in the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division and the Santa Monica Police Department. Officials said Keyes’ name appears on all three notes but would not provide details about their contents.

LAPD Capt. Billy Hayes publicly urged homeless people to find nighttime shelter or at least stay in groups until a suspect is caught.

“With numbers, there is safety,” Hayes said at a news conference.

LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith added: “Get somewhere where you can be protected. Please do what you can to get into a shelter and be safe.”

The first attack was reported July 3 when a 56-year-old man was found bleeding with a large “hunting type” knife protruding from his back near 3rd and Main streets in downtown Los Angeles, according to law enforcement sources. The man crawled 100 yards looking for help while the weapon was lodged between his shoulder blades, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case was ongoing.

On Tuesday, another man was stabbed in a similar manner as he slept on a Santa Monica bus bench near the Third Street Promenade. Police Sgt. Richard Lewis confirmed that a similar note was found by detectives but did not give details.

On Thursday, a 54-year-old woman was stabbed as she slept near La Brea and De Longpre avenues, blocks from Hollywood High School. Police recovered a black kitchen knife and another “warrant.”

On various websites, Keyes describes himself as “a musician, and writer of original psalms, proverbs, love letters, poems and riddles for the Roman Catholic Church and Jewish Synagogues.”

But LAPD officials stressed it’s far from clear that Keyes committed the crimes, adding that it’s possible someone else was using his name.

Police have alerted various social service agencies and plan to increase patrols Thursday night. Officers will also be urging homeless people they come across to seek shelter.

Hayes said that police have no motive for the attacks but that there is evidence the same person is responsible for all three.

The notes were typewritten and signed and contained rambling commentaries, officials said.

“It appears there is a common thread, but we cannot get into specifics,” Hayes said.

Los Angeles police Tuesday released surveillance video of two suspects wanted in connection with the slaying of a 38-year-old man in Van Nuys.

Raul Lopez was shot Friday outside the business where he worked on Ventura Boulevard, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Four men entered the business and an argument broke out between them and Lopez. He picked up a chair and moved the men outside, according to the LAPD.

One of the man fired a handgun at Lopez, who was hit in the torso. He died later at a hospital.

The surveillance footage shows two of the suspects entering the business.

Anyone with information is asked to call homicide detectives at (818) 374-0040.

June 28, 2012                4:37 pm

After midnight on a quiet street in a posh Los Angeles neighborhood, one of the music world’s rising stars was punching his pop singer girlfriend in the face and slamming her head against the dashboard of a rented Lamborghini. Ninety-five minutes later, a rookie police officer picked up the phone across town and called TMZ.com.

The gossip site went on to post a picture, leaked from police evidence, showing the battered face of the victim, Rihanna. LAPD officials vowed an immediate investigation to get to the bottom of the embarrassing breach.

This spring, after three years, numerous search warrants and forensic exams of computer hard drives, phones and e-mail accounts, Los Angeles prosecutors quietly abandoned an attempt to bring criminal charges against officers in the leak.

The decision, made in March and detailed in a report recently obtained by the Los Angeles Times, came despite a finding by LAPD officials that an award-winning patrol officer was involved in the sale of the picture.

The department has moved to fire that officer and the rookie who called TMZ.

The district attorney’s office cited a lack of evidence showing TMZ paid the officers as an obstacle to charging them. In the aftermath of the leak, there was widespread speculation in the media that the website had paid a premium for the exclusive image in an explosive story making international headlines. One report, noted by investigators, put the price tag on the photo at $62,000. But searches of the officers’ bank accounts turned up no evidence of a payment.

A spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office said investigators could not rule out the possibility that payments to the officers were funneled through others, but they were limited in how far afield they could search.

“You can’t go on a fishing expedition and subpoena everybody who might be related or a friend,” said spokeswoman Jane Robison.

An attorney for Blanca Lopez, 28, the officer who phoned TMZ, declined to comment. A lawyer for the second officer, Rebecca Reyes, 39, denied selling the photo. Both women are to appear before LAPD disciplinary panels in August, where the department will argue that they should lose their jobs.

Singer Chris Brown was arrested on suspicion of beating Robyn Rihanna Fenty on Feb. 8, 2009. The high-profile investigation, involving two of the industry’s biggest young talents on the eve of the Grammy Awards, was headquartered at the Wilshire station, where Reyes was assigned. She was a field training officer for new members of the force and had received an award for her volunteer work with youths.

It is unclear whether she had any role in Brown’s case, but photos of Rihanna’s injuries were left stacked on a desk where anyone in uniform in the station could see, according to the district attorney’s report. Reyes acknowledged to investigators that she used her cell phone to take a picture of the top photo in the stack -– the shot posted by TMZ.

