SkyWest Airlines pilot Brian Hedglin, 40, was on administrative leave at the time of the incident.

8:04 PM EDT           Tuesday July 17, 2012

A SkyWest Airlines pilot on the run after allegedly killing his former girlfriend last week attempted to steal one of his company’s commercial jetliners early Tuesday, but killed himself before the plane became airborne, authorities said.

Police in Colorado and Utah spent all day Tuesday trying to piece together the bizarre incident, which involved a stolen CRJ200 that struck the terminal and parked vehicles at St. George Municipal Airport in Utah.

The fugitive was identified as Brian J. Hedglin, 40.

Hedglin and Christina Cornejo, 39, who was found dead Friday of stab wounds in Colorado Springs, both served in the Colorado Army National Guard, officials said.

The pair were not dating at the time of Cornejo’s death, Colorado Springs police said. Hedglin also lived in Colorado Springs.

SkyWest Airlines said the airline employee was on administrative leave at the time of the incident.

No passengers were on board the CRJ200 and it was not in service at the time, the airline said.

A law enforcement official told CNN the fugitive apparently killed himself before getting airborne.

Hedglin, who joined SkyWest in 2005, was found dead in the plane’s aisle from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, St. George Police Capt. James Van Fleet told reporters.

A security officer checking the airport’s perimeter shortly before 1 a.m. first saw a motorcycle, its engine still warm. The officer went back to the terminal to check on its registration, police said.

The officer saw the aircraft in the parking lot of the airport terminal, its engines still running, said Van Fleet. Several automobiles were damaged. The plane at some point clipped the terminal building and breached a fence, according to CNN Salt Lake City affiliate KSL.

Hedglin apparently used a rug or piece of carpet to scale a barbed wire fence, police said.

“He is going to know exactly how to get into the plane, activate the redundant systems and take that plane off,” said Van Fleet.

St. George city spokesman Marc Mortensen said the pilot reversed the aircraft off the jet bridge before pushing it forward.

Asked why the pilot may have driven to St. George, Van Fleet replied, “The person who has those answers, unfortunately, is dead.”

Van Fleet said “I don’t think we’re any more vulnerable than any other airport,” but officials said they would review security.

Cornejo was found dead after a call from a family member, Colorado Springs police said. Hedglin was immediately identified as a suspect.

“Detectives went so far as to contact SkyWest and have them deactivate Mr. Hedglin’s access cards in the event he showed up there,” police said.

Airline spokeswoman Betsy Talton said law enforcement officials will look into how Hedglin might have gained access to the airplane.

SkyWest provided few details on exactly what occurred.

“The aircraft did sustain damage; the extent of the damage is currently being inspected by our maintenance and safety professionals,” the airline said. “SkyWest is cooperating with authorities in the investigation.”

SkyWest said passengers were being accommodated on other flights and through ground transportation.

The FBI office in Salt Lake City said agents were at the airport and gathering facts with other agencies.

“It is important to note there is no ongoing public safety issue, and the scene is under the control of law enforcement,” Agent Debbie D. Bertram said.

Spokesman David Castelveter of the Transportation Safety Administration said the agency was reviewing “perimeter compliance” at the airport.

According to Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft, the CRJ200 typically seats 50 passengers.

Armando Montano, an aspiring journalist who was working this summer as a news intern for The Associated Press in the Mexican capital, was found dead early Saturday. He was 22 years old.

Montano’s body was found in the elevator shaft of an apartment building near where he was living in the capital’s Condesa neighborhood. The circumstances of his death were being investigated by Mexican authorities.

The Colorado Springs, Colorado, resident arrived in Mexico City in early June after graduating from Grinnell College with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a concentration in Latin American studies.

During his time in the bureau, Montano covered stories including the saga of nine young elephants from Namibia who wound up on an animal reserve in Mexico’s Puebla state, and the shooting of three federal policemen at the Mexico City airport.

He was not on assignment at the time of his death. The U.S. embassy is monitoring the course of the investigation.

Montano had planned to attend a master’s degree program in journalism at the University of Barcelona in the fall.

With his high energy and broad smile, Montano made scores of friends within weeks after his arrival in the Mexican capital.

“Armando was a smart, joyful, hardworking and talented young man,” said Marjorie Miller, AP’s Latin America editor based in Mexico City.

“He absolutely loved journalism and was soaking up everything he could,” said Miller. “In his short time with the AP, he won his way into everyone’s hearts with his hard work, his effervescence and his love of the profession.”

In December and January, Montano covered the Iowa presidential caucuses as a news intern for The New York Times, and last year worked for several months as an intern covering policy and finance for The Chronicle of Higher Education in Washington, D.C.

“Mando was a standout young journalist, with a rare passion and exuberance for life and for people,” said Richard Berke, an assistant managing editor at The New York Times. “He accomplished so much and touched so many in a short time, and his potential was truly limitless.”

Berke said that he arranged to have Montano help cover the caucuses because he was so impressed with the young reporter when they met earlier at the New York Times Student Journalism Institute in Tucson, Arizona.

Kathleen Carroll, executive editor of the AP, said, “The loss of this vibrant young journalist is a shock to his colleagues and the long list of people who called Armando friend.”

Montano had also been a multimedia and reporting intern at The Colorado Independent, an online news service; and a reporting and investigative intern at The Seattle Times.

At the Scarlet & Black, Grinnell College’s student newspaper in Grinnell, Iowa, he worked as an editor and writer.

Montano was the recipient of an Ellen Masin Persina Scholarship from the National Press Club in 2008; a Newhouse Scholar with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists in 2008; and a Chips Quinn Scholar from the Freedom Forum for Diversity in 2011. He belonged to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association.

