February 20, 2013            10:22 AM

Although this year’s Daytona 500 marks Dillon’s first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series attempt at DIS, the Welcome, N.C., driver has a pair of top-five finishes at the 2.5-mile restrictor-plate track in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. He finished fifth in February 2012 and fourth in July 2012. In addition, He has two NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts at the track with a best finish of 20th in 2011.

Welcome, Buzz … Dillon’s pal Buzz, the official SpokesBee of Honey Nut Cheerios, will be featured on the hood of the No. 33 Chevrolet for the Great American Race. This marks the fifth year of Richard Childress Racing’s partnership with General Mills, which is a major associate sponsor throughout the year in the Sprint Cup Series on the No. 31 Cheerios Chevrolet and driver Jeff Burton. Cheerios, America’s No.1 cereal franchise, debuted in 1941 as Cheerioats. The nation’s first ready-to-eat oat cereal has since become one of the most trusted and recognized brands in America. In fact, one of every eight boxes of cereal sold in America is a box of Cheerios. General Mills’ popular franchise includes Cheerios, Honey Nut Cheerios, Multi Grain Cheerios, Multi Grain Cheerios, Peanut Butter Cheerios, Chocolate Cheerios, Frosted Cheerios, Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, Cinnamon Burst Cheerios, Fruity Cheerios, Dulce de Leche Cheerios, Yogurt Burst Cheerios and Banana Nut Cheerios.

Dillon’s DRIVE4COPD … Dillon’s paternal grandfather, Stan Dillon, passed away following a battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD) in May 2012, sparking Dillon to partner with the COPD foundation to encourage all Americans aged 35 or older to log onto http://www.drive4copd.org/screener to take a brief, five-question screener to see if they might be at risk for COPD, a serious and progressive lung disease that is the third leading cause of death of Americans. If the screener indicates risk, patients are encouraged to take the next step and speak with their healthcare professional or call the C.O.P.D. Information Line (1-866-316-2673) to discuss what their score may mean. Because COPD is a progressive disease that causes irreversible lung damage, early diagnosis and disease management are critical to helping patients breathe better in the future.

Time to Duel … The Budweiser Duels at Daytona feature two 150-mile races from which the majority of the final starting grid for the Daytona 500 will be set. By virtue of qualifying 16th in last Sunday’s qualifying session, Dillon will start eighth in the second of the two qualifying races on Thursday, Feb. 21.

Double Duty … In addition to competing at Daytona International Speedway in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this weekend, Dillon is scheduled to drive the No. 3 AdvoCare Chevrolet in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race on Saturday, Feb. 23. The Daytona Nationwide Series race kicks off a season-long campaign in which Dillon plans to battle for the 2013 Driver’s Title after earning Rookie-of-the-Year honors and finishing third in the final Driver’s Championship Point Standings in 2012. The DRIVE4COPD300 is live on ESPN at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Off Season … Dillon has spent much of the off season hunting throughout the U.S., traveling to locations such as Texas, Kansas, Georgia and Montana to hunt with friends and family members.

AUSTIN DILLON QUOTES:

This will be your first Daytona 500. What does that mean to you?

“The prestige that this race holds and being out here and being able to watch some of RCR’s guys go to Victory Lane throughout the years and be in Victory Lane to celebrate with them has really helped me appreciate the race and made me even more excited to participate myself. It’s just awesome to be able to fire the engine and try and make this race. It’s just a great opportunity and I can’t wait until Sunday comes.”
What did you learn during NASCAR Sprint Cup Series testing in January that might help you here at Daytona International Speedway for the Daytona 500 this weekend?

“Drafting. It was pretty good to be able to get out there and run near the other drivers and see what the cars handled like. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars didn’t handle as well as the NASCAR Nationwide Series cars. There’s just so much more power and less downforce. We’re out there and it’s going to be wild. You have to be able to be there at the end to make something happen. I think that’s what all of these races come down to. I think we are going to have a shot just like anybody else once we get into the race.”