She took the picture in the hours after the assault, according to the prosecutor’s report, but precisely when is unknown. The beating occurred at about 12:40 a.m. Less than an hour later, at 1:23 a.m., Reyes called Lopez, who was assigned to another station. The two shared an East L.A. home, and phone records reviewed by investigators indicated a close relationship with more than 300 calls that month alone.

Lopez subsequently called directory assistance twice and then at 2:08 a.m. called Fox Television, which carries TMZ’s broadcast, according to the report. After making three calls to Fox in quick succession, Lopez phoned TMZ directly at 2:15 a.m. She called back three more times, making the final call at 2:35 a.m., the report states.

TMZ did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Word spread that Reyes had the photo on her phone. She told a niece and at least four colleagues other than Lopez. On Feb. 13, she forwarded the picture to two officers and her personal e-mail account.

The image surfaced on TMZ six days later.

Police officials were livid -– and immediately opened an internal investigation. With then-Chief William Bratton demanding answers, commanders attended roll calls at Wilshire division to urge officers to come forward with information. Reyes sat silently in one of the meetings, according to the report. Suspicion fell on her when a search of the station’s computers showed she had sent the image from her phone to her LAPD e-mail account.

Investigators obtained search warrants to review the woman’s phone and financial records, home, computers, and Lopez’s locker at work, but found no conclusive evidence. Reyes’ Yahoo e-mail account was accessed repeatedly from different computers in the two days before the photo appeared on TMZ and again the day the image was published, but the information gathered “did not reveal whether the image was opened, downloaded, or printed,” according to the report.

Lopez did not speak with investigators, but Reyes gave a statement, admitting to taking the photo. Her attorney, Ira Salzman, said the LAPD’s internal probe, which has a lower standard for proof, concluded that Reyes sold the picture. He conceded that she showed “poor judgment,” but insisted that she never profited from it. He refused to detail what she and Lopez talked about on the phone before the calls to TMZ.

The officers were placed on paid leave for more than two years and later relieved of duty without pay while the investigation dragged on. By the time the inquiry was completed, Brown had already pleaded guilty and was in the third year of a 5-year probation sentence. Asked about the unusually slow pace, the district attorney’s spokesperson pointed to a lengthy back-and-forth between the LAPD’s investigators and the deputy district attorney assigned to the case over what evidence the police should gather.

District attorney’s office spokeswoman Robison said police didn’t turn their initial findings over to a prosecutor until June 2010 — more than a year after the leak. After reviewing the file, Deputy Dist. Atty. Amy Pellman Pentz asked police to reinvestigate certain aspects of the case. Robison declined to say what information the prosecutor found lacking, but a year after police first presented her the case, Pentz was still seeking more information. The police brought the case back to her in November and by March, she had concluded there still wasn’t enough evidence.

In addition to the lack of a money trail, there was no direct evidence that the officers provided the photo to the tabloid, and other officers had access to it.

“Although both Reyes’ and Lopez’s actions are suspicious, they are insufficient to support a criminal prosecution,” Pentz wrote.

Three other officers, including the two who received the photo from Reyes, have been disciplined by the LAPD, a police spokesperson said.

A publicist for Rihanna did not immediately return a message seeking comment. Donald Etra, the lawyer who represented her in connection with the domestic violence case, said he considered the decision “an internal matter” for law enforcement. He added: “A victim’s privacy should be protected.”

The leak’s legacy is complicated. It violated a victim’s privacy and cast doubt on the integrity of the Police Department. But at the same time, it conveyed the ugly reality of domestic violence.

Patricia Giggans, executive director of Peace Over Violence, a domestic violence prevention group, said that in school forums immediately after Brown’s arrest, many teenagers were skeptical of the charges.

“The girls in particular didn’t believe it … and were mad at Rihanna. Like she’s telling a lie and he would never do that,” Giggans recalled. After the photo was leaked, she said, “it was like a wake-up call for a lot of kids.”

Los Angeles police have charged a reputed teenage gang member with murder, accusing him of firing into a crowd in Watts earlier this month, killing a 1-year-old boy while his father cradled him in his arms, authorities said Thursday.

The 15-year-old boy, identified as Donald Ray Dokins, is a suspected Fudgetown Mafia Crip gang member. Prosecutors charged Dokins as an adult with one count each of first degree murder and attempted murder.

Dokins was taken into custody Wednesday after LAPD detectives obtained information linking him to the June 4 shooting that killed Angel Mauro Cortez Nava and wounded his father, Mauro Cortez, according to court documents and law enforcement sources familiar with the case.

Dokins was identified as a suspect within days of Angel’s death, according to the June 13 search warrant affidavit.

In addition to that slaying, the teen is believed to be “a suspect in previous murders,” according to the court papers. LAPD Criminal-Gang Homicide detectives did not elaborate in the affidavit on details of those crimes or possible victims.