Born in Massachusetts, Montano was a fluent Spanish speaker who grew up in Colorado but lived for two years as a child in Costa Rica and spent time in Argentina and on the U.S.-Mexico border with his family.

He is survived by his parents, Diane Alters and Mario Montano, of Colorado Springs, who both teach at Colorado College.

Authorities say five people were killed and four others were injured when a vehicle returning to Colorado from a Boy Scout camp in northwest Wyoming veered into oncoming traffic and slammed head-on into a motor home.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol says a 3-year-old passenger in the motor home and four people in the other vehicle were killed in the crash on Highway 120 in north-central Wyoming on Saturday morning.

The Honda Element was one of three vehicles taking a group of Boy Scouts back to the Colorado Springs, Colo., area.

The Highway Patrol declined to release any other information Sunday, including the names of the victims.

Hot Springs County Sheriff Lou Falgoust tells The Billings (Mont.) Gazette that the Scouts had been camping around an area known as Pahaska Teepee.

Wednesday June 27, 2012          11:32am EDT

Firefighters struggled on Wednesday against a wildfire at the edge of Colorado Springs that forced 32,000 people from their homes, prompted evacuations from the U.S. Air Force Academy and consumed an unknown number of homes.

The Waldo Canyon Fire, which has grabbed attention for days because of its proximity to landmarks like the famed mountaintop of Pikes Peak and the Air Force Academy, has now burned through 15,375 acres, fire information officer Rob Deyerberg told Reuters.

“That means it made a run of roughly 9,000 acres in a matter of hours yesterday afternoon,” he said.

The fire was not as intense early on Wednesday but will likely build up again as the temperature rises during the day, Deyerberg said.

Officials were assessing damage a day after wind-driven flames swept over containment lines into Colorado’s second-most populous city, consuming an unknown number of homes on the town’s outskirts as authorities hurried to evacuate residents.

“This area that we’re in is extremely dense,” Colorado Springs Fire Department spokeswoman Sunny Smaldino told CNN on Wednesday. “It’s one of our worst scenarios in our city to have that many homes effected.”

Deyerberg said a spot fire may have touched a vacant, southwest corner of the Air Force Academy grounds. No serious injuries were reported as of Wednesday morning, he said.

As the wildfire suddenly grew more ferocious on Tuesday, the entire community of Mountain Shadows, a northwest subdivision, appeared to be enveloped in an orange glow after dark.

“This is a fire of epic proportions,” Colorado Springs Fire Chief Rich Brown said as ash drifted down on the city, sirens wailed and the thick smell of smoke permeated the air.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper flew into the city Tuesday night by helicopter to meet with fire commanders and tour the fire zone first-hand. He noted that the blaze was one of at least a dozen burning throughout the state. Four people have died in Colorado wildfires so far this year.

“This is the worst fire season in the history of Colorado,” he said during an impromptu news conference, adding that from the air he saw many homes destroyed in a glowing landscape that looked “surreal.”

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said 32,000 people had been evacuated, and an Air Force Academy spokesman said the evacuation zone included two communities of single-family homes on academy grounds housing civilian and military personnel and their families.

Columns of vehicles carrying evacuees and hastily packed belongings stretched bumper-to-bumper for miles on Tuesday, crawling slowly southward out of town along Interstate 25.

Closer to the blaze, which has been fanned by winds blowing into the southern Rockies from the prairies to the east, trees were visibly twisting from the heat of the flames.

“It’s a very hostile environment out there,” fire information officer Anne Rys-Sikora said.

Hickenlooper said he was consulting with Pentagon officials. The Air Force Academy issued a statement saying the military was preparing to dispatch up to 25 more helicopters to join the firefighting effort.

Authorities earlier said that half of the fleet of eight Air Force C-130 cargo planes equipped as air tankers were already at work, dropping flame-retardant chemicals over the blaze.

DEATH IN UTAH

The Waldo Canyon Fire, burning primarily within the Pike National Forest on the western fringe of Colorado City, was dwarfed in size by wildfires elsewhere across the state, and by a fatal blaze that flared with renewed intensity in Utah.

Authorities said on Tuesday a body was found in the ashes the fast-moving Wood Hollow Fire about 100 miles south of Salt Lake City, marking the first fatality in a blaze that has scorched over 39,000 acres of rolling hills covered by parched cheat grass and sagebrush.

Flames fanned by high winds into a second county forced the closure of Utah’s state Route 89 for a second time and prompted the evacuation of the entire town Fairview, a community of more than 1,200 residents according to the latest census, state emergency managers said.

The blaze already has leveled an estimated 30 homes and killed 75 sheep, authorities said.

The Wood Hollow Fire is believed to be one of just two western wildfires that have claimed lives in recent weeks.

The other is the High Park Fire near Fort Collins, Colorado, north of Denver, which now ranks as that state’s second-largest blaze on record and its most destructive ever, having consumed 87,250 acres in steep mountain canyons since it was sparked by lightning two weeks ago.

The High Park has destroyed 248 homes and killed a 62-year-old grandmother, whose body was found in the ashes of her cabin, while leaving an estimated 4,300 residents displaced by evacuations.

Colorado accounts for several of the 29 large active wildfires being fought across the country. The bulk of them were in seven western states – Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona and California, the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, reported.

Although federal authorities say the fire season got off to an early start in parts of the northern Rockies, the number of fires and acreage burned nationwide is still below the 10-year average for this time of year, according to fire agency records.
