JAMIE Whincup laughs when you ask him what he thinks about people who say motor sport is not really a sport. The four-time winner of Bathurst and the overall V8 Supercars Championship is one seriously fit guy.
Back in 2009, the Red Bull Racing driver finished second in the first series of the Channel Nine show Australia’s Greatest Athlete. Behind him on the list were an AFL player, a rugby league player and an Olympic gold medallist.
Whincup, officially, is one seriously athletic man. And it gives him a giggle when people say he’s not a real sportsman because he happens to be sitting down while performing his chosen sport.
After he’s finished giggling, he gets kind of irritated. And he harnesses that annoyance and launches into a monologue, which goes more or less like this:
“You need to do a couple of laps in a car to understand what V8 driving is all about,” Whincup says.
“The cars are really physical to drive. They have power steering but it’s nowhere near as power assisted as the car you drive. You’re forever pulling gears on a 20 kilo gear stick, there’s big brake pressure and steering pressure.
“Mix all that with with 55 degree cabin temperatures while you’re in a three layer road suit with trackie pants and skivvy underneath with helmet and gloves.
“The other thing you can’t underestimate is how much the g-forces knock you around and the noise of the environment. Then there’s the intensity of the race. You have to stay mentally alert for hours which is one of the most physical things I do.”
Righto Jamie, we get it. It’s a struggle out there. Not that we ever seriously doubted you.
So how does he stay fit? Well, Jamie trains every day and varies it up to help keep things fun. Most days he either runs 10km, cycles 60+ km, or swims a couple of kilometres in the pool.
He also does a little bit of gym work but it’s mostly just to straighten out his lower back, which gets a bit of a workout during race weekend and can end up quite sore and sorry.
“Strength is not massively important,” he explains. “We need more long distance endurance type training. We’re not sprinters and don’t need to be explosive.”
Diet is also important to Whincup, who calls himself a “big believer in cave man theory”.
“Our bodies are designed to eat natural food, fruit vegetables and meat,” he says. “There are so many different varieties of fruit and veg and and so many different types of meat. There’s plenty of variety to be able to mix it up. The only thing I blow out on is sauces.”
The question is whether this super-fit motor sport superstar will blow his lead in the V8 Supercars Drivers Championship. Whincup is just 20 points ahead of his Red Bull teammate Craig Lowndes, courtesy of a win in race three at Phillip Island last weekend. Others are in contention too.
Intriguingly, the final round at Sydney’s Homebush Street Circuit this weekend takes place on a course where Whincup has never made the podium.
The most skilful and daring driver will almost certainly win. But overall, there is a lot more to this game than what happens on the track. The way Jamie Whincup treats his body is a big part of what makes him such a champion.
“I’m a big believer that the fittest athlete, whether it’s track or field or golf or chess, has a big mental advantage over his opposition,” he says.
But there’s more to Whincup’s healthy philosophy than just preparing himself to win races.
“To be honest, a big part of my exercise and diet revolves around me being a better human being. At the end of the day I want to be healthy and active whether I’m bushwalking or wakeboarding or doing a bit of snowboarding when the snow falls,” he says.
“Being healthy is good for racing, but it’s also a lifestyle thing.”