Detectives describe Dokins as a member of a clique within the Fudgetown gang call T.Funk Ridaz, which communicated through Facebook, the search warrant states. One of the electronic photos gleaned from the suspect’s Facebook page shows him wearing a hat with the T.Funk Ridaz moniker. Another shows him throwing gang signs.

The shooting sparked outrage in South Los Angeles, and political and civic leaders offered $100,000 in reward money.

The boy’s father, Mauro Cortez, and several other people in their extended family were gathered around a car outside their home in the 10500 block of Hickory Street. As the group was talking, an assailant wearing a gray shirt rode by on a bicycle and fired multiple times into the crowd.

A bullet hit the little boy in the stomach as he was cradled by Cortez, who was hit in the left shoulder, according the court documents. A short time before the shooting, Cortez been wearing a purple shirt, the color identified with the neighborhood gang, Barrio Grape Street, who are rivals with the Fudgetown Mafia Crip gang.

But LAPD officials were adament that Cortez is not a gang member and believe the shirt did not play a direct role in the shooting.

Friends and family said Cortez, the baby’s father, is an immigrant from Jalisco, Mexico, who did odd jobs. He was living with a family on the street who took him in three years ago as their adopted son.

Twenty-six-year-old Brian Corder is a former U.S. Marine who stands accused of attempted murder and conspiracy.

The victim: Corder’s pregnant wife, who shared an apartment with him on the 8600 block of De Soto Avenue in Northridge. The victim, who is four months along, was savagely beaten, but she and the unborn child are expected to make a full recovery.

“Thank god she survived, she is a very, very tough lady,” said Los Angeles Police Det. Chris Casey.

It happened at 12:40 a.m. on June 16. Investigators say Corder conspired to kill his wife with his girlfriend, 19-year-old Fredericka Carmouche of Sherman Oaks, along with their friend, 21-year-old Stephon Crutchfield of Pasadena.

Investigators would not say what kinds of weapons were used in the attack. Initially, detectives thought the victim had been sexually assaulted, but they said it didn’t take long for the truth to emerge.

“These investigators are very talented, and things weren’t adding up right, and they pursued the leads and evidence which compiled together to get the right three people,” said Casey.

Corder, Carmouche and Crutchfield have all been charged with conspiracy and attempted murder. They are behind bars with bail set at $1 million each. Corder’s wife remains at an undisclosed hospital in stable condition.

Taylor and Michael Hale were less than a mile from the hospital, but baby Chloe couldn’t wait: The new mom delivered her own baby in the car on the way to the Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, Ariz.

In the time it took her husband to call 911 from the car, Taylor Hale had delivered the baby.

“The baby’s out!” she exclaimed as her husband spoke to the 911 operator.

She estimated less than five minutes had passed between the time she left her house and when she gave birth.

“I said to the dispatch, ‘The head’s out,’ and he said, ‘Pull over,’”  Michael Hale told ABC News affiliate KNXV-TV. “In the time it took for me to stop and pull over, I look over and my wife is holding our baby.”

“I was in the front seat and I just put my legs up and I pushed her out while we were driving,” Taylor Hale said.

After a few long seconds of silence, the parents were relieved to hear their baby crying.

“Congratulations, dad,” the operator said.

Susan Gordon, public relations director at Banner Gateway Medical Center, said that both mother and daughter are healthy and doing fine.

A Saudi man has been beheaded on charges of sorcery and witchcraft, the state news agency SPA says.

The man, Muree bin Ali bin Issa al-Asiri, was found in possession of books and talismans, SPA said. He had also admitted adultery with two women, it said.

The execution took place in the southern Najran province, SPA reported.

Human rights groups have repeatedly condemned executions for witchcraft in Saudi Arabia.

Last year, there were reports of at least two people being executed for sorcery.

Mr Asiri was beheaded after his sentence was upheld by the country’s highest courts, the Saudi news agency website said.

No details were given of what he was found guilty of beyond the charges of witchcraft and sorcery.

Amnesty International says the country does not formally classify sorcery as a capital offence.

But the BBC’s Arab Affairs Editor, Sebastian Usher, says there is a very strong prohibition of some practices from the country’s powerful conservative religious leaders.

Some, he explains, have repeatedly called for the strongest possible punishments against anyone suspected of sorcery – whether they are fortune tellers or faith healers.

In 2010, a Lebanese television presenter of a popular fortune-telling programme was arrested while on pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

Though sentenced to death, after pressure from his government and human rights groups, he was freed by the Saudi Supreme Court, which found that he had not harmed anyone.

More recent cases of death on charges of sorcery include that of a Saudi woman, executed for committing sorcery and witchcraft in December, in the northern province of Jawf, and that of a Sudanese man executed in September, despite calls led by Amnesty International for his release.

