Myles Wilkinson won a fantasy football contest to attend Super Bowl XLVII, but his dreams of going to the big game went up in smoke because of a 1981 pot bust.

According to a story by the CBC, the 50-year Canadian man was denied entry to the United States this week because of a conviction for possession of two grams of marijuana over 30 years ago.

Wilkinson, a Seattle Seahawks fan from Vancouver Island, beat out almost four million other players to win the trip to see the San Francisco 49ers play the Baltimore Ravens. But when he got to the airport on Thursday, U.S. customs agents brought up an arrest the man had when he was 19. They denied him entry to the country and ended any chance of making it down to New Orleans for a memorable weekend.

“I had two grams of cannabis. I paid a $50 fine,” Wilkinson told CBC. “I can’t believe that this is happening, for something that happened 32 years ago.”

CBC said Bud Light Canada, who sponsored the contest, invited Wilkinson to their Super Bowl party in Vancouver after hearing about his unfortunate situation.

That’s a nice gesture and Vancouver is a very beautiful city, but let’s be blunt: It’s also the most depressing consolation gift ever.

A win on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens would make the San Francisco 49ers a perfect 6-0 in Super Bowl appearances, but Joe Montana isn’t ready to place this year’s squad up there with the juggernaut he presided over.

I caught up with the Hall of Fame quarterback at “NFL Honors” on Saturday and asked how the 1989 49ers — perhaps Montana’s most dominant 49ers squad — would have fared against the 2012 version.

“That would be bad for this year’s team,” Montana said. “That was one of, I think, our more explosive teams all around, offensively and defensively. It would have been a good matchup, I think, but two different styles.”

Montana was quick to compliment coach Jim Harbaugh‘s handiwork, and he emphasized the stylistic differences between this year’s 49ers and those championship squads of old.

In some sort of alternate universe, it would be fascinating to watch the teams compete, but what San Francisco is doing with Colin Kaepernick under center is all about the present. These 49ers are just beginning to write their story.

January 10, 2013

You can see it in his gingerly gate as he moves from his locker to the shower area, in the way he leans against a wall to take pressure off his right knee.

Haloti Ngata’s remarkable body hurts.

This is easy enough to forget when you watch the Ravens on Sundays. The television announcers are more apt to talk about Terrell Suggs’ Achilles or Ray Lewis’ triceps. The camera, always following the ball, rarely settles on the trench warfare between Ngata and two or three offensive linemen nearly as big and powerful as he.

His teammates know. Always in awe of his combined size, power and agility, they now speak in appreciative tones of the way Ngata has played through a sprained knee and a busted shoulder, never saying much about either. That’s the way he learned from his Tongan forefathers — go to work every day, and if you’re in pain, still go.

But this season — his seventh overall and the second straight in which he’s played through debilitating pain — the Ravens defensive tackle has thought more about his football mortality than ever before. Maybe it’s the joy he gets from chasing his 3-year-old and five-month-old sons. Maybe it’s the suicide of Junior Seau, a hero to Ngata and many other players of Polynesian descent.

“It makes you think, especially now that I have kids, is this job worth the head traumas you’re probably going to end up having when you’re older?” he says in the hushed voice that belies his enormous body. “I just think about being able to raise my kids, see them through college, see them have kids. It makes me think more about how much more I want to play.”

It’s a weird spot for a guy who’s about to turn 29 and just made his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl, a guy who signed a five-year, $60-million contract before last season. But Ngata knows he’s no longer the kid from the famous rugby video that pops up during Ravens telecasts, racing past men half his size at a speed that should be impossible for a human grizzly bear.

“I know I will probably never feel as good as I did when I was younger,” he says matter-of-factly.

He is wiser — better at resting during the week, better at managing his body according to the guidance of the physical therapist, stretching coach and masseuse he has hired. He’s learned not to wear out his mind as well. Instead of popping in game film the minute he arrives home from practice, he’s more likely to play with his boys, Solomone and Haloti Maximus. He likes to help his wife, Christina, put them to bed.

The Ravens, too, have made a point of resting Ngata more often, including for a full mid-season game against the Oakland Raiders, when he could have played if necessary.

For now, those efforts have mitigated his physical deterioration.

Opponents certainly aren’t ready to write him off as a threat. “He’s an excellent player – great size, great athletic ability and always a guy that you know where he is on the field,” says Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who will try to avoid being flattened by Ngata in Saturday’s AFC divisional playoff game.