Juan Pablo Montoya and No. 42 Target Team:

Keep the Momentum Rolling: Juan Pablo Montoya recently returned to Victory Lane at Daytona International Speedway in the Rolex 24 At Daytona with teammates Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas and Charlie Kimball. The victory marked the third win for Montoya and Rojas, and the first milestone win for Kimball in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. The win was the fifth for Chip Ganassi Racing Teams (CGRT) in 10 appearances at the twice-around-the-clock endurance race and the fifth for Pruett, who now ties Hurley Haywood’s record for overall victories in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Montoya drove the final stint and prevailed in a battle of splash-and-go fuel stops in the closing minutes to beat the second-place team to the checkered flag by 21.922 seconds.

Where he Stands: Montoya returns for his seventh full NSCS season at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (EGR) in the No. 42 Target Chevrolet. The 2013 season brings about the return of Target who celebrates their 12th year in the NSCS with Chip Ganassi. Chris “Sunshine” Heroy will return for his second season as crew chief on the No. 42 Chevrolet. In addition to the introduction of the new Gen 6 cars, EGR made a change to Hendrick Motors during the offseason.

Year in Review: In 2012, Montoya finished the season 22nd in the NSCS point standings. He accumulated two pole positions and two top-10 finishes during the season. The Target driver had an average starting position of 22.3 and an average finishing position of 21.7 with five DNF’s (did not finish).

Superspeedway Review: In 24 superspeedway starts in NSCS competition Montoya has a best finish of second (Talladega, 2008) three top-fives and seven top-10 finishes with 77 laps led. Team Target unfortunately did not finish a superspeedway race in the 2012 season due to unforeseen accidents and a motor problem.

Unlimited History: Montoya returns to the 35th running of the newly named Sprint Unlimited for the fourth time in his career. Last year, Montoya started last and finished in the top-10 after overcoming an early incident to drive the No. 42 to the 10th position. In six starts, the Target car has never placed outside of the top-20.

Top Dog at Daytona: Bullseye the loveable target mascot will be on hand at the Daytona 500. Bullseye is making the Daytona 500 her first ever NASCAR race! This is a once in a life time opportunity for this very special terrier.

100th Victory: Montoya is hoping to give Target and Chip Ganassi Racing Victory 100 if he wins the Daytona 500. This will be a momentous occasion for Target as they enter in their 7th season with Juan Montoya and its 24th with Chip Ganassi.

Driver Highlights:
· Montoya will enter his seventh full-time year in the NSCS in 2013 with Target returning as the sponsor

· Montoya is coming off of his recent win in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. It marks his third win in the endurance race as he joined teammates Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas and Charlie Kimball

· Only Latino, only Formula 1 driver, and only Indianapolis 500 winner to make the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup
· Three wins and nine poles in his stock car career (ARCA, Nationwide, NASCAR) with 22 top-five and 55 top-10 results in 242 combined starts. 1,061 laps led.
· One of only three drivers to win in Formula 1, IndyCar and NASCAR Sprint Cup (Dan Gurney and Mario Andretti).

Kevin Harvick continued his hot streak at Daytona Speedweeks, as he won the first of Thursday’s two Budweiser Duel 150 qualifying races at Daytona International Speedway.

Harvick held off Greg Biffle to win, just as he did when he captured the Sprint Unlimited on Saturday night. Juan Pablo Montoya made a late charge to third over Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch.

Danica Patrick started from the pole, knowing she had to keep her car intact to maintain the No. 1 starting spot in the big prize, Sunday’s Daytona 500.

“You guys have done an awesome job all week,” Patrick said on a warm-up lap. “Now, it’s time for me to go do my job.”

Second-qualifier Trevor Bayne took the lead on the opening lap, as Patrick began to slip back, falling to 22nd on Lap 10. Protecting her car was critical for Patrick; had she crashed, she would lose the No. 1 starting spot in the Daytona 500. So instead, she played it safe all race long, finishing 17th.