Linda Lefkowitz was reported missing, the LAPD said.

June 19, 2012               7:39 am

A 71-year-old L.A. County Superior Court judge was found safe several hours after she was reported missing from her Pacific Palisades home, officials said Tuesday.

Los Angeles police say Linda Kay Lefkowitz, a judge at the Santa Monica courthouse, was located around 11:30 p.m. Monday in Carson in good health.

Lefkowitz called police and told them she was lost, according to KTLA News. Prior to the call, Lefkowitz was last seen around 8:30 a.m. Monday at her home.

The station reports the judge’s family became concerned when she didn’t return home as usual after work and could not be contacted. Lefkowitz’s daughter, Terri Chapman, told KTLA her mother had been undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with breast cancer and that she seemed scattered on Sunday.

Lefkowitz told police she was not suffering from dementia or any other age-related disease, according to KTLA. She said she stopped to call for help rather than driving through what she called “a bad part of town,” KTLA reported.

Rodney King was found at the bottom of his swimming pool at his home in Rialto early Sunday, authorities said.

King’s fiancé called 911 about 5:25 a.m. and said she found King at the bottom of his pool, Sgt. Paul Stella told The Times. Officers pulled him from the pool and began CPR until paramedics arrived and took King to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton.

King was pronounced dead at the hospital at 6:11 a.m., Stella said.

Preliminary information indicated King drowned and there were no immediate signs of foul play, Stella said.

An autopsy will be conducted.

King was drunk and unarmed when he was pulled over in 1991 for speeding by Los Angeles Police Department officers, who responded to his erratic behavior by kicking him and striking him dozens of times with their batons.

The incident was captured on video by a civilian bystander, and the recording became an instant international sensation.

Four of the officers were tried for excessive force. Their acquittal on April 29, 1992, touched off one of the worst urban riots in U.S. history.

King became a symbol for police brutality and troubled relations between the LAPD and minority residents. He was eventually awarded a $3.8-million settlement. But the money and the fame brought him little solace. He had repeated run-ins with the law and as of April said he was broke. He wrote a book this year recounting his struggles.

King said he was scarred by the beating.

“It felt like I was an inch from death,” he says, describing what it was like to be struck by batons and stung by Tasers.

A jury acquitted four police officers in the beating of King, unleashing an onslaught of pent-up anger in parts of the community. There were 54 riot-related deaths and nearly $1 billion in property damage as the seams of the city blew apart.

In an interview with The Times this year, King confided that he was at peace with what happened to him.

“I would change a few things, but not that much,” he says. “Yes, I would go through that night, yes I would. I said once that I wouldn’t, but that’s not true. It changed things. It made the world a better place.”

What emerges from both the book and the man is the picture of someone who has spent two decades coping, not always well, with the blows that police inflicted on the night of March 3, 1991, and with the notoriety that came later.

June 6, 2012           6:35 am

Hours after Los Angeles police and city officials announced a $50,000 reward for information in the fatal shooting of a 1-year-old boy, the Los Angeles Kings matched the donation, bringing the total money offered to $100,000.

Police are still asking for the public’s help in tracking down the suspect who shot and killed Angel Mauro Cortez-Nava on Monday night as his father cradled the baby in his arms outside a Watts home.

The baby’s slaying follows a period of violence between two warring gangs, and detectives say the slaying appears to be related. Although the victim’s father was not a gang member, he may have been mistaken for one because he was wearing a purple T-shirt, witnesses and area residents said.

On Tuesday, Police Chief Charlie Beck called the boy’s death “an awful tragedy.”

“Gang violence touches everybody,” Beck said. “People have to understand that even though gangs may target each other, victims cross a wide, broad swath.”

The shooting occurred about 7:50 p.m. Monday on the sidewalk near 105th and Hickory streets. The victim’s father, Mauro Cortez, had just donned a purple T-shirt a friend had given him.

“I own a Honda,” the shirt said. “Be nice to me.”

But as Cortez’s extended family congregated outside the home, his stepfather and stepbrothers urged the 21-year-old construction worker to remove the shirt, witnesses said. Purple had become a dangerous color since last summer, when the area experienced a number of shootings involving a black gang known as Fudgetown and a rival Latino gang called Barrio Grape Street, which uses the color purple.

An immigrant from rural Mexico, Cortez “didn’t know nothing about people killing each other over the color purple,” said Luis Ramos, a friend. “He barely speaks English.”

Witnesses say Cortez was still wearing the shirt and holding his son when a black youth in a dark hoodie rode up to the group on a bicycle, fired a gun into the crowd and pedaled off. The bullet pierced the toddler’s back and struck Cortez in the upper body. The boy died later that night at a hospital after emergency surgery, according to authorities.

At an afternoon news conference, Mauro Cortez spoke briefly to reporters in Spanish, then left the podium in tears.