It’s hard to be 345 pounds and not fat. But you don’t see a sloppy gut when Ngata pulls off his pads. He’s just big all over, from his thick, meaty paws to his cinder-block noggin.

At the Ravens training facility, he sometimes wears a nit cap pulled low over his ears. Combined with his full beard and mass, it creates a Bunyanesque picture. You could imagine Ngata, in an earlier America, emerging from the deep woods with a huge cut of timber slung across his shoulders.

Teammates sound like they’re describing a mythic creature when they recount his feats.

“Did you see him chase down RGIII out of bounds?” says defensive end Paul Kruger, referring to a play from December against Washington Redskins phenom Robert Griffin III. “I mean, that’s pretty insane, a 340-pound guy moving that fast. No matter how banged up he is, he can still move around pretty good.”

Asked where Ngata ranks among the physical specimens he has observed in football, Kruger says: “You watch the guy, he can really do anything. He can pick up a basketball, he can throw a football as far as anybody in here. He’s just athletic as they come, and at that size, it’s a pretty unreal combination.”

Of course, if Paul Bunyan played seven years on the interior line in the NFL, his joints would probably hurt as well.

It must be quite a thing to possess gifts unfathomable even to fellow pros and yet to grasp, as a man still in your twenties, how fleeting those gifts are. Of course, Ngata talks about that as stoically as he does about everything else. He inherited the demeanor from his father — Solomone Ngata died at age 45 when the truck he drove for work slid off an icy road near Salt Lake City — and the other men in his family.

Rah deal?

A Baltimore Ravens cheerleader who told the team she was quitting after the season says she has been unfairly left off the squad for the Super Bowl, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The alleged snub of Courtney Lenz sparked an online petition and Facebook drive to reinstate her. Thousands had posted their support as of Wednesday afternoon after Lenz reached out for help.

The team had promised that all cheerleaders with at least three years’ experience would qualify for the Super Bowl, the petition said. Lenz, 23, of Baltimore, had been with the team for five years. The petition noted that Lenz was the only veteran barred from performing.

The Ravens defended Lenz’s omission, telling ABC they trimmed the 60-member squad to the NFL-allowed 32 for the big game based on seniority, performance and personal conduct. Lenz said she believed the team was retaliating for her leaving the squad.

On the Facebook page titled “Help Us Get Courtney To Superbowl,” Lenz wrote she was told by the team that she had a “rough year.” She also said she had been benched for a few games because she had gained weight — “no more than two pounds” she added.

The Baltimore Ravens will face off against the San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans on Sunday, Feb. 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 EST. About 150,000 Super Bowl fans are expected in the city, according to the Associated Press.

Since the start of the postseason, a lot of attention has been put on Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and his “last ride.” There is no doubt that Super Bowl XLVII will be the last game for Lewis, but can the same be said for another future Hall of Famer that will be on the opposite sideline?

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Randy Moss has done just about everything there is for a receiver to do in the NFL, except for win a Super Bowl title. In Moss’ 14-year career, he has won Offensive Rookie of the Year, was named to seven Pro Bowls, was a five-time All-Pro, has played in three conference championship games, and will be participating in his second Super Bowl.

Moss came ever so close to the Lombardi Trophy on two occasions. In the 1998 season, as a member of the Minnesota Vikings, an overtime loss to the Atlanta Falcons prevented Moss and one of the best offenses in league history from playing for the world championship. Nine years later, Moss and the New England Patriots were on the verge of making history in Super Bowl XLII by finishing the entire season undefeated, but the New York Giants handed them their only loss of the year.

After leaving New England following Week 4 of the regular season in 2010, Moss went on to return to the Vikings, only to be waived by Minnesota four games later. The Tennessee Titans then claimed the veteran receiver and was a non-factor for the remainder of the year.

Prior to the 2011 season, Moss announced his retirement, only to return as a member of the 49ers in 2012. It’s apparently clear that Moss joined San Francisco simply because they had a great chance of winning a championship. It’s also evident that Moss is no longer the go-to guy he once was in the passing game. This regular season, Moss had only 28 catches for 434 yards and three touchdowns (the numbers of a typical role player).

If the 49ers do end up winning the Super Bowl, I think that it will be safe to say that Moss will take his ring and call it a career. He definitely doesn’t want to continue his career as the third or fourth option in an offense.

As mentioned before, Moss has done everything there is to do as a receiver. He’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer, and the only thing he needs to top off this stellar career is the opportunity to call himself a champion.