At the halfway point, Bayne led Casey Mears, Martin Truex Jr. and the Penske Fords of Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano.

Finally, on Lap 37, Bayne surrendered the lead to Harvick.

Barreling towards the checkered flag, Greg Biffle was running second in the Sprint Unlimited and closing rapidly on leader Kevin Harvick – seemingly destined to win the first NASCAR race of the season.

But just as quickly, Harvick slid up the track and blocked Biffle’s charge and in the process cutting off his momentum and pulling away for the victory.

Biffle settled for second.

Surprisingly, afterward, Biffle wasn’t angry about Harvick’s bold tactic and had no issue with how Harvick raced him on the final lap.

“I thought about sticking it in there and it just didn’t look like it was going to work to me,” Biffle said Saturday at Daytona International Speedway. “It looked like it would be sparks and parts flying. He shut the door on the top. That is what Kevin needed to do to win the race.”

At one point the Roush Fenway Racing driver was pretty certain he and Harvick were going to make contact on that final lap, calling it “borderline” whether the two were going to crash.

“He was going to go up against the fence,” Biffle said. “I have been there a hundred times. There is no way that move was going to work.”

In the battle of risk vs. reward, Biffle chose to be cautious and try and regroup. However, without a drafting partner there was no way he was going to be able to pass Harvick by himself.

“I looked in the mirror and didn’t have anyone pushing me,” he said. “I figured someone might give me a shove and I could try something else. …I was still against his bumper and was going to try to go to the bottom but there was nobody behind me at that point. These cars get separated pretty quick.”

February 17, 2013                 10:06 a.m.

It took only 15 laps into the Sprint Unlimited race Saturday night for the first big crash of the NASCAR season.

The race, featuring the new Gen-6 cars, is more of an exhibition before the season-opening Daytona 500 next weekend, but it provided the usual thrills and chills as Kevin Harvick outlasted 19 rivals to take the checkered flag.

Several big-name drivers were knocked out on Lap 15 when Tony Stewart, who was in second place, made a move down the track and his car made contact with the car of Marcos Ambrose.

By the time the chain-reaction crash involving nine drivers was sorted out, seven cars were too damaged to continue racing, including that of defending race winner Kyle Busch, who had already wrecked a car in practice.

Also taken out were Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson from Hendrick MotorsportsMark Martin and Kurt Busch.

“I didn’t see much. I was just cruising along and I saw sparks in front of me — I knew that wasn’t good,” Johnson said.

Greg Biffle finished second and Joey Logano was third in his Penske Racing debut. Stewart was fourth and Matt Kenseth finished fifth in his Joe Gibbs Racing debut.

As for racing in the new Gen-6 cars, Harvick said the drivers and teams have more adjustments to make.

“Still a lot to be learned,” Harvick said. “When you put 43 [cars] out, there things will move and shift a lot easier.

“It’s going to be a pack, absolutely. I don’t think there’s going to be too many chances. You’ll see some cars break away. I think if you turn on a 2000 race, one of those races, it’s going to be very similar.”

Matt Kenseth stared at the front end of his No. 20 Toyota in dismay, looking over the damage sustained in a crash he accidentally caused.

No one — whether a race car driver or average Joe who rolls off a dealership lot — wants to wreck a new ride.

Kenseth was only eight laps into Friday’s Sprint Unlimited practice session at Daytona International Speedway when, not realizing Kurt Busch suddenly had a burst of speed to his inside, drifted down the track across Busch’s nose and caused a five-car wreck.

It was “100% my fault,” Kenseth said as his crew evaluated the damage.

“I had no idea he was there,” he added. “… It’s not how you want to start. You don’t want to have things like this happen.”

Aside from Kenseth and Busch, Carl Edwards, Juan Pablo Montoya and Mark Martin also sustained damage. They were running in a pack as soon as practice began, Martin said, because it was important to learn how NASCAR’s new Gen 6 cars handled in the draft before Saturday night’s exhibition race.