Deputy Police Chief Pat Gannon held a photo of the child, whom he called “this beautiful little Angel,” and said the city was offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the killer’s capture. Timothy Leiweke, president of AEG, which owns the Los Angeles Kings, later offered the additional $50,000.

“During such an exciting time such as this we can’t lose sight of the importance and responsibility we all share in keeping our community safe,” Leiweke said in a statement posted online. “Our players and staff feel a tremendous obligation to do everything we can to help find who committed this terrible act of irresponsibility and hopefully this can contribute to the effort to acquire the information necessary to find who did this and make sure everyone knows this is unacceptable in our city.”

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact LAPD gang homicide detectives at (213) 485-4175.

LAPD Officer's Mother Shot Dead in South L.A.

June 4, 2012                6:02 am

Detectives are continuing to investigate the death of an LAPD officer’s mother, who was found slain in her South Los Angeles home Sunday morning.

The officer dropped his mother off at her home, located in the 1600 block of West 66th Street, Saturday night and called her Sunday morning but got no response, according to the LAPD. The officer, who has not been identified, went to his mother’s home Sunday about noon to check on her welfare and found her body.

The woman was identified as 79-year-old Cleo Hughes, said Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. An autopsy will likely occur Monday, MacWillie said.

No arrests have been made in the case, police said Monday morning.

Los Angeles homicide detectives investigating the slaying of a popular Palms chiropractor are looking into whether he may have been followed before the Thursday morning attack.

Robert Rainey, 54, was found by a patient about 8 a.m. in the lobby of his office in a strip mall in the 9200 block of Venice Boulevard.

Authorities said Rainey may have been followed into work earlier that morning. Rainey was an avid long-distance runner, about 6 feet 2 inches tall and physically fit. Police are examining the possibility that the suspect caught him by surprise.

They plan to examine surveillance video that may help with the identification of a suspect.

Rainey, who is the brother of Times media writer James Rainey, suffered apparent blunt-force trauma to the head. He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead shortly after being transported.

LAPD Lt. John Radtke said there was no obvious motive and that the chiropractor was well-liked by his employees and the community.

Anyone with information is asked to call West Bureau homicide detectives at (213) 382-9470.

Big wheels keep on turning.

Gus Martinez, a veteran LAPD officer, is attempting to break the world record for the longest Ferris wheel ride. The Carson resident boarded the Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica Pier early Thursday morning and, if successful, he will step off Friday morning, 25 hours later.

“It’s a very smooth ride. It’s enjoyable so far,” a cheerful Martinez said by phone four hours into his effort.

The record attempt is sponsored by a partnership between Pacific Park and the Special Olympics to help raise money for the athletic program for persons with disabilities.

Officials said Martinez was a natural choice. His son, Jason, is a Special Olympics athlete with Down syndrome and Martinez coaches several of the organization’s sport teams.

Prospective Ferris wheel record-breakers must follow strict guidelines established by Guinness World Records. Martinez cannot sleep and he’s allowed only a five-minute bathroom break for every hour he’s on the Ferris wheel. However, he can accumulate the time to take a longer break.

The current record of 24 hours, 30 minutes was set in Dublin, Ireland, in October.

But Martinez came prepared for the adventure.

“I’ve got snacks and energy drinks to keep me up,” he said, adding that his long shifts as a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department have helped prepare him for the challenge.

Park officials have made several accommodations to give Martinez a more comfortable ride. They installed special seating with additional padding, and attached a solar panel so that he has electricity to power his flat-screen TV, iPad and cellphone.

One thing the Guinness World Records folks do allow is visitors. So far, his wife and some coworkers have joined him for part of the ride, said Jeff Klocke, a spokesman for Pacific Park.

“Boredom is the biggest issue, not going ’round and ’round,” he said.

Other riders are welcome to join and visit Martinez throughout the day. Parkgoers can ride the Ferris wheel from 8 p.m. to midnight for $5. Fares will be donated to Special Olympics Southern California.

May 30, 2012, 5:00 a.m.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum field is the place where the USC Trojans play football, two Summer Olympics were staged, John F. Kennedy accepted the Democratic presidential nomination and Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass.It was also a location for “The Gangbang Girl #32,” a hard-core pornographic movie that featured 40 minutes of group sex on the gridiron turf, The Times has learned.

The filming at the taxpayer-owned stadium was done at night, with the Coliseum‘s towering lights blazing and its rows of distinctive red and white seats framing many of the scenes. The video also shows the stadium’s signature tunnel, which the Trojan team charges through at the start of games, as well as a sliver of the iconic peristyle, the arched entrance to the Coliseum.

“I was just in awe that we were at the Coliseum,” said a star of the film, who goes by the name Mr. Marcus. “I’ve made movies for about 20 years and I’ve done a lot of things, but that one really stands out.… I mean, who gets to have sex on the Coliseum floor?”

