Shena Hardin, 32, pulled the off-road move twice to avoid stopping for the students.

November 6, 2012            11:10am

The Cleveland woman who was caught on camera swerving onto a sidewalk in order to pass a school bus full of children will have to stand at the intersection wearing an “idiot” sign, a judge has ruled.

Sheena Hardin, 32, received her sentence Monday in a Cleveland Municipal Court where she pleaded no contest to the charges of not stopping for a school bus and reckless operation on a street or highway.

Judge Pinkey S. Carr ordered Hardin to stand at the intersection of E. 38th Street and Payne Avenue next Tuesday and Wednesday mornings wearing a sign that says “Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus,” court records show.

The sign, according to the judge’s orders, must be written on 22 x 22 white poster board with the text written in all capital letters in black marker.  Hardin must wear the sign from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. both days.

Cleveland Metropolitan School District bus driver Uriah Herron captured the video of Hardin driving on the sidewalk last September so that she wouldn’t have to stop to wait for the children in the school bus to load and unload, according to local ABC affiliate NewsNet5.

Hardin pleaded not guilty to the charges at a court hearing in September but reversed her plea in court Monday.

Judge Carr also ordered Hardin to pay $250 in court costs and suspended her license for 30 days, according to court records.

Neither Hardin nor her attorney, Eric Levy, returned messages for comment placed by ABCNews.com.

Bus stops in Moncton are empty Wednesday morning after city council decided to lock out Codiac Transpo workers.

June 26, 2012              11:56 PM AT

Moncton has locked out Amalgamated Transit Union 1290 bus drivers, service workers and mechanics, which means Codiac Transpo bus service will halt starting Wednesday.

The city said in a statement that the decision was made following approval from Moncton City Council.

The move will suspend service “indefinitely” the city said Tuesday night.

“Codiac Transpo service will only resume once a settlement with the union has been reached,” the statement said.

“The city feels this is the only way to force both parties back to the negotiating table and work towards a settlement,” a statement posted on the Moncton website said.

‘I was a little disgruntled to be honest. I was kind of thinking to myself, “Oh man how am I going to get to work?”‘— Kyle Greer, stranded transit user

The statement said officials felt it “makes more sense to suspend service now, when the weather is nicer and it’s easier for people to get around.”

Mayor George LeBlanc said the council considered the decision carefully and regretted the inconvenience caused to Codiac Transpo customers.

“We know that the decision to shut down Codiac Transport will be difficult for people who rely on this service. We are truley sorry,” he said.

Paul Thomson, a city spokesperson, said in an interview on Wednesday that he was sorry for the inconvenience that the dispute will have on citizens.

“We want to apologize to Codiac Transpo customers this puts them in a very difficult situation and a huge inconvenience. And we would also ask employers to be lenient with their late employees arriving late today, as a result of not being able to get a bus this morning ,” he said.

The city announced on Twitter on Wednesday morning that it would help residents get to their destinations.

“Stranded at a bus stop? Call 857-2008 and we’ll send a taxi to you at the city’s expense,” the city said on Twitter.

Kyle Greer was waiting to catch his bus at Highfield Square on Wednesday morning when he learned that the buses weren’t running.

“I was a little disgruntled to be honest. I was kind of thinking to myself, ‘Oh man how am I going to get to work? How am I going to get to and from?'” Greer said.

“And also just thinking about all the people out there who take the transportation to and from work because a lot of people can’t constantly be feeding money on taxi cabs.”

George Turple, the president of the Amalgamated Transit Union local 1290, said he found out about the lockout at about 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday. He said he was shocked because he expected at least 24 hours notice.

Turple said he wants to see openness and good faith on the part of the city before going back to the bargaining table.

Dispute over wages

The lockout is an escalation of a series of service reductions in the contract dispute.

The city has been cutting routes and cancelling service because it says it doesn’t have the staff to cover shifts.

Wages remain a sticking point in the contract dispute. The city’s last offer to the transit workers contained a 13.75 per cent wage increase over five years.

That deal would have been retroactive to July 2010 and it contained improved health and dental benefits. The city’s offer would have brought a bus driver’s annual salary to $51,000 in 2015.

By comparison, the union was asking for a 23 per cent wage increase over five years.

That would have brought a Codiac Transpo bus driver’s annual salary to $55,120 in 2015, according to the city.

At least 19 people were killed today when a bomb blast destroyed a bus in Pakistan.

Seven women and a child were among the dead, said local police investigating the explosion near the city of Peshawar in the north-west of the country.

Forty-two others were injured in the attack, which targeted government workers, and rescuers warned that the death toll could rise further.

One survivor described how he was covered in the blood of other victims as the bomb tore the bus apart.

No group has claimed responsibility for the atrocity, although the Pakistan Taliban and its network of militants have carried out similar bombings in the past.

The bus was filled with commuting government employees when the bomb was detonated.

Mohammed Javed, 35, who was on board, said he was covered in the blood of other victims.

Speaking as he was treated at a local hospital, Mr Javed added: ‘Luckily I was in the front part of the bus, and the bomb went off in the back.

Treatment: Medics attend to the injured at a local hospital. Rescuers fear the death toll will rise

‘Something hit me in the shoulder, but I kept my senses and started helping badly hurt people.’

Witnesses said they saw body parts scattered around the smouldering wreck of the bus.

Jalal Khan, 14, was standing in the aisle of the crowded bus when the bomb went off, and his right arm was slashed by a piece of metal.

‘We all fell on the floor of the bus, and people were crying for help,’ he said.

‘I was unable to see anything because there was a lot smoke, and I was having trouble breathing.’

Local officials said they believed the bomb had been hidden underneath the rear of the bus.

Television footage showed residents shuttling bloodied victims to hospital in taxis, trucks and other private vehicles.

Officials wheeled one woman into the hospital on a stretcher. She was covered by a blanket, and her clothes were soaked with blood.

The attack came one day after a remote-controlled bomb killed at least 15 people outside a madrassah in the south-western city of Quetta.

Pakistan has been battling a home-grown insurgency since 2007, which has claimed some 5,000 lives.

Iftikhar Hussain, the information minister for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where Peshawar is the capital, said the government would continue to target militants if attacks did not stop.

He said: ‘For the sake of protecting people, we are always ready for negotiation, but if the terrorists are not ready to stop, the only option left for the government is to go for a massive operation against the terrorists wherever they are.’

There’s stunning video out of Indianapolis of a school bus driver falling out of his seat and losing control of the vehicle.

He is seen desperately trying to hang onto the steering wheel as the bus crashes through a fence, trees and a play set before hitting a garage. The driver eventually let go and tumbled down the bus’ steps.

CBS News affiliate Indianapolis station WISH-TV reports the 73-year-old bus driver, Jack Thomas, wasn’t wearing his seat belt. The video shows him thrown out of his seat during a bumpy turn, then struggling in vain to hang on to the steering wheel and control the bus.

Thomas was cited for not wearing his seat belt. No one was hurt in the accident.

The date of the crash has not been reported, but the channel reported no children were riding in the bus at the time.