“Half the guys couldn’t afford for that to happen,” Martin said. “We talked about it, and I wanted to race. I wanted to come here to race, I wanted to learn. A lot of them are just going to learn tomorrow night. Well, I’d like to be a step ahead.”

After the wreck, drivers spent the rest of practice in calmer conditions. Kyle Busch said teams were “playing chicken” and wouldn’t be drafting much.

In the second practice, only 12 cars took a lap — and drivers decided not to form a pack.

The early crash brought back memories of January’s three-day test session here. When teams decided to draft in January, Dale Earnhardt Jr. triggered a multi-car wreck — and no one drafted again.

Drivers have little experience in race conditions with the Gen 6 cars, which are officially making their debut this week. Since no one knows quite how they’ll handle in the draft, there are concerns that the Daytona 500 on the 2.5-mile oval could turn into a crashfest.

“I wanted to come here and race, not practicing by myself or practicing with a few guys,” Martin said. “That’s not really how you get ready for it.”

Kevin Harvick (197.364 mph) was fastest in the first practice session, followed by Aric Almirola (197.316), Greg Biffle, Kasey Kahne and Martin Truex Jr.

In the evening session, speeds were a bit slower: Denny Hamlin was fastest at 196.053 mph, followed by Joey Logano and Biffle.

Short-track fans at Daytona International Speedway and a national television audience were treated to a dramatic late-race duel between Kyle Larson and C.E. Falk in the NASCAR All-American Tour Late Model race on Monday night. Larson won the race but controversy raged to kick off the two-day Battle at the Beach short track event at the World Center of Racing.

Larson trailed Falk with six laps to go and appeared to make his move too soon, getting under Falk and passing him off the exit of turn two. Falk immediately ducked under Larson and retook the point, going into turns three and four. Larson closely trailed Falk until the last lap when, using the lap car of Trey Gibson as a pic, he got behind Falk and turned him before the start/finish line.

Larson crossed the line first and Falk scrambled to finish third, just behind the surging Ben Rhodes who led the most laps and beat Falk to the checkered flag. Falk had every right to be furious but was surprisingly calm following the race.

“Look, I’m not a 15-year-old kid anymore,” Falk said. “I’m 25 years old and I want to be in this sport for a long time. I can’t get there by acting like a spoiled brat. I had a moment to vent when I walked over to turn 1 and that was it. When you have the cameras on you like this, you need to be a professional. Kids were watching this race, especially on Speed on a Monday night, and they’re looking for someone to look up to.”

Ultimately, Falk believes there wasn’t much more he could have done. He wishes Larson hadn’t turned him but, on the last lap at a short track, Falk said that anything goes.

“I was staying on the brakes as long as I could,” Falk said. “I’ve been short track racing for a long time and on the last lap, when you’re two car-lengths ahead, you’re pretty much free game up front — you’re just a sitting duck… I just tried to protect the bottom best I could and tried to cut the corner and get around that tire barrier but he got into me once, thought I would be OK, and the wheels were just spinning.

“He got into me that last time and he turned me at the line. I wish he hadn’t done that but on the last lap, it’s anything goes.”

Larson admits that he was too aggressive at the end – dirty even – but did what he had to do to win the trophy, a replica of those handed to the winner of the Grand National races held on beach circuit in NASCAR’s youth.

“I don’t do a lot of short track racing,” Larson said. “But every video I’ve ever seen of it, the second-place driver wins in this scenario. I did what I think C.E. would have done to me if the positions were reversed.”

Both drivers had used up most of their brakes at the end of the race, with Larson saying he had to lean back into the seat just to put pressure on his brake pads. Decreased brakes forced the drivers to let off the throttle early to get a better entry and thus resulted in some of the contact between the two at the end.

“I hit the center of his bumper and got up underneath him and just turned him around,” Larson said. “I feel bad for him but we were coming to the finish line.”