Marcus said the football-themed footage was shot on a single night, including some non-explicit scenes filmed in a Coliseum locker room that did not make the final cut. The Coliseum is not identified by name in the video, which was made in 2001 and released in 2002. About half of the 90-minute movie was filmed elsewhere.

How the crew got permission to use the national historic landmark — which was built as a memorial to World War I veterans — is unclear. Attempts to reach a representative of the production company, Anabolic Video, were unsuccessful.

The Coliseum is jointly run by the city, county and state, which owns the land. A spokesman for the California attorney general’s office said Tuesday that he did not know if it is illegal to film pornography on state property. Agencies such as the California Department of Parks and Recreation prohibit porn shoots on properties they control.

Gaining access to the locked stadium and firing up the field lights typically requires the approval of a high-ranking manager, according to people familiar with Coliseum operations, who requested anonymity because they are not allowed to speak publicly on the matter.

An attorney for the top Coliseum executive at the time the video was made said his client knew nothing about the production.

Former General Manager Patrick Lynch resigned in early 2011 and was indicted in March of this year in a sweeping corruption case.

“That’s disgusting,” Lynch’s attorney, Tony Capozzola, said of the porn shoot. “He would never allow that.”

Lynch has pleaded guilty to conflict of interest in a deal that required him to return $385,000 in alleged kickbacks he received from a Coliseum contractor. Ex-events manager Todd DeStefano has pleaded not guilty to charges that include bribery, embezzlement and conspiracy. Four other men also have been indicted in the case.

The indictments followed more than a year of Times reports on Coliseum financial irregularities and lax oversight by its nine-member governing commission, which includes four elected officials. Managers were engaged in side deals with concert promoters and others who did business at the Coliseum. Executives spent tens of thousands of dollars in public funds on massages, golf tournaments, luxury cars and other perks.

The commission is now at the brink of insolvency and voted May 14 to surrender control of the stadium and companion Sports Arena to USC.

Some current commissioners, including county Supervisors Zev Yaroslavsky and Mark Ridley-Thomas, were on the panel when the film was shot.

Yaroslavsky and Ridley-Thomas declined requests for an interview late Tuesday.

The plot of the movie, to the extent that it has one, revolves around a football team and a cheerleader.

The Anabolic logo is emblazoned on the jerseys the dozen or so performers wear — Marcus kept his as a souvenir — and on banners draped like bunting along the stands.

Marcus is a repeat winner of the annual Adult Video News Award, has been inducted into the X-Rated Critics Organization’s Adult Movie Hall of Fame and wrote the 2010 book “The Porn Star Guide to Great Sex” (St. Martin’s Press), which earns a three-star review on the Barnes & Noble website.

Before he joins in the film’s raunchier scenes, Marcus is depicted as a quarterback tossing warmup passes near the western end zone. He told The Times he remembered the movie was shot on a cool night starting about 7.”We were probably there until 11 p.m.,” he said.

The movie’s credits say it was produced on Sept. 16, 2001, a Sunday, during USC’s football season. The Trojans played at the Coliseum the weekend before and two weeks later.

Sitting in the warehouse-like office of his Van Nuys-based apparel company, Daddy Inc., Marcus recalled that a clearly marked Sheriff’s Department helicopter startled the cast when it appeared overhead in mid-shoot. The whop-whop of a chopper’s blades is heard in the movie.

Marcus said he remembered looking up and thinking: “There’s going to be, like, this intercom saying, ‘Hey, this is the … Sheriff’s Department, you guys must cease.’

“But none of that came. They just circled, like they were trying to see what was going on.”

Spokesmen for the Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles Police Department, which has jurisdiction over the Coliseum, said they had no information about any 2001 pornography shoot there.

Marcus said the fact that the filming continued after the helicopter left convinced him that Anabolic must have had an official go-ahead to use the stadium.

“Honestly, when I started to shoot there, I thought, ‘How the hell did we pull this off? And does everyone know about it?'”

The performer had no apologies for people who might be angry that the movie may have tarnished the Coliseum.

“You can be mad all you want, but it was one of those once-in-a-lifetime types of opportunities,” he said.

Police said two males in their late teens or early 20s approached Walker and the other man and struck up a brief conversation. “One of the suspects took out a handgun and shot Walker and the second victim,” according to an LAPD news release.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at the Criminal Gang and Homicide Division at (213) 485-1383. Those wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at  (800) 222-TIPS  (  [800] 222-8477 ).

Police have identified the 19-year-old bicyclist struck by an SUV and fatally shot in a brazen midday attack in Koreatown on Saturday that left another cyclist wounded.

Shaoyan Almazan, of Los Angeles, was riding his bicycle with an unidentified friend about 1:20 p.m. when he was hit by the white SUV at the intersection of San Moreno Avenue and South New Hampshire Street, said Los Angeles police officer Karen Rayner.

A male passenger got out of the SUV and shot Almazan several times as he lay on the ground, Rayner said. The second cyclist was struck in the hand as he began to ride away.

He stopped to call 911 in the 800 block of Vermont Avenue, Rayner said. Medics later took him to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Almazan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives are still trying to determine a motive for the attack, Rayner said, and are looking for three men believed to be in the SUV. Witnesses said the shooter, described as a man of “medium height and weight,” was wearing a hooded sweat shirt.

Investigators ask anyone with information about the incident to call Det. Mark Morgan at  (213) 382-9470  or (877) LAPD-24-7. Anonymous tips can also be called in to Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

Shell casings and signals from one of the victim’s cellphones led police to arrest two men in the slayings of two USC graduate students from China — a botched robbery that focused a harsh global spotlight on the campus that is a magnet for foreigners.

At a news conference Friday evening, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck identified the suspects as Bryan Barnes, 20, of Los Angeles and Javier Bolden, 19.

Barnes was taken into custody Friday afternoon by a team of LAPD SWAT officers, along with FBI and other federal agents, who raided an apartment near the USC campus.

Bolden was arrested three hours later in Victorville and flown by helicopter to an LAPD station on 77th Street by the same arrest team.

Beck offered few details about the arrests. But police sources, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation, said Barnes was the suspected gunman in the April 11 slaying of electronic engineering students Ming Qu and Ying Wu, both 23.

Bolden was believed to have been present when the students were gunned down during a suspected robbery while sitting in Qu’s parked BMW in the 2700 block of Raymond Avenue, the sources said.

The suspects were being held without bail and were expected to be booked on suspicion of murder late Friday. They are scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.

Beck said the suspects did not have extensive criminal records but were believed to have been involved in two earlier attempted murders.

“Early on, forensic evidence made us suspect quite strongly that this was a part of a series of crimes committed by the same men,” the chief said.

Ballistics tests on shell casings recovered at the scene of the shooting show they were fired from the same gun used in two other shootings, police sources said.

The sources said Barnes took a cellphone from one of the victims and detectives were able to locate him by tracking signals sent by the device.

Authorities also identified a signal from a second cellphone in proximity to the victim’s phone, they said.

The second phone was identified as belonging to the suspect.

One police source described the case against Barnes and Bolden as “very, very strong.”

Detectives working on the two previous shootings had followed some “very tenuous” leads that they believed tied the earlier incidents to the primary suspect in the USC case, a police source said.

Beck and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa praised detectives for their work.

Villaraigoisa portrayed the arrests as a sign of how seriously the city takes public safety and sought to reassure an international audience, in Spanish and English, that Los Angeles is not a dangerous destination.

“Safety is priority No. 1 in this city,” he said. “Students at our city’s universities should feel safe in and around our campuses.”

The mayor, the father of a college-age daughter, said his heart went out to the Chinese students’ parents.

The arrests came days after the parents of the slain students filed a wrongful death lawsuit against USC, saying the school misled them when it claimed that it ranks among the safest in the nation.

On Friday afternoon, one woman who witnessed Barnes’ arrest from her front lawn said that at first, she thought she was watching the taping of a television police drama.

“It was quiet, calm,” said the woman, who declined to give her name. “We thought at first they were a crew filming ‘Southland.'”

She said dozens of detectives, plainclothes officers and SWAT team members descended on the 1200 block of 91st Street. Children played kickball in the street, and an ice cream truck cruised by.

Arresting officers swooped into a bright blue, two-story house in the middle of the block; the house is divided into five apartments.

They emerged soon after with a man in handcuffs, she said.

The woman, who said she has lived on the block for years, said she did not recognize the man, who had a medium build and appeared to be in his early 20s.

Nick Stahl

May 16, 2012          8:34 am

Nick Stahl, the actor who played John Connor in “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” is missing, an LAPD spokesman confirmed Wednesday.

Stahl’s wife, Rose Murphy, reported him missing about 10:10 a.m. Monday to Hollywood division officers, said spokesman Richard French. Foul play is not suspected at this time, he said.

She said the last time she saw him was May 9, KTLA-TV reported, adding he had been frequenting the Skid Row area recently.

Murphy filed court papers in February, saying the couple had been separated since January. She asked that Stahl’s visitations with their daughter, Marlo, 2, be limited. She also asked for proof he hadn’t used drugs within 24 hours before seeing her, KTLA-TV reported.

When the members of the Los Angeles Police Commission met behind closed doors last month to decide if a cop had been right to kill Dale Garrett, the two bullets in Garrett’s back raised serious concerns.

Det. Arthur Gamboa had insisted that Garrett left him no choice but to shoot when he pulled a knife and threatened to kill the detective during a botched drug bust. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck and the commission’s own watchdog agreed, recommending the oversight board find that Gamboa’s decision to open fire was within department rules.

But for a majority of the five-person commission, errors and inconsistencies in Gamboa’s account, along with the fact that he shot Garrett in the back, could not be ignored. In a divided vote, the commission concluded the detective was not believable. The shooting, the panel ruled, violated the LAPD’s policy on when officers are justified in using lethal force.

With that decision, the shooting became the latest in a series of incidents in which Beck and his civilian bosses disagree on whether an officer’s decision to use deadly force was appropriate. These cases have given rise to a rare vein of tension between the chief and commissioners, who otherwise have heaped praise on Beck since he took over the department 2 1/2 years ago.

Believing the officers in these cases were justified to open fire, Beck has either refused to impose any discipline on the officers or let them off with a simple reprimand in the earlier cases, The Times reported last month. That has left a majority of the commission increasingly concerned that Beck is undermining their authority and sending a dangerous message to the LAPD’s rank-and-file officers that the consequences for a unjustified shooting are minimal.

Beck must now decide how, if at all, to punish Gamboa and his partner for a deadly encounter that even the chief agrees was marred by mistakes.

It was shortly after noon on a cool, cloudless day in May when Gamboa and Det. Ronald Kitzmiller, members of a narcotics enforcement team, stepped out of the LAPD’s downtown headquarters and headed for their station about a mile away, according to an internal LAPD report. The copy of this report, and another one written by the commission, obtained by The Times, concealed the officers’ names. Gamboa was named in a different department document, and an attorney representing Garrett’s family named Kitzmiller.

Walking down Spring Street, they soon approached the bustling intersection at 5th Street, where trendy restaurants and stylish lofts put a pleasant gloss over the block’s alternate, less savory reality. For years, Spring and 5th — especially the southwest corner – has been a stamping ground for drug dealers, who skulk about and whisper offers of prescription pills, pot, and other drugs to passersby.

On a whim, the detectives decided to do some undercover work, according to the department report.

Kitzmiller pulled a $5 bill from his wallet, marked it with a pen and handed it to Gamboa. Dressed in street clothes that concealed his badge and handgun, Gamboa leaned against a wall on the corner as Kitzmiller watched from across the street, the commission summary said. Within a minute or two, Garrett, 51, approached, saying “Weed, Klonopin, weed, Klonopin,” Gamboa told investigators.

Gamboa asked for a Klonopin, a prescription drug that can give the sensation of intoxication, and told investigators that Garrett “quickly, forcefully grabbed — snatched the $5 from my hand, knocking it down in a rude manner.” As Garrett kept walking, Gamboa said he followed, demanding his pill.

What happened next is not clear.

In an interview shortly after the shooting, Gamboa told investigators that Garrett, while a few feet ahead, stopped and turned clockwise to face him while unfolding a large knife. “I am going to kill you,” the detective recalled Garrett saying. He insisted that he shot Garrett twice in the chest.

An autopsy, however, showed both bullets had struck Garrett on the left side of his back, making Gamboa’s account impossible. In February, Gamboa returned to the street corner with his commanding officer to go through the sequence of the shooting. This time, he said, Garrett had turned in the opposite direction.

A witness standing nearby told investigators that Garrett only turned at his waist, instead of spinning around completely. This, Beck said in his review of the shooting, could explain how Garrett was shot in the back. Or, Beck speculated, Garrett may have faced the detective and then continued to turn away, exposing the left side of his back. The chief, however, did not address how Garrett could have posed a deadly, immediate threat to the detective if either of these scenarios were accurate.

Another witness disputed this version altogether, saying Gamboa and Kitzmiller “sneaked up” behind Garrett and startled him, according to the commission’s report.

A knife was found under Garrett’s body, although the reports by the commission and chief do not clarify if it was found with the blade out or folded.

Beck and Commission President Richard Drooyan declined to comment on the case. The detectives did not respond to e-mails requesting comment.

The chief and commission agreed that the detectives’ decision to conduct a spur-of-the-moment drug operation was, in the commission’s words, “in clear conflict” with department rules and training guidelines. In particular, they found that Kitzmiller, who served as a supervisor in the detectives’ narcotics unit, should have known better.

For these actions, Beck could choose to discipline the men.

But the decision to shoot Garrett, Beck concluded, was reasonable. An officer in the same situation would have responded as Gamboa did, he said.

Drooyan and Commissioners Robert Saltzman and John Mack saw things differently. The evidence, the commissioners wrote in their report, “did not support an objectively reasonable belief that [Garrett] presented an imminent threat of death or seriously bodily injury” when Gamboa fired.
